EDITOR’S NOTE Strategic vision, tenacity and commitment are some of the traits that define a great leader, as are the relentless pursuit of new opportunities and persistence which have all propelled IOI Group to become a global force under the hands of Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng. His leadership efforts earned him the prestigious Palm Oil Industry Leadership Award 2015 (page 06), and in this issue, we witness how leadership traits play a key role in advancing IOI’s businesses.

The acquisition of Cremer Oleo's entire oleochemical manufacturing business opens up new opportunities and enables IOI Oleochemical Industries Bhd (IOI Oleo) to move further up the value chain into a more specialised downstream oleochemical manufacturing business. This synergistic move (highlighted in Cover Feature), together with its successive initiatives, including Acidchem’s first production and shipment of RSPO SG fatty acids (page 15), has served to cement IOI Oleo’s position as a leading oleochemical player and ensured the growing momentum of its leading presence.

The commitment to excel is also evident in IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) which has been gearing up with increased efforts to spur the leading vegetable oils and fats company to greater heights since the unveiling of its Vision 2025. On 9 September 2015, it officially launched a new corporate video that was showcased to various customers and notable exhibitions, including the MPOC Networking Seminar in Poland. So far, response has been positive. Turn to page 18 for a peek at its contents, or better still, view it at www.ioiloders.com. Another milestone is noted in IOILC’s journey to sustainability and transparency as it obtains the first ISCC certification for its shea supply chain (page 17).

Meanwhile, team spirit and fitness run high as IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) in JB take to the streets with the community in the 11th Putra Charity Run (page 12). Check out the rest of the Property segment for this positive spirit in action.

Over in our hotels and malls, joy and excitement are on the menu as the festive spirit abounds, and closer relationships are forged with shoppers and employees. Indeed, IOIPG’s completion of two direct ramps (a RM35 million flyover and RM15 million slip road) to IOI Resort City is a timely effort that enhances strategic access and provides greater convenience.

Lastly, it is good to note that IOI Corporation Berhad (IOIC) and IOIPG’s Annual Reports have been released (view the full report of IOIC at www.ioigroup.com and IOIPG at www.ioiproperties.com.my) in expectation of a satisfactory performance for the remaining financial period.

Oleochemicals are used in a wide variety of applications such as the manufacturing of detergents, surfactants, shampoos, soaps, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, food additives and plastics. From

the food and pharmaceutical to the paint and textile industries, its diversity and versatility has boosted its global demand, and by 2019, the oleochemical’s market size is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.2% to reach $25.91 billion.

CULTIVATING PARTNERSHIP, ENHANCING VALUE

Driven by new growth opportunities in the international oleochemical market, IOI Oleochemical Industries Berhad (IOI Oleo), one of the world’s leading oleochemical producers, made a strategic acquisition in line with its mission “to be a leading producer and supplier of quality oleochemicals and related products by consistently satisfying customers’ needs through continuous improvement and sustaining long-term growth.”

Strategic Growth in New Frontiers On 9 September 2015, IOI Oleo entered into a conditional asset purchase agreement with Cremer Oleo GmbH & Co KG (Cremer Oleo) to acquire Cremer Oleo’s entire oleochemical manufacturing business in Germany for a total purchase consideration of 89.4 million (RM433.3 million). The agreement was sealed through IOI Oleo’s indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Alstersee 217. V V GmbH (to be renamed as IOI Oleo GmbH in the future).

Cremer Oleo has two production facilities located in Witten and Wittenberge with a combined processing capacity of approximately 39,200 MT per annum. Both are strategically located at the centre of European Union, giving close proximity to key markets in Western Europe and emerging ones in Eastern Europe. The production plant in Witten offers a broad array of mostly branded oleochemicals specialty products for the pharmaceutical, personal care, cosmetic, food and performance chemicals markets worldwide. Meanwhile, the Wittenberge plant provides high performance capacities for esterification with multi-step short-path distillation, distillation and fractionation of fatty acids, and production of medium-chain triglycerides.

The acquisition is one of IOI Oleo’s numerous progressive efforts underlining its guiding mantra of “Cultivating Partnership, Enhancing Value” that steers IOI Oleo to continuously create mutually-beneficial relationships and forge lasting value for its business since the inception of the first palm-based oleochemicals manufacturing facility in the 1980s.

The timely and synergistic acquisition* enables IOI Oleo to move further up the value chain into a more specialised downstream oleochemicals manufacturing business, particularly into the higher margin pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and performance chemicals market worldwide. It will also enable the transfer of advanced technical, research and development (R&D), application development and process know-how back to Malaysia that will benefit IOI Oleo’s existing production sites in Penang and Johor.

Sustaining Cutting-Edge CapabilitiesLed by IOI Oleo Executive Director Mr Tan Kean Hua, IOI Oleo’s production sites consist of wholly-owned subsidiaries Acidchem International Sdn Bhd, Derichem (M) Sdn Bhd and IOI Esterchem (M) Sdn Bhd (IOI Esterchem) in Prai, Penang, and IOI Pan-Century Oleochemicals Sdn Bhd (IOI Pan-Cen) in Pasir Gudang, Johor. With a current combined total capacity of 740,000 MT per annum, IOI Oleo supplies to a global customer base in more than 60 countries worldwide including China, India, Japan and Europe.

Its manufacturing facilities are accredited by globally-recognised bodies in various areas of quality and international standards of compliance to ensure production of top-notch quality products such as Palmac (fatty acids and glycerine), Palmsabun (soap noodles) and Palmsurf (esters). With these, IOI Oleo recorded a sales of 586,076 MT for FY2015.

IOI Oleo’s latest development and pursuit towards constant improvement includes the IOI Esterchem that was developed in line with the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme’s (ETP) Entry Point Project (EPP) 6 under the Palm Oil National Key Economic Area (NKEA). Whilst some parts of the RM130 million ester plant are in the final stages of commissioning, IOI Esterchem has commenced production of products for commercial sale whilst it continues to expand its product portfolio catering for the food, pharmaceutical, personal care and cosmetics segments. With increasing support from customers expressing confidence in the ester plant, IOI Esterchem looks forward to the full commissioning and increased response from customers.

Meanwhile, the need to expand production capacity to meet increasing market demand led IOI Oleo to invest in upgrading existing manufacturing facilities.

Over in Johor, IOI Pan-Cen revamped its existing fractionation plant to meet market demands. With a capex of RM12 million, the revamp also included establishing additional storage tanks for palm kernel oil (PKO)-based products. Previously it had completed a new RM13.5 million beader plant capable of 120 TPD to expand production of fatty acids beads and improve its operational efficiency.

Driving Sustainability & QualityIOI Oleo’s leadership position is also seen in the key roles played in ensuring sustainability compliance and traceability of palm oil supply chain. IOI Oleo’s leadership positions in industry bodies include chairing the ASEAN Oleochemical Manufacturers Group’s (AOMG) Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Working Committee, Member of RSPO Trade and Traceability Standing Committee and RSPO Oleo and Derivatives Steering Committee. Testament to its expertise, IOI Oleo also actively provides familiarisation trainings to regional RSPO officials, certification bodies, and members of the AOMG and Malaysian Oleochemical Manufacturers Group (MOMG).

Its sustainability effort gained further traction when Acidchem International successfully achieved first production and shipment of RSPO Segregated (SG) fatty acids (please turn to page 15 for more information).

COVER FEATURE

BERITAIOI 05IOI Oleo also leads in the way in embracing eco-technology in its processes; with a recent example being the installation of a 6.5 MW co-generation (co-gen) plant in Prai to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs as well as emissions of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide. This RM30 million investment is among several industry-leading green advancements – among others, solar energy system and a biogas boiler innovation which led to a significant reduction of CO2 – initiated by the company to spearhead future sustainable growth.

IOI Oleo’s solar energy panels in Prai yielded savings equivalent to the need to plant 1.4 million sq m of forest.

Similarly, IOI Pan-Cen invests substantially in eco-technology and was duly recognised at the international Vienna Energy Forum where its energy management projects were shared with the panellists and invited guests. It also received the “Leadership in Energy Performance” award for contributing towards energy efficiency. Its participation is covered on page 13 of this issue.

Building a Progressive FutureWith its continuous effort to strive for operational excellence, improved productivity, embarkation into the new fatty esters production, coupled with the recent strategic acquisition, IOI Oleo is on the right track to fortify its strength and expand into new territories as it capitalises on the resilient demand from customers in a thriving oleochemical industry.

The valuable support from loyal customers as well as accolades plus prestigious awards and recognitions for its good manufacturing practices also allow IOI Oleo to further consolidate its stature as one of the world’s leading oleochemical producers.

Moving forward, IOI Oleo will continue to focus on businesses that give better returns. As it excels towards enhanced quality and leverages on its reputable record, IOI Oleo is determined to sustain and increase market share while expanding its customer base.

*Subject to regulatory approvals by the relevant authorities of Malaysia and Germany at time of publication, the acquisition is likely to conclude by the first quarter of 2016.

IOI Oleo expanded the production capacity of its oleic acid facility in Prai with an output capacity of 17,000 MT per annum.

Corporation Berhad (IOIC) posted a profit before interest and taxation (PBIT) of RM334.4 million for

the fourth quarter ended 30 June 2015 (Q4 FY2015) as compared to RM413.2 million a year ago. The 19% decrease in PBIT is due mainly to lower contribution from the plantation division.

The plantation division’s Q4 FY2015 profit decreased by 26% to RM235.8 million from RM318.6 million due mainly to lower crude palm oil (CPO) price realised. In this quarter under review, average CPO price realised was RM2,197/MT against RM2,661/MT previously. As for the resource-based manufacturing division, its profit of RM99.1 million for Q4 FY2015 is 4% lower than RM103.7 million reported for Q4 FY2014. The lower profit is mainly due to lower margin from the refining sub-segment; moderated by better margin from the specialty oils and fats sub-segment.

Excluding the net foreign currency translation loss of RM76.8 million on foreign currency denominated borrowings, the underlying pre-tax profit of RM280.1 million for this quarter is 20% lower than the underlying pre-tax profit of RM349.1 million for Q4 FY2014 which is due mainly to lower plantation profit as mentioned.

Meanwhile, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) recorded an operating profit of RM220.7 million in its Q4 FY2015 which is 41% higher than Q4 FY2014. Its revenue also went up 47% to RM614.3 million in this current quarter.

Q4 Earnings for IOIC and IOIPGIOI

Property development recorded higher sales from its Trilinq development in Singapore as well as the recently-launched projects of IOI Palm City in Xiamen, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) which received overwhelming response with advanced progress works, while property investment saw higher contribution from the retail segment. In addition, IOIPG has recognised total fair value gain of RM138.3 million on investment properties which is mainly derived from IOI City Mall. Leisure and hospitality’s revenue for this quarter is consistent with Q4 FY2014. However, its operating profit is RM7.4 million lower than Q4 FY2014 with the decrease attributed to other operations whereby lower income was registered from the provision of management services to joint-venture projects.

Going forward, IOIC and IOIPG expect to perform satisfactorily for the remaining financial period of 2015.

TAN SRI DATO’ LEE CONFERRED LEADERSHIP AWARD

On 7 September 2015, IOI Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng was conferred the prestigious Palm

Oil Industry Leadership Award (PILA) 2015 by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) for his contribution to the development of palm oil industry in the country. The conferment recognised Tan Sri’s leadership efforts and qualities in steering IOI Group to become a global integrated palm oil player.

Tan Sri received the award from Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the award dinner held at InterContinental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The event was attended by various plantation luminaries.

The guests were shown a brief video clip depicting the rise of Tan Sri from humble beginnings to the successful businessman of today through sheer hard work and diligence. His philanthropic nature led to him donating the RM50,000 which came with the award to the Malaysian Palm Oil Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Congratulations to Tan Sri!

In line with its corporate responsibility aspiration, IOI Group joined the Malaysian Collective Impact Initiatives (MCII) along

with several other private companies, non-profit organisations and government agencies to collectively drive positive change in the community at large. The inaugural meeting involving representatives from said collaborators took place in August this year.

MCII was established with the objective of improving education in Malaysia and encouraging community engagement, social activities, nutrition and employment assistance which contribute towards ensuring children successfully progress through their education and into gainful employment. It connects these collaborating organisations from different sectors and brings them together to agree to solve a specific social problem using a common agenda, aligning their efforts, and using common measures of success.

As a start, school retention and youth unemployment in Klang have been identified as the two main focus areas of MCII. A backbone organisation has subsequently been formed in September to lead

this initiative. Meanwhile, MCII is in the process of identifying and appointing suitable Social Purpose Organisations (SPOs) – organisations that operate with the primary aim of achieving measurable social and environmental impact – to develop and implement projects that are able to tackle the identified social problems.

Collective impact is a framework to tackle deeply entrenched and complex social problems. It is an innovative and structured approach to making collaboration work across government, business, philanthropy, non-profit organisations and citizens to achieve significant and lasting social change. The concept was first written by John Kania and Mark Kramer in the “Stanford Social Innovation Review” which was published in 2011.

IOI Group looks forward to playing a meaningful social transformative role in MCII as it moves to make collective impact where it matters most – our country.

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

BERITAIOI 09

On 16 June 2015, the IOI Core Values’ video was launched in an email from Senior Manager (Group Human Resource) Ms Stefanie Lau to all employees. An exclusive “Watch & Win” contest was announced simultaneously to encourage employees from Corporate, Property and Plantation divisions to preview the video and answer three simple questions. Seven lucky winners were system-picked to receive token prizes (each received a Sony powerbank and F&B voucher to dine at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel) from IOI Corporation Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor.

Connecting our Core Values is a shared responsibility. As IOI employees, we need to ensure that we are able to demonstrate these behaviours. It is true to say that humans are social beings and we learn by observing others; therefore, it is important for us in IOI to embrace the values and be a role model for others.

Graduate TRAINEE Programme

The Graduate Trainee Programme in IOI Group is an accelerated programme designed to attract, identify and

nurture high potential young talents who are ready to fill future executive positions. It is akin to a cradle that cultivates talents to take up career challenges within IOI Group and to share the company’s passion in shaping its pillars of strengths.

In July, five Graduate Trainees were selected to enrol in the programme based on their excellent academic achievement and assessment on behavioural competencies as well as level of creativity and innovativeness.

They are currently undergoing their first job rotation at IOI Properties Group Berhad’s Sales & Marketing and Project departments for six months. They will utilise the remaining three months in rotation to other business units which are related to their core department.

The IOI Core Values represent a set of standards comprising values and behaviours which governs our daily work-life at IOI Group. The

IOI Core Values define the way we think, work and act to ensure we are committed to embedding the values into our business in the right manner. These values are incorporated in the company’s “Code of Business Conduct & Ethics”.

The seven IOI Core Values were documented in a video to reinforce these values to all employees; ensuring they understand the requirements set forth in each core value and commit to it with complete confidence. The video also enables new employees to get a first-hand introduction to IOI Group’s culture, underpinned by its Core Values.

SENSES in the Dark

The Dialogue in the Dark (DiD) is premised on a simple concept – visitors are led by visually-impared guides through specially-

designed darkened rooms where the daily routines take on a new dimension. Since 1988, DiD has been presented in more than 38 countries and 170 cities to more than seven million visitors around the world.

Two half-day experiential learning workshops were held on 3 September 2015 in the DiD Experiential Centre in Sunway University. Each workshop comprised 19 participants from the Plantation, Property and Corporate divisions. Participants spent three hours in the dark going through a series of team challenges, assisted by visually-impaired DiD trainers. These challenges created a range of unpredictable situations similar to many business landscapes.

Participants faced the experience of temporarily losing their most dominant sense – their sight, which resulted in a dramatic slowdown in their activity and movement. Since it is not possible to use their visual sense, the participants have to rely on new resources, instincts and unused potential to reach a set goal. The workshops conducted in complete darkness essentially tested the participants’ limits, leading to a tangible experience of combining one’s emotional and social competence as they were challenged to solving tasks within groups.

The DiD trainers were capable of bringing participants to an inspiring learning atmosphere of authenticity, empathy and openness – thus enhancing human interaction and mutual understanding. This iexperience brings about dramatic insights for professional leaders in their everyday routines. This remains true to famous philosopher Martin Buber’s adage, “The only way to learn is through encounter.”

Overall, it has been a unique opportunity of experiential discovery and exploring beyond sight!

This July, Acidchem International Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of IOI Oleochemical Industries Berhad (IOI Oleo), successfully

recorded its first production and shipment of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Segregated (SG) fatty acids. The first batch of RSPO SG fatty acids was made possible as a result of commitment and cooperation between Marketing and Production teams to fulfil the needs of its customer in Denmark.

Meticulous planning from raw material sourcing, production and shipment was needed to comply with the stringent requirement of SG fatty acids that did not allow for mixing of either feedstock or products with non-RSPO-certified material.

The supply chain began from obtaining SG crude palm oil from IOI Group’s Pamol Kluang Estate that was refined in IOI Pan-Century Edible Oils Sdn Bhd before being transported to Penang.

Earlier on, Acidchem International has obtained the Supply Chain Certification System (SCCS) certification and started supplying only RSPO Mass Balance (MB) fatty acids to customers since 2012. With this achievement, it is well on track to support its customers’ sustainable aspirations.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL Oleochemical Industries Berhad (IOI Oleo) invests in enhancing the skill sets of its

FOR COMMUNITY WELFARE

1 August: Visit to Sekolah Tamil Prai, Penang

The national examination for primary school students in Malaysia, Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), is an important stepping stone to secondary school. IOI Oleo arranged a half-day course on “Techniques in Answering UPSR Examination Papers” for 45 students. Conducted by Mr Justin Jeevaprakash, the established speaker, who is also a teacher, gave valuable tips on acing the examination using logical thought and critical thinking.

5 August: Donation to a Charitable Association

8 August: Jamuan Hari Raya

The CS volunteers organised a “Jamuan Hari Raya” for 150 children at the Rumah Kanak-Kanak Taman Bakti, Kepala Batas. The children had fun singing festive songs during a karaoke session and prizes were given to those plucky enough to go on stage. The day ended with a sumptuous Hari Raya feast for the children and caregivers.

Oleochemical Industries Berhad (IOI Oleo) instils a sense of corporate practice in “giving back to the community” among its employees with various community service efforts carried

out by the Community Service (CS) volunteers.

In addition, the CS volunteers rewarded 10 ex-students of Sekolah Tamil Prai with a new bag and certificate in recognition of their achievement in the 2014 UPSR examination. They had previously attended the motivational talk last year. It was heartening for the team to see these students benefiting from the talk.

The school also received 100 books donated by IOI Oleo employees during a month-long book donation drive. This initiative hoped to cultivate a reading habit among the students and encourage them to read to widen their knowledge.

IOI Oleo lent a helping hand to the less fortunate in Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh by handing over essential items to the association which houses 60 disabled and mentally-challenged residents ranging from three to 50 years old.

The contribution was made possible thanks to the generous collection raised from the IOI Oleo staff totalling RM3,000 in cash and daily provisions such as food, beverages, rice and toiletries. IOI Oleo Executive Director Mr Tan Kean Hua presented the items together with CS volunteers to the association.

On 17 September 2015, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC)

announced that it had successfully obtained the

International Sustainability & Carbon Certification

(ISCC) for its sustainable shea supply chain after two years

of extensive cooperation with ISCC and certification body,

SGS Germany. It is the first vegetable oils and fats company

to obtain this certification.

“A new milestone in our journey towards a sustainable and

transparent supply chain; this third party certification is the

ultimate result of all the effort we have put into sustainable

shea practices in recent years. We are supporting the

construction of warehouses in Ghana to improve the

earnings of women collecting shea from wild growing trees.

We are also one of the pioneers of the Global Shea Alliance

and actively participate in their sustainability programme.

Prior assessments performed by Rainforest Alliance found

no major sustainability hotspots in our West African shea

supply chain,” said IOILC Supply Chain Manager Africa Mr

Joost van Ginneken.

Shea trees grow only in Africa, in a belt stretching from

Sudan to Senegal. Shea trees are not cultivated but only

grow wild. Only the shea that is not locally used is sold. The

shea fruits fall from the tree when ripe and are collected

and dried by local women in small savannah villages.

Millions of people in West Africa, especially in rural areas,

depend on shea for their livelihood. Shea is most commonly

used in cosmetics and food manufacturing and, to a lesser

extent, a fraction derivative is partly used in bioenergy. IOILC

has been producing shea and its applications for over 50 years.

ISCC System Manager Ms Juliane Pohl said: “For this first

certification of a shea supply chain, all existing requirements

of the ISCC System have been implemented. Together with

SGS and IOILC, the specific factors were discussed and taken

into account.

For example, there is no land use change for shea. The

traceability through the supply chain is ensured and social

aspects have been discussed with non-governmental

organisations. We are happy that IOILC has chosen ISCC to

prove the sustainability of its shea supply chain.”

“During the audits in West Africa, I was able to verify that

the shea nuts from the supplier network of IOILC are

collected from wild growing shea trees. Collecting shea

nuts has been deeply anchored in the traditional lifestyle of

female villagers for centuries. Selling the nuts which are not

consumed domestically to companies like IOILC is a welcome

opportunity for them to earn some extra money,” according to

SGS Germany Business Development Manager Sustainability

Mr Sven Theml.

On 16 October 2015, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) Europe celebrated the 10th anniversary of a momentous milestone –

the first delivery of oil from Rotterdam refinery in the Netherlands a decade ago!

Since the start of production, the Rotterdam refinery has been instrumental in building the leading position of IOILC on the European palm oil market. The facility delivers a wide range of products to the market, ranging from straight palm oil to enzymatically-processed hard stocks for the margarine industry. The latter was made possible after an extension to the refinery in 2010.

Combined with products from the Wormerveer plant, IOILC is able to deliver the most complete range of palm-based products to the European industry.

The refinery is as much the state-of-the-art facility that it was on the opening day, thanks to continuous upgrades implemented over the years. Till today, it remains the largest palm oil refinery in Europe.

Highly appreciated by its customers for the efficient delivery of high quality products, this refinery is instrumental to the continued growth of IOILC for more decades to come.

Then: A state-of-art facility in the making.

During the Global Meeting 2014 in Wormerveer, the Netherlands, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) Americas was announced as the

test site to develop and implement a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) pipeline management system that will eventually be adopted by all companies.

A CRM team was subsequently created to include members from the sales, marketing, information technology (IT), and research and development (R&D) departments to collaborate on executing a plan for the new CRM pipeline management system. The team was headed by Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mr Tim Surin with Ms Jamie Zubcic as the project manager.

The CRM scope was proposed to several companies where it was unanimously decided that the Microsoft Dynamics system was the best match. The CRM team worked closely with a firm in the Netherlands to create and carry out a system that would manage and communicate new business opportunities seamlessly between sales managers and R&D teams.

The new Microsoft Dynamics CRM went live year in July, and kicked off an intense week-long training that included the ICT solutions provider CTAC from the Netherlands, Mr Jeroen Beelen and Mr Marinjo VanHappen, and the sales, marketing and R&D teams from IOILC Americas.

Promoting Palm Oil as the HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE

On 18 September 2015, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) participated as one of the 11 speakers invited by the Malaysian Palm Oil

Council (MPOC) who hosted more than 200 guests during the MPOC Networking Seminar in Warsaw, Poland. The speakers kept the audience updated on the latest palm oil-related developments.

IOILC Sales Manager Confectionery Mr Marcin Troniarz delivered an energetic presentation on the benefits of palm oil in replacing unhealthy fats in our diet. Trans fats are still present in many food products in the East and Central Europe markets. These fats have a negative influence on our health; strongly correlating with the occurrence of coronary heart disease. However, trans fats are popular because of its processing performance.

During his presentation, Mr Troniarz showed the audience that palm oil is the perfect solution to remove trans fats from products as it is able to deliver a similar processing performance, without the downside. Based on the questions and enthusiastic response from the audience, IOILC has taken yet another step in improving the nutritional profile of food products in East and Central Europe and leads the way in the removal of trans fats.

Following the announcement from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) –

the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods – are not “generally recognised as safe” (GRAS) for use in human food, this year’s IFT (Institute of Food Technologists) Annual Meeting & Food Expo focused on PHO removal from 11 to 14 July 2015 in Illinois. IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) Americas constructed its overall set-up to convey that IOILC is the best company to partner with on this topic. With over 10 years’ of experience in offering PHO removal and solutions to its customers, IOILC is the PHO replacement expert. Its concept was portrayed by showing a wide range of applications for which IOILC has the solutions using the versatile palm oil.

This year, the IOILC booth mimicked the look and feel of a local coffee shop. The space had a rustic feel with wooden counters and a brick wall separating the order area from the VIP lounge where customer meetings were held. The goal was to have people spending more time in the booth amid a relaxed environment. These samples were offered to the visitors: trans-free cake pops featuring SansTrans™ Cake and Freedom 857, trans-free mini donuts featuring SansTrans™ Donut Fry P, trans-free coffee creamers featuring SansTrans™ 35 and trans-free morning glory muffins featuring Durkex™ NT 100.

With these, the objectives for IFT15 were to:• Educatenon-customers,customersandindustry

leaders about IOILC’S PHO-free solutions.• Engageinhigh-qualityinteractionswhichcouldbe

translated into lead generation.• Encourageengagementbydisplayingawiderangeof

ideas. • Conductpurposefulandmeaningfulbusinessmeetings

during the show.

The “No PHO Café” booth proved to be a big hit – it emerged as one of the top 35 Standout Exhibits and was ranked 99.4% among all exhibitors totaling 183 booths. In its category, it scored 100% out of the 13 booths evaluated.

HOLIDAY TO THAILAND!

On 29 August 2015, 80 members of Kelab Keluarga IOI (KKIOI) departed for a trip to Dannok and Hatyai in Thailand. They

arrived in Dannok, a small town bordering Malaysia and Thailand in Songkhla Province, ferried by two chartered buses after an overnight journey from Klang Valley. The KKIOI members, some with family in tow, excitedly toured the Dannok Panda Garden where adults and children alike happily took photos of the adorable panda replicas. Next, they visited “Dinosaur Park”, a family-friendly park with life-like replicas and lots of information on pre-historic predators like T-Rex.

They also stopped by the many parks located in the same area such as “Rabbit Garden”, “Pig Village” and “18 Lohan”. The children fed horses and saw peacocks and ostriches at the mini zoo too. During lunchtime, the group enjoyed a sumptuous meal of traditional Thai food at the Waterview Restaurant overlooking a magnificent view of the river. Interestingly, the food was sent over to the tables (in huts built atop the river) via motor boats!

On the second day, KKIOI members visited Samila Beach and had an array of seafood for lunch. Some made a beeline to the famous Golden Mermaid statue to take photos with their family and colleagues, while others relaxed under the sun and sea breeze.

Another highlight of the trip was the visit to Klong Hae Floating Market where everyone got a chance to explore the unique trading place by the local people who use waterway transportation. These vendors in wooden rickety boats (also known as “sampans”) are moored along the Khlong Hae canal. KKIOI members were seen excitedly bargain-hunting for fresh food and souvenirs. Amidst the din and chatter, it was a great shopping and dining experience for all!
