    Titles for University Positions Policy

    4. DEFINITIONS

    Nil

    5. POLICY STATEMENT

    5.1 The University shall provide appropriate titles for University staff to reflect their level ofresponsibility.

    5.2 An honorary, adjunct or visiting title may be conferred to any person who makes contributions tothe teaching, research and/or scholarship of the University.

    6. OBJECTIVES

    Not included in this policy.

    7. PROCEDURES

    7.1 Senior Executive Positions

    7.1.1 Senior executive positions within the University are titled:

    (i) Vice-Chancellor (appointed as Professor of the University);(ii) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (appointed as Professor);(iii) Executive Dean (appointed as Professor);

    (iv) Pro Vice-Chancellor(v) Executive Director; or(vi) A title to depict the specific nature of the role undertaken (eg Council Secretary, Chief

    Financial Officer).

    An Executive Dean of a Division who is required to represent the University overseas may use thetitle 'Pro Vice-Chancellor' or 'Vice-President' accompanied by the officer's area of responsibility inparentheses, for example Pro Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) or Vice President (Humanities). Thetitle 'Executive Dean' is the only title which may be used for all internal and Australian references.

    7.2 Professorial Positions

    7.2.1 In addition to the Professors of the University (as detailed at paragraph 7.1.1), the following

    types of professorial positions are recognised at the University, for the holders of:

    (i) Personal Chairs - in accordance with the University's Procedures for AcademicPromotion;

    (ii) Named Chairs (i.e. Established and Named Chairs) - in accordance with the University'sProcedures For Appointment To Academic Chair Positions;

    (iii) Emeritus Professor - conferred on Professors who have retired from the University inaccordance with the University's Policy And Procedures For The Award Of The Title"Emeritus Professor"; or

    (iv) Distinguished Professor - in accordance with the University's Policy And Procedures ForThe Award Of The Title 'Distinguished Professor'

    7.2.2 Subject to approval of the Vice-Chancellor, the title of Professor may be conferred on staffwho hold any of the following positions:

    (i) Pro Vice-Chancellor;(ii) Dean;(iii) Chair of the Academic Senate; or(iv) Other senior executive positions of the University as detailed at paragraph 7.1.

    7.3 Academic Management Positions

    7.3.1 In accordance with the University'sAcademic Management Structure policy, whereleadership and/or administrative duties are allocated, the following titles may be used:

    (i) Dean;(ii) Associate Dean;(iii) Dean of Faculty;(iv) Head of School;(v) Head of Department/Area; or(vi) Deputy Head of School

    7.3.2 The use of the title 'Director' would normally be attributed to an appointment at Professor orAssociate Professor level, and related to overall managerial responsibility for a distinct functionalarea (eg Centre or Institute).

    7.4 Management Positions (General Staff)

    7.4.1 The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services) shall determine appropriate titles formanagerial positions occupied by general staff, in accordance with the following provisions:

    (i) Positions with overall responsibility for a functional area shall be titled 'Director', unlessanother title is appropriate to depict the specific nature of the role undertaken (eg ChiefInformation Officer). This title would normally be attributed to appointments within the10B - 10E (inclusive) salary band; and

    (ii) Positions with managerial responsibilities are at 10A salary level or below salary shall betitled 'Manager'.

    7.5 Academic Positions

    7.5.1 An Executive Dean shall determine an appropriate title for an academic position inaccordance with the following provisions:

    (i) The University follows the academic nomenclature of most other Universities, with thefollowing titles used:

    Professor1

    Associate Professor1

    Senior Lecturer

    Lecturer

    Associate Lecturer

    The title of Professor or Associate Professor shall only be granted to persons who holdor have held a full Professorship or Associate Professorship in the tradition of AustralianUniversities or whose professional standing, recognition and achievement clearlywarrants the granting of such title.

    (ii) The title of 'Senior Research Fellow' or 'Senior Teaching Fellow' is used for staff of therank of Senior Lecturer.

    (iii) The title of 'Research Fellow' or 'Teaching Fellow' is used for staff of the rank of Lectureror below.

    (iv) The title of 'Research Assistant' is used for persons lacking postgraduate qualifications

    and experience.

    (v) The University only uses the title 'Doctor' for persons who:

    have been awarded a doctoral degree;

    have been granted an honorary doctorate by Curtin; or

    are medical practitioners.

    7.6 Visiting and Adjunct Positions

    7.6.1 Adjunct or visiting appointments are made in accordance with the University's Proceduresfor the Appointment of Visiting or Adjunct Staff. The term 'adjunct' or 'visiting' would be added as aprefix to a standard University academic title (eg Adjunct Associate Professor), in the followingcircumstances:

    (i) 'Adjunct' appointments may be made where a person makes a regular and significantcontribution to the teaching, research or other activities of the University.

    (ii) 'Visiting' appointments may be made where a person, who is a member of anothereducational or research institution, is engaged in teaching, research or other activities ofthe University.
