World Cancer Day: 4 February

Several factors are attributed to the widespread incidence of Cancer, the precise aetiology of which remains unclear. Witha view to raise awareness of caner and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment, World Cancer Day is ob-served on 4 February each year. It is led by the International Union against Caner (UIAC), a global consortium of 470+cancer-fighting organisations in 120 countries. This Day targets the public through global campaigns and urges UICmembers to make cancer a political priority.

Over 12.7 million persons are diagnosed with cancer and above 7 million die of cancer every year. The World CancerDay seeks to save millions lives from the cancer as also educate people about its symptoms, follow preventive measures, and ward of the risk of this epidemic disease. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme of Indian Council ofMedical Research (ICMR), more than 1300 Indians die every day due to cancer. Between 2012 and 2014, the mortality ratedue to cancer increased by approximately 6 percent. In 2012, there were 478,180 deaths out of 2,934,314 cases reported. The campaign against cancer underscores that 40 percent cases of cancers can be prevented by adopting healthy behaviourslike creating a smoke-free environment for children; staying physically active, consuming a balanced, healthy diet, andavoiding obesity; learning about vaccines for virus-related liver and cervical cancers; and avoiding excessive exposure tothe sun rays.

Most of the cancer cases and cancer deaths (47% and 55% respectively) occur in less developed regions of the world. If it is not controlled, this condition may get worse by 2030. So, it is imperative to get control over such situation at all thecorners of the world. The continuing theme of World Cancer Day this year, mid year of the 3-year (2019, 2020, 2021)continues to be, “I Am and I Will’. The theme underscores the capacity of individual to cope up, and take up cudgels to fightthis dreaded disease.

The most commonly affected body organs among men are: lips, oral cavity; lung, stomach, colorectum and pharynxwhile among women the organs with largest prevalence are: breast, cervix, colorectum, ovary, lip & oral cavity. Significantprogress has been made in managing certain forms of cancer like childhood leukemia. However, overall cancer remains amajor cause of death. The four areas for reducing the incidence of cancer include detection of major types of cancers;diagnosis & treatment; palliative care; appropriate policy interventions and advocacy.

World Encephalitis Day: 22 February

Celebrated every year on 22 February by the Encephalitis Society (founded in 1994), World Encephalitis Day seeks toincrease global awareness about those affected by encephalitis. It was founded by the Encephalitis Society in 2014. Sincethen, millions of people have been helped to raise awareness about this brain disease. The Encephalitis Society seeks tohave a world where encephalitis is as rare as possible, and that those affected and their families are enabled to seek earlyand proper diagnosis, and management.

Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain marked by high fever, headache, vomiting, mental confusion and in extremecases, seizures, coma and paralysis. The condition can result in brain damage. Children and elderly people are particularlysusceptible to severe encephalitis. It is fatal up to 60 percent of cases.

Various causes have been attributed to encephalitis: common cold or body's immune system attackingthe brain. The disease can affect anyone irrespective of age, gender, ethnic origin or geographic location. Survival rate islow and the survivors suffer from brain injury to varying degrees of disability.

National Science Day: 28 February

National Science Day is celebrated across the entire India on 28 February every year in memory of the discovery of theRaman Effect by the Indian physicist, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. It was also the day in 1928 when he washonored with the Nobel Prize in the Physics in 1930.
