Last year’s pain could be this year’s gain for the Toledo Rockets. In 2007, Toledo suffered through a number of key injuries, especially on defense. The Rockets were forced to put a lot of young players on the field, one of the factors that contributed to a 5-7 record. The good news is that four of the injured players—senior free safety Tyrrell Herbert, senior defensive end Sean Williamson, sophomore defensive end Doug Westbrook and redshirt freshman offensive tackle Jan Gewont—received medical hardship redshirts and are expected back in the lineup next fall. Sophomore linebacker Archie Donald also is back after sitting out last year. “We are adding players back into our defense that are in the all-confer-ence category,” said head coach Tom Amstutz. “It hurt us last season having these guys out, but for this season it gives our defense a lot of depth. It al-lowed our younger players to get play-ing time and mature.” That could be good news for a Rocket defense that ranked 12th in the Mid-American Conference in to-tal defense in 2007, allowing 444 yards and a league-worst 39.2 points per game. Of particular concern was the lack of pressure on the quarterback. Toledo ranked last in the MAC with just nine sacks. “Our goal is to have great improvement on our de-fense,” said Amstutz. “We have to put much more pres-sure on the quarterback, to get more sacks and tackles for losses.” The Rockets look to get better on the offensive side of the ball, too. Junior quarterback Aaron Opelt is back for his third season as the starter, as are a pair of All-MAC wide receivers, Stephen Williams and Nick Moore. The running game looks to be in the capable hands of junior DaJuane Collins, who ran for 636 yards on 6.4 yards per carry as a backup in 2007.

2008 University of Toledo Football Outlook

Returning Players Make 2008 Rockets a Deeper and More Experienced Team

-continued next page-

The following is an overview of the Rockets heading into 2008 spring practice:

Offense The UT marketing department’s slogan for the 2008 football season is “There’s Excitement in the Air” and it’s no wonder. With two return-ing All-MAC receivers and a veteran quarterback in place, the Rockets should be flinging the pigskin around with regularity in the Glass Bowl next fall. And why not? Last season, Ste-phen Williams and Nick Moore both had break-out seasons, becoming the first tandem of All-MAC receivers in Rocket history. Both are tall, fleet-footed receivers with good hands and the ability to make tough catches in traffic. Williams ranked seventh in the MAC with 73 receptions and was third in receiving yards with 1,169. Moore was eighth in the league with

60 catches. “I would say they are the most talented pair of re-ceivers we’ve ever had since I’ve been head coach,” said Amstutz. “We expect a lot out of them. Stephen Williams is a big-play receiver. He came into his own last year. We expect him to be a big part of our offense next year. Nick Moore is a senior and will be the leader of the receiver corps. He has excellent hands, and he’s really developing as a special receiver.” Expected to line up at tight end is senior John Allen, who has caught 41 passes in three seasons as a backup. Behind him in the depth chart are three players, one in each class: junior Tom Burzine, sophomore Matt Fought and redshirt freshman Danny Noble. The biggest key to the passing game may be the progress of junior quarterback Aaron Opelt. Opelt has

Stephen Williams had six games with at least 100 yards receiving in 2007.

2007 University of Toledo Football Outlook-continued from previous page-

started 15 games in his two-year career, completing 56.3 percent of his passes for 2,631 yards and 18 TDs. He was effective in 2007, but missed three full games and parts of two others with injuries. When he’s on, he is as explosive as any quarterback in the MAC, as evidenced by the Northern Illinois game last year in which he threw for 387 yards and four TDs. Amstutz thinks Opelt is ready to make his mark in 2008. “We feel that a quarterback really starts to mature in their junior year so we expect him to show what he can do this year,” said Amstutz. “This is his third year as a starter. He has a lot of passes under his belt. A lot will be expected of him this year.” The battle for the No. 2 po-sition behind Opelt will begin in earnest this spring. Fighting for that spot will be a pair of sophomores, D.J. Lenehan and junior college transfer Alex Pettee. Lenehan started three games as a true freshman in 2007, throwing for 630 yards and four touchdowns. Pettee threw for 2,196 yards and 21 TDs at Pierce (CA) Commu-nity College last year. Protecting the quarterbacks will be an offensive line that returns three starters but features no seniors. Junior left guard Jared DeWalt, junior center Buster Garrett and sophomore right guard Kevin Kowalski are back, but both the left and right tackle spots are up for grabs. Redshirt freshman Mike VanderMeulen and true freshman John Morookian will battle for the left tackle position. Morookian is a grayshirt who en-rolled in January and will participate in spring drills. Sophomore Chris Meenan and junior Shawn Glaser are listed 1-2 in the spring depth chart at right tackle. But redshirt freshman Jan Gewont, who missed all but the season opener last year due to injury, may lay claim to that position by next summer.

Despite losing first-team All-MAC selection Jalen Parmele to graduation, Toledo appears solid at running back. Junior DaJuane Collins was impressive in his backup role in 2007 and appears ready to assume the No. 1 spot this fall. Collins gained 636 yards on an impressive 6.4 yards per carry last year, twice rush-ing for more than 100 yards in a game. Also back is

sophomore Gordon Warner, who gained 130 yards with three scores as a true freshman last sea-son. “I think DaJuane is ready to take over at running back,” said Amstutz. “He’s a strong runner with great balance. He has shown the ability to make plays. Gor-don Warner has great quickness. He got a chance to play last year and we want him to build off that. (Freshman) Adonis Thomas was redshirted last year. We also ex-pect him to provide depth and make big plays with his quick-ness.”

Defense While Toledo took its lumps on defense last year, it also planted the seeds of what may turn out to be a major turnaround in 2008. The Rockets return 26 letterwin-ners on defense, including eight

starters from the 2007 lineup. Add in two-year starters Tyrrell Herbert and Sean Williamson, both of who missed last year due to injuries, and that number rises to 10. Moreover, Toledo is two- and even three-deep at just about every defensive position, which will hope-fully help protect the Rockets against the injury bug in 2008. The return of Williamson at defensive end should help a D-line that suffered from instability last year. Williamson has started 28 games in his career, and has 14.0 career tackles for loss. Also coming back from an injury redshirt season is sophomore defensive end Douglas Westbrook, who began last year as a starter before getting knocked out of the lineup.

DaJuane Collins rushed for 636 yards and seven TDs in 2007.

2007 University of Toledo Football Outlook

Other defensive ends on the depth chart include sophomore Alex Johnson (51 tackles in 2007); sopho-more Terrell Willis, a converted linebacker who had 13 tackles last season; sophomore Alberston Alexandre, a junior college transfer who had 15 sacks at Foothill (CA) Community College last year; and junior Matt Shumaker, who had nine tackles as a backup last sea-son. At defensive tackle, senior Alfred Martin, juniors Skylaar Constant and Maurice Hill, and sophomore Joe Underwood are all experienced. Constant led the group with 33 tackles in 2007. At linebacker, the Rockets have four players with significant experience to fill two positions. Senior Keith Forestal, a two-year starter, had 45 tackles in 2007. Ju-niors Derrick Summers (58 tackles) and Beau Brudz-inski (39 tackles) were also regulars in the rotation last year. But the key could be sophomore Archie Donald, who had 43 tackles as a true freshman in 2006 but sat out last year due to academic issues. Amstutz feels Donald could be a difference-maker in the middle. Toledo may be strongest at defensive back, where six new recruits join eight veterans who have at least some experience in the starting lineup. Leading the secondary are junior strong safety Barry Church and senior free safety Tyrrell Herbert. Church is a two-time first-team All-MAC player who has 163 tackles and seven interceptions over the past two seasons. Herbert, who missed all but the season opener in 2007 due to an injury, compiled 170 tackles and four interceptions in two seasons as a starter. “Church and Herbert are the leaders of the secondary and the leaders of the defense overall,” said Amstutz. “They are players we can count on to make big plays. They have good communication and a good relationship with each other that makes them a stronger force.” Other returners with starting experi-ence include junior rover Lester Rich-mond, who led the team with 97 tackles in 2007; junior cornerback Walter At-kins, who was fourth with 70 tackles and led the squad with seven pass breakups;

sophomore Myshan Pettis, who stepped in as a walk-on last year and racked up 41 tackles and tied with Church for a team-best three interceptions; sophomore corner-back Greg Harris (26 tackles in 2007); and sophomore strong safety Drey’Lon Pree (19 tackles, two intercep-tions). “We do have great depth and experience in our secondary, and we also think we have added some very strong freshmen coming in. Some of them could be in the playing rotation next season,” commented Amstutz.

Special Teams According to the NCAA record book, the best field-goal percentage for a career is 87.8 percent by Bobby Raymond of Florida (1983-84). That means that Rocket junior Alex Steigerwald has a chance to make history if he can keep up his current pace. Steigerwald is an amazing 20-of-21 (95.2) in his two seasons at UT. He was a perfect 13-of-13 in 2007. His last miss was a 36-yard attempt vs. Ball State on Nov. 14, 2006. While Steigerwald handles the field goals, sophomore Brett Brodbeck is expected take care of the kickoff duties. At punter, the loss of All-American Brett Kern to

graduation leaves the Rockets with big shoes to fill. Redshirt freshman Bill Claus has the job this spring, though he could face challengers for the position next August.

Coaching Staff The Rockets’ coaching staff will be making major changes for the 2008 season. Receivers coach Chris Hedden has been promoted to offensive coordina-tor, replacing John Shannon, who left to take the OC job at Marshall. Hedden will continue to coach the receivers.Former Liberty head coach Ken Karcher is the new quarterbacks coach, former Portland State defensive coordi-nator Greg Lupfer will coach the safeties and former Rocket player Vince Marrow will coach the tight ends.

Barry Church made first-team All-MAC in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Q& A With Tom AmstutzWhat are your thoughts about your team as you enter spring practice?

Amstutz: So far the ‘08 team has done everything we’ve asked them to do in winter conditioning. We had an ex-tra-hard push in weight training this winter. Our players want to play well. We are excited about the spring. It’s a new team with new opportunities.

Is there any sense of extra dedication to get the Rock-ets back to the top of the MAC?

Amstutz: We always ask the players to re-dedicate them-selves to a new season. We prepare the same way, whether it’s a championship year or a year where you struggled. It’s forgotten. Each year is its own new situation.

Will we see any significant changes this spring?

Amstutz: Spring is the time to look at new wrinkles, ex-periment with new schemes and evaluate your personnel. We plan to do that again this spring.

What are your expectations for junior quarterback Aaron Opelt?

Amstutz: We’re excited to have Aaron Opelt back out there and throwing again after his injury. We feel like he showed some spurts when he was healthy. Leading the team to 812 yards of total offense against Northern Illi-nois was an example of what he can do. This is his junior year. We feel that a quarterback really starts to mature in their junior year so we expect him to show what he can do this year. This is his third year as a starter. He has a lot of passes under his belt. A lot will be expected of him this year.

How do you see the battle shaping up for Opelt’s backup?

Amstutz: D.J. Lenehan got a chance to start several games as a freshman last year. He’s ahead of schedule as a quarterback. He really understands the offense. He’s a solid guy that we can trust to put in there. Alex Pettee had a great numbers in junior college. He has a rifle arm. Being here this spring is a great advantage. It gives him a chance to learn our system prior to two-a-days. He can get comfortable in our offense and be ready to go in that No. 3 spot.

Last year’s backup QB, Clint Cochran, was recently accepted into medical school at UT. What is his status with the team?

Amstutz: Clint will remain on our team but in more of a student-assistant capacity. He will practice with the team, working with our quarterbacks. He will dress on game day and help with getting signals to our quarter-back. Clint is satisfied with this new role and so are we. He will still be a part of this football team and help us reach our goals.

It looks like junior DaJuane Collins is the heir-appar-ent at running back. What do you think of DaJuane and the other running backs?

Amstutz: I think DaJuane is ready to take over at run-ning back. He’s a strong runner with great balance. He has shown the ability to make plays. (Sophomore) Gor-don Warner has great quickness. He got a chance to play last year and we want him to build off that. (Freshman) Adonis Thomas was redshirted last year. We also expect him to provide depth and make big plays with his quick-ness.

Are Stephen Williams and Nick Moore the best tan-dem of receivers you’ve ever had?

Amstutz: I would say they are the most talented pair of receivers we’ve had since I’ve been head coach. We expect a lot out of them. (Junior) Stephen Williams is a big-play receiver. He came into his own last year. We expect him to be a big part of our offense next year. Nick Moore is a senior and will be the leader of the receiver corps. He has excellent hands, and he’s really develop-ing as special receiver.

How is the tight end position shaping up?

Amstutz: John Allen is a senior now. He’s been a real steady player for us throughout his career. We also have junior Tom Burzine, sophomore Matt Fought and red-shirt freshman Danny Noble. So we have a lot of depth and a good foundation for the future at tight end.

Page 7: University of Toledo Football · Friday, April 11 (3:15 p.m.) MAC Football Media Day Detroit, MI Monday, July 28 Players report to preseason camp Wednesday, Aug. 6 First day of Practice

Q& A With Tom AmstutzOn the offensive line you lose three-time All-MAC left tackle John Greco but you do have three starters back.

Amstutz: John Morookian is enrolled in this spring and will compete with redshirt freshman Mike VanderMeulen for John Greco’s left tackle spot. Those guys will battle for that spot, so we will have a new player there. Jared DeWalt will stay at left guard where he will be a three-year starter. Buster Garrett will be out center and Kevin Kowalski will be our starter at left guard; both of those guys were starters last year Three players will battle for the right tackle position, Chris Meenan, Shawn Glaser and Jan Gewont. Jan was the starter last year and he is coming back from injury this spring.

You have an unusual situation on defense where three starters who didn’t play much last year due to injury are back. What’s that dynamic like bringing those guys back?

Amstutz: We are adding players back into our defense that are in the all-conference category. Tyrrell Herbert at free safety, Sean Williamson and Doug Westbrook on the defensive line. These guys were missing a year ago. We’re also adding Archie Donald, who sat out last year after playing a lot as a freshman. He could be a starter for us at linebacker. It hurt us last season having these guys out, but for this season it gives our defense a lot of depth. It allowed our younger players to get playing time and mature.

Your defensive backfield looks especially deep. You not only have Herbert and Barry Church at safety, you have seven other players who have started at least one game at safety or cornerback in their careers.

Amstutz: Church and Herbert are the leaders of the sec-ondary and the leaders of the defense overall. They are players we can count on to make big plays. They have good communication and a good relationship with each other that makes them a stronger force. We do have great depth and experience in our secondary, and we also think we have added some very strong freshmen coming in. Some of them could be in the playing rotation next sea-son.

You have four experienced linebackers, as well.

Amstutz: Having Archie Donald back is a huge key. And D.J. Summer and Keith Forestal were two of our leading tacklers last year, as well as Beau Brudzinski. Next fall we are also adding Daris Quinn, who I think was one of the best junior college linebackers in the country last year.

How does the defensive line shape up? Are you mak-ing any changes in the defensive line?

Amstutz: Terrell Willis is moving from linebacker to de-fensive end. Albertson Alexandre, a junior college trans-fer, will be here this spring playing at defensive end. And we get Sean Williamson and Doug Westbrook back after missing most of last year due to injury. Alex Johnson and Matt Shumaker played a lot last year, too, so we have a lot of players we can use at defensive end. At tackle, we have Alfred Martin, Maurice Hill, Skylaar Constant and Joe Underwood, all who were in the rotation last year. We have enough depth at all our positions where we should be able to keep guys fresh throughout the game.

Do you think people will be surprised at how much better your defense is this year?

Amstutz: That’s our goal. Our goal is to have great im-provement on our defense. We have to put much more pressure on the quarterback, to get more sacks and tack-les for losses.

On special teams you have one of the most efficient short-range kickers in NCAA history, Alex Steiger-wald, who has made 21-of-22 field goals in the last two seasons. Who will be doing the kickoffs?

Amstutz: We’re expecting Brett Brodbeck to keep im-proving and be our kickoff guy.

As far as the punter position, you lost one of the best punters in the country in Brett Kern. Who will take his place?

Amstutz: Bill Claus is our No.1 punter right now. Also, David Pasquale, our freshman quarterback, was a punter in high school, so we may consider using him in that role. It’s also still possible we may bring in someone else as a walk-on punter.

Toledo Head Coach Tom Amstutz For more than 30 years now, University of Toledo Football and Tom Amstutz have been inseparable. Born in Toledo, Amstutz has bled Midnight Blue and Gold all his life. As a boy, he went to games at the Glass Bowl. As a young man, he attended UT and played for the Rockets. And for nearly all of his adult life he has toiled on the football sidelines, first as an assistant for two decades and then as the head coach, a position he has held since 2001. His popularity in Toledo is unrivaled. He has appeared in numerous local TV and radio commercials, been featured on billboards, been the subject of many newspaper and magazine articles and appeared at countless local charitable functions. He even has his own bobblehead doll.

Among the Nation’s Best Amstutz’s tenure as head football coach of the University of Toledo began with a bang and has been making noise ever since. In his first season, he led the Rockets to a MAC championship, a victory at the Motor City Bowl and a No. 22 final ranking. Since then his teams have rattled off four more winning seasons and three more bowl appearances. During his coaching tenure, he has five wins over Top 25 teams, including back-to-back victories in 2004. He also sports a sparkling 37-18 record against MAC opponents. Amstutz has won four Mid-American Conference West Division titles, captured two outright league crowns and brought his team to four bowl games, including a 45-13 victory over UTEP in the 2005 GMAC Bowl. The hallmark of Amstutz’s career has been consistency. He followed up his amazing rookie season with an even more improbable sophomore campaign, guiding the Rockets to another MAC West title. The 2003 season saw another winning season, as the Rockets went 8-4 and fought to the final whistle of the final game in an effort to claim their third straight crown. In 2004, Amstutz led his team to a 9-4 mark and his second MAC Champi-onship title. He also added wins over No. 22 Northern Illinois and No. 24 Bowling

Green, and a third trip to the Motor City Bowl game in four seasons. In 2005, the Rockets went 9-3, cul-minating with a thrilling 44-41 double-overtime victory over Bowling Green to close out the regular season, and a con-vincing romp over UTEP in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, AL.

Dreams Can Come True Amstutz, 52, was born and raised in Toledo with dreams of one day becoming the head coach of the Rockets. In Amstutz’s case, his dreams did come true. But they also came with a

price, namely, hard work. Amstutz paid his dues, first as a player, then as a graduate assistant, then finally as an assistant coach, a position he held at Toledo for 21 years. Amstutz’s dream turned into a reality, as he was named UT’s head coach in December of 2000. The rest, as they say, is history. It’s a simple tale, but an appropriate one for Amstutz. He’s a straight-forward, no-nonsense kind of guy. No pretensions here. What you see is what you get. That’s just the kind of man they like in Toledo. From West Toledo to the East Side, from the central city to the suburbs, Toledoans all say pretty much the same thing: Tom is one of us. Like the city where he was born and bred, there’s nothing glamorous or fancy about Amstutz. And that suits him just fine. “Toledo is a blue-collar, union town, where you start at the bottom and work hard to make your way up the ladder. So I think the people here appreciate a guy like me,” Amstutz said.

Amstutz’s ascension capped a coaching career that began modestly as a student assistant in 1977. Except for three years as an assistant at Navy from 1987-89 and a two-week stint at Missouri in 2000 prior to being named UT’s head coach, Amstutz has never worked anywhere else. “When you stay and work hard, good things happen,” he said. “That’s a good lesson for the players to look at. I started at Toledo by bringing in the coffee and rolling up the mats. I was a position coach, then a coordinator, then the assistant head coach. It’s just hard work and believing in the program. That’s why I’m here.”

Playing Days in High School and at UT Except for that three-year coaching stint at Navy, Amstutz has lived in the Toledo area his entire life. Amstutz grew up on Scottwood Avenue on the city’s north side, the son of George and Fran Amstutz. He attended Whitmer High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. During his high school days, he also was a big fan of the UT football teams that went 35-0 from 1969-71. Even then, Amstutz had his eyes on the sidelines. “I remember watching those great Toledo teams with Chuck Ealey and Mel Long,” said Amstutz. “And I remember thinking, I want to be the coach here some day. I didn’t even realize there was a whole staff of assistant coaches. I just knew there was a coach and I wanted to do that.” Amstutz enrolled at UT in 1973 and eventually earned a spot on the football team in his sophomore year in 1974 under Head Coach Jack Murphy. He started seven games at offensive guard in his junior season, and lettered again in his senior year. Amstutz stayed on as a student assistant for the 1977 season while he completed work on his bachelor’s degree in physical education. The following season, Head Coach Chuck Stobart added Amstutz to his staff, assigning him to coach the offensive tackles and tight ends. Later, Amstutz moved to the defensive line and stayed on the defensive side of the ball for the rest of his days as an assistant. Amstutz left Toledo in 1987 to join Elliot Uzelac’s staff at Navy. He stayed at Navy for three seasons, returning to Toledo in 1990 under new Head Coach Nick Saban. Amstutz remained on the Toledo staff when Gary Pinkel took over as head coach in 1991. Amstutz was elevated to defensive coordinator in 1994 and assistant head coach in 1999.

The winner was announced live on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6, 2007 in Orlando, FL. Kern’s appearance at the broadcast marked the first time Toledo has had a finalist for any award at the ESPN’s annual College Football Awards show.

THREE ROCKETS PLAY IN POST-SEASON ALL-STAR GAMES Three Rocket seniors played in post-season all-star games in 2008. Punter

Brett Kern played in the Hula Bowl (Jan. 12) and the East-West Shrine Game (Jan. 19), offensive tackle John Greco played in the East-West Shrine Game and running back Jalen Parmele participated in the Hula Bowl. Parmele led all runners in the Hula Bowl with 46 yards rushing.

FOUR ROCKETS FIN-ISH AMONG NATION’S LEADERS Four Rockets finished the 2007 season among the national statistical leaders.

Senior running back Jalen Parmele ranked ninth in the nation and second in the MAC in rushing, averaging 125.9 yards per game. Parmele also was 10th in the country in all-purpose yards (185.7) and 19th in kickoff returns (28.0). Senior punter Brett Kern was sec-ond in the nation and first in the league in punting with a 46.1 average, trailing Cincinnati’s Kevin Huber (46.9). Sophomore wide receiver Stephen Williams finished 13th in receiving yards (97.4 yards per game). Sophomore kicker Alex Steigerwald led the nation in field goal percentage (1.000/13-13).

2007 Notes and HighlightsOND-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DIS-TRICT IV TEAM Senior Brett Kern was named sec-ond-team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kern had a 3.38 grade point average in geography. Kern was also named as one of 153 semifinalists for the National Football Foundation “National Scholar-Athlete Award” which gives one senior the “Draddy Award” as the nation’s top scholar-athlete.

STEIGERWALD: MR. PERFECT Sophomore placekicker Alex Stei-gerwald was a perfect 13-of-13 in his field-goal attempts in 2007, the only kicker in the FBS (Division I-A) with at least 10 field-goal attempts to have a perfect mark. His long boot was a 44-yarder vs. Purdue on Sept. 1, but his biggest kick undoubtedly was the 40-yard game-winner with no time left in a 43-40 win vs. Ohio on Oct. 20. Steigerwald has missed only one field goal in his career, a 36-yarder vs. Ball State in 2006. He is 20-of-21 in two years as the UT placekicker.

PARMELE AMONG THE ALL-TIME RUSHING LEADERS Jalen Parmele finished his UT career ranked fourth on the school’s career rushing list with 3,119 yards. His season total of 1,511 yards in 2007 ranks fourth all-time.UT CAREER RUSHING LEADERS1. Chester Taylor (1998-2001) .......... 4,8492. Wasean Tait (1993-98)................... 4,3383. ROCKETS ARE 43-6 AT HOME IN LAST 49 GAMES Toledo’s win over Eastern Michigan on Nov. 3 gave it a 5-2 home record in 2007 and moved its record to 43-6 in its last 49 games in the Glass Bowl. The

streak goes back to the middle of the 1999 season.

MOVIN’ ON UP With the win over Iowa State on Sept. 22, Tom Amstutz moved into sole possession of second place on UT’s all-time victory list ahead of Dan Simrell. Amstutz now has 55 career wins as the Rockets’ leader. Gary Pinkel, now at Missouri, leads with 73 wins.UT All-Time Coaching WinsCoach (Years) Record Pct. FIVE ROCKET STARTERS MISSED ALMOST ALL OF 2007 SEASON Senior FS Tyrrell Herbert, senior CB Nigel Morris, sophomore DE Douglas Westbrook, senior DE Sean Williamson and redshirt freshman OL Jan Gewont all missed virtually the entire season with injuries. Morris, Herbert, Williamson and Gewont were hurt in the season-opener vs. Purdue on Sept. 1, while Westbrook went down at Kansas on Sept. 15.

INJURIES FORCE AMSTUTZ TO SHUFFLE HIS QUARTERBACKS Starting quarterback Aaron Opelt twice went down with injuries in 2007, forcing head coach Tom Amstutz to play true freshman D.J. Lenehan. Lenehan was thrust into the starting role for three games, and acquitted himself quite well. Lenehan debuted in the fourth quarter of Toledo’s 42-28 loss to West-ern Michigan on Sept. 29 when Opelt and backup Clint Cochran both went down with injuries. Lenehan was 0-of-2 passing vs. the Broncos but moved the Rockets in for a touchdown thanks to two pass interference calls. Lenehan started against Liberty on Oct. 6 and led the Rockets to a 35-34 win. He finished 19-of-23 for 226 yards, including a 28-yard TD pass in the third quarter. He started the contest red-hot, completing his first 11 passes.

Page 25: University of Toledo Football · Friday, April 11 (3:15 p.m.) MAC Football Media Day Detroit, MI Monday, July 28 Players report to preseason camp Wednesday, Aug. 6 First day of Practice

2007 Notes and Highlights In a 43-33 loss at Buffalo the follow-ing week, Lenehan threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns. He was 32-of-50 passing with one interception. When Opelt was injured again late in the Ball State game on Nov. 13, Lene-han moved into the starting role again for the Bowling Green game. Cochran came on in relief in that game and threw for 202 yards and one TD.

YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR THE ROCKETS A total of 43 freshmen and sopho-mores saw action for the Rockets, which hopefully bodes well for the 2008 sea-son. The numbers break down as fol-lows:• True freshmen played: 11• Redshirt freshmen played: 9• Sophomores played: 23• Juniors played: 9• Seniors played: 16** Two seniors, Tyrrell Herbert and Sean Williamson, received injury hardship redshirts waivers and will return in 2008.

ROCKETS DOMINATE NORTH-ERN ILLINOIS IN RECORD-SET-TING 70-21 VICTORY Toledo’s 70-21 victory over North-ern Illinois on Oct. 27 had Rocket his-torians scrambling for the record books. Here are some of the records that were broken or nearly broken in the win: • 812 yards of total offense set a MAC record. The previous mark was 733 set by Marshall vs. Buffalo in 2002. The 812 yards was the most by an FBS (NCAA I-A) school in 2007. • 70 points is the most points the Rockets have ever scored against a MAC opponent. The previous mark was 65 set vs. Eastern Michigan in 2002. The all-time mark is 88 set vs. Davis & Elkins in 1951. • 10 touchdowns was the second-most in school history. • 42 first-half points ranks tied for third in school history. • 35 first downs ranked second in

school history, one shy of the record set against Western Michigan in 2004. • PK Alex Steigerwald tied a school record with 10 extra points.

ANOTHER BIG CROWD IN THE GLASS BOWL Attendance for the Purdue game on Sept. 1 was a near-ca-pacity 26,100, the largest crowd since the Toledo-Bowling Green game on Nov. 23, 2004. That game against the Falcons drew 31,981. The crowd for the Purdue game was the 24th-largest in Glass Bowl history.
