Time’s Out Chapter 1 © Melanie Sawyer

A Maximum Ride Fan Fiction.

Once upon a time, Midnight (Polly) Race had a normal life. But that changed one

day that was like any other.

Midnight was sitting at the table eating her dinner with her family. She was

always a small girl, especially as a little six-year old. Her mother was rocking her

baby brother, feeding him some powder formula. Her father, working on his

computer while eating his dinner. Little Midnight hid her face behind her blond

hair.

Midnight’s past was sketchy. She was a bad influent on the other kids. She got

expelled from several schools. Her mother was worried about her, and her father

acted as if she never existed. And even more so, with her new family member

Tommy, Midnight felt so alone.

Okay, here’s how her story goes.

Midnight was trying to up to little brother on the play ground, when she was

tripped. She fell back on her back, and stared at the person that tripped her. It was alarge man with an incredibly harry face, and arms. There was drool coming out of

his mouth. Midnight was a little freaked out by the man’s appearance. She was

only six. The man picked her up by her arms, pulling her hard. Midnight squeaked

in pain. The man laughed and said, “You’re perfect, Midnight Race.” Midnight

tried to scream, but she was knocked out; the man stuck a needle into her arm.

When she woke up, she was strapped to a bed, men and women in lad coats were

leaning over her, poking her with needles. Midnight started to cry again. What was

going to happen to her family? Her little brother? Were they going to look for her?

Midnight started to scream in fear. One of the women covered her mouth and

spoke softly, “Calm down, dear. You’re safe. No need to be scared, this place ismuch better than your home.”

I came back into present day, shaking now. That happened nine years ago. Now, I

was in the large room the lad people make all of the made kids share as a TV room.

My wings were folded against my back, under my sweat-shirt. Yes, I said ‘wings ‘ .

I am, and all of the kids here, are 98% human and 2% bird, so we all have wings.

All the kids here were all taken away from their homes and families. My friend,

Jag, punches my arm lightly, “Hello? Polly, come back to earth.” Jag always calls

Polly because I have wings that kind of look like an eagle’s. “I-I’m back. I had

another flashback. I’m a little freaked out.” Jag laughs and shakes his head. Just so

you know, Jag is just my best friend. I love nothing more than a brother. We’ve

been best friends from the very beginning. He was there when my wings were

growing in, and he helped my get through it ‘cause he already his.

“That does not surprise me, Polly. But what did you see?” I looked at him. Every

girl here, is in love with him. He is beautiful. His eyes are as grey as storm clouds,

and his black hair is as black as his wings, which are like raven’s wings. Me, I’m a

scrappy little fifteen-year old. My blond hair is dull, almost brown.

“How I got here. My life before I got here. I miss it,” I say, confused.

“Don’t worry, Polly,” he said patting my arm. “We’ll get out soon.”
