A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

T. K. Madhava Memorial College, Nangiarkulangara was established in the year 1964 in memorial obeisance to the great freedom fighter and social reformer, Sri. T. K. Madhavan. It is one of the oldest institutions for higher education in the coastal district of Alappuzha. It is run by the Sree Narayana Trusts, the pioneers who cater to the needs of higher education of economically and socially backward students of Kerala. The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala and is recognised by UGC under 12 B and 2 F of UGC Act. The mission of the college is to mould young men and women committed to the pursuit of truth, compassion and moral excellence, upholding the doctrines of Sree Narayana Guru. The college stands for promoting its ideals “Liberation through Education” and “Universal Brotherhood”. The college is accredited with “B” grade by the NAAC in May 2004. The college currently has 8 under graduate courses and 1 post graduate course.

The college has a distinction of securing ranks and academic honours at the University level exams. The college has also excelled in various cultural activities and sports events. During the last two decades, this college has carved a niche for itself among the illustrious cluster of institutions run by Sree Narayana Trusts. The institution is totally committed to holistic development of students through quality teaching, skill building,and institutionalisation of ethics, community service and promotion of intellectual culture that bridges theory with practice. It is also committed to meet the requirements of all the stakeholders and comply with all relevant rules and regulations of the university. The institution has constituted an effective internal quality assurance system to meet these requirements.

IQAC- An Overview

The IQAC operates as an internal organ of the institution which would work for the qualitative improvement of all activities of the institution, with new formulation and strategies customised for the satisfaction of students, parents, teachers, staff and society, in general as they move towards the journey of excellence.The institution gives much needed boost to the students’ morale by emphasizing on discipline,duty, devotion,dignity and decorum which in turn enables our students to strive for both academic and human excellence. IQAC ensures that the institution with an experienced team of highly qualified, motivated and dedicated staff supported by infrastructural facilities is imparting true education to the students.IQAC takes the role of a historian, diagnostician, prognostician, researcher and developer of new formulations and strategies to take care of the progress of the institution.

THE PLAN OF ACTION FOR THE YEAR 2009-10

Section A: The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year for quality enhancement.

At the beginning of the academic year, a meeting of the IQAC was held and a plan of action for the year was chalked out by keeping in mind the following objectives.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS

Language Lab and spoken English classes for students. 90 students participated in these classes aimed at improving proficiency in English language communication in their day-to-day lives. Dr. N. Gayathri Devi, Associate Professor of English, T. K. M. M. College, Nangiarkulangara engaged the classes.

Guidance was given to all final year students of Commerce to select suitable careers, in tune with their ability and aptitude. The classes were handled by Sri. B. Ravikumar, Development Officer, LIC, Kayamkulam.

To organize workshops and seminars on a regular basis.

TEACHING-LEARNING AND EVALUATION

To encourage faculty to take up research, publications and to participate in development programmes.

To encourage the collaboration and linkages with the industry to bridge the gap between education and industry.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES

To promote the use of technology in education, a digital conference hall was set up in the Department of Commerce.

Computerisation of administration and process of admissions. Intercom connectivity for all departments. Examination committee to monitor all the examination works.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION

Motivation and financial assistance to students to participate in the university/state/national level competitions.

Career talks and career guidance for UG and PG students.

GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP

To instigate the students to apply acquired knowledge to analyze contemporary issues.

To expedite various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, a minimum a six meetings were conducted in each department.

INNOVATIVE PRACTICES

Exam oriented training for developing the right approach to the University questions.

Tutorial system strengthened.

Apart from the above mentioned activities, the college also plans to conduct various activities through forums, clubs and associations successfully.

Section B: The quality practices implemented in the academic year 2009-10:

The various activities (academic/ extra-academic) undertaken by the college community reflect the goals and objectives of our institution. The extension programmes undertaken by the college community give adequate testimony to our vision and goal. Our departments, clubs and other sub units have played their role in satisfying the institutional goals and objectives. The institution proudly organized ‘DARSAN 2009’ an academic fest to acquaint students and faculty with new frontiers of

wisdom. It deliberated on the topics of contemporary relevance and simultaneously had multidisciplinary brainstorming among the academia.

DARSAN 2009 was inaugurated by Dr. J. Prabhash, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala and the keynote address was delivered by Dr. M. Jayaprakash, Director, College Development Council, University of Kerala.

A souvenir was published in the institution for DARSAN 2009 with the lectures and papers presented by the resource persons and scholars.

Report of the important and special activities of the departments other than their routine teaching, research and extension works are given below:

Department of PhysicsThe departmental activities were inaugurated with Fresher’s Day 17th

August 2009 and the freshers were given an opportunity to exhibit their talents.

In connection with the ‘World Space Week-2009 Celebration, a lecture on the theme ‘Space for Education’ was delivered by ISRO scientist Mr. C. Manilal on 5th October 2009. The lecture highlighted the importance of India as one of the major contributors in the field of space research.

For DARSAN 2009 seminar series, Dr. Nisha J. Tharayil delivered a speech on ‘Nano crystallites on sol-gel silica glasses’on 20th October 2009. Sri. P. R. Reji Kumar gave a talk on the sol-gel process for the preparation of nanoparticles. Ms. Divya, S4 PG student presented a paper on ‘Nanotechnology in Medicine’; Ms. Chithra Devi P. presented a paper on ‘Energy Applications of Nanotechnology’ and Ms. S. Surya gave a presentation on ‘Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology’.

The auspicious Kerala day was celebrated on 05/11/2009; the students of the department actively participated in the procession and presented floats. Since 2009 was the International Year of Astronomy, the students displayed a float depicting the space activities of ISRO and bagged the first prize.

The Physics association activities were inaugurated by Dr. K. Remanan on 12/11/2009. Prof. K. P. Mathew, environmentalist and a former member of faculty delivered the keynote address on ‘Global Warming’.

The Energy Conservation Day was celebrated, with Energy Conservation Society, by conducting district level competitions for Higher Secondary, High school and college students.

The International Year of Astronomy (2009) was celebrated on 3rd

December 2009 with various activities such as seminar

presentations and quiz competitions. Students and faculty presented papers on various topics.

o Prof. K. Sashanka, in the first lecture, explained the origin of universe on the basis of “Big-Bang Theory”. She put forward a philosophical approach to the theories regarding the origin of universe and also narrated Sree Narayana Guru’s version of the origin of universe.

o Ms. Ashwathy K. of final year degree gave a talk on the achievements of ISRO in space technology and narrated the different space missions of ISRO.

o Prof. P. P. Sharmila gave an informative account of the historic evolution of astronomical telescope in the context of the year 2009 being celebrated as the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s astronomical telescope.

o Ms. Sreelatha S. L. gave a talk on the Chandrayaan mission piloted by ISRO.

o Quiz competitions were held in the afternoon session. In the All Kerala Intercollegiate Energy Quiz competition, organized by

Energy Conservation Society at Sacred Hearts College, Chalakkudy on 11th December 2009, three students from Physics stream participated.

Solar Eclipse observation was made for the students of the institution by the department on 15/01/2010.

“THEJAS-09” – a camp on Energy and Environment Conservation was organized by the department in collaboration with Energy Conservation Society at Thulaseetheertham Auditorium, Kayamkulam. The camp is inaugurated by Sri. C. K. Sadasivan, MLA and 50 students from high schools, higher secondary schools and colleges participated.

Zoology Association was inaugurated with an invited talk on “Biodiversity of Western Ghats” on 31st July 2009 by Dr. Sherly P. Anand, Selection Grade Lecturer in Zoology, S.N. College, Kollam.

DARSAN 2009, seminar series (14-23 October 2009) was inaugurated by Dr. K. S. Santhy, Scientist and Professor of Zoology, Avinashlingham Deemed University for Women. She delivered a talk on “Cancer induced Chromosomal Abberations study with Comet assay”.

Dr. Shiny P. Sreedhar, Selection Grade Lecturer, S. N. College, Cherthala gave a lecture on “Methodology and Perspectives of Science”.

Prof. S. B. Sreejaya, N. S. S Programme Officer, attended a training programme for programme officers at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery from 4-13 August 2009. She was the Chief Superintendent of University exams and P.S.C Exams and also acted as Arts Club Advisor of the college union 2009-10.

Department of English DARSAN 2009- Prof. Manu Ramakanth, Asst. Prof., Department of

English, S N college for Women, Kollam delivered a talk on “ Modern Trends in Literature on 26/12/2009.

Department of Economics, History and Political Science Prof. K. Murali acted as the convenor of Malpractice Prevention Squad

of University of Kerala. He registered for Ph. D. Programme at the Mahatma Gandhi University.

Prof. B. Valsalakumari, Asso. Prof. in History submitted the thesis entitled “History of Kayamkulam Muncipality” to the University of Kerala for the award of Ph. D degree in 2009.

Darsan 2009: Multi disciplinary seminar series

The staff and students of T. K. Madhava Memorial College was proud to organize “DARSAN 2009”,an academic fest to acquaint students and faculty with new frontiers of wisdom.

The conference deliberated on topics of contemporary relevance and simultaneously conducted a brain storming session among the academia. Peers from myriad disciplines, faculty members and students were participated in the conference.

Extension activities

Orientation programme: In the institution, an orientation program was conducted for the first year students in the college auditorium on 24/8/2009, to make them aware of the college discipline, code of conduct and curriculum. The HODs and Club Convenors addressed the students and gave all necessary information regarding each matter.

NCC

The NCC Unit of the college started its yearly activities from August 2009. The strength of the unit is 70. Among them, 37 cadets attended different camps centrally organized by the Group Head Quarters and the Directorates. 3 cadets availed the benefit of weightage marks given by the University.

22 cadets appeared for “B” certificate examination. All the cadets passed the examination. 7 cadets are appearing for “C” certificate examination. We conducted mini camps for cadets and firing practice. Weapon training was given to our cadets.

National Service Scheme

The NSS of our college has 4 units and the Principal constituted College level advisory committee for the year 2009-2010. Prof.C. M. Lohithan, Prof. M. Murali, Prof. K. N. Indira and Prof. S. B. Sreejaya are the Programme Officers.

The major programmes conducted were:

Regular campus cleaning programme.Personality development programme: One day programme was implemented on 05/07/2009. Onam celebration: Units actively participated in making ‘Athapookalam’ and conducting ‘Onakkali’. Volunteers visited Cheppad Poor Home and had a feast with the inmates.Cleaning of Government District Hospital, Haripad.Legal literacy programme.Palliative training programme.Green Campus Programme: With the help of nature club and PTA, about 100 plants were planted, in and around the campus, which gave awareness regarding the pollution caused by plastic and wastage of water.AIDS awareness programme: On December 1, AIDS day, Dr. Sreenivasa Gopal took classes on the topic and delivered a talk on ‘The growing trend of luxuries of the life which eventually lead to decline of our moral values’.Seven day special camp was conducted at Mannur U.P. School, Haripad during 18-12 2009 to 24-12 2009 with the theme “Youth for Environmental Enrichment”. During this period, we conducted many programmes like maintenance of roads, cleaning ponds with the help of 200 volunteers and created awareness regarding the scope of new energy through biogas.Volunteers actively participated in a ten day seminar series DARSAN 2009 during the month of October and in the UGC National Seminar conducted by Zoology department on Environmental Challenges of 21st century.

Science club The science club was inaugurated on 12th November 2009 by Sri.

Ajith Kumar C T, Joint Director, ANERT, Thiruvananthapuram, and delivered a speech on “Renewable Energy”.

A Quiz competition and essay competition on 12th and 24th

November 2009 on “water scarcity”. 22 students (Degree) participated in the essay competition. Maneesha V. of final year Physics and Sarath V. S. of final year Mathematics came first and second in the competition. The third was shared by Sreenath A. (2nd DC Chemistry), Aswathy K. (3rd DC Physics) and Meenu R. (2nd

DC Zoology). In the final round of Quiz competition, the participants were grouped into four teams. Team A (Sreenath S. of 1st DC Maths & Meenu R. of 2nd DC Zoology) won the first prize. Team B (Anju S. of 3rd DC Chemistry & Keerthi Nair of 1st DC Physics) won the second prize.

Solar Eclipse Observation was conducted by Science club on 15-01-2010 in collaboration with energy conservation society. The science club organized “Thejus-09” Camp on energy and environment for high school students.

In the All Kerala Inter-Collegiate Science quiz for the R.Sankar Birth Centenary Ever Rolling Trophy conducted on 15th January 2010 by Sree Narayana College, Kollam, Sreenath S. (1st DC Maths), Ameena T. (2nd DC Chemistry), two members of Science Club, bagged 2nd Runner up position with cash.

National Science Day Celebrations

We celebrated National Science Day on 23rd February 2010. The function was inaugurated by Dr. Remanan (Principal, T.K.M.M College). The second session commenced at 11 am. Kumari Navya V.S. and Kumari Chitra Devi P. of M.Sc. Physics presented a picturesque documentation on “Wetland Conservation “. This was followed by a film show “Bahiraakaasa Jaalakam”.

Communicative Empowerment

The college conducted spoken English classes for the outgoing third year students in the year 2009-10.

Founders Day

To commemorate the founders Day was observed on 7th November this year, a meeting was conducted in which Mr. Velanchira Sukumaran, the Convenor of Regional Development Council of Sree Narayana Trust, presided over the function.

PTA Meetings

PTA meetings were held to observe the psychological and academic merits and demerits of the students through interaction with the parents and it was very successful due to the lively and sincere interaction.

The tutorial system

The tutorial system has been improved effectively through fostering good student- teacher relationship and maintaining discipline. The tutors were given complete freedom in assessing the students’ ability.

Career Guidance Cell

The activities of career guidance cell were formally inaugurated by our Principal Dr. K. Remanan in 2009. The cell provided comprehensive information and guidance regarding various job opportunities after graduation and areas of higher learning. An individual and group session for personality development was also given to the students.

Sports Activities Prof. Vinod Jacob, Assistant Professor in Physical Education acted as

the Manager of Kerala University Cricket team for the Inter University Competition held at Hyderabad.

The college team participated in the various inter collegiate competitions in Cricket Football, Weight lifting, Power lifting, shuttle badminton.

Prof. K. Remanan, has been sanctioned a Minor Research Project titled “Impact of the Global Financial Crisis in the Financial Market in India with particular stress on the stock market”.

Activities of the guidance and counselling unit

The Career Guidance cell updates students on the changing job scenario and organizes classes with a focus on the PSC examination.

Counselling was given to the needy students.

Placement services provided to students

Many soft skill development programmes are held in the college campus for overall personality development of the students. Many free aptitude tests are also conducted regularly to prepare the students for job recruitment.

Students attended placement camps organized by various firms.

Development programmes for non-teaching staff

Computer Training was offered to non-teaching staff. Members of the non teaching staff were sent to in-service training

programmes. Organized programs to familiarize them with modern office

management techniques.

Healthy practices of the Institution

The college awards medals and certificates to the academically meritorious students.

Prizes are distributed to the winners of interclass competitions held in sports, cultural and literary events on the annual college day.

Endowment prizes are given to the outstanding students in various subjects of study.

Grievance cell conducts a meeting frequently. Adequate steps are taken to address the grievances of students.

To harness the latent energy and aesthetic inclinations of the young men and women for a strife free, rich and meaningful campus life; a variety of clubs, cells, committees and study centres have been constituted.

Nila Eco Club also organised a lecture on “Wetland Conservation” by Dr.BijoyNandan, Research Guide, College of Fisheries, Panandadu.

3-Tier student reinforcement activity is practiced in all departments.

PART – D: Outcomes achieved by the end of the year

Digital conference hall was set up. Sophisticated equipments were installed in most of the laboratories. Students hailing from socially and economically backward sections

were offered remedial coaching; it helped students locate their own shortcomings and improving their performance.

A greater number of seminars were conducted; these events proved effective in exposing students to new frontiers of learning and giving them an insight to new research sensibility.

PART – D: Plans for the next year

Internal examination streamlines to be made more effective. Better communication and meaningful interaction with parents. Short term courses with focus on professional expertise.

Organize invited talks and lectures. Familiarize students with e-learning and possibilities of emerging

communication technology. Encourage experiential learning. Find ways of recycling of waste and prevention of environment.
