As I sat in my room, my roommate, Regina, sang as she made her bed. Reginahad a French accent, and it was easy to tell. “Come sail away, come sail away
me.” She sang in her beautiful voice. I was jealous of Regina, she was so beautiful.
Her blond hair was blond and wavy, very much unlike mine. Her blue eyes were
like the ocean, big and round. She danced around the room in her sun dress, her
golden wings spread wide.
“What’s the matter, Little Polly?” It always bugged me when people called me
short. I hated looking like a little kid when I was supposed to look like a fifteen-
year old.
“Nothing, Regina. Just a little tired.” She stopped dancing and sat by me.
“Maybe you should rest.”
“I’m going to go see Jag; I need to talk to him.” Regina laughed her musical
laugh, “So you like him. It’s easy to tell.” I could feel my face heat up, “No I don’t
Regina. He just my friend.” She lightly bumped my shoulder, “Best friend. That
you do everything with.”
“Stop, I’m going down stairs. To talk to him.” I stomped down the stairs, as Imumbled to myself. “I don’t like him. I don’t like him. I don’t like him.”
Jag was in the dining room, talking to some girls, who were throwing
themselves all over him. It took a lot not ripping them away from him. Once he
saw me, he pulled away from them, and walked by me. “Feeling better,” he asked
me, concerned. I let my limp hair fall over my face, not caring. “No,” I said

simply. He put him arm around my shoulders and hugged me. “I’ve been thinking
about home a lot. I really miss it,” I said to him. I felt Jag smile into my hair.
“Want to go to the game room? You look like you could use a pick-me-up.” I
nodded, and followed Jag.
The game room is code word for ‘Jag’s Room.’ Jag shared the room with Caleb,
who was a video game addict. Caleb was in the corner, with the controller in his
hand, staring at the TV behind his glasses. Caleb was über-smart, but wasted his
time playing dumb games.
“Caleb, you’re still playing,” Jag said as he let go of me.
“How long has he been playing this time,” I asked, moving towards Caleb. He
was wearing his head-phones that had a microphone on it.
“Like, half a day.” I was standing behind Caleb now. I put a finger to my mouth,
telling Jag to be quiet. I quickly pulled Caleb’s head-phones off and yelled,
“Gottcha!” really loud in his ear. He jumped up and screamed, and dropped his
game controller. I started laughing, and fell onto Jag’s bed.
“Oh my God, you guys are jerks,” Caleb yelled, mainly at me. “Well,” Jag said,
laughing too. “That would not have happened if would have answered me.” Caleb
rolled his eyes, and turned his TV off.
“We’re sorry, Caleb. I just couldn’t help myself. It was too funny.” Caleb glaredat me. Jag patted his shoulder, “Really sorry, man. I’ll make sure she doesn’t do it
again.”
“You will,” I ask, sitting up.
“Yeah, I will.”
“How so,” I smile innocently.
“If you do it again, I’ll sit on you,” He says smiling at me. I breathe in deeply.
“Really? Try and I’ll kick your butt,” I say laughing. Caleb looks back between
me and Jag. He points to the door, “I’m gone. Don’t mind me.” He quickly walks
out the door, closing it behind him. Jag sits by me. “Are you really going to sit on
me?” He laughs, “No. I was just teasing you.” I lay back on his bed, and sigh.
“Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly?” Jag makes little designs on

my arm with his finger, without thinking. “Yeah,” he says. “I’ve dreamed of it.
What it would feel like to have the wind run through my feathers.” I smile up at
him. I was feeling butterflies in my stomach. He smiled back down at me.
All the kids at The Lab have never been outside since they grew their wings.
Except, Smith. He escaped once. He didn’t get very far. But he got out. I and Jag
needed to get out. Regina and Caleb, too. That night, before test, I was going to
talk to Smith.
It was about two hours before lunch, and I was getting nervous. I’ve only talked
to Smith once. When he told me to get out of his way in the lunch line. And I told
him to make me. He just glared at me. So it didn’t go well the first time we met.
Maybe he would look past that. But I highly doubt it.
I took a deep breath as I pushed the door to the guys lounge. Smith was sittingon one of the black couches. He was cute, to me. His hair was a dusty-blond and he
had an amazing smile. (Not that he’s ever smiled at me.) His eyes were green like
emeralds and his wings were grey like a pigeon’s. He had a faint scar under his left
eye that you could barely see. His eyes narrowed as he saw me step into the room.
He stood up and glared down at me. I suddenly felt as big as a mouse.
“What do you want,” he asked coldly.
“Um, I need to ask your help,” I said quietly. His face hardened. “Of course,
every time someone needs something, they come to me.” He grabs my arm and
pulls me out of the room. He pulls me down the hall, then into a very neat room.
He lets go of my arm, and locks the door. “Okay,” he sighs, looking exhausted.
“What do you need to ask?” He sits on his bed, and puts his head in his head.
“Can you help me and my friends get out of here,” I said barely above a
whisper. He pulled his face up quickly. His face was mean and red. “You really
think I’ll do that?! Last time I got out I was caught and beaten by the director here!
I will not go through that again.”
“Smith, please we have to get out of here. I have a bad-“
“No. I don’t care. I will not help you or your bratty friends.” I curled my fist up.
He wasn’t even letting me talk.

“They’re not bratty. And neither am I. You’re not even letting me talk.” I said
braver than before. His face went back to its normal color, and I continued, “We
need to get out of here. They’re going to send the Erasers in to disciple us. And
then the tests are going to get worse.”
“You’re crazy, Midnight. You know that? I don’t really care. I don’t care if I
die, if you die, or if anyone dies. It would be better if we did.” I couldn’t believe
what I was hearing. I could feel my face getting hot, and my eyes sting. No, I can’t
cry in front of him.
“God,” I said. And it was too late, I felt a warm wetness go down my face. “I’m
so stupid coming and asking you for help.” I put my hand on the door knob. Then I
turned and said to him, “You’re a jerk. You disserve to rot here.” I opened the door
and stormed down the hallway. But I felt something pull my arm. Smith was
behind me, and he a shameful face. I pulled my hand away from him, and wiped
my face. “Midnight-“
I interrupted him, “Polly. Call me Polly,” I growled at him.
“Okay, Polly. I’m sorry I said that. I didn’t mean it. It’s just, that if I get caught
again, they’ll kill me. And I do want to get out of here. I want to see my mom, and
baby sister. And I really don’t know you, or your friends. I don’t trust you guys.” I
wanted him to add ‘yet’ to the end of his sentence.
“I want to see my family too. Have lunch with us, then, we’ll come up with a
plan.” He smiled at me for the first time, and I smiled back. I probably looked
horrible, I most likely had a puffy red face now, and my nose was stuffed up now.
“Deal,” we shook hands, and I turned and went down the hall. “Polly, I’m sorry
again!” Smith called. I smiled to myself as I went into my room
