For short road tunnels, where the naturalventilation is not sufficient, a pure longitudinaltunnel ventilation is used.

With this kind of tunnel ventilation the supplyof fresh air is realized by jet fans.

The pure longitudinal tunnel ventilation isincreasingly being used for longer tunnels, too.

Jet fans are axial fans with free inlet and outletsection.

They are mounted on the ceiling or on the sidedirectly in the cross-section of the tunnel.

Jet fans suck in a small amount of the tunnelair and blow it back into the cross-section ofthe tunnel with a high kinetic energy.

In this process an impulse exchange takesplace between the propulsion jet and the aircolumn of the tunnel, and this air column is setin motion in the direction of flow. Importantqualities are efficiency, aerodynamics, soundand corrosion protection of such systems.

Tunnel gate

Page 5: TLT - Jet Fans

For the system of a semi-transversalventilation (central ventilation stations) jet fanscan be used, in order to control the flow ofsmoke in the case of fire.

Thus, for example, a too high flow relocityresulting from thermal current or undesirabledirection of flow can be influenced in such away, that a possible escape route remains freefrom smoke to a great extent.

Depending on the traffic conditions, the naturalventilation of road tunnels, can be supported, increased, decreased or stabilized by using jetfans.

The jet fans create a defined longitudinalspeed of the air column in the tube.

This speed must be individually adjusted to therespective circumstances (tunnel cross-section, traffic volume, etc.), in order to adhereto the respective effective pollution limits.

The disadvantage of a pure longitudinalventilation is that the pollutant concentration(Ks) linearly increases along the tunnel tubetowards the end of the tunnel, because noexchange takes place between polluted tunnelair and fresh air along the length of the tunnel(TL).

Therefore, at the end of the tunnel theconcentration is the highest

(see fig. 1 longitudinal ventilation).

For city tunnels, the extraction of polluted air ismostly realized with large axial flow fans at theexit gate, in order to distribute the highlypolluted air via an exhaust air duct into theatmosphere, maintaining the immission at thegate within the permissible limits.

(see fig. 2 longitudinal ventilation with exhaustsystem).

For longer tunnels with longitudinal ventilationmostly a longitudinal ventilation in sections(intermediate) is used.

There the tunnel length is subdivided intoseveral sections.

At the end of each section the polluted tunnelair is extracted through divided ducts bymeans of axial flow fans and at the same timefresh air is blown into the next section.

(see fig. 3 longitudinal ventilation in sections).

With these measures, fires in the tunnel can becontrolled better, too.

Jet fans

By the term „jet fan” a unit is understood, which represents the machine ready for oper-ation after installation into the section reservedfor traffic and connection to the electric powersupply, and which is used for supplying freshair by means of exchange of impulses betweenpropulsion jet and remaining quantity of air.

A jet fan mainly consists of the followingcomponents:

• the fan housing made of steel sheet S 235

JR welded, galvanized and powder coated.

• the impeller, made of sea water resistant

aluminium cast alloy with individually

adjustable light alloy blades.

• the vibration reducing suspension device for

the fan, made of S 235 JR with the damping

elements.

• safety equipment preventing the fan from

falling on the road (stainless-steel chains)

and a safety switch (optional).

• the drive motor with cables lead towards

outside and the terminal box.

• silencers on suction and discharge side

made from S 235 JR material with perforated

plate made from high quality inox steel

material group A4.

Drive motor (7)

Three phase current asynchronous squirrel-cage motors are used as drive motors for thejet fans.

The motors are suitable for direct start-up.

The housings are made of cast iron withcooling ribs. Cooling is made through the airstream of the jet fans.

The antifriction bearings of the motor bearingsare sealed for life.

The motor corresponds to the insulation classH with heating in accordance with B and theprotection class IP55.

Motor support (8)

The motor is fixed in the fan housing by meansof sufficiently dimensioned supporting struts.

The supporting struts also serve as down-stream guiding sheets.

Nozzle and silencer (9+10)

The inlet and outlet parts of the jet fan aredesigned as silencers with integrated, aerodynamically optimized nozzle.

The silencers are designed in such a way thatthe required A-weighted sound power level(execution of the acoustic test in accordancewith ISO 13350) is met.

The silencers are made from a galvanized steelsheet housing, which is provided with thesame powder coating as the fan housing andmade of stainless steel perforated plates ofmaterial group A4.

Stainless design

As an option, we also offer our jet fanscompletely made of special steel.

Nose and tail fairings (4+5)

In front of the impeller there is anaerodynamically designed, non-rotating nosefairing. For unidirectional fans a rotating fairingis used. Nose and tail fairing are provided withthe same corrosion protection as the fanhousing.

On the downstream side of the motor anaerodynamically designed, corrosion protec-ted tail fairing is arranged.

Suspension (6)

The jet fans are suspended with a supportframe. The fans are fixed with heavy-dutysupport anchors.

The support frame consists of reinforced U-beams, whose upper webs of channels areadapted to the respective tunnel ceiling.

The profiled support frames consist ofgalvanized S 235 JR steel, for protectionagainst corrosion, and they are powder-coated, too.

Vibration dampers are arranged fan betweenthe ventilator housing and suspension device.

To prevent the fan from falling down, if thedowels become detached, stainless steelchains, which do not to bear any weight undernormal operating conditions, are also mountedat the ends of the fan.

If the fan falls into these chains, it isautomatically switched off by the safety switch(optional) which is mounted at the housing.

Wind pressure

The resulting total pressure (∆pt= Σ∆pi) mustbe overcome by the installed jet fans. Therequired total thrust results from:

The thrust indicated in the data lists is alwaysthe static thrust SSt measured on the test standin the free field.

In the tunnel this static thrust is reduced to aneffective thrust by the interfering tunnel flowstream and the proximity of the suspensiondevice to the wall, which must be taken intoaccount when designing the ventilationsystem.

The effective thrust Seff appearing in the tunnelresults from:

13

Many influencing factors must be taken intoconsideration when choosing the ventilationsystem for tunnel systems.

Most important for dimesioning of theventilating system is the quantity of fresh airrequired with different traffic densities.

TURBO LUFTTECHNIK can give advice andsupport for dimensioning ventilating systems.

With the software developed by us, based onthe standards of the relevant guidelines(PIARC, RVS, RABT), the amount of fresh aircan be calculated if the boundary conditionsand traffic data are known.

In order to transport this fresh air through thetunnel by means of jet fans, a certain amountof total thrust is required.

In order to calculate this thrust, the resistanceswhich have to be overcome must bedetermined.

They consist of:

• Friction losses in the tunnel

• Inlet and outlet losses at the gates

• Piston effect of the vehicles

• Cross sectional obstructions due tovehicles or other installations

• Thermal flows in the tunnel

• Wind load stressing on the gates

The resulting pressure losses can beessentially arithmetically determined with theaid of the following three formulas:

The design of jet fans should be as simple and robust aspossible. They have to be designed in such a way, that thespecial conditions in the aggressive tunnel atmosphere donot affect the reliability during the stipulated service life of20 years. This applies particularly to the corrosion protection. The fan must be able to work properly for 90 minutes at250°C. A corresponding certificate of an independent testinginstitute is to be submitted.

Impeller

The impeller, consisting of a hub and blades individuallyadjustable during standstill has to be designed for 100%reverse operation. In order to withstand the aggressivetunnel atmosphere, the impeller consists of a seawaterresistant AISIMg alloy.

In order to avoid crevice corrosion in the area of the fixationof the blades, the impeller is a completely closedconstruction i.e. the fixation screws must not come intocontact with the tunnel atmosphere. The impeller is to bedynamically balanced according to quality G2.5 (DIN ISO1940). Impeller: Al-casting alloy G-AlSi9Mg wa.

Electric drive motor

Three-phase current asynchronous sqirrel-cage rotor inaccordance with IEC guidelines without built on fan. Themotor has to be mounted in the fan housing by means of a4-point fixation (IMB 30). A fixation of the flange next to theimpeller is not possible. The flange protection class of themotor is IP 55 with insulation class H, according to B andsuitable for direct start up.

The antifriction bearings are sealed for life with a life of min.40000 h. The motor windings are made with coldconductors for temperature monitoring.

The motor must be suitable for an operating time of 90minutes at 250°C. The cables (power and monitoring) mustbe free from halogen and flameproof and connected to theexternal terminal box.

The Øresund-Tunnel

With 200 jet fans of typeTAS 7.1 of the latest gene-ration, we are providingfresh air in the ØresundLink.

The Øresund Link is animpressive tunnel andbridge connection betweenDenmark and Sweden.

The construction of the4,050 m long tunnel wasnecessary, because a con-tinuous bridge would havean adverse effect on the airtraffic of the airport in theneighbouring city ofCopenhagen.

An artificial island is con-nected to the tunnel fromwhere the route is led onthe 7,845 m long bridge.
