Manchester United supporters have flown a banner over Anfield,

taunting Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

And their prediction ultimately came true; the Reds missing out on the

title as Manchester City were crowned champions.

SECTION 2 - DEBATE OF THE WEEK

Manchester City are Worthy Premier League Champions,

Liverpool are not. Do you agree?

Give us your Opinion

With Manchester City now confirmed as the 2014 Premier

League champions, Adam Bate pinpoints exactly how

Manuel Pellegrini's side did it. It's been a remarkable

campaign by all accounts but Pellegrini's men have

proven more than worthy winners. Here's why:

Spectacular spine : Title-winning teams tend to have a

strong spine and City have that right through the centre

of the side in the shape of Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero. Although Manuel

Pellegrini only started those four players on seven occasions in the Premier League this season, it is telling

that City won all of those matches - scoring 23 goals in the process.

Coping without key men : As indicated by how rarely Pellegrini fielded the much-vaunted spine of his

team, a feature of the campaign was how well the team fared in the absence of their star names. When

Aguero was injured over the Christmas period, City won all six of their Premier League matches. In the 10

games Kompany was unavailable for, the team managed six clean sheets.

In addition, City are unbeaten in the league without Toure in the starting line-up and powered over the line

despite David Silva's absence at the most tense stage of the season. It speaks volumes for the strength in

depth at the club and, ultimately, that proved a key differential between City and their rivals.

Not-so-weak links: That squad depth is illustrated by the key contributions from less heralded members

of the group. Edin Dzeko is still to win over some of his critics but a tally of 26 goals in all competitions has

included that first-minute strike at Old Trafford and vital goals to help see off Crystal Palace, Everton and

Aston Villa when there was no room for a slip up.

Goals from everywhere: While more than half of Liverpool's league goals came courtesy of strike duo

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, City were able to rely upon a greater variety of sources. Indeed, Toure

finishes the Premier League campaign as the club's top scorer with 20 goals, three clear of star striker

Aguero with Dzeko not far behind with 16 of his own. Beyond that there were three from Kompany, four

from Jesus Navas, five from Fernandinho, and seven from both David Silva and Samir Nasri.

Different ways to win: Seven against Norwich plus six against both Arsenal and Tottenham, City handed

out some beatings this season. There were a couple more five-goal hauls and six further occasions in which

they scored four. But Pellegrini's team also showed an ability to grind out victories when things weren't

looking so fluid in attack too.

News in the Highlights

Manchester City win title as Norwich's relegation is confirmed

Manchester City wrapped up a second Premier League title in three seasons after beating West Ham United

after Liverpool's come-from-behind win over Newcastle United proved to be in vain.

Norwich City's relegation from the top flight was confirmed after a home defeat by fourth-placed Arsenal,

while Tottenham Hotspur booked Europa League football for next season by beating Aston Villa.

Ryan Giggs' likely last game as Manchester United manager ended in a draw at Southampton, as FA Cup

finalists Hull City were beaten at home by Everton.

Bottom club Cardiff City bowed out of the Premier League with a home defeat by Chelsea as fellow

relegated side Fulham twice came from behind to draw with Crystal Palace.

Stoke City recorded their highest Premier League finish with a win at out-of-form West Bromwich Albion

and Sunderland's recent flying run was checked by Swansea City.

Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany scored the goals as Manchester City beat West Ham 2-0 at the Etihad

Stadium to claim the title by two points.

Liverpool came from behind to round off their excellent season with a 2-1 home win over Newcastle, who

finished the match with nine men.

News in the Highlights Huge drama as Spanish title race goes to final day

The Spanish Liga title race will come down to the final day of the season after Atletico Madrid were held to a

1-1 draw by Malaga.

Diego Simeone’s side missed the chance to

win their first La Liga title since 1996, with

Barcelona also being held to a draw at

Elche, with Atleti lacking a cutting edge

with Diego Costa missing from the squad.

After Real Madrid lost to Celta Vigo it is

now a two-horse race heading into the

final round of games. Just three points

now separate Atletico and Barca ahead of

the game at the Camp Nou next week and

if Barca win at home, they take the title on head-to-head record. Any other results gives Atleti the title.

Malaga shocked the Vicente Calderon crowd when Samuel Garcia took advantage of a defensive mix up

between Juanfran, Toby Alderweireld and Thibaut Courtois to head into the empty net and give his team

the lead.

But Atletico netted an equaliser with little over 15 minutes left, Alderweireld heading into the bottom

corner of Cabaellero’s net having found a yard of space from a corner kick.

Atleti piled forward in search of a winner, with Marcos Angeleri shown a second yellow for a reckless

challenge. Adrian Lopez came agonizingly close to beating Willy Caballero in stoppage time, but the Malaga

keeper tipped his effort round the post to deny Atletico a historic result.

Ancelotti frustrated by end of Real title challenge

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti believes his side have paid for their efforts in the Champions League after

their La Liga title challenge ended with a 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Ancelotti's men have taken just two points from their last three league games after a stunning 4-0 thrashing

of reigning European champions Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League final later this month.

And the Italian admitted that his players may have had one eye on their clash with La Liga leaders Atletico

Madrid in Lisbon on May 24. Ancelotti was particularly displeased with the manner in which Real conceded

two goals to Brazilian striker Charles as he latched onto errors from Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso.

"We gifted them two goals. Afterwards we tried to score and have control of the play, but we had a lot of

players out and it had been difficult to prepare for the game.”

Take a quick look

This page contains the main weekly headlines related to this week’s La Liga main

news; you can read all full articles by clicking on the related titles.

Luiz to complete Barca move

Catalan newspaper Sport suggest that defender has agreed to sign for the Catalan giants, with Chelsea

happy to let him leave for €40m.

The move however, won’t happen until after this summer’s tournament, with the centre-back representing

the hosts.

It is just one of a number of signings the Camp Nou outfit are set to make, with goalkeeper Marc Andre ter

Stegen and Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte both thought to be coming in..

Awful Real Madrid fall out of title contention

A double from Charles helped Celta Vigo to a 2-0 win against Real Madrid, who fielded a hopelessly

weakened team in the mistaken belief they could no longer win the title.

Real, who at the start of the match were trailing leaders Atletico Madrid by four points and second-placed

Barcelona by one, sent out a host of B-team players, leaving out the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale

and Karim Benzema, with both eyes fixed on the Champions League final.

Villarreal rout Rayo in home finale

With a Europa league berth already secured, Villarreal rolled to a 4-0 win over 10-man Rayo Vallecano in

their last home game of the La Liga season on Saturday.

Villarreal are in seventh place, two points behind Sociedad. If Villarreal finish above Sociedad, they will

avoid a play-off to reach the Europa League group phase.

Also, Levante beat Valencia 2-0 to sit one round away from finishing above their city rivals for the first time.

Mateu will referee Barcelona-Atlético Valencian referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz is set to take charge of the

game between Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid in the final match

of the season at the Camp Nou ,a match which could decide who

wins La Liga.

On Monday, the Designation Committee for Professional Football

comprising Vitoriano Sanchez Arminio, President of the Refereeing

Technical Committee (CTA), and former referees López Nieto and Puentes Leira will officially announce the

designated match officials for the thirty-eighth game of the Primera División. Barring a last minute change,

the international referee is the first-choice.

Lionel Messi plays down move away from Barcelona

Media speculation in Spain has linked the Argentina striker with a move away from Nou Camp - where he

has won six La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies - in the summer amid apparent concerns

over his happiness.

Yet, conversely, it has also been suggested Messi could soon sign a new bumper contract that would tie him

to the Catalan giants until 2019.

News in the Highlights

Chievo condemn trio, Juve set points record

Chievo secured Serie A safety as Catania, Bologna and Livorno were condemned to relegation and Juventus

set a new points record. Dario Dainelli's 72nd-minute strike earned Chievo a 1-0 win over Cagliari and kept

Eugenio Corini's men in the Italian top flight after a run of three straight defeats had brought them to the

brink of the drop zone.

With just one game to go, the bottom three sides now have an insurmountable gap to close and will all play

in the second tier next term. But it was a day of celebration for champions Juventus, who beat Roma 1-0 to

reach 99 points, surpassing Inter's previous record of 97.

Antonio Conte's men left it late, substitute and former Stadio Olimpico favourite Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

scoring his first Serie A goal of the season four minutes into stoppage time to ruin Roma's unbeaten home

record this term. There was controversy, too, as Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini appeared to elbow Miralem

Pjanic, though referee Carmine Russo did not take any action.

If the authorities decide to look at the incident and find Chiellini guilty, he could fall foul of national coach

Cesare Prandelli's rule of not picking players who have suffered disciplinary issues, therefore throwing his

FIFA World Cup dreams into disarray.

At the other end of the table, Catania scuppered Bologna's survival chances as both sides were demoted

following a 2-1 win for the visitors.

Napoli produced one of the performances of the day by putting five past Sampdoria. Duvan Zapata,

Lorenzo Insigne, Jose Callejon and Marek Hamsik were all on target, with Shkodran Mustafi's own goal

adding to Sampdoria's woe in a 5-2 loss.

Shocking scenes as knife thrown onto pitch in Milan clash

Milan midfielder Kevin Constant was the target of racist

abuse, with a banana being thrown at the Guinean

midfielder – an incident similar to what happened to

Barcelona’s Dani Alves against Villarreal earlier this season.

But in astonishing scenes, as Constant handed the banana to

the referee, a knife could be seen sticking into the turf, just

yards from where the players and officials were standing.

Following the match, the two managers reacted to the drama that brought Italian football culture into the

spotlight once more.

"I can only compliment my players who continued to play and got on with their jobs. Hopefully, they will

find the culprit and do what has to be done,” Milan boss Clarence Seedorf said. Atalanta coach Stefano

Colantuono was shocked by the section of his side’s fans, insisting that they “ruined” the match. "The

incident doesn't deserve any comments, it ruined a great afternoon,” he said.

news; you can read all full articles by clicking on the related titles.

Badu hits late equaliser to dent Verona's Europa hopes

Ghanaian substitute Emmanuel Badu hit an injury-time equaliser for Udinese in a 2-2 draw at Verona on

Saturday to potentially scupper the home side's chances of Europa League qualification.

Verona, one of six teams chasing two of Serie A's three places in the competition, had provisionally sneaked

into the Europa zone after goals by Luca Toni, from the spot, and Emil Hallfredsson had given them a 2-1

lead by the 54th minute.

Serie A trio relegated as Europa fight goes to wire

Catania, Bologna and Livorno were relegated from Italy's Serie A while the battle for the league's last

remaining Europa League spot will go to the wire after Torino were held 1-1 by Parma on Sunday.

PSG’s Alex to join AC Milan According to French TV station TF1, PSG centre back Alex has agreed in principle to join AC Milan at the end

of the season.

Alex, 31, was expected to sign a contract extension with PSG with his deal running out at the end of the

season, but teammate Thiago Silva has since convinced him otherwise.

Alex is expected to join the Serie A side on a one plus one year deal. Get French Football News is unable to

confirm these reports at present.

Strootman Excited About Roma Future

AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is pleased with his recovery from knee surgery.

The setback ended Strootman's season and his World Cup hopes with Holland.

“Every day I feel a little better. I’m working hard in the gym and the knee is doing well,” Strootman told

Roma Channel.

Serie A managers condemn Atalanta supporters' alleged racism

The managers of Atalanta and AC Milan have condemned the actions of supporters who allegedly threw a

banana at Rossoneri defender Kevin Constant during Sunday's Serie A match in Bergamo.

Milan's France-born Guinea international was seen showing a banana to officials at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri

d'Italia towards the end of a game the visiting side went on to lose 2-1.

Barcelona full-back Dani Alves picked up and ate a banana thrown at him by Villarreal supporters during last

month's Primera Division meeting at El Madrigal.

Villarreal were subsequently fined 12,000 Euros by the Spanish Football Federation.

Inter 'to retire Javier Zanetti shirt'

Javier Zanetti played his last game at San Siro on Saturday, as the Nerazzurri overcame Lazio 4-1 to secure

European qualification.

And Corriere dello Sport claim that the club will make that number unavailable to other squad members as

a sign of respect to the Argentine.

News in the Highlights Beer we go. Pep Guardiola dowsed as Bayern celebrate Bundesliga title

The atmosphere could have fallen a little flat after the Champions League setback against Real Madrid, but

it did not stop a capacity 71,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena celebrating Bayern Munich's 24th Bundesliga

title in traditional style Saturday.

A last-gasp winner from Claudio Pizarro ensured the final league game of the season would result in a 1-0

win over Stuttgart and the cue for the party to start.

Manager Pep Guardiola was dowsed with the best Bavarian beer as has become the custom, with defenders

Jerome Boateng and Daniel van Buyten the main protagonists. He scarcely seemed to mind as he lifted the

shield, reward for an all-conquering season which saw the championship wrapped up by March and with 29

wins, three draws and only two defeats.

Some have blamed the early clinching of the title for some lackluster performances which followed,

including the 5-0 semifinal aggregate reverse to Real which ended Bayern's hopes of defending the

Champions League crown.

The last league game was also a low-key affair on the pitch until Peru's Pizarro scored from outside the

penalty area in the 92nd minute.

Guardiola, whose future at Bayern has been the subject of some speculation, looked a relieved man after it

went in, but he will be hoping his team can raise themselves for one final big performance next week.

They face arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup final in Berlin, hoping to complete the domestic

double before many of their squad head to Brazil for the World Cup finals.

Bayern may have to do so without key midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who limped off in the first half

with a knee injury. He will undergo an MRI scan Monday to determine the seriousness, worrying for his club

side and Germany.

"Bastian has a problem with his kneecap," Guardiola told the official Bayern website. "But we still have six

days to go until the cup final." Guardiola also reflected on his team's achievements in his first season in

charge. "The first championship is very special for a Catalan such as myself," he said."

Leverkusen sign Swiss striker Drmic from Nuremberg

Talented Swiss international forward Josip Drmic has joined Bayer Leverkusen from Nuremberg on a five-

year deal as the Bundesliga club steel themselves for next season's Champions League.

several top German and European clubs' wish list after a stunning individual season.

Paderborn promoted to Bundesliga, Fuerth into play-off Modest SC Paderborn were promoted to the top tier of the German Bundesliga for the first time on Sunday

as Greuther Fuerth were forced to settle for a play-off place.

day of the season to clinch second place behind champions Cologne, an excellent second half to the

campaign seeing them finish two points clear of Fuerth.

Lewandowski tops chart on final game for Dormund

Lewandowski's 20 goals was more than any other in the league and he picks up the prestigious gong after

his final league game before his move to Bayern. The Polish striker scored a double with Milos Jojic and

Henrikh Mkhitaryan also on the scoresheet.

Lewandowski - in his final game for the club - opened the scoring after 43 minutes in the Olympic Stadium,

slotting home with ease after Mats Hummels' assist.

Stevens quits as Stuttgart coach

Dutch coach Huub Stevens quit as Stuttgart boss on Saturday having succeeded in his mission of saving the

2007 Bundesliga champions from relegation.

"I am leaving for personal reasons and above all I need a holiday," said the 60-year-old after his side ended

their league campaign with a 1-0 defeat at champions Bayern Munich.

Wolfsburg impress in their entertaining victory over Gladbach

Both sides went into this game with hopes of getting the last Champions League spot but in the end it

wasn't to be as Leverkusen managed to defeat Werder Bremen. Wolfsburg were determined to finish the

season in style and they didn't disappoint in a thoroughly entertaining clash.

Bundesliga clubs set to empty their pockets

Bundesliga clubs have been sorting deals with players before the opening of the transfer window for years

now, in an attempt to have their squads prepared earlier than their rivals. It’s likely that we’ll see some of

the biggest spending in the Bundesliga’s recent history this off-season, also. So who will be emptying their

pockets? (Click on the Title to find out)

News in the Highlights

PSG crush Lille to break Ligue 1 points record Champions Paris Saint Germain achieved a new Ligue 1 points record on Saturday with a 3-1 win over 10-man Lille to ensure the race for Europe in France goes down to the wire. Laurent Blanc's side now have 86 points to overtake Lyon's all-time record of 84 in 2006, in a tie which was overshadowed by PSG's France midfielder Yohan Cabaye suffering a right ankle injury. European places will now be allocated on the final day of the season next Saturday with Champions League and Europa League berths still up for grabs.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic voted French football's player of the year

PARIS Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain was named France's players' player of the

year for the second season running on Sunday.

With a game of the season still to go, Swedish striker Ibrahimovic is the French top flight's leading scorer with 25

goals and has netted 40 in all competitions, beating the all-time club record of 39, set by the Argentine Carlos

Bianchi in 1978.

Another PSG player, Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, was named Ligue 1's young player of the year, while the

coach of the year gong went to Rene Girard of Lille.

Blanc Agrees New PSG Deal

The 48-year-old guided PSG to their second successive French title after taking over as boss last year and was

offered a one-year extension to his contract which was due to expire in June 2015, though he insisted that he

would wait until the season was over before considering any offer. The former French defender also guided his

side to French League Cup glory as they beat Lyon 2-1 last month.

Christophe Galtier quiet on Premier League links

St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier insists he can't say much about his future after being linked with a move to

the Premier League.

French daily L'Equipe claims that both Newcastle United and Aston Villa have expressed an interest in the 47-

year-old.

Galtier is highly rated on the other side of the Channel, and has taken St Etienne close to UEFA Champions

League qualification in France although they look set to just miss out to Lille on third place.

Newcastle-target Cabella set to quit Montpellier

Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella, who had been targetted by English Premier League side Newcastle this

season, announced Saturday that he will quit the Ligue 1 side at the end of the season.

Cabella had been touted for a move to St James' Park in January following Yohan Cabaye's departure to Paris

Saint-Germain but a bid was rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

Ligue 1 club Nice announce Barcelona friendly

French Ligue 1 club Nice on Saturday announced that they will host Spanish giants Barcelona in a friendly at

their Allianz Riviera stadium on Saturday, August 2.

The match will be played less than three weeks after the end of the World Cup, in which a host of Barcelona

players will feature.

The Allianz Riviera, opened last September, will be one of the venues for the 2016 European Championship,

which France will host.
