TLH Ranked # 5 in South Carolina
and Top 3% in the United States
For the third year in a row, TLH has been named by U. S. News and World Report
as a top high school in South Carolina and in the nation. Three of the schools
ranked above TLH are magnet schools that select their students. To produce the
2014 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools rankings, U.S. News teamed up
with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research, one of the largest
behavioral and social science research organizations in the world.
AIR implemented the U.S. News comprehensive rankings methodology, which is
based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all of its students well,
not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce
measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its
student body across a range of performance indicators.
South Carolina Rankings are as follows:
#1 Academic Magnet High School, North Charleston, SC
#2 Governor's School for Arts and Humanities, Greenville, SC
#3 Charleston County School of the Arts, Charleston, SC
#4 Dutch Fork High School, Irmo, SC
#5 T. L. Hanna High, Anderson, SC
#6 Riverside High, Greer, SC
#7 Wade Hampton High, Greenville, SC
#8 D. W. Daniel High, Central, SC
#9 Greenville Senior High Academy, Greenville, SC
#10 Woodruff High, Woodruff, SC
Baseball Wins Region
Jacket Baseball team celebrates winning Region Championship!
High-fives to the TLH Baseball Team on their Region Championship and first round win against Easley!
While working through the conflicts of spring athletic playoffs and year-end
activities, like TLH Awards Night, the Jacket Baseball team brought home a big first
round playoff win against Easley after winning its first Region Championship in many
years. Their next round playoff game will be against Nations Ford this Saturday at a
time yet to be determined. It is scheduled at 6:00 pm but Nations Ford is requesting
that it be earlier. Congratulations to Coach Crenshaw and the Jacket Baseball team.

Orchestra Gets Superior Rating
TLH Orchestra
Jacob Jansen holding TLH’s Superior trophy!
The orchestra traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia, over Spring Break and came back
with a Superior trophy for their performance at the competition. The group received
only one of 4 superior ratings awarded among all bands, choirs, and orchestras who
competed over the weekend. Congrats to the orchestra and Mrs. Perry!
Anderson Arts Center Needs
Volunteers!
The Anderson Arts Center, which is downtown immediately adjacent to the Farmer’s
Market needs volunteers. Each summer they conduct an Art Camp, one week at a
time, for either 8 or 9 weeks, depending upon the summer calendar. Each week they
need reliable teen volunteers either from 9-noon, noon-5, or for the full day.
Volunteers do not need any particular art skills or knowledge, but instead should be
comfortable with children ages 4-12, have reliable transportation, and be available
for the same time slot all 5 days of the week. Call 864.222.2787 for more
information. Students who would like more information can see Mr. Nutt.

Ken Littlejohn Named Paul Harris
Fellow
Ken Littlejohn was surprised at TLH Awards Night to be named a Paul Harris Fellow
by the Rotary Club for his work at TLH with the Interact Club and the Rotary. He
was honored for the community service work he had led with TLH students. To get
this honor, someone had to donate $1000 in his name to the ROTARY charity
organization that provides grants for various projects all over the world. This is
indeed an honor to receive this award from his Rotary peers. Congratulations, Ken
Littlejohn, for being an example to TLH students in giving back to the community!

Athletic Conflicts with Awards Night
Any TLH student who is involved with an athletic event on Awards Night will be
recognized at graduation. It is always difficult to schedule Awards Night because we
do not know if we will make the playoffs in spring sports or when the playoff games
will be scheduled. Because so many outside guests come to TLH to present these
awards, we must schedule it early in the year so that these presenters can get it on
their calendars to participate. Don’t worry – all due recognition will take place at
Littlejohn!
Fishing News
Annual Fishing for Dreams Striper Tournament on May 10th out of Broyles on Lake
Hartwell. This fun event pairs three team members with an Outdoor Dream child
and a striper guide. The event is followed by a weigh-in, lunch, and awards. Each
team raises funds via a pledge form. The event will start at 5:30 am and fishing will
end at 11:30 am. There is no cost for participants. The guides donate their time and
Cliff Bowman, owner of Lake Hartwell Fish and Marine, donates the bait to our
guides. The fundraising is done through a pledge/donation form for the participants
to collect donations. Everyone collects as much as they can. The event normally
generates $17,000-20,000. All youth participants are presented with a participation
trophy. Awards are presented for top team, 3 striper limit, top fundraising team, big
fish-striper, big fish-hybrid, big fish-largemouth, big fish-catfish. We also give all the
Outdoor Dream children nice Lew's fishing rods/reels and Plano tackle boxes.
The Outdoor Dream Foundation “grants outdoor adventures to children who have
been diagnosed with terminal or life threatening illnesses.” Anyone who is interested
in participating or helping with this event can contact Brad Jones at
[email protected] or 864-617-3641.

Jacket Golf
Jacket golfers continued good end-of-season play with a big region win over both JL
Mann (154) and Westside (183) on Monday at Cobb's Glen. The Jacket's season-low
round of 148 was just 4 over par as a team. Junior Graham Farmer's 35 was 1 under
par. Sophomore Jake Miller's 36 was an even par round. Senior Austin MacWhinnie
chipped in a one over par 37 and junior John Michael Kubu came in with a solid 40.
The Jackets are now 11 - 7 overall and 10 - 5 in the region. They are seeded 3rd in
the region and will play in the final group at the region 1-4A, 36 hole tournament on
Monday at Easley's home course, Smithfield Country Club. Monday's round could be
the last regular season match if the weather gets bad Tuesday so if you see a Jacket
golfer this week, congratulate him on fine regular season and wish him luck in the
upcoming post-season.

What Parents Should Know About
Electronic Cigarettes By Abby Medcalf
http://www.diablomag.com/education/October-2013/What-Parents-Should-Know-About-E-Cigarettes/
The electronic cigarette is an inhaler meant to be a substitute for regular tobacco
cigarettes. It seems smokers started puffing them a few years ago, in public places
from restaurants to airplanes. Since then, the trend has raised questions about
etiquette. But it is now raising questions about health, too, specifically for teens that
may be attracted to fruity flavors and false notions about how safe they are.
In September, the Centers for Disease Control published a report based on data from
the 2011 and 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey. What they found is that
experimentation and recent use doubled among middle and high school students
between 2011 and 2012, and that an estimated 1.78 million students had used e-
cigarettes. In other words, 1 out of 10 American high school students used e-cigarettes
in 2012, as well as nearly three in 100 middle school students. (Interestingly enough,
this rise coincided with a report that stated tobacco-cigarette smoking among eighth-
graders, sophomores, and seniors hit an all-time low in 2012).
According to the numbers, it appears traditional cigarettes are out--but e-cigarettes
are in. Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
describes the increase in use of e-cigarettes among teens as “deeply troubling."
“Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a
lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes,” he says. That concern is
shared with authors of the National Youth Tobacco Survey.
Obviously, e-cigarette manufacturers don’t market directly to young people, but
because cartridges come in kid-friendly flavors like bubble gum, caramel and
chocolate, it’s easy to see their appeal to children. Combine that with how easy it is
to purchase e-cigarettes online, and you can see how they become very attractive to
teens. If your kid walks into a store and tries to buy cigarettes, the law says she or he
has to show proof of age, but no such law regulates buying e-cigarettes because they
don’t contain tobacco. And let’s not forget that we’ve got stars like Ethan Hawke in
ads for e-cigarettes, and Katherine Heigel on David Letterman saying how great they
are.
So, are they safe?
E-cigarettes have a heat source that turns nicotine into vapor, which is then inhaled.
Depending on the brand, the cartridges in them typically contain nicotine and flavors
like bubble gum, mint, or chocolate.
Electronic cigarettes are not regulated by the FDA, but the agency has said it plans to
bring them under its jurisdiction. The FDA and other health experts such as the
American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, Action on Smoking and
Health, and the Center for Tobacco-Free Kids, argue that e-cigarettes aren’t safe, and
that, at the very least, more research needs to be done to determine what the
dangers may be.
An electronic cigarette can contain as much nicotine as a regular cigarette, or more—
amounts vary according by the cartridge. Some contain no nicotine and only have a
liquid, so users can have the experience of smoking with no harmful effects. But, the
FDA has said that consumers have no way of knowing if other potentially harmful
chemicals are being inhaled during use. At least, not yet.
What can parents do?
Remember that the adolescent brain is more susceptible to nicotine than an adult
brain, so this trend of rising use is something to be taken seriously. Here are some
tips to help in your efforts:
Be clear with your kids that smoking of any kind (conventional cigarettes, e-
cigarettes, marijuana) is off limits, and include these substances in your
household "no tolerance" policy.
Educate your kids that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a HIGHLY
addictive substance, as well as a stimulant, and overall dangerous drug. They
should know that cancer-causing chemicals are found in e-cigarette
cartridges.
It can be difficult to know if your kid is using e-cigarettes, because they don’t
smell obviously like tobacco or marijuana. However, e-cigarettes have been
associated with dry cough, as well as mouth and throat irritation. So if these
types of symptoms are persistent in your child, and have no other known
cause, you might want to investigate if there has been e-cigarette use.
Look up e-cigarettes on Google Images so you are clear about what they look like, as
well as the cartridges that go with them, and can identify them, if needed.
