2017 BUFFALO BULLS FOOTBALL

Bulls Host Western Michigan for Homecoming

The University at Buffalo football team will be in search of its fourth straight win when it hosts Western Michigan on Saturday after-noon. The Bulls are 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC and are coming off a 27-13 win at Kent State last Saturday. The Bulls were led by Emmanuel Reed who rushed for a career-high 144 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Western Michigan is 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC and is coming off a 55-3 win over Ball State last Saturday. The Broncos are led by running back Jamauri Bogan who ha rushed for 355 yards and a pair of scores on the year. Western Michigan leads the all-time series, 6-2. The Broncos won the last meeting, 38-0, at Waldo Stadium last season.

Reed All About It Emmanuel Reed is having a breakout season for the Bulls. The sophomore running back has had three straight 100-yard rushing performances. He rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown against Colgate; 107 yards against Florida Atlantic and 144 yards and three scores at Kent State - the latter two were as a starter.. If Reed starts and rushes for 100 yards against Western Michigan, he’d be the first running back in the Bulls FBS era (since 1999) to rush for 100+ yards in each of his first three starts. He would also become the first running back since Anthone Taylor in 2015 to rush for 100+ in four straight games. Reed was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his performance against Kent State.

Off to a Good Start A season ago, the Bulls scored a total of 10 points in the first quarter of games. This year, Buffalo has gotten off to much better starts, scoring in the first quarter of every game so far. The Bulls have scored a total of 51 points in the first quarter of games this season. A year ago, UB scored only 10 points in the first quarter all year. In three of their last four games, the Bulls scored on their opening possession – some-thing they did only once last year. Against Colgate, UB scored 20 points in the first quarter, the most it scored in the first quarter of a game since scoring 21 at Temple in 2007.

PRESEASON MAC POLL

Just How They Drew it Up When starting quarterback Tyree Jackson left the FAU game with an injury just before halftime, the Bulls inserted Drew Anderson, a quarterback with one pass attempt in his UB career. The junior signal-caller looked like a pol-ished veteran when he got in to the game. Anderson was 7-of-9 passing for 109 yards and a touchdown. His 20-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Johnson, with under three minutes remaining, iced the game for the Bulls. Anderson made his first career start at Kent State and finished 11-of-18 for 142 yards and a touchdown and added 76 yards rushing in a 27-13 victory. Anderson has a good quarterback resume. He transferred from Diablo Valley College in 2016 where he passed for 346 yards a game with 33 TDs. He put up even bigger numbers in high school, throwing for 4,074 yards and 47 TDs his senior season at Miramonte High School in California.

Sack Lunch Heading into the Kent State game last week, the Bulls had a total of three sacks on the season. Buffalo posted four sacks against Kent State by four different players. Khalil Hodge, Demone Harris, Chuck Har-ris and Jordan Collier all registered sacks for the Bulls. It was the most sacks in a game by a UB team since having four against Ohio on Oct. 24, 2015.

Big Play Bulls Through five games, the Bulls have re-corded eight plays of 45 or more yards. This is a stark difference from a season ago when Buffalo had only five plays of 45+ yards all season. Junior wide receiver Anthony Johnson has played a major role in this as he has made a big play in three games. He had a 50-yard catch at Minnesota, a 52-yard catch at Army and a 46-yard grab against Army.

Picking Up The Slack Cornerback Tatum Slack is enjoying a great start to the season. The junior Cali-fornia native has eight pass breakups on the year, one shy of the MAC lead. He had the best game of his career with six tackles, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and three pass breakups against Florida Atlantic. He has had six pass breakups over the last three games.

University at Buffalo football head coach Lance Leipold has announced senior line-backer Jarrett Franklin will wear No. 41 this season to honor the legacy of former team-mate Solomon Jackson who passed away in 2016.

“It is a blessing and an honor to wear Solo’s number,” Franklin said. “I am going to do ev-erything I can to honor him. It means coming out every day with a smile on my face, ready to practice, ready to play and bringing team-mates along with me.”

After consulting with the Jackson family, one Buffalo player is bestowed the honor of wear-ing No. 41 for the entire season.

Franklin, who previously wore No. 36, is en-tering his final season with the Bulls. He is coming off the best season of his career, fin-ishing third on the team in tackles with 75 in 2016. The St. Charles, MO native is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.

Solomon Jackson passed away unexpectedly following an offseason workout on February 29, 2016. Jackson, respected and beloved by his teammates, played both linebacker and defensive end over his career. The slo-gan ALL41 is a prominent fixture throughout the Murchie Family Football Center to honor his legacy.

Boise Ross wore the number last year to honor Jackson.

Running of the Bulls The Bulls have averaged 53 carries per game over the last three games. UB ran the ball 57 times against FAU and 58 times for in its win over Colgate. The 58 rush attempts tied for the second most in a game in the Bulls’ FBS era (since 1999). UB also rushed the ball 58 times in a win at Bowling Green in 2010. The FBS-era record for most carries in a game is 62 in a 26-17 win against Ohio in 2003.

Hodge Ball Khalil Hodge leads the MAC and ranks third in the nation in tackles, averaging 12.8 tackles per game. In the season opener against Minnesota, the junior linebacker recorded a career-high 20 tackles. It was the most tackles in a game by a UB player since Davonte Shannon had 20 against Army in 2008. Hodge was named the MAC East Division Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4. He has also had double-digit tackle per-formances against Army (11) and Florida Atlantic (17) and Kent State (11). Last season, Hodge had 123 tackles – the eight-most in school history for a single season. He ranked seventh in the nation, averaging 10.25 tackles per game. Hodge was an All-MAC Second Team selection in 2016.

Charles in Charge Chuck Harris is making the most of his first season as a starter. The junior defensive end ranks second on the team in tackles with

29. He has already surpassed his season total of 18 tackles over 12 games in 2016. Harris has posted at least five tackles in all five games this season. He had a career-high eight tackles at Army on Sept. 9. Of his 29 tackles, 19 are solo - ranking him second on the team.

What a Debut! It was quite a debut for Anthony Johnson as the junior wide receiver, playing in his first game for the Bulls, had 11 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota in the season opener. Johnson’s 11 catches were two shy of the single-game school record. He had eight catches for 115 yards in the first half alone. In the second quarter, Johnson had a 50-yard reception and fol-lowed with 16-yard touchdown reception on the very next play. Four of his 11 catches in the game went for more than 10 yards. Johnson, who redshirted last season after transferring from Iowa Western Community College, leads the team in receiving with 26 catches for 436 yards and three touch-downs.

No Fly Zone Buffalo leads the MAC in pass defense allowing 156.4 yards per game through the air. The Bulls have only allowed two touch-down passes on the season. UB is one of only five teams in the nation to allow two or fewer touchdown passes this season, joining Michigan State, Georgia, UTSA, Idaho.

T3 Tyree Jackson is off to a solid start at quarterback this season. The sophomore signal-caller has thrown for 733 yards and three touchdowns and has rushed for 227 yards and four more scores. Jackson is building on his strong fresh-man campaign in which he started eight games. He finished last season 165-for-311 for 1,772 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was the Bulls’ sec-ond leading rusher, gaining 472 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He threw for 302 yards against Ohio and 306 yards against Ball State last season to become the first freshman quarterback in school his-tory to throw for 300 yards in a game.

A History of Running Backs If he can keep up his current pace, Em-manuel Reed could be the next UB running

back to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season. The Bulls have featured 1,000-yard running backs in six of the last 10 seasons, includ-ing three of their last four. Prior to 2007, UB had only three 1,000-yard rushers in the history of the program. O’Hagan Named to Rimington Trophy Watch List

James O’Hagan was named to the Rim-ington Trophy Watch List. The award is giv-ing annually to the nation’s top center. This is the second straight year UB’s junior cen-ter has been named to the watch list. O’Hagan is coming off the best season of his career. He started all 12 games of 2016 and was named All-MAC Third Team. O’Hagan has been the anchor of the Bulls’ offensive over the past two season, starting all 24 games.

Mitch Perfect Kicker Adam Mitcheson was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week after a solid performance in Buffalo’s win over Florida Atlantic. Mitcheson made both of his field goal at-tempts in the victory. The junior kicker made a 23-yarder as time expired in the first half to tie the game at 17. He then made a clutch 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. His season-long field goal extended the UB lead to 27-17 with 10:54 left in the game. Mitcheson was also a perfect 4-for-4 on extra

points in the game.

2017 KEY NUMBERSLast Meeting

#14 Western Michigan 38, Buffalo 0November 19, 2016 • Waldo Stadium • Kalamazoo, MI

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo football team did its best to hang with Western Michigan, but the 14th-ranked Broncos were just too much for the Bulls, winning 38-0 on a snowy and blustery afternoon at Waldo Stadium.

The Bulls were heavy underdogs entering the game, but no one told the UB defense. Buffalo played inspired defense in the first half. The Bulls held the Broncos off the scoreboard in the first quarter – just the second time this season WMU was held scoreless in a quarter. Buffalo only trailed Western Michigan 14-0 at the half.

However, the Broncos’ offense overpowered the Bulls in the second half. Western Michigan quarterback Zach Terrell was an impressive 29-of-37 for 445 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Corey Davis, closing in on the all-time NCAA record for career receiving yards, finished with 13 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The Bulls did do a good job of stopping the run. UB held Jarvion Franklin, ranked second in the MAC in rushing, to 76 yards.

Though shutout, UB’s offense showed signs of efficiency. The Bulls were able to move the ball into Western Michigan territory six times on 13 possessions, but their drives ultimately stalled.

Grant Rohach got the start at quarterback for the injured Tyree Jackson. Making only his second start for the Bulls, the graduate transfer finished 12-of-22 for 140 yards.

Jordan Johnson rushed for 95 yards in the game and moved past O.D. Underwood (1986-87) for sixth in school history in career rushing. Mason Schreck was the Bulls’ top receiver with five catches for 57 yards.

The UB defense was led by linebacker Ishmael Hargrove who had a career-high 15 tackles and a forced fumble. Safety Tim Roberts had nine tackles and cornerback Cameron Lewis and linebacker Jarrett Franklin each had six.

2017 BUFFALO BULLS FOOTBALL

MINNESOTA 17, BUFFALO 7AUG. 31, 2017 • TCF BANK STADIUM • MINNEAPOLIS, MN

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University at Buffalo football team put a major scare into the Big Ten’s Minnesota Gophers, before falling, 17-7, at the TCF Bank Stadium in the opener to the 2017 season on Thursday night. An experienced Minnesota team returned 17 starters to a team that won nine games and won a bowl game a year ago, but had trouble shaking the Bulls.

After losing a pair of starting wide receivers to graduation following the 2016 campaign, a big question entering this season was who was going to step up in that role? That question was quickly answered with the debut of Anthony Johnson. Playing in his first career game for the Bulls after redshirting last season, the junior wideout finished with 11 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. His 11 catches were two shy of the single-game school record.

He and quarterback Tyree Jackson made an instant connection. Half of Jackson’s completions were to Johnson as the sopho-more signal-caller went 22-for-42 for 211 yards and a touchdown in the game.

The UB defense also made major strides from last year, as they held the strong-running Gopher squad to 169 yards rushing in the game. Middle linebacker Khalil Hodge led the way with a career-high 20 tackles. It was the most tackles in a game by a UB player since Davonte Shannon had 20 against Army in 2008.

Safety Tim Roberts recorded a career high in tackles with 13. Jarrett Franklin also reached double-digits in tackles with 11.

Minnesota struck first in the game on a 61-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first quarter. The Bulls responded shortly after with a quick scoring drive of their own to tie the game. The big play on the drive was a 50-yard hookup from Jackson to Johnson that set up the Bulls at the Minnesota 16-yard line. One play later, Jackson found Johnson for a 16-yard touchdown pass to tie the game, 7-7, with 4:37 left in the first quarter.

The Gophers immediately answered with a long scoring drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run to regain a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter.

It looked as if Minnesota was going to build on its lead late in the first half. However, on a third-and-goal play at the UB 5, Cameron Lewis came up with an interception in the endzone to keep the lead 14-7 at the half.

The Bulls’ defense continued to play well in the second half, but Minnesota stepped up its defensive effort as well. Both teams traded punts for most of the second half until the Gophers added a 43-yard field goal with 2:05 left in the game to ice it.

ARMY WEST POINT 21, BUFFALO 17SEPT. 9, 2017 • MICHIE STADIUM • WEST POINT, NY

WEST POINT, NY – A season ago, the University at Buffalo football team erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Army at UB Stadium. The Black Knights returned the favor by scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat the Bulls, 21-17, at Michie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Early on, things looked great for the Bulls. Tyree Jackson connected with Anthony Johnson on the fourth play of the game for a 52-yard gain. Buffalo capitalized with a 21-yard field goal by Adam Mitcheson to take an early 3-0 lead.

Army responded with a long touchdown drive on its first possession to take a 7-3 lead with 6:58 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, it started to get fun for the Bulls. On the first play of the second stanza, Jackson rumbled 75 yards on a quarterback keeper to give the Bulls a 10-7 lead. On Buffalo’s very next possession, Jackson hit a streaking Antonio Nunn in stride for a 48-yard touchdown pass to give UB a 17-7 lead with 11:42 left in the half. It was Nunn’s first career touchdown catch.

After a great defensive series for the Bulls, a short Army punt gave UB the ball at the Army 32. However, on the very first play of the ensuing possession, a Buffalo fumble, recovered by Army, injected life in the Black Knights.

The score remained 17-7 early in the third quarter, when another Buffalo fumble, with the Bulls in scoring position, was recovered by Army. The Black Knights marched 79 yards over the next eight minutes and scored on a short touchdown run to cut the UB advantage to 17-14.

Following a Buffalo punt, Army mounted another long scoring drive. The Black Knights drove 66 yards over seven minutes and scored on another short touchdown run to take the lead for good, 21-17.

Jackson finished with 268 yards of total offense. He was 9-of-16 for 193 yards passing and rushed for 75 yards. Johnson had three catches for 82 yards and Kamathi Holsey had three grabs for 34 yards in the game.

Defensively, Jarrett Franklin had 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss to lead the Bulls. Khalil Hodge had his second straight game with double-digit tackles, finishing with 11. Defensive ends Demone Harris and Chuck Harris each registered career highs in tackles with nine and eight, respectively.

2017 BUFFALO BULLS FOOTBALL

BUFFALO 33, COLGATE 10SEP. 16, 2017 • UB STADIUM • BUFFALO, NY

BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo football team rolled up 486 yards of total offense to defeat Colgate, 33-10, in the home opener at UB Stadium on Saturday night. The Bulls scored on their first five possessions of the game to jump out to a 30-3 lead and never looked back.

Buffalo rushed for a season-high 302 yards on 58 carries in the game. Sophomore Emmanuel Reed had a breakout game for the Bulls, rushing for a career-high 120 yards. Quarterback Tyree Jackson also posted a career-high in rushing yards with 97 on only 12 carries.

The Bulls took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards on 11 plays, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run by Jackson to take an early 7-0 lead.

After a three-and-out for the Raiders on their first possession, Buffalo needed only four plays to score their second touchdown of the game. The big play on the drive was a 58-yard pass play from Jackson to tight end Tyler Mabry. Jackson connected with Anthony Johnson on a 14-yard touchdown on the very next play to extend the UB lead to 14-0.

After Colgate kicked a field goal on its next possession, to make the score 14-3, the Bulls got the ball back and marched right down the field again. Reed scored on a 10-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, to make the score 20-3 late in the first quarter.

The 20-point first quarter was Buffalo’s highest-scoring first quarter since scoring 21 at Temple in 2007.

Buffalo mounted an 84-yard scoring drive early in the second quarter and scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Johnathan Hawkins to take a 27-3 lead. Another long pass play from Jackson to Johnson, this time a 47-yarder, helped set up the touchdown.

Adam Mitcheson added a 26-yard field, as time expired, to give UB a 30-3 lead at the half.

Mitcheson’s 21-yard field late in the fourth quarter capped the scoring for the Bulls.

Jackson finished the game 9-of-16 passing for 184 yards and a touchdown. Johnson (2/60), K.J. Osborn (2/31) and Kamathi Holsey (2/14) all had two catches for the Bulls.

Defensively, the Bulls held Colgate to just 56 yards passing – their second straight game holding an opponent to under 60 yards though the air.

Demone Harris led the Bulls with six tackles as 25 different UB players registered a tackle in the game. Chuck Harris added five tackles, all solo, and had a tackle for loss. Chibueze Onwuka and Kennedy Emesibe each registered the first sacks of their UB careers.

BUFFALO 34, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 31SEP. 23, 2017 • UB STADIUM • BUFFALO, NY

BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo football team won its second straight game with a 34-31 victory over Florida Atlantic at UB Stadium on Saturday night. New faces helped the Bulls turn a 17-17 halftime tie into a 34-31 win.

The Bulls (2-2) rallied around back-up quarterback Drew Anderson who played the second half after starter Tyree Jackson went down with an injury late in the second quarter. Anderson, who previously had one career pass attempt looked sharp, completing 7-of-9 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulls scored touchdowns on their first two possessions of the game. They took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards on 11 plays, capped by a Jackson 2-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

On FAU’s ensuing possession, Ryan Williamson came up with an interception to give the ball right back to the Bulls. Buffalo took advantage and marched 79 yards on eight plays and took a 14-0 lead when Jackson scored on a 6-yard run – his second of the night.

Florida Atlantic (1-3) started to get its running game going on its next two possessions, scoring rushing touchdowns on 37-yard and 34 yards, respectively, to quickly tie the game at 14 with 13:25 left in the second quarter.

A field goal gave the Owls a 17-14 lead with 6:35 left in the second quarter. The Bulls then methodically marched down the field in the final six minutes of the half and Adam Mitcheson’s 23-yard field goal tied the game, 17-17, at the break.

Theo Anderson scored the first touchdown of his career on a 7-yard run to give the Bulls a 24-17 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter. Anderson saw the most action of his career and responded with 57 yards on 11 carries.

The UB defense stepped up on the Owls’ next possession forcing a three-and-out. The key play was a third-down sack by Malcolm Koonce, the first of his career, to force an FAU punt. On UB’s next possession, Mitcheson drilled a season-long 42-yard field goal to extend the Buffalo lead to 27-17 with 10:54 left in the game.

FAU scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 27-24 with 7:30 left and got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead. However, a fourth-down stop by the defense gave UB the ball back at the FAU 18 with 2:51 remaining.

After a couple short runs were stopped by the Owls, the Bulls faced a big decision on third down. They put the ball in the hands of Drew Anderson and the junior quarterback floated a perfect pass to Anthony Johnson for a 20-yard touchdown and a 10-point lead with 2:37 left. Johnson finished with six catches for 87 yards and a score.

Florida Atlantic scored a touchdown with 1:13 left, but failed to convert the onside kick and the Bulls earned the victory

Emmanuel Reed made his first career start at running back and rushed for 107 yards on 26 carries – his second straight 100-yard game.

The UB defense was led by linebacker Khalil Hodge who finished with 16 tackles. Brandon Williams had a career-high eight tackles. Cornerback Tatum Slack was all over the field with six tackles, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and three pass break-ups.

BUFFALO 27, KENT STATE 13SEPT. 30, 2017 • DIX STADIUM • KENT, OH

KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo football team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 27-13 victory at Kent State on Saturday afternoon at Dix Stadium. It was the Bulls’ third straight win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Drew Anderson made his first career start under center for the Bulls and did a great job managing the offense. The junior quarterback finished the game 11-of-18 for 142 yards and a touchdown. He added 76 yards on the ground, including a 64-yard scamper in the third quarter.

Emmanuel Reed got the start at running back for the second straight week and for the third straight game eclipsed the century mark in rushing yards. The sophomore back finished with 144 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, all of which he scored in the first half.

Reed scored his first touchdown on an 18-yard run with 8:01 left in the first quarter to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead. One-play prior, Reed ripped off a career-long 55 yard run.

Reed struck again on the Bulls’ next possession, scoring on a 1-yard run to extend the Buffalo lead to 14-0, early in the second quarter.

After Kent State scored on a 75-yard pass play, to cut the lead to 14-7, the Bulls punted the ball back to the Golden Flashes. The UB defense forced a Kent State punt on its next possession and true-freshman Kobe Green followed with the biggest play of his young career. Green blocked the Kent State punt, giving the Bulls a first down at the Kent State 8-yard line. Two plays later, Reed punched it in for his third TD of the game.

Kent State kicked a pair of field goals late in the half to cut the UB lead to 20-13 at the break.

The Golden Flashes took the opening kick of the second half and drove all the way down the Buffalo 1-yard line. However, on 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line, the Bulls defense stuffed the quarterback sneak attempt and took over on downs.

The Bulls capitalized and drove 99 yards on eight plays and Drew Anderson lofted a beautiful 5-yard touchdown pass in the back of the endzone to Zac Lefebvre to extend the lead to 27-13. It was Lefebvre’s first career touchdown catch.

The defense went to work from there, shutting out Kent State the rest of the way. Brandon Williams came up with his first interception of the season to ice the game.

Linebacker Jordan Collier had the best game of his career, finishing with nine tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss. Khalil Hodge had another double-digit tackle performance with 11 tackles and a sack.

As a team, the Bulls had a season-high four sacks and seven tackles for loss in the game. Chuck Harris and Demone Harris each added a sack for the Bulls.

2017 BUFFALO BULLS FOOTBALL

Lance Leipold is in his third season as head coach of the Buffalo football team.

In 2016, Leipold led a very young squad, featuring 42 new players. The Bulls were the fourth most inexperienced team in the nation. Buffalo earned impressive wins over Army (a bowl team) and Akron. Buffalo had four players named to the All-MAC team.

In 2015, his first with the Bulls, Leipold led UB to a 5-7 mark. He became the first UB head coach to win five games in his first season since Bob Deming went 6-3 in 1969.

Included in the Bulls five wins was a victory at Florida Atlantic - Buffalo’s first non-conference road win since the 2009 season. The Bulls won three road games in 2015 - the most in UB’s FBS era (since 1999).

The Bulls had five players named to the All-MAC football team in 2015, led by tight end Matt Weiser who was also named an Academic All-American – becoming the first UB football player in the modern era to earn the dis-tinction.

Leipold was named the 25th head coach in the history of the Buffalo foot-ball program on December 1, 2014.

Leipold came to UB from Wisconsin-Whitewater where he compiled an as-tounding 109-6 record and won six Division III National Championships over his eight seasons. A six-time National Coach of the Year, Leipold reached 100 career victories faster than any other coach in NCAA history – at any level.

Leipold has gathered multiple honors from as many as five football-related organizations. He earned his sixth American Football Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year award in 2014. He has won the award more times than any active coach at any level. He passed the late Joe Paterno, who was a five-time recipient of the award.

In his first season as head coach at Whitewater, The Warhawks went 14-1 and won the national title. He led the Warhawks back to the national cham-pionship game in 2008, but they lost to Mount Union, 31-26. Wisconsin-Whitewater went 15-0, winning the national championship in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and won 46 straight games over that span. Following a 7-3 season in 2012, UWW went a perfect 15-0 and won the national championship in 2013 and followed with another perfect 15-0 season and a national title in 2014.

In Division III, where athletic scholarships aren’t a part of the game, Leipold was able to recruit top-notch talent to the campus in southeastern Wis-consin. During his tenure, running back Justin Beaver earned the Gagliardi Trophy as the top player in Division III. Brent Allen earned the Division III Rimington Award as the top center. Jeff Schebler was the first recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award, given to the top placekicker in Division II or III. Tail-back Levell Coppage earned D3football.com Offensive Player of the Year accolades, and Cole Klotz was selected D3football.com Defensive Player of the Year. Defensive back Jared Kiesow was named an NCAA Elite 88 Award winner. The Warhawks have piled up 56 All-America honors under Leipold’s tutelage.

A native of Jefferson, WI, Leipold began his coaching career at Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1987 as a quarterbacks coach and then wide receivers coach. He moved to the University of Wisconsin from 1991-93 as a graduate assis-

tant and helped the Badgers to a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl appearance in 1993.

As an assistant coach at Division II Nebraska-Omaha from 1994-2000, Leipold helped turn the Mavericks from a 1-10 team in 1994 into three-time North Central Conference champions during his tenure. After being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2000, he moved on to the University of Nebraska, where he served for three seasons under current Ohio head coach Frank Solich. He was on the same staff as former UB head coach Turn-er Gill. The Cornhuskers competed in the national championship game in 2001 and earned bowl bids in 2002 and 2003.

He returned to Nebraska-Omaha to serve as associate head coach and of-fensive coordinator from 2004-06. The Mavericks finished 8-3 and won the conference championship each of his three seasons.

Leipold is a 1987 graduate of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he was a stand-out quarterback for the Warhawks. He ranks second in school history in ca-reer pass attempts (647), fourth in yards (4,277), sixth in completions (303) and tied for 10th with 27 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Whitewater Hall of Fame in 2003.

Leipold and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter, Lindsey, and a son, Landon.

Through continual growthFirst was medicine, then pharmacy, followed by law and dentistry: UB in

its earliest days was a series of professional schools. The creation of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in 1913 made the univer-sity all the richer with its focus on the arts and humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Students today can choose from 13 schools and colleges, of which CAS is the largest, with 27 departments.

Through pioneering progress Major discoveries are nothing new to UB. From the invention of the implantable cardiac pacemaker to the sequencing of the genome of a com-

mon coffee plant, our history is one of continual breakthroughs and innovations by big thinkers in relentless pursuit of answers. Over the years, UB faculty have won the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology.

By breaking new groundAs UB has evolved through the decades, so has our physical presence. The orig-

inal downtown medical school moved north in 1953 to join the largely E.B. Green-designed Main Street Campus (now the South Campus). Land for the North Campus in suburban Amherst was purchased in 1964. Our newest campus, in downtown Buffalo, has brought the medical school full circle, this time to anchor the city’s first academic medical center.

With an eye on the futureThroughout the years, lead-ership has maintained an ev-

er-evolving and ambitious vision for UB. “UB 2020” was launched in 2004 to increase our economic impact, invest in student growth, foster innovative partnerships and advance research that improves life for people across the globe. The related Communities of Excellence initiative, launched in 2015, leverages our passion for inno-vation and commitment to collabora-tion to address the most challenging issues facing the planet today.

With an ever-expanding vista

UB has always been interna-tional in outlook and reach. In

1980, we were the first U.S. university to partner with a Chinese university following the normalization of relations between the two countries, and have since founded ongoing partnerships in Singapore, India, Poland, Latvia, Japan and Canada. Meanwhile, UB is consis-tently among the top 20 universities in the country for international student enrollment.

University History

The University at Buffalo has been a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities since 1989.

Here is how the years add up to something big.Through a steady succession of big ideas, big ventures and big achievements, UB has advanced dramatically over the past century and a half. Starting in 1846 as a small, private medical school, we’ve grown to become the largest institution in the State University of New York system, and we’re charging toward world renown as a top-rated public research university. Our history is proud and prodigious—just like UB itself.

UB has presidential connections! Millard Fillmore, a lawyer and congressman, was named UB’s first chancellor in 1846. Still acting in that capacity, he was sworn in as 13th president of the United States on July 10, 1850.

Through unlimited choices, and the freedom to forge your own path

We offer more than 375 academic programs—the largest menu of

academic choices in New York State— including 100+ undergraduate degrees. Choose a program, or design your own. That’s par for the course at UB and one reason our students stand out: publishing research studies, launching companies, designing a Mars rover for NASA—all before graduating from college.

By providing a solid platform from which to soarWith an emphasis on critical thinking, ethical reasoning, a global per-spective and robust communication skills, the UB Curriculum—our core

academic experience—was designed to give you the tools you’ll need to succeed in a diverse and dynamic world.

With real-world, hands-on experience

Study glaciers in the Arctic with a leading climate change expert. Pitch your business

plan to local investors and CEOs. UB students experience hands-on learning in every discipline, through internships, service learning, alterna-tive spring break, study abroad, entrepreneurial programs, hackathons and more. Whatever your passion, we can connect you to others who share it, and give you the means to pursue it.

By being international to the core

Diversity is a hallmark of a UB education, and has been for de-

cades. Consistently ranked among the top 20 U.S. public universities in inter-national enrollment—and with faculty from every region in the world—UB provides students access to a rich variety of multicultural experiences and environments, both on campus and through our 80-plus study abroad programs. This translates into unique partnerships and a deep understand-ing of diverse viewpoints among our graduates—global citizens who live and work in 146 countries.

Through a culture of support and collaboration

At UB, we believe in the power of teamwork. Through our

innovative Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, even freshmen participate in faculty-led research. The Academies—living-learn-ing communities for professors and students who share an academic interest—make learning at UB a more intimate experience. Our Finish in 4 program, which offers personal advis-ing, tutoring services and a customized roadmap to graduation, helps students complete their studies on time—or the remaining tuition is on us.

The Academic Experience

From the largest multi-venue performing and visual arts facility in Western New York (below) to a leading academic supercomputing facility, our resources aren’t just cutting edge; they are as diverse and rich as our community.

Here is how we prepare you to take on the world.A college education is more than a degree—it’s a journey of personal transformation. The University at Buffalo is with you every step of the way, with an engaged and inspiring faculty, outstanding resources, unlimited opportunities and constant, caring support. UB students graduate as confident, independent thinkers and doers, ready to make their mark.
