BETTY A. BOGGEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The young man on the cover of this Annual Report was one of the first residents of Our House, the housing program for youth ages 18 to 24 that Connections for the Homeless opened in September 2015. In the spring of 2016, he wrote a poem in which he described earlier hardships. Toward the end of the poem, one line reads: “So today I smile, not because change has come but because I see it coming.”

This young person’s poem is not a celebration of triumph, of winning, or of solving all his problems. Rather, it’s an expression of resolve, of determination, and of hope. It’s an expression of his reality, and it illustrates remarkable insight. We are very, very proud of him and of all the residents of Our House, and grateful to them for trusting us to help them in their journeys.

As you will see in this Annual Report, Connections is also focused on looking to the future after a difficult period. We experienced financial hardship in FY16 (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016), in large part because of non-payment on contracts resulting from the State of Illinois budget impasse. Sadly, we had to cut back. However, you will also see that:

• Our core shelter and housing programs continued full steam ahead.• Our Drop-In Center re-opened two days a week after a 9-month closure.• The community has rallied around us with financial and volunteer support.

This report focuses on the urgent needs that we filled even during a time of great austerity and lays the groundwork for what we are planning for our future. We plan to grow our core programs. We plan to expand Drop-In to five days a week and enrich its programming. And Our House will graduate young people to more independent living and open up slots for new residents.

As we look to the future, we see good things coming, and we are excited to share that future with you. Thank you for everything you do for and with us, in service of our wonderful participants.

In gratitude,

LAWRENCE DONOGHUEBOARD PRESIDENT (2016)

Dear Friends and Supporters:

I have spent much of the last fiscal year working with Betty, our talented and passionate Executive Director. We have strategized on budgeting, fundraising, programming, and many other issues. Our goal has been to serve as many people as we can as well as we can — even when the resources to do everything we need to do are not available.

Our staff has gone above and beyond the call of duty to support our clients. Our Board has gone above and beyond to support Betty and our staff. And you, our donors and volunteers, have gone above and beyond to make up for the shortfall in government funding. This shortfall has caused tremendous pain here at Connections and at other human services agencies in our state.

We have all brought our passion, energy, and resources to bear on the needs confronting us. Because of this, Connections has come out of FY16, one of the most difficult years in our history, with solid plans to move forward. Here is a brief look ahead:

• Because of commitments from so many of you, we are on a course to end FY17 with a surplus. We have weathered the storm!

• We have conducted a needs assessment with our clients and others who make use of local soup kitchens and similar resources. We are developing recommendations on what we and our community can do to improve services.

• We are developing a new strategic plan. This plan will incorporate broad external and internal stakeholder feedback to set our course for the next 3 to 5 years.

I look back with pride at the way our donors, volunteers, staff and board rallied during this challenging time. We have emerged a stronger organization. And we are now eager to move forward and enhance our services to our clients and our community.

Thank you for your support and partnership.

Sincerely,

Page 6: FY16 ANNUAL REPORT - CONNECTIONS FOR THE HOMELESS · 2019-11-29 · As you will see in this Annual Report, Connections is also focused on looking to the future after a difficult period

Drop-In: More Than Just ShowersAfter being shuttered for nearly nine months due to the State budget impasse, Connections’ Drop-In Center reopened on April 4, 2016.

“Several factors made it possible for us to re-open Drop-In two days a week last April: the success of our THRIVE gala last spring, advocacy by Congresswoman Robyn Gabel, and a grant from the Evanston Community Foundation,” noted Betty Bogg, Executive Director.

“The Foundation found that the issue Drop-In was adressing was a basic human right, and we want to make sure that people who are experiencing homelessness have that right met. And we thought it was important for us to get involved,” said Monique B. Jones, President of the Evanston Community Foundation.

Currently open only two afternoons a week, the Drop-In Center is always at capacity, and returning operations to 5 days a week is a primary goal for Connections. Once the facility can be fully staffed again, additional layers of services that will enrich existing programming and help people to take action for long-term change will be incorporated.

Connections’ Vision for Drop-In:

•Allowspeopletocomeinontheirownschedules.•Providesclassesandworkshopsontopicsrequestedbyparticipants.•Connectstutorsandmentorsfromthecommunitytoparticipantswho

are working on educational goals.•Providesopportunityforpurposefulandproductiveactivityaspeople

are seeking housing and looking to regain stability.

Between April 4 - December 31, 2016, 10 clients who came to Connections through Drop-In have been permanently housed!

And an additional 57 have entered into interim housing.

KEYUANA DORDENCASE MANAGER – FAMILY SUPPORTIVE HOUSING (FSH)

How long have you worked at Connections? Have you always had the same position? I have worked at Connections for a little over 7 years. Initially, I worked at Hilda’s Place for about 3 years and then transitioned over to FSH.

How do you explain your job to family and friends? I help families that were homeless to regain stability.

What has been your most memorable experience? Moving a family into an apartment in Skokie. The family was from the west side of Chicago and had been in a domestic violence shelter in Downers Grove for several months. When the children (4 of them – ages 2, 3, 6, and 13) came into the apartment, they all had on backpacks. After unpacking some items, the mom asked if I could take her to pick up some groceries. As we were preparing to leave, the kids started putting their backpacks on (their clothing and belongings were inside). I explained to them that they could leave the backpacks in the apartment because they lived here now. They still couldn’t believe it.

What do you enjoy most about working at Connections? I can say that I love the relationships that I have with the clients here at Connections. Across all programs, I love talking with the clients about things going on with them, outside of their obvious situations. I love the history that I have with so many clients here.

Is there a quote/motto you live by? I don’t think I have a motto or quote that I live by. Every day I think of ways to be a better person and encourage someone else. It helps me tremendously when I can be a blessing to someone else.

Making a Difference: It’s no secret that Connections’ biggest asset and key to success is our staff and volunteers. From the administrative staff to our case managers to our legion of dedicated volunteers, there’s a unified bond and unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission. Here’s a closer look at one individual who are making a difference in the lives of our clients and in the community every day!

“Keyuana holds a lot of history here, so I turn to her for a historical perspective. She also shared once that her philosophy as a Case Manager is helping people move forward and focus on the future. She truly does this by motivating people to try new things. I’ve seen her make some serious breakthroughs with people that seemed stagnant. She doesn’t give up on people and has a great sense of justice.”

– Jen Feuer-Crystal, Housing Program Manager
