MARIE-ROSE KAHANE FOR YALI GLASS

Marie-Rose started by designing drinking glasses for a private home. The first collection of tumblers was popular and in demand for other houses. From there without much planning Yali Glass grew organically. With each order and each project, they have developed in new directions. New designs for drinking glasses, decanters, plates and bowls as well as large lamps and flower vases have developed from these early roots.

Marie-Rose Kahane’s passion for glass and design, from working and living in Venice makes it possible for her to look at different types of glass from the Renaissance to the timeless work of Carlo Scarpa.

Vital to Yali are the very talented and committed artisans of Murano. Supporting their craftsmanship is an honour and a pleasure.

CLIVE BOWEN

Clive Bowen studied painting and etching at Cardiff College of Art before being taken on as an apprentice by Michael Leach. In 1971 he set up his workshop in Devon and in 1976 after several firings with Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge he built the largest wood fired kiln in the country at that time, with a capacity of 400 cubic feet.

Clive makes domestic ware in the true Mingei tradition in that he wants people to be able to replace pots if they get broken. His free gestural decoration fits so well his warm and lively pots. Never one to overstate, he remains truthful to his chosen path while interpreting his work in a painterly way.

Clive Bowen has lectured and given workshops in Israel, Japan and UK. His work is represented in the V&A, National Museum of Wales, Ulster Museum, Crafts Council Collection, York City Art Gallery, Exeter Museum, Nottingham Museum, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Canada. Joanna Bird has represented him since 1994.

AKIKO HIRAI

Akiko Hirai was born in Japan March 1970. She initially studied cognitive psychology in Japan and obtained her degree in Bachelor of letters before coming to England. During her first visit to England to study English language, she was attracted by the English culture and complexity of multi cultural society in London. It made her aware of her own cultural influence in her visual perception. Her interests lead her to her second visit to England in 1999. She met many English potters and learned how to work with clay, soon after that she took a degree course in ceramics at the University of Westminster, then onto graduation from Central St. Martins. After her graduation Akiko found her studio in The Chocolate Factory N16 in Stoke Newington amongst other varying artists where she now practices her ceramic work.

Akiko makes practical ware using the Japanese tradition of allowing the clay to show how it wants to be fired itself. Her work also allows the viewers to find out the language of the objects in their own ways. She focuses on the interaction between the objects and the viewers. Her work and unique approach to ceramic work have had much high praise and her work is becoming more in demand from her commissions worldwide.

MATTHEW WARNER

Matthew Warner completed his BA at Camberwell College of Art in 2010. He went on to study under Julian Stair and now works from his studio in South East London. Matthew is inspired by the work of 18th century potter, Josiah Wedgwood.

‘Pots fascinate me because they embody and articulate so much information about society and culture. They are relics or signals of taste, social behaviour and cultural history. Their forms are incredibly diverse and at the same time carry a universal understanding. These everyday objects span social divides and convey very concentrated messages about their environment. I am particularly interested in the social connotations of these objects throughout history and more specifically how they have been deployed to promote ideas of class, power, and even moral understanding. My new work explores these perceptions of status and how they are influenced by functionality, social environment, material and ideas of luxury.’

MIYU KURIHARA

Miyu Kurihara is a Japanese artist who makes hand-painted ceramics. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Miyu currently lives and works in London.

She draws upon her heritage when creating her ceramics pieces; inspired by both Japanese kimono design and traditional Asian ceramics. All pieces are made by hand and individually drawn with intricate detail.

Having learned brush techniques and textile design in Japan at Tama Art University, and London at the Chelsea College of Arts, she incorporated these skills into her work and uses traditional blue and white porcelain craftsmanship that originate in China and Japan.

ADAM BUICK

Adam Buick studied Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Wales before embarking on a Ceramics Design and Skills course in Ireland in 2004. He uses the Moon Jar form as a canvas to map observations from an ongoing study of his surroundings, incorporating stone and locally dug clay into the work to create a narrative that conveys a unique sense of place. The use of local materials is integral to his work, reflecting a personal relationship with landscape, the materials within it and his past experiences from where materials were collected.

His work is in a number of public collections including the Devonshire Collection and the National Museum Cardiff.

CARINA CISCATO

Carina Ciscato is a Brazilian potter from Sao Paulo who moved to South London in September 1999, where she worked in the studio of Julian Stair and Edmund de Waal. The move, the contrast in culture and the climate of ceramics, has seen her work grow in confidence and move in exciting new architectural directions.

After graduating from Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado, Sao Paulo in Industrial Design, she was introduced to Studio Pottery in Krefeld, Germany, where she worked in the studio of Marietta Cremer. On her return to Brazil, she was apprenticed to Lucia Ramenzoni, one of Sao Paulo’s leading ceramic artists.

Carina’s work captures the fluidity of clay as she masterfully alters and re-assembles the thrown forms with a natural sense of balance, form and material. She has been represented by Joanna Bird since 2004 and is in collections including the V&A and the Devonshire collection, as well as in significant private collections internationally.

TANJA PAK

Tanja Pak’s conceptual glass work addresses the intimate relationships we have with the space around us, and with one another. Her work is a manifestation of such ephemeral things as human breaths and thought processes.

Pak was invited to show her work at the Palazzo Loredan, Venice during Venice Glass Week, 2019. She is Professor of Glass and Ceramics at the Academy of Fine Art, University of Ljubliana, Slovenia. She is a finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize, Venice, 2020.

MICHELUZZI GLASS

Elena and Margherita Micheluzzi have started a new venture, Micheluzzi Glass. Their forms are influenced and inspired by the work of their father, the celebrated glass artist Massimo Micheluzzi. His two daughters are now producing new designs in a range of subtle colours. Every piece is handblown on Murano, Venice, by skilled maestri employing traditional Venetian glass working techniques to create an exquisite body of contemporary work.

JAMES OUGHTIBRIDGE Oughtibridge has been producing large scale sculptural ceramics since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2001.

All of Oughtibridge’s work is hand built using slab construction with work ranging from small scale through to monumental forms. Surface texture, lines and mark making are all incorporated into the slabs during the building process to create a greater sense of movement. Oughtibridge has completed commissions for the Grosvenor Hotel and the James Bond Film Series, Spectre.

He received The Liaigre Award at Collect 2018 where he exhibited with Joanna Bird Contemporary Collections and his work was recently acquired by The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

JOANNA CONSTANTINIDIS (1927- 2000)

Joanna Constantinidis was born in York and trained at Sheffield College of Art. In 1951 she became a lecturer in Ceramics at Chelmsford Technical College and School of Art, and taught there for nearly 40 years. In 1978 she was awarded the Medal of Honour at the international exhibition of ceramic art in Faenza.

In 1989 she took early retirement in order to devote herself to producing ceramics full-time. By this time her work was internationally recognised and her pieces were being shown in the United States, Belgium, Germany and Italy as well as in the United Kingdom.

Her work was influenced by British history, drawing inspiration from medieval pottery, Staffordshire slipware, salt glaze and early industry pottery. Another influence was modern and ancient Greece, with much of her work being subtly lustred suggesting sun-bronzed metal and the minimalist shapes.

Her work is represented in major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

HYEJEONG KIM

Hyejeong Kim creates contemporary ceramic art that is both functional and sculptural. Her forms are created in perfect symmetry on the wheel, and then deformed later in her hands. Hyejeong has developed techniques and glazes that are originally derived from Chinese, Korean and Japanese traditional pottery.

Since graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Japan, Hyejeong has been exhibiting her work internationally and is currently based in Seoul, Korea.

‘I make pots on a wheel and am deeply fascinated by the dynamism of the movement between the centrifugal and centripetal forces that create a form. There are many different ways to make pots but throwing clay on a wheel yields the most organic shapes, like flowers blossoming or fruit maturing’.
