From Maryland…

Hello friends,

During the past year the momentum of the preparations for our 2017 National

Convention in Alexandria has picked up significantly under the very able guidance of our

Convention Chairwoman, Romaine Eyler.

As the Tote Bag Chairperson, I would like to invite all of you, individually or as a club or group, to

consider donating Tote Bag favors. If you plan to donate favors and would like your name or your clubs'

name to appear in the Convention Souvenir Book, we must receive your information by April 1, 2017.

I would like to thank those groups who have already sent us their favors. It is so exciting to see things

starting to come together!

The next big “Coming Attraction” for our region is the NAME Day event on October 1st at Bullocks in

Westminster. This year’s committee has put together a “no host” party that should be very relaxed and

fun. I hope to see many of you there… and so until next time, happy mini-ing!

Nancy

From Virginia…

As I assumed the position as President of our Richmond, Virginia, Miniature

Club, my intent was to inspire Club members with the passion of miniatures that

we all share. My first task was to poll the club for ideas, so I prepared a survey

that was distributed to club members. I was eager to learn more about their

specific interests, read their ideas and gain a better understanding of their levels

of expertise. The responses were impressive. Our members are excited to share

their creations with others, both at craft shows and in public arenas. As I’ve told

so many, “My dollhouses do nothing if they’re just sitting in my home!”

Our Club is sprinkled with a vast level of experience, beginning with the ‘newbie,’ who is just entering

the world of miniatures, to our most talented members that have indulged in dollhouses most of their

lives. The enthusiasm in our Club is wide-spread and addictive.

Our members have reached out to the Richmond community and beyond. Dollhouses have been displayed

at local retirement communities, both in Richmond and in Massachusetts. Three organizations have

invited our members to display their dollhouse and diorama creations during the Christmas holidays. The

State Fair of Virginia is right around the corner, and yes, we will be well represented at that event,

alongside the homemade pies, quilts and wood carvings. A “Slice of Americana!”

As I prepare for our upcoming year, establishing a calendar of workshops at each meeting was an easy

effort through the generosity of ideas from our Club. Those ‘Newbies’ I mentioned????? They’re coming

out of their shells by admitting that they know more about miniatures than initially thought. They have

offered snippets of ideas and techniques that have benefited all of our club members. Our more

experienced members have agreed to ‘buddy up’ with those less experienced to provide support and

encouragement. It’s a system that works well!

I’m new to this club, and already I’m discovering the goodness in our members. They vary in ages,

backgrounds and careers. They share their stories… both happy and sad. We come together once a month

and are delighted to see one another… greeting with hugs and smiles. What’s not to like?!!

Our NAME Day meeting will be held at Pine Camp Cultural Arts Center, a venue contributed by a club

member. We will gather to continue the tradition of creating NAME Day memorabilia, as will so many

other Clubs around the nation.

In the grand scheme of things, we are a tiny ‘blip’ on the radar screen of life. We’re focused on a national

Presidential election, tragedy around the world, the upcoming hurricane season, and the Summer

Olympics in Rio. In our little miniature cocoon, we are successfully carrying out the mission of the

NAME organization: “to promote miniatures through education, collecting and building friendships and

skills through the sharing of experiences and ideas.” It is time well spent and memories created that will

last for a lifetime.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE TYSONS SHOW

Molly and I are looking for volunteers for her Tyson's Miniature Show on Sept 17th and 18th. We need a couple miniaturists to organize the Children's Workshop (a make and take) on Sunday between 12:30 and 3, and a couple of miniaturists to organize the Exhibits Display. Our regular volunteers, Nancy Chalmers, Jane Schwarz, Donna Lulchuk and George Pendergraph, who have taken on this responsibility for years, are all unavailable this year. Of course, you will get free admission to the show Preview and to the show for the entire weekend. Please let your club members know that we would appreciate their help. Thank You, Mary ([email protected])

The 2017 NAME Convention Fundraiser, sponsored by the

Friday Conundrums Miniature Club, was an amazing event! Fried

chicken at Bullock’s Family Restaurant in Westminster, Maryland, is

always wonderful, and we were treated to lovely and delicious

cupcakes and Bullock’s fabulous homemade ice cream for dessert.

The project was a very clever clown

mobile, and almost everyone

finished his or her kits. They will

make a cute addition to a toy shop or

circus-themed vignette. In addition to some wonderful totebag items,

there were silent auctions and gifts spaced throughout the day, which lent

to the excitement.

The Friday Conundrums outdid themselves, and if this was any indication

of what lies ahead, you WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS CONVENTION

in Alexandria, Virginia ~ July 27-30, 2017!

Here are some of the highlights of the event:

Meet the Tiger Trainer by Romaine Eyler

This past June I had the opportunity to travel to Baraboo, Wisconsin, to attend the Circus Model Builders

National Convention. I was fascinated with the young man who owns eight tigers that were performing

on the grounds.

Ryan grew up in a family where animals were a big part of

his young life. His father was the care- taker of the

elephants in a zoo. Ryan fell in love with the tigers at an

early age and at age 17, he had the opportunity to purchase

several of the cats. He was always interested in the

husbandry of tigers and has studied their behavior, culture

and habits since childhood. At 28 years of age, he is well

versed in the language and behavior of his tigers. He is the

proud owner of eight beautiful tigers, six female and two

male tigers. The males are neutered, for safety reasons. The

females are intact and can be quite contrary when in heat.

One day I watched Ryan cut up raw meat as treats for the

tigers. After he was finished, he walked in the pen and one of the tigers smelled his hands and licked the

juice off. I was astonished that the tiger did not see this as a good meal and take the hand. After the tiger

got his taste, he just wandered off. Another time I observed Ryan make paw prints of the tiger’s foot.

The tiger just sat there, looking around, while Ryan lifted his paw, rolled on paint and placed his paw on a

canvas. These prints are sold in the gift shop to help support the wild tigers in the Sumatran Tiger

Preserve. Ryan is both politically active and a conservator of the wild tigers.

Ryan seems to have eyes in 360 degrees! Even if his back is turned to the tigers, he knows exactly what

each tiger is doing. Tigers sleep 18 to 20 hour a day. When not asleep they need mental, tactile and

physical stimulation. You can watch Ryan interact with his tigers by going to “Show Me Tigers” on

YouTube ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ygOolNeY8. You will see Ryan interact with the

tigers, and the tigers “talk” with Ryan. Ryan interacts with his tigers just like I interact with my two

domestic cats. They get petted, cuddled, talked with, played with and loved. These tigers have a

wonderful and full life. They could not be happier animals.

One of his tigers is white, which is caused by a recessive gene. She is a beautiful girl, and she has a

brother from the same litter that has the normal tiger color.

It was interesting to learn the names of his eight tigers. The females are named Zola, Zabara, Zerd, Zeyla,

Zuri, and Zuku. The two males in the group are named Zeus and Diego.

I wish we could have these beautiful animals perform at our “Come to the Circus” Convention, but of

course that is not possible, so we will have miniature tigers and trainers at the convention. “See you down

the Road!”

DON’T FORGET TO “COME TO THE CIRCUS” IN 2017!!

There have been major changes to this year’s Holiday Party. Be sure to save the new date!

Once Upon a Time December 3, 2016, 11am to 3pm

Bullock’s Family Restaurant

2020 Sykesville Road, Westminster, Maryland

Please join The Conundrums and MEOW as we host the 2016 Annual Region E-1 Holiday Party. We

will have planned an afternoon of wonderful miniature delights. Visit with your mini friends, view the

holiday-themed exhibits and, hopefully, our usual surprise guest, Santa, will be available for photo

opportunities.

We have decided to go against tradition and announce our project before the Party. It will be a one inch

scale Bebe House. Sample completed houses will be on display at the NAME event on October 1st. You

can decorate this adorable little cabinet in a holiday theme of your choice or in any décor you wish. So

think about your theme and bring paint, wall paper, etc. to decorate your house. In addition to your usual

tool kit, bring a gluing jig and your favorite wood glue.

If you want to participate in the Door Prize exchange, please check the blank on the registration form.

Door prizes will be awarded on a bring-one-get-one basis. Please wrap your gift and label it with your

name. The prizes should be valued in the $15 to $20 range. You will be given a ticket and names will be

pulled. We hope everyone will want to participate and receive an extra surprise.

Lunch is on your own from Bullock’s Family Restaurant’s wonderful, yet inexpensive menu. Purchase

your lunch from the cafeteria or the deli. They offer a wide variety of sandwiches and dinners, ranging in

price from $2.99 for a hot dog to $20.95 for a 16 oz. Porterhouse steak dinner. Dessert will be provided

by the hosting clubs.

***Space is limited, so please send in your registration form with payment no later than November 10,

2016.

“Once Upon A Time”

The Annual Region E-1 Holiday Party will be held on December 3, 2016, 11:00 to 3:00, at Bullocks. You don’t need to be a member of NAME to attend

this event. In fact, this might be a good way to introduce a Newbie to NAME, so consider bringing a

friend or family member. Sharpen up you pencils and add this event to your wish list!

AROUND OUR REGION

Pat Johns, a member of the Inch by Inch Miniature Club of Annapolis, put on a one-woman show for the

benefit of her fellow residents at Collington Retirement Community in Mitchellville, MD. There are two

very large showcases in the main lobby, which lend themselves to a wonderful display area. Pat's

creations have been met with such enthusiasm from the staff and residents. Here are some of photos of

the display.
