Dairy farming sector

• 40 million head of cattle including an estimated 2,5 million dairy cattle

• Breeds: Zebu/Kenana and Butana are the main cattle breeds + HF

• Three main systems of animal production

- Traditional (nomadic, semi nomadic and transhumance; all based on rangeland feeding)

- Intensive farming (irrigated fodder and industrial by-products, near the main cities)

- Feed lot farming (mainly beef farming)

• Annual milk production estimated at 4.8 billion litre

- 50% used for human consumption

- 50% for bakeries and feeding young stock

• Eight (8) major milk processing plants around Khartoum

• Operational output < 50% of installed capacity

• 20,000 MT import of milk powder

• Annual milk consumption / capita is 180.7 kg / year (NL: 320.4 kg / head)

• Increased awareness to reduce importation of food stuffs and milk powder

• Large number of alumni from Dutch agricultural education organisations



Opportunities for the Dutch dairy/agro-sector

• Rehabilitation of existing irrigation schemes (18,630 km²)

• Training and skills development

• Development of medium and large scale farms (dairy and forage production)

• Farm mechanisation

• Supply of cattle and genetics

• Analytical equipment (milk, soil, feed)

• Provision of medicines and vaccines

• Improvement of dairy value chain for the major milk processors

• Provision of milk collection centres and small scale milk processing equipment

• Follow the money (development & equity funds)
