A new era will begin for the NCAA Division II football program at UVa-Wise this fall. The Cavaliers will begin play in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) after spending the last six seasons as members of the Mountain East Conference.

Fourth-year coach Dane Damron's team overcame numerous injuries to play its best ball of the season down the stretch in 2018. UVa-Wise capped its MEC stay by knocking off perennial power Shepherd University in the season finale.

The Cavaliers are expected to rely heavily on the defense once again in 2019. A year ago, the unit finished top 25 nationally in six categories, including total defense where the team finished 20th by allowing 302.6 yards per game.

The strength of the unit came in its secondary where defensive back Marcus Tarrer earned first-team all-conference and third-team all-region acclaim after posting a team-leading 79 tackles last fall. Fellow defensive back Marquis Hamilton finished the season

with a team-high 12 pass break ups while also tying for the team lead with three interceptions. Overall, opponents passed for just 168.1 yards per game in 2018 making the UVa-Wise pass defense number 19 in the country.

At linebacker, Buster Henderson returns after registering 10.5 tackles for loss as a junior last season. Henderson's 10.5 TFLs helped spur the Cavs to 9.9 stops behind the line of scrimmage per game. The number ranked third nationally and led the conference. Fellow linebackers Da'Jon Bellfield, Deandre Williams, Kreshawn Dikes and Veronta Jones are also experienced returners at the position.

Up front, senior Bryce Harty anchors the defensive line. A year ago, the Culpeper, Va. native made 7.5 of his 35 tackles behind the line of scrimmage while adding a trio of sacks and two forced fumbles. He'll be joined on the defensive front by Keishoen Jarrett, Michael Rowser, Chavon Fields, Joel Burges and Rondre Knowles-Tenner.

On offense, the team returns honorable mention all-conference left tackle Sage McBride along with four other starters on that side of the ball.

Quarterbacks Tanner Bernard and Garrett Cropp will join a cast of newcomers to determine playing time. Bernard completed 65.7 percent of his passes last fall while throwing for 10 touchdowns. Cropp completed 3-of-4 passes before being injured and being lost for the season in the season opener. At receiver, Eli Marks, Matt Felton, Chris Pritchett and Jordan Jeter are returners at the position.

At running back, Terrance Lambert and Caleb Grant will battle for playing time. Lambert is a transfer from Troy University, he missed all of last season due to injury while Grant is a redshirt freshman from Woodbridge, Va.

In the kicking game, senior Daryian Basco will compete with freshman Drew Vermillion for punting duties while competing with freshman Chase Droog for place kicking duties.

Picked ninth in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll, UVa-Wise will open the 2019 season at home on Sept. 7 against Chowan. Two weeks later, the school will play its first ever SAC game against Mars Hill at Smith Stadium.

2019 preseason sac pollROCK HILL, S.C. - - UVa-Wise has been picked ninth in the 2019 SAC Football Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Cavaliers are entering their first season in the league after spending the previous six seasons in the Mountain East Conference.

Fourth-year Head Coach Dane Damron's team returns six starters on the defensive side of the ball following a 2018 campaign that saw the unit finish 19th nationally in total defense (302.6 yards per game).

The unit will be anchored by redshirt junior Marcus Tarrer who earned first-team all-conference and third-team all-region acclaim after lead-ing UVa-Wise with 78 tackles last fall.

Lenoir-Rhyne was voted as the conference favorite in the poll; the Bears collected five first-place votes and 68 points in the poll.

The Bears took home their eight SAC Football Championship in program history in 2018, finishing the season with a record of 12-2 overall and 7-0 in conference. In addition to winning the SAC title, the Bears advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II playoffs last season. Led by SAC and AFCA Coach of the Year, Drew Cronic, the Bears finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation in the final AFCA Division II Coaches Poll and are a preseason No. 3 pick according to the 2019 College Football America Yearbook.

The Bears had one of the most potent offenses in all of Division II, as they ranked ninth in the nation in scoring (41.0 points per game) and tenth in the nation in rushing offense (268.1 yards per game). Quarterback Grayson Willingham returns to lead the offense after his record-breaking season in which he completed 26 touchdown passes, shattering the previous record of 18. Lenoir-Rhyne ranked fifth in the nation in first downs (316) and third in passing yards per completion (17.36).

The defensive side of the ball is equally as impressive, with the Bears finishing 2018 ranked second in DII in fumbles recovered (17) and interceptions (21). The 38 total takeaways also ranked second and the 46 total sacks placed the Bears fifth. The Lenoir-Rhyne defense didn't allow a single player to rush for 100 yards. Starting defenders Jaquan Artis and Sherrod Williams are among the top defensive returners. The duo combined for 19 sacks, seven forced fumbles and three interceptions in 2018. At No. 2 in the poll was Wingate. The Bulldogs are coming off their second straight NCAA DII playoff appearance in 2018, finishing the season with a record of 9-4 overall and 5-2 in conference. Wingate closed out the 2018 season with a No. 24 ranking in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs got it done on both sides of the ball in 2018, with the offense ranking second in the league in points per game (32.5) while the defense was second in the league in points allowed per game (20.1) and total yards allowed per game (311.5). Reigning SAC Offensive Freshman of the Year, Nijere Peoples will look to lead the Bulldog offensive in the backfield, while All-SAC and All-Region cornerback Davion Washington will lead the defense. Wingate will open the 2019 season as the No. 15 team in the nation according to the College Football America Yearbook.

Carson-Newman checks in at No. 3 in the 2019 preseason poll. The Eagles finished in a tie for third with Tusculum a year ago, closing out the season with a 7-4 record overall and a 4-3 mark in the SAC. Head coach Mike Turner and his staff will look to build on their 2018 campaign where the Eagles finished the season ranked third in the SAC in offense, scoring 32.4 points per game and rushing for a league leading 347.4 yards per game. That offense will be led by the 2018 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year, All-American, All-Region and All-SAC selection Antonio Wimbush and his conference leading 1,206 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

The Tusculum Pioneers came in at No. 4 in the preseason poll as they finished the 2018 season tied for third at 5-5 overall and 4-3 in con-ference play. Led by fourth-year head coach Jerry Odom, the Pioneers will return 17 players from last year's squad, including eight on the defensive side of the ball. The Pioneer defense, ranked second in the SAC last season allowing just 219 total points and 312.9 yards per game of offense, is led by SAC Defensive Freshman of the Year Nelson Louis. The defensive lineman totaled 53 tackles last season, including 11 for loss, six sacks, a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

Newberry landed at No. 5 in the preseason poll. The Wolves went 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the SAC during the 2018 season. Another top de-fensive team in the SAC, Newberry led the league allowing just 285 yards of offense per game and only 17.3 points per game. Six defensive starters return for the Wolves in 2019, including All-SAC defensive back David Vereen, who had 31 tackles, two interceptions and 13 pass break-ups a year ago.

At No. 6 in the poll was Catawba. The Catawba Indians finished the 2018 campaign with a 4-7 record, going 2-5 in the SAC. Returning to lead Catawba are 14 starters, including All-SAC selections Jeremiah Ferguson (LB), Cris Page (DB) and Will Sweeper (WR).

Coming in at No. 7 in the poll was Mars Hill. The Lions closed out the 2018 season with a record of 4-6 overall, going 3-4 in conference. Head Coach Dane DamronDane Damron will enter his fourth season at the helm of the football program at UVa-Wise in 2019. In his first three seasons, he has guided the program to its first winning record since 2008 while posting an overall record of 15-17. The 15 wins over the last three seasons mark a 10 win improvement from the previous three seasons as the Cavaliers claimed five victories in the three years prior to Damron’s arrival.

A year ago, the Cavs over-came numerous injuries to play their best ball at the end of the season. After falling 25-17 to eventual national semifinalist Notre

Dame College in the team’s final home game of the season, UVa-Wise claimed its first ever victory over perennial power Shepherd University, 21-16, in the season finale. The win allowed the Cavs to finish the season 3-2 after beginning the year 1-4.

Under Damron’s direction, UVa-Wise has seen improvement in numerous facets of the game on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

The Cavs rushed for 1,233 yards in 2016 before gaining 1,299 yards on the ground in 2017. Last season, the program went over 1,200 yards for the third consecutive season by posting 1,219 yards on the ground. This comes after the program posted just 767 yards on the ground in 2015. Through the air, UVa-Wise has passed for at least 2,500 yards in each of Damron’s first two seasons. In the two prior seasons, the team averaged 2,259 passing yards per game.

On defense, UVa-Wise has intercepted 39 passes over the past three seasons. The improved secondary play has been the staple of the team as the Cavs have ranked among the best in all of NCAA Division II in the Damron era. In 2016, UVa-Wise was fifth nationally in red zone defense has opponents scored on just 61.7 percent of their trips while ranking 14th in tackles for loss as the unit averaged 8.9 per contest. A year later, the Cavs ranked 13th nationally in third down conversion defense by holding opponents to a 30.1 percent conversion percentage while fin-ishing 22nd nationally with 15 intercepted passes. In 2018, the defense put together its best season to date as a NCAA Division II institution. UVa-Wise finished third in tackles for loss per game (9.9), 19th in passing yards allowed per game (168.1), 18th in fourth down conversion defense (.300), 20th in total defense (302.6 ypg) and 23rd in third down conversion defense (.311),

The turnaround has resulted in a plethora of awards for football student-athletes. Linebacker Zachary Blair earned Second-Team All-America acclaim, in addition to First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-MEC honors as a senior in 2016. Meanwhile, placekicker Trent Martin joined Blair as an all-region and all-conference pick while tailback Carlton Griffith and defensive back Ed Kargbo earned All-MEC Honorable Mention acclaim that same season.

In 2017, offensive lineman Will White, linebacker Donavan Mon-tague, Kargbo, defensive back Andre Hamilton and kick returner Marquis Hamilton were named All-MEC Second-Team honorees.

Hamilton returned two kicks for a touchdown while averaging 37.1 yards per return, he finished one kick return shy of qualify-ing as the national leader in the category.

In the classroom, Montague was named CoSIDA Academic All-District. The linebacker posted a 3.57 grade point average as a biology major and was inducted into the school’s elite Darden Society.

Last year, Marcus Tarrer earned Third-Team All-Region, All-MEC First-Team while four other Cavs received all-conference recognition.

Named the fourth head football coach in school history in De-cember of 2015, Damron came to the College after a seven-year stint at Eastern Kentucky University.

With the Colonels, Damron spent five years as the team’s offensive coordinator. A 22-year coaching veteran, he has been known for his offensive prowess. In his final season at EKU, Damron’s of-fense set a NCAA FCS record for offensive snaps in a game with 123 against Murray State. In 2012, the Colonels averaged more than 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game. The Colonels rushed for at least 1,700 yards in each of Damron’s five years directing the offense.

During Damron’s tenure as offensive coordinator, EKU posted at least six wins in all five seasons he oversaw the offense. The Colonels tallied eight wins in 2012 before posting nine victories in 2014. Overall, Damron’s teams recorded 69-47 wins and losses during his collegiate coaching career.

Damron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at EKU in 1994. Following a stint at Morehead State, he became the offensive coordinator at George Jenkins High School in Lake-land, Florida. Later, he moved on to Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland where the school reached previously unchartered waters on the football field. The Braves won their first playoff game in school history and advanced to the regional finals in each of Damron’s last two seasons as head coach.

Following his time in Florida, the coach returned to his native state of Kentucky to become the head coach at Boyd County High School in Ashland, Kentucky. Damron’s track record of success continued with the Lions as they won a playoff game in three consecutive seasons. The coach returned to the collegiate ranks in 2007 when he accepted the head coaching position at Kentucky Christian University. The 2008 season marked the first-ever varsity football team in Kentucky Christian history.

Damron played collegiate football at Georgetown College (Ky.) where he aided the Tigers to the 1991 NAIA National Cham-pionship. A two-time All-American, the former quarterback is enshrined in Georgetown’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Damron obtained a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from Georgetown College before later earning a master’s degree in sport administration from Eastern Kentucky. The coach and his wife Delisha have two children – Hanna and Derek.

CoordinatorsZach Lewis

Offensive Coordinator

Zach Lewis is in his first season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UVa-Wise. The Coach comes to the college after having held the same position last season at Alderson Broaddus.

“I’m very excited to announce Zach Lewis as our offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” Damron re-marked shortly after his hiring. “He is a high energy guy that will inject a new attitude and bring enthusiasm to our offense.”

At Alderson Broaddus, Lewis oversaw a Battlers’ offense that ranked 23rd nationally in scoring at 40.4 points per game. AB rushed for 189.4 yards per game while passing for 256 yards a contest last fall.

Under Lewis’ direction, student-athletes established five new school records at AB as the coach served as the school’s offen-sive play caller.

“I’m very excited to be part of the Cavalier family,” Lewis said shortly after his hiring. “Coach Damron and this staff have done a great job in building such a special atmosphere and I hope to continue to add to that.”

A four-year starter at Moorehead State University, Lewis set school records for passing yards, completions and touchdowns during his collegiate career.

As a coach, the new offensive coordinator spent four years at his alma mater where he worked as the slot receivers coach and video coordinator in 2014 before overseeing recruiting and directing quarterbacks for three seasons.

While at Moorehead State, Lewis helped develop conference player of the year Austin Gahafer who passed for a league re-cord 11,918 yards during his career. The Eagles led the Pioneer Football League in passing offense in 2015 and 2016 while also leading the conference in passing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.

“After talking with Zach and talking with people about him, there was no doubt that he would be the perfect guy to take over our offense,” Damron stated. “We are on the same page with what we want our offense to be and he brings a great presence to the offensive staff room; I have been aware of Coach Lewis and what he has been doing for the last couple of seasons and I couldn’t be happier to have him join us in Wise.”

A 2014 graduate of Moorehead State, Lewis obtained a bach-elor’s degree in health and physical education.
