Consider categorizing items by what they’ll be taking with them, what they’ll be selling or donating, and what they’ll be throwing away. Keep in mind that this process will probably take longer than expected, and can be very hard on your loved one. TIPS ON HELPING AN AGING PARENT MOVE

Through all of this, be mindful of what it must feel like for your loved one. Many experience a loss of control and anxiety when leaving their lifelong home. Give them choices throughout the process, and understand that it will not always be easy. Talk to them about where they will be moving, and take advantage of this time to reminisce over old memories and experiences together. Be generous with your loving spirit.

There are many different options available when it comes to actually moving your loved ones’ items. Anything from hiring a full service moving company, to renting a U-Haul or moving truck and doing most of the heavy lifting yourself. Cost becomes the main concern, especially when the move involves crossing several states, but respect your body’s limits. Also, don’t forget to talk to the senior living community — some provide assistance in this area, as well. They may have connections with local moving companies, or will be able to suggest the best option to fit your needs.
