From Your Regional Coordinator:
I want to congratulate our own Mary Myers for receiving the Regional
Ambassador award. She called me to let me know and seemed just a
“little” excited. Mary, you deserve this award. Thank you for all you do
for the Region.
You know, it is fun to spend time with miniaturists one-on-one. Recently
I had the privilege to spend an hour with a very fine and very fun
miniaturist. No, I am not going to mention her name because she knows
who she is. She spent time out of her busy workday to take me around her
office to show me where she works; introducing me to the people she
works with. That was neat in and of its self. The neatest thing, however,
was the happiness that she exuded about her best miniature friends. You
could tell that they had a very close relationship. To me that is what being
a miniaturist is all about: fun and our chosen “family”. Needless to say, I
left there in a very sunny mood despite the dreary, clouded day.
I did not go to Tucson National this year and I sure hear that I missed a lot
of fun; however I had something much more important happen this year.
Many of you know that my daughter and I have been waiting for the day
that she could go pick up her little girl from the Congo. Laura left on the
14th of July to fly to Kinshasa. She related a story about a “hair-raising
ride in a Kinshasa taxi.” She was also pleased that all four of her bags
landed with her. I am including with this article a picture of our new
granddaughter (see page 14) (to whom I am Koko Mimi – Grandmother
Mimi). We feel very blessed that she is part of our family.
I have spent nearly 4 years as your Regional Coordinator and have gotten
to know a lot of you better. I feel that our Region has become a very
cohesive group and that brings me joy to no end. We have had three State
Days in three years and will have another in 2014 in Maryland as well as
one in 2015 in Virginia. With the State Days, NAME Days, House Party
in the Gazette, Yard Sales, Exhibits, I believe that we are quite an active
group. Now, we are getting ready to work on the biggest event that I
personally have ever been involved in and that is a National Convention
here in our Region. There will be more information to come and most of
it you will read in the Tiny Tattler.
There is one other thing that I want to do and that is to invite you to
recommend or volunteer for the positions created by the end of my term.
You can do that privately to me at my email. Meanwhile, I wish you all a
wonderful fall and a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

… From your Maryland State Rep…
Tucson National Convention 2013
The trip out to Tucson on Sunday was awful. Our flight was delayed out of BWI so Nancy Chalmers and
I missed our connection in Houston. The United Airlines desk put us on stand-by for a 6:00 pm. flight. If
we could not get on the 6:00 p.m. flight, the next guaranteed flight was TUESDAY, we were so frustrated
when we heard this that we were crying and laughing at the same time. We spent the next 12 hours in the
Houston Airport; the 6:00 p.m. flight was iffy to the last minute, but we made it. Tuesday, really, that’s
the best you can do!!! In contrast, the Delta flight home was seamless.
The hotel was beautiful. Tucson is in a bowl surrounded by mountains. The hotel was up against the
mountains; the five buildings were arranged in a circle with a pool and gardens in the middle. I think they
must feed the staff happy pills, every one smiled and was most helpful. It rained almost every afternoon
or evening and provided an opportunity for some gorgeous pictures. It seems the tarantulas live in the
ground and two of them crawled up the wall in the hallway near our room until the puddles dried up. This
species is not aggressive or lethal, but boy are they BIG and furry. On the flip side, Saturday evening we
watched a wedding outside our patio that had the mountain sunset as a back drop. Ah!
I took three workshops and learned a bit about painting – especially that I need way more practice. The
salesroom, swaps, roundtables, Mega round tables and garage sales were all very well run!! Romaine
won our Centerpiece, our whole table is so jealous. No one at our table won any Houseparty Helpers
(Boo!) I did buy a shoe box full of old furniture at the silent auction. A few of the pieces I saw in a
display at the Mini Time Machine Museum. What an awesome museum, if you are ever in Tucson, don’t
miss it.
And Ta-da! … I was awarded the Ambassador award for E-1. I was so surprised and very pleased.
Thank you, thank you!
Helen looked happy and rested. She is enjoying her grandchildren and has found some miniature friends
as well. The miniature community sounds pretty active; not as active as E-1, but….. Helen drove us
around to a couple of Mexican restaurants where we feasted on homemade tamales and fish tacos. So
yummy! Miss you Helen.
So if you haven’t ever gone to a Convention,
you should really put it on your bucket list. So
much fun… so many goodies… so many mini
friends.
Until next time,
Mary

FROM NAME!
While in Tucson, I stayed over a few days to visit my good friend Helen Sparks in Maracopa. Arizona
is beautiful, tarantulas and all. Yes we had two clinging to the hall wall outside the room for a few days.
They were fun to watch. Road runners, jack rabbits, quail, snakes, owls all visited us on our trip. Of course
you have read Roy’s account of his daily walks; to see that flower would have been so exciting.
NAME really keeps us busy. First it was Lexington, then Tucson, and now we are getting ready for the
Gazette Houseparty, NAME Day, and the On Line Houseparty. There is never a dull moment with NAME.
Sometimes I think I have to run faster to keep up!
Tucson was a wonderful convention as you know from all the online chatter. I like the new and
innovative things this committee did with changing the time of some events. I liked the business meeting
after the opening luncheon. I think we sometimes lose sight of the fact that the business meeting is the most
important thing at the convention. I know it is hard to believe, but it is true, remember the IRS. Most people
stayed for the meeting, which was good. Guess we will see if anything takes by the next few Conventions.
This is my last monthly letter to you. Leslie Swager is now the Club Liaison on the board. I have
enjoyed my time serving the membership and the support you have given me. I wish I could have met each
of you personally. I know you will give Leslie the same support that you gave to me. Thank you.
Warmly,
Romaine Past Club Liaison

HOUSEPARTY IN THE GAZETTE!
A Houseparty for Everyone…
A complete Houseparty, with all the same goodies as a regular
Houseparty, was in your May/June 2013 issue of the Miniature
Gazette. If you like to do swaps, be thinking about what you
want to make (the deadline has been extended to August 23rd
!).
If you like kits, they can be ordered; if you are a scratch builder,
there is plenty for you to do.
Everyone can have a centerpiece at this convention. There’s
something for everyone, and how much fun it will be if you
share the experience with your clubs(s) in your region! All three
scales are represented. Here is a picture of one of the 1/2” scale
centerpieces. Just how would you finish one of these?
For those participating in the August 24th
“Retreat” at Bullock’s Restaurant,
please bring your MINIATURE GAZETTE MAGAZINE with you!

If you are planning to register for Maryland State Day 2014, the
committee *** STRONGLY *** recommends that you cut your “stones” for your outside
walls ahead of time. It will save you the tedious time of cutting them during the State Day
event and will allow you to have more time for fun and construction during the workshop.
Using paper mâché egg crates: For the 1” scale veranda, you will need
approximately 300 pieces of irregularly
cut “stones” that measure roughly 1/2” in
diameter.
For the 1/2” scale veranda, you will need
approximately 300 pieces of irregularly
cut stones that measure roughly 1/4” in
diameter (or roughly the size of an eraser
tip on a pencil).
