Song of the Day

MAALA – ALA MO KAYA

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

From the President Pres. Ramy Garcia IV Fellow Pasig Rotarians: Last night, we had a series of meetings that dealt with the various club and district activities for the remainder of the Rotary year starting with District Rotary Day 2014. PE Ner Laino as the Rotary Day Chairman, called for a meeting with PP Conrad Cuesta, PP Peter Javier, PP Jun Zafra, PP Benny de Guzman, Dir Jess Acantilado and myself. Since we have been doing medical missions with our sister club from San Diego, it is really just replicating what we already know. Dir. Jess has come up with a list of doctors, nurses, equipment and medicines needed for the medical mission. We have invited the BCP's from other clubs within the zone to discuss in detail the assignments and responsibilities of each club. After the meeting, the Rotary Day Committee headed by PE Ner will be going to Rizal High to do an ocular visit and to map out the whole event. Next on the agenda was club attendance where in all Pangkat leaders and co-leaders where invited to join the meeting. Strategies on how to encourage and monitor attendance of members were discussed. To try to see if we can improve attendance, we will have an evening meeting on Nov 20. The pangkat assigned for that meeting headed by Sec Peter John Javier with the help of Rtn. Ben Baniel will organize this meeting

From the President continuation 1… Pres. Ramy Garcia IV come fellowship. Venue was originally set at the Sports Den but has now been moved back to La Colina. This is being piloted to attract those absentee members to attend as well as new prospects. PP Rhett has called on all PP's for a monthly meeting. They met last month at the Sports Den where everyone brought unique pulutans like the Kapalmuks that PP Sonny Samson brought when PDG Raffy Garcia indicated that this was very good. Kapalmuks is a different version of lechon kawali. It is the deep-fried half of the pig’s head with the face sliced up into squares. So you will be served half of the pig’s head that has been deep-fried to perfection. Masarap pero pampabata talaga! But, this fellowship is for Past Presidents only unless you are invited. So, I came up with another fellowship still hosted by a Past President at his residence or a venue of his choice. This will be started by PDG Raffy at his residence at 15 Molave Forbes Park on Nov 15 after our medical mission. Our sister club from Korea will also be invited as a farewell dinner since they are leaving the next day. The next fellowship will be in January at the new residence of PP Lito Ayson. I’m sure that when you go to PP Lito’s place, you will never want to leave. Ask Rtn Ben and Rtn Bart who almost did not leave till PP Lito called his security. I will leave the details for you to see for yourself.

Rotary Notes PP Benny P. De Guzman Our last two weeks’ speakers were both Rotarians. But the Meralco fellow is an on-leave Rotarian, while PP Rolly Gosiengfiao of BCDA is still active. Mayroon bang on leave na allowed? Is paying his dues? One of the brightest in government including how he analyzes his vast resources and inputs for a better Philippines is this Rolly. He knows his beef and he can really produce for the government. It is not the appearance of the airport making ours one of the dirtiest. It is the number of runways and the efficiency of handling the flights. We have to move out of the Paranaque area and there are just three worthwhile sites: Subic, Clark, or Sangley. Would you realize how efficiently the Americans covered all these three for a long, long time. Strategic locations strategic for the country. We learn always late in life. Presidentiable Ogie led the fining in a very unusual state last week. One set lang, those who had 100% attendance, including him since July, and, those who did not make the grade. Parang sinabi niya those present are fined, those absent are fined in absentia. PE Ner made sure that our commitments on Rotary Day on 15th November in our Zone is a day to remember. Legal is assigned to Pasig Central without them realizing we have the most number of lawyers in our club. Today is our second time to honor the companions of ours who have gone ahead, some spouses, and even siblings and children. What better memorial day than a few days before All Saints Day when we honor our dead.

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

Rotary Notes continuation… PP Benny P. De Guzman It is ironic that we lost contact with many relative of former companions but they will always be remembered. PP Ed Bolinao said that the main church he was too engrossed in has been blessed and the relics of a pope saint has been enshrined thereat. He has been so successful that his real business was already endorsed to his son. He reported that brother Rey, former Rotarian, who had a shouting match decades before, is fast recovering from a stroke and he is getting his speech back. PP Kit of Pasig East promised to attend a week after the cremation of his beloved dad, our CP Totoy Angeles. I remember Totoy who was blessed being a Pasig Rotarian as the carnapper, who took his Benz four decades ago had the misfortune of staying near the place of the late PVP Benny Hernando. After only two weeks, he got his Benz back and the culprit caught. Totoy was closer to the two late guys, Justo and Joe Jota. Both Totoy and Justo were past presidents of the prestigious Philippine Contractors Association. PP Peter kept noticing that our attendance of past presidents is very good. Why should not a past president bring one each of those perennially absent? PP Romy Manuel was at the wake of CP Totoy. Like him, PP Esto had to go lunchtime because of the unforgivable traffic that might make them miss their bedtime? A little bird told me that PN Noel is not keen on being PN. Gusto mo PE? Ner may accommodate you basta you accept. Anyway, the first five of BCP Ramy, Sec Peter John, Service Direk Jess, Direk Public Image Garrick, Direk Club Administration Ogie & Direk Membership Ray are reliable take-over guys. They are always everywhere and can serve on better ways anytime

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

Walking the Avenues PP Jun C. Zafra Dynamic Young Club Uses Social Media To Grow Erin Mills had just finished teaching for the day in Montevideo, Uruguay, when her smartphone buzzed with a message. An impromptu gathering to watch Uruguay's World Cup soccer match was being organized. Through the power of a mobile messaging app, a majority of the Rotary Club of Plaza Matriz had soon assembled at a member's home to munch on baked goods and chips while rooting for their national team. That enthusiasm and ability to draw a crowd has made the club, which just received its charter in July, a success in the country's capital city. Made up almost entirely of young professionals, it is the kind of club Rotary is eager to have more of. It has also served as a bridge back to Rotary for former members of Rotaract, who must leave the program when they turn 30. Mills says she could tell the club had something special by its third meeting. "It turned into a brainstorming session of all the projects we wanted to do. No idea was too large or too small." An "Oscars for Rotary" The club has partnered with PORSALEU, a local charity that provides a place for leukemia patients and their families to stay close to the hospital when they travel to the city for treatment. They held their first fundraiser during the World Cup, auctioning off a jersey signed by Uruguayan footballer Cristian Rodríguez -- through social media. And they're planning a Rotary award night to recognize and encourage humanitarian service, which they are calling the "Golden Wheel."

Walking the Avenues continuation 1 … PP Jun C. Zafra "It's like an Oscars for Rotary," Mills explains. "Clubs that enter have a chance to win a Golden Wheel in categories such as best outreach program for new members, best service project." Members are conducting workshops to teach other Rotary members in the city how to use social media to their advantage. How the club got started For Mills, the club has also offered a way to get reestablished in Uruguay. She came to Montevideo in 2008 on a scholarship sponsored by the Rotary Club of Casa Grande, Arizona, USA, and joined the Rotaract Club of Paso Molino. After completing her scholarship, she returned to Arizona and began a long-distance relationship with one of the Rotaractors she had met during her studies. Realizing that her heart was in Uruguay in more ways than one, she completed an advanced degree in bilingual education and returned. She is now teaching future English language educators at the University of Montevideo and middle school students from around the world at an American International School. Finding a new group to connect with wasn't initially easy. She looked for a Rotary club to join but couldn't find one that "had the right vibe." They either were too far from her home or didn't offer the sense of family she was searching for as an expatriate. Many of her friends had left the Paso Molino Rotaract Club. About the same time, Nicolas Ortiz, a member of the Rotary Club of Montevideo and chair of the district's New Generations committee, began running into many of Mills' old friends. He realized that all of these former Rotaractors and the former Rotary Scholar would be the ideal core for a new club, so he encouraged them to start one.

Walking the Avenues continuation 2 … PP Jun C. Zafra "We were all a little intimidated by the responsibility. Where do you even start? And then there's the financial responsibility involved," Mills recalls. "But he helped us and got his club to sponsor many of our costs, and his club eventually became our sponsor club." From there, district leaders took the group under their wing. Past District Governor Antonio Nocetti Ruiz got other district officers together to advise them on the steps they needed to take to found the club and even attended many of the unofficial planning meetings. "We're excited to bring Rotary into the next generation," says Mills. Learn how Rotary empowers young people through Interact and Rotaract Learn more about Rotary's scholarship programs By Arnold R. Tinig Tidbits Rtn. Kel Pascual GREATNESS OF ORDINARY LIFE On our fourth day in Lisbon, we headed for Madrid for the beatification of Fr Alvaro Del Portillo, first successor of St Josemaria, founder of Opus Dei. We took the budget airline Easy Jet, by internet before we left Manila, at only $53 per person, for a distance of 630 km. This is about P2,400, much like the cost of a one-way fare to Legaspi and almost that to Cebu with our own budget airlines. Easy Jet operates in almost all key cities in Europe. Easy Jet operates at Terminal 2, a budget terminal separate from Lisbon's main Terminal 1, and requires riding an airport standing-only shuttle bus from the main terminal. Terminal 2 is like a warehouse, without air-conditioning when we got there at about 1pm. When most of the other passengers started getting in, only was the air-conditioning turned on. When called to boarding we got surprised Easy Jet is very strict with hand-carry's, it has to be strictly one piece only, meaning if a woman is carrying a hand bag, that must be her only hand-carry. In that trip we brought hand-carry luggages only because we had many transfers, a total of five airport transfers not counting Manila, and all our transpo were all public transpo, either subway or public bus. So Annie, our son Illian, and I were each bringing a hand-carry main luggage and another small bag. We were not allowed to board until we transferred all items from the small bags to the main luggage. The flight was full, which implies it is more practical and economical to take a budget airline for such distances than the train or the bus. We arrived Madrid late afternoon of Wednesday, Sept 24th. A very good impression for me, Madrid has a subway terminal right in its Barajas International Airport. Barajas is huge, it has something like four terminals. We took a 5-day subway ticket, which would be more economical than buying ticket each time you take the subway, called the Metro. Madrid's Metro has ten lines, about as extensive as London's and Paris'

Tinig Tidbits continuation… Rtn. Kel Pascual About two months before the trip, I was already able to book a hotel for Madrid via internet, in the city center. It was a room for three and priced very well, with breakfast included. About a few days later, the internet hotel booking portal e-mailed me that the hotel does not want to accept American Express, the card I used, and that I have to rebook again with either Visa or Mastercard. I wasn't able to do so immediately because that was the time we were busy working out our Schengen visas: scheduling, all supporting documents required, bank certificates, etc. By the time I was able to get back again to that hotel, it was barely a month before the beatification, so there was already a mad scramble for hotels in Madrid. Estimates of attendees to the beatification numbered about 300,000 of which about 95% were from outside of Madrid, so the room rates had already skyrocketed. I was able to get a hotel, still well priced, but already in the suburbs, in a district called Arganda Del Rey. In the map it is in the southeast of Madrid, but I saw it was still in the subway map, actually the last stop of one of the ten lines of the Metro, so I took it. Before we left Manila I already plotted the public transpo for the hotel, via internet. We were supposed to go down at the Poveda Stn, the second to the last stop then walk about 2 km. But since the name of our hotel was Ibis Arganda, we went down instead at Arganda Stn, thinking it would be nearer than the 2 km walk. When we were exiting the station barriers to get to out to the street, the barrier doors didn't want to open. Nice thing with the Lisbon and Madrid Metro's there's always a ticket officer deployed in every station. Apparently our 5-day Metro pass was only good up to the Metro Madrid radius, and Poveda and Arganda Stns were outside of that radius. So we paid extra for the segment that our 5-day pass did not cover. When we went out to the street, we asked for directions to our hotel and that was about past 7pm already. Those we asked were kind enough to show the directions so we started walking, with hand-carry luggages in tow, in the darkness and cold of an autumn European night. (to be continued)

Tinig Tidbits PP Peter M. Javier HALLOWEEN 1. Even in ancient times, Halloween was a

festival for witches, goblins, and ghosts, as well as for lighting bonfires and playing devilish pranks. What had changed over the centuries are the reasons for the dressing up ghoulishly, lighting fires, and acting mischievous. Now these things are done for fun – and by children; in the past, they were done in deathly earnest – and by adults.

2. Named “All Hallows Eve,” the festival was first celebrated by

the ancient Celts in Ireland in the 5th century B.C., on the night of October 31, then the official end of summer. The Celts believed that on October 31, all persons who had died in the previous year assembled to choose the body of the person or animal they would inhabit for the next twelve months. Thus, Halloween customs originated as a means of frightening away spirits eager to possess the living.

3. The Romans adopted Celtic Halloween practices, but in A.D.

61 they outlawed human sacrifice, substituting the Egyptian customs of effigies.

4. Irish immigrants fleeing their country’s potato famine in the

1840s brought to America with them the Halloween customs of costume and mischief. The favorite pranks played by New England Irish youths on “mischief night” were overturning outhouses and unhinging front gates.

lantern, a large turnip hollowed out and carved with a demon’s face and lighted from the inside with a candle. Immigrants found few turnips in their new land but numerous fields of pumpkins Whereas the Pilgrims had made the edible part of the pumpkin a hallmark of Thanksgiving, the Irish made the outer shell synonymous with Halloween.

6. The Trick or Treat traces the practice of the 9th century

European custom of “souling.” On All Soul’s Day, Christians walked from village to village begging for square biscuits with currants, called soul cakes. The beggars promised to offer up prayers for the dead relatives of the donors, the number of prayers to be proportional to the donor’s generosity.
