‘PDO Omanisation at 76%’Restucci told TOO that the cur-rent Omanisation rate within PDO is 76 per cent.

“At PDO, we’re at 76 per cent, and partly because every time we grow, other companies take our talent. If you look at the other operators, many of those leaders are ex-PDO. A lot of the ministers, undersecretaries, business lead-ers across Oman are ex-PDO. So we continue to be a talent devel-opment university that delivers quality talent,” he said.

On Thursday, 71 young Omani jobseekers had graduated as as-sistant drillers with PDO con-tractors, in a ceremony held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Muscat, under the auspices of Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi , undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas.

The graduates completed a 15-month PDO-funded voca-tional training course and are now certifi ed to work as assistant drillers, both in the PDO conces-sion area and beyond, supervising the work done on the drilling fl oor and all other tasks in connection with well drilling operations.

After the graduation ceremo-

ny, the proud Omani graduates told TOO that they were very happy to have had this training opportunity.

Essa Mohammed, 24, said he was happy to have completed the programme.

“We did face a lot of challenges, but thank God, we managed to succeed. We have learnt a lot in this programme, from working as a roustabout, fl oor man, tester and fi nally to work as an assistant driller. I feel very happy,” he said.

Balarab Saif Al Batashi, 24, said this is a fi rst step in his career as a future driller.

“Today is a day of harvest, we have all graduated! We thank God for this. I enjoyed the programme. After passing this stage, I feel very proud. I want to reach the level of driller in the future,” he said.

Said Al Harassi, 25, said he wants to be a rig manager in the future.

“I’m very proud of myself and of PDO, which gave us the chance to do this training. We learned so much in this programme. I would also like to thank the Dalma Training Institute for helping us

and all the rigs to which we were invited,” he said.

According to Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi , undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, thou-sands of expat jobs in the oil and gas sector can be Omanised.

“We provide the companies with trained and certifi ed techni-cians and this is one side of gov-ernment’s programme,” he said while addressing the media on the sidelines of the graduation ceremony. “Our aim is to develop and train Omanis not only in a theoretical manner, but also in practical terms,” he continued.

Speaking about the other pro-fession that the ministry looks to Omanise, Al Aufi said “We started with the welding profession, now we are looking into professions, such as assistant drillers, pipefi t-ters, electrical and instrumental technicians etc.” He also advised the Omani workforce to take these opportunities seriously. “Opportunities will not repeat themselves and there is a lot of demand so we will take whoever is interested in developing them-selves,” Al Aufi asserted.

REGIONThe Washington Post, citing two US offi cials, reported earlier on Friday that Syria’s government had released Kevin Dawes, (in picture) who was abducted after travelling to the civil war-ravaged nation in 2012.

Iraq urged not to let politics impede war against IS group

BAGHDAD: US Secretary of State John Kerry, visiting Bagh-dad on Friday, urged Iraq not to let its political crisis interfere with the fi ght against IS militant group and voiced unequivocal support for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi.

Abadi last week unsettled Iraq’s political elite with a proposed cabinet reshuffl e that aims to curb corruption by replacing long-time politicians with technocrats and academics.

His aim is to free Iraqi minis-tries from the grip of a political class that has used the system of ethnic and sectarian quotas insti-tuted after the US-led invasion in 2003 to amass wealth and infl u-ence. US offi cials fear the politi-cal unrest may harm Iraq’s eff orts to retake territory it has lost to IS militants, notably its second city of Mosul, seized when parts of the Iraqi army collapsed in 2014.

DecisionsKerry told reporters that deci-sions about the reshuffl e were for the Iraqis to decide but said he had indicated to Abadi that it was important to have political stabil-ity in Iraq so that military opera-tions are not aff ected. “I want to reiterate the support of President Obama, Vice President Biden, myself as secretary, and the entire administration (in) the United

States for Prime Minister Abadi, who has demonstrated critical leadership in the face of enormous security, economic and political challenges,” Kerry told reporters at the US Embassy inside Bagh-dad’s fortifi ed Green Zone.

Kerry met earlier with Abadi, who is grappling with an econo-my battered by low oil prices and strained by the cost of the war against IS which has displaced more than three million people and destroyed towns and cities.

Kerry said the United States was providing an additional $155

million in humanitarian aid to Iraqis displaced by IS.

Asked if there had been any discussion about more US troops going to Iraq, Kerry said there had been no formal request from the Iraqis and the issue had not been raised on Friday.

The United States, which with-drew its forces from Iraq in 2011, has redeployed several thousand as part of a coalition it is leading against IS.

In the past two weeks, Iraqi forces backed by US-led coalition air strikes have retaken signifi -

cant parts of Hit, a town 130km (80 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

However, an off ensive billed as the fi rst phase of a campaign to recapture the northern city of Mosul has been put on hold until reinforcements arrive.

Kerry said Abadi had made clear his commitment to retaking Mosul and that he has a timetable for doing so.

“The fact is, in Iraq, Daesh (IS) fi ghters have not been on the of-fensive in months,” Kerry said. “They are losing ground, including more than 40 per cent of the terri-

tory that they once controlled in Iraq.” Baghdad is also hamstrung by the plunge in global oil prices that has shrivelled its main source of revenue. On Thursday, offi cials from the International Monetary Fund and the government said the oil price forecast in the 2016 budg-et would be cut to about $32 a bar-rel from $45, widening Iraq’s fi scal defi cit by several billion dollars.

France rules out air strikes in Libya

PARIS: France’s foreign minister on Friday ruled out launching air strikes or sending troops on the ground to tackle IS militant group in Libya, but said it could help se-cure the UN-brokered national unity government in Tripoli.

Western powers are backing the unity government, hoping it will seek foreign support to confront IS militants, deal with migrant fl ows from Libya to Europe and restore oil production to shore up Libya’s economy.

However, there are fears that direct military intervention could worsen the situation especially if a political vacuum remains in the country.

“We shouldn’t make the same mistakes as in the past. If you’re imagining air strikes, ground troops, that’s not on the table. It’s not France’s position anyway,” Jean-Marc Ayrault told France Info radio. “However, to secure the government, if Mr (Fayez) Seraj (head of the unity govern-ment) asks for international help then we’ll study it.”

Diplomatic sources have said that so far there has been no re-quest from Seraj other than to help him leave the country should the security situation in Tripoli deteriorate.

Paris played a leading part in the NATO air campaign that helped rebels overthrow former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 but lat-er regretted the lack of support giv-en to the authorities afterwards.

French aircraft are now con-ducting reconnaissance fl ights over Libya while French military advisers operate on the ground in conjunction with Britain and the United States.

Ayrault said this week France hoped to reopen its embassy in as soon as possible as a sign of support for Libya’s new unity government.

“Yesterday, I spoke to Mr Seraj, who invited me to come to Libya. As soon as the conditions are right, I shall go,” Ayrault said. — Reuters

Probe suggests pilot error led to fl ydubai jet crashMOSCOW: A fl ydubai passen-ger plane crashed in Russia last month after being fl own in a con-tradictory manner minutes be-fore it smashed into the ground, a statement from investigators said on Friday, suggesting pilot error was to blame.

The Boeing 737-800, operated by Dubai-based budget carrier fl ydubai, came down in the early hours of March 19 at Rostov-on-Don airport in southern Russia on its second attempt to land af-ter fl ying from Dubai.

All 62 people on board were killed. Poor weather conditions, including strong winds and rain, made landing diffi cult.

Contradictory mannerIn a statement on Friday, the Moscow-based Interstate Avia-tion Committee (IAC), which is investigating the crash, said the plane had been fl own in a contra-dictory manner in the minutes before it crashed.

It said the crew had decided to abort landing and circle round again. They had begun to gain altitude when the controls of the plane were abruptly pushed away, pushing its nose lower.

That, combined with the an-gle of the tail fi n, sent the plane into a steep dive which the pi-lots were unable to pull out of,

the IAC said. It stopped short of saying the pilots were defi nitely to blame, noting they had the necessary experience and train-ing, but said their condition and actions were being evaluated. Flydubai Chief Executive Ghaith Al Ghaith said in a statement his company was aware of the IAC’s initial fi ndings and supported the investigators’ work. He said he wanted to get conclusive fi nd-ings as quickly as possible.

The IAC said it now needed to complete work on decipher-ing the pilots’ fi nal conversa-tions in the hours leading up to the crash before it could wrap up its investigation.

Unnamed sources have told Russian newspapers that an ini-tial read-out of the plane’s fl ight recorders had suggested the two pilots argued about the right course of action to take in the minutes before the crash. —Reuters

Release of American citizen in Syria hailed

WASHINGTON/BEIRUT: US State Department on Friday wel-comed the release of an American citizen held by Syrian authorities and said it was working to get more information on another who went missing there in 2012.

State Department spokesman John Kirby announced the release in a statement without identifying the individual.

The Washington Post, citing two US offi cials, reported earlier Fri-day that Syria’s government had released Kevin Dawes, who was abducted after travelling to the civil war-ravaged nation in 2012.

Dawes, described by the news-paper as a freelance photographer, was recently allowed to call family and receive care packages, signal-ing to offi cials that the Syrian gov-ernment was moving toward his release, the Post reported.

The newspaper said Dawes’ re-lease was seen as a positive sign for American reporter Austin Tice, who also went missing in Syria in 2012.

The State Department is con-tinuing to work through Czech offi -cials in Syria to get information on Tice as well as on other US citizens missing in Syria.

India in talks tobuy Predator drones from US

NEW DELHI: India is in talks with the United States to pur-chase 40 Predator surveillance drones, offi cials said, a possible fi rst step towards acquiring the armed version of the aircraft.

India is trying to equip the mili-tary with more unmanned tech-nologies to gather intelligence as well as boost its fi repower along the vast land borders with Paki-stan and China. It also wants a closer eye on the Indian Ocean.

New Delhi has already acquired surveillance drones from Israel to monitor the mountains of India administered Kashmir.

As defence ties deepen with the United States, which sees India as a counterweight to China in the region, New Delhi has asked Washington for the Predator se-ries of unmanned planes built by privately-held General Atomics, military offi cials said.

“We are aware of Predator interest from the Indian Navy. However, it is a government-to-government discussion,” Vivek Lall, chief executive of US and International Strategic Develop-ment at San Diego-based General Atomics, told Reuters.

The US government late last

year cleared General Atomics’ proposal to market the unarmed Predator XP in India. It was not clear when the delivery of the drones would take place.

The navy wants them for sur-veillance in the Indian Ocean, where the pilotless aircraft can remain airborne for 35 hours at a stretch, at a time when the Chi-nese navy is expanding ship and submarine patrols in the region.

India’s air force has also asked Washington about acquiring around 100 armed Predator C Avenger aircraft, which the Unit-ed States has used to carry out strikes against militants in Paki-stan’s northwest and neighbour-ing Afghanistan.

But it would need clearance from the Missile Technology Control Regime group of 34 na-tions as well as approval from US Congress before any transfer of lethal Predators could happen, of-fi cials said.

The push for the drones comes as US Defence Secretary Ash Carter heads to India this week-end for talks to cement military

collaboration in the fi nal months of the Obama administration.

Indian military offi cials said they expected the request for the armed aircraft to fi gure in Cart-er’s talks with his Indian counter-part, Manohar Parrikar.

Washington wants India to sign a set of agreements including on the use of each other’s military bases that would help them oper-ate together.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has signalled its willingness to move forward with the proposed pacts after the previous administration did not act for more than a decade.

Retired air vice marshal Man-mohan Bahadur said the pro-posed acquisition of armed Pred-ators would give the military the ability to carry out cross-border strikes, or even attack targets lying deeper inside a neighbour-ing country.

“But at the end of the day, it’s a political decision. It’s one thing to lob artillery shells, its another to use air power, that’s an escala-tion,” he said. — Reuters

Modi’s rural income promise leaves farmers, experts coldBARGARH/NEW DELHI: In-dian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to need a big rise in economic growth and a run of good weather to have a chance of fulfi lling his promise to double farmers’ incomes by 2022.

He may also have to allow farm gate prices to rise fast, agricul-tural and economic experts said, jeopardising a key policy of his fi rst two years in offi ce: keeping infl ation in check to appeal to In-dia’s swelling middle class.

The 65-year-old made his bold commitment at a February rally in the eastern state of Odi-sha, hoping to shore up support among 263 million farmers who will have a major say in his party’s fate in upcoming state elections and a national vote in 2019. “This is a government that thinks about farmers,” Modi told the rally.

To achieve this, the premier has launched a seven-pronged strate-gy including expanding irrigation, crop insurance, smarter market-ing and incentives for farmers to grow new crops.

Some in the crowd that day were less than impressed.

“It’s a political gimmick,” said smallholder Durbadala Prad-han, 54, who grows 6-1/2 acres of paddy in a rain fed area of Bar-garh district. “All governments give such alluring assurances, but have they made any diff erence?

“If you want to survive, you have to fi nd your own ways,” he said, as he ploughed a plot in front of his mud-brick home.

Pradhan’s last rice crop was rejected for sale because it was of poor quality. To get by, he keeps three oxen and two milch cows, and sells hand-rolled cigarettes and snacks from his small shop.

Experts also call Modi’s farm promise far-fetched. To come true, output would, other things being equal, have to grow at an an-nual 15 per cent. That compares with an average of below 2 per cent over the past four years.

Under Modi, the guaranteed

price the government pays for common grades of rice has risen at an annual rate of 3.7 per cent. That’s less than infl ation and be-low half the 9 per cent rate under the Congress government that preceded him. “The tools avail-able to the government to ensure that the promise doesn’t descend into a pipe dream are limited,” said Ashok Gulati, a leading farm economist, who said most of Modi’s farm initiatives had been tried before with little success.

Offi cials at the farm and fi nance ministries and the prime minis-ter’s offi ce, when asked whether the promise to double farm in-comes was backed by solid as-sumptions and costing, declined to comment on the record.

Success, one senior govern-ment offi cial said on condition of anonymity, would depend on faster economic growth generat-ing “trickle-down” benefi ts for farmers. “I don’t think it will be possible with 7 per cent economic growth - it must touch around 10 per cent,” the offi cial said.

India’s economy is growing at a rate of 7.6 per cent.

Farm incomes have increased threefold over the past 30 years, thanks to double-digit rises in wages and hikes in state procure-

ment prices during the Congress party’s decade-long rule.

That policy led to unprecedent-ed annual growth of 7.3 per cent in per-cultivator income from farming, but also heralded high food infl ation that helped Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) thrash Congress in the 2014 gen-eral election.

While weak growth in farm wages and procurement prices have cooled food infl ation, they have hurt farmers already reeling from prolonged drought.

Once seen as the rice bowl of Odisha, Bargarh district reported the most farmer suicides in the state last year. Although offi cials do not link the deaths to farm distress, villagers blame them on mounting debt and crop failures. The cost of cultivation of paddy, or unmilled rice, in Odisha rose nearly two-and-a-half times be-tween 2004/05 and 2012/13, government data show. Farmers’ incomes have failed to keep pace.

“The situation is deteriorating day by day,” said farmer Ishwar Kathar, whose brother commit-ted suicide last year after failing to repay a $750 crop loan. “Farm-ing has become expensive, but the government is not extending any help.” — Reuters

Under fire, J&K cops take to social media in self-defence

SRINAGAR: Under fi re over the lathicharge against outstation students of the NIT here, two senior offi cers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police have hit back, say-ing they don’t need “certifi cate” of nationalism or impartiality from anyone.

The police offi cers--Mubassir Latifi , a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) posted with the elite crime branch and Firoz Yehya, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) at Baramulla Headquar-ters -- took to social media on Thursday to vent their anguish over the criticism against the state police for the action against the students in the wake of the unrest at the National Institute of Technology (NIT). “J&K Po-lice doesn’t need any certifi cate of nationalism or impartiality from those whose valour doesn’t extend beyond their keypads,” Latifi post-ed on his ‘Facebook’ account.

“J&K Police is a saga of sacri-fi ce and courage and has brought this state out of a madness called terrorism,” Latifi , a Masters in Law, said.

“Jammu and Kashmir Police doesn’t discriminate on the basis

of who’s local and who’s non-lo-cal. Neither do we enjoy beating up people. Force is used only for maintenance of law and order and to disperse unlawful assembly of people,” he added.

CrimeHe said anyone resorting to vio-lence was committing a crime. “Someone resorting to violence is committing a crime and police knows how to take on crime,” he wrote. Yehya said that many of his colleagues have been asking and many more must be thinking “whose war are we fi ghting?”

“Many of my colleagues have been asking and many more must be thinking ‘whose war are we fi ghting?’ All I can tell them is that, this is just another phase and will pass.

Further, JK Police doesn’t need any certifi cate...”

“We must continue doing the

good work within the ambit of law and nothing shall deter us....Good common people who we serve may be alienated with us for rea-sons more than one and our good work shall certainly help us win their hearts,” Yehya, a Masters in Economics, said.

Yehya reminded the critics that the state police has taken tough action against its own offi cers wherever they have been found guilty of overstepping their juris-diction. “Those who are seen to be doing anything other than what law permits them to do will be tak-en to task...please remember JKP must be one of the few Police forc-es which has the courage to take action against proven off ences by offi cers of high rank and offi cials of its own force,” Yehya said.

“Police action is not doubted when a student from any other institute is booked for breaking law, but there’s controversy while

we are dealing with students of a particular institute!” wrote Yehya.

The police resorted to lathich-arge of the outstation students on April 5 when they were making attempts to come out on the road from the campus, located on the banks of Dal lake. The students tried to push their way out of campus and march on the streets of Hazratbal in a bid to return to their home. They allegedly pushed a senior police offi cer following which the police swung into ac-tion and chased them back to their rooms.

Video clippingsOn Thursday, police released sev-eral video clippings which showed the outstation students, carry-ing the national fl ag, indulging in vandalism.

Yehya said the complete video coverage of the incident at NIT would have “achieved zero de-

bate and low TRP” for some news channels. “It’s all economics, u see,” he said.

In an apparent message to TV channels during the discussion on the social networking site, he said “intelligence lies in checking out the whole set of facts rather than seeing partially true scenes on videos meant to evoke sentiments of common and less intelligent people. “Some lampoons cele-brated the defeat of Indian cricket team, other lampoons reacted and vandalised the institution.

The authorities of the institu-tion didn’t step in and one thing led to another,” he said.

Police has registered two FIRs against unknown persons relating to incidents of violence on NIT campus on April 1 and April 5.

The clashes broke out between local and outstation students last week following India’s defeat by West Indies in the World T20 Cup. Police has maintained that on April 5, the NIT students tried to take out a march outside the campus but were stopped.

“The police deployment stopped them from doing so and old them to move back. The mob resorted to violence and assaulted the policemen, including offi cers, and started stone pelting,” a police offi cial said.

He said in retaliatory action to chase away the violent mob, some students got injured who were provided fi rst aid.

Meanwhile, fresh protests rocked the NIT on Friday as the outstation students took out a march on the campus to press for their demands which includes shifting the institute out of Kash-mir. A group of students tried to march towards the main gate but were stopped by the security force personnel on duty inside the cam-pus, offi cials said.

They said the students wanted to interact with the media person-nel camping outside the main gate of the institute at Hazratbal. — PTI

Rahul slams PM for silence on probe into Panama PapersKAMALPUR (ASSAM): India’s Congress Party vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making ‘big prom-ises’ on bringing back black money and asked him to explain why he has not instituted a probe into the matter of the Chattisgarh chief minister’s son’s name featuring in the ‘Panama Papers’.

“The Panama Papers have been leaked and many names have been mentioned about black money kept in Panama. It has also men-tioned that Chattisgarh chief min-ister’s son Abhishek Singh has account in Panama,” Gandhi said while addressing a Congress poll rally here for the second phase of Assam Assembly election on April 11. “Modi makes big promises to you about bringing back black money kept abroad. He should have at least said why no investiga-tion has been ordered into the fea-turing of the chief minister’s son name in them,” Gandhi said.

He said he had asked Modi in Parliament why former IPL chief Lalit Modi, who had escaped from the country, had not been brought back. “Modiji did not utter one word in response.”

“Before (Vijay) Mallya fl ed the country he met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament House. Lalit Modi, who stole thousands of rupees, is also being kept outside the country,” he alleged.

Claiming that the Modi govern-ment was not taking action against

black money hoarders, Gandhi said, “Recently Jaitley brought a new ‘Fair and Lovely scheme’ whereby any gangster, goon, drug dealer can make their black money white by just taking it to the gov-

ernment and paying minimal tax on it.” Modi, he said, only made false promises during Lok Sabha elections about bringing back black money. “None of the Indians have received the Rs1.5 million of

that money in their bank accounts as assured by Modi.”

The Panama Papers are leaked confi dential documents on de-tailed information about off shore companies listed by a Panama-

nian corporate service provider showing how wealthy individuals, including public offi cials, conceal their money from public scrutiny.

Addressing another election rally at Dhamdhama, the Congress

vice president said this time two parties with diametrically oppo-site ideologies were contesting in the Assam Assembly elections.

“Congress believes in working for peace and development with feelings of brotherhood. On the other side is the BJP, RSS which indulge in divisive politics and talk only about violence, make one In-dian fi ght with another Indian,” Gandhi said. Claiming in which-ever state BJP forms government it creates violence there, Gandhi said, “in peaceful and developed Harya-na they made one Jat fi ght with an-other Jat within fi ve or six months after coming to power there”.

Stating that 15 years ago when BJP’s present poll alliance partner AGP was in power in the state and the saff ron party was at the Cen-tre, he said, “there was only sad news, violence and people dying till Congress came and restored the peace”. There was no progress and development in Assam dur-ing the AGP rule, he alleged. “And now they have come to you asking you to vote them back to power. Why vote for them when they can bring no development to Assam”? he asked.

“Tell Modi to go back and we only want (Chief Minister) Tarun Gogoi who worked for us. We don’t want a suit-boot ka sarkar of only 5-6 industrialist friends of his but a government in which the poor, farmers, workers, the backward people have a place,” Gandhi ex-horted the voters. — PTI

RAHA (ASSAM): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said some divisive forces were trying for a hung Assembly in northeast Indian state of Assam and appealed to the people not to allow it to happen.

“Desh ko todne wali takat bharpur koshis kar rahi hain ki Assam mein bahumat na aaye (divisive forces are trying to ensure that there is no absolute majority in Assam) and I appeal to the people to ensure there was no possibility of a hung As-sembly in the state,” Modi told an election rally.

“In Assam, you have to form a government with absolute ma-jority and now with only three days left for second phase polls, there will be attempts to spread lies and rumours but it is your duty to go to every house and foil such designs,” he said.

There should be no “back-seat driving and please ensure that the new government is not remote-controlled”, he said.

“There is no force that can stop the BJP-AGP-BPF alliance from forming the new govern-

ment in the state. I’ll come again to attend the swearing-in ceremony and to thank the people of Assam,” he said.

It was for the fi rst time in the last 30 years that the people of the country gave an absolute

majority to party to form a gov-ernment at the Centre and the result was for all to see.

“The entire world is singing the country’s praise and some are very disturbed that even countries like Saudi Arabia have become our strategic partner while Modi is being given the highest civilian award by country,” he said in his 45-minute speech.

“The award is not for Modi, but it is an honour for each In-dian. The reason for our global appreciation is that the people gave a government of absolute majority to a party which be-lieves in ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.”

He said in all BJP-ruled state the level of poverty was low, but in Assam it was very high and the Congress government which ruled here for 15 years was responsible for it. — PTI

Chandy fi les defamation suit against scam accused

KOCHI: Chief Minister of South In-dian state Kerala Oommen Chandy on Friday fi led a criminal defama-tion case against solar panel scam accused Saritha S Nair at a court, complaining that she hatched a con-spiracy to defame him by airing a news item in the media to the eff ect that he raped her.

Chandy has also fi led defa-mation case against four senior editors of two Malayalam news channels along with Saritha for airing the news on April 3 and April 4, this year. The complaint fi led before Chief Judicial Mag-istrate Court, Ernakulam, said they released a “truncated letter (allegedly written by her while she was in judicial incarceration) wherein it is stated that she was raped by the complainant in his offi cial residence--Cliff House, Thiruvananthapuram.”

“Commonsense fails to compre-hend as to how such an incident can occur in the Cliff House, where the complainant is residing with his family, and several security guards,” the complaint said.

Saritha had in a purported let-ter aired by TV channels alleged that she was abused by Chandy, who had dismissed the charge as “totally baseless” and claimed it was a conspiracy.

The local news channels had released the 25-page letter which Saritha had allegedly written in 2013 while she was in custody fol-lowing her arrest in the solar scam.

Saritha had told a TV chan-nel that she had written the letter while she was in custody.

In his complaint, the senior Congress leader said enquiries made by him thereafter revealed that the respective letter was a “newly drafted one made at the instance of the adversaries of the complainant” to tarnish his image and reputation and “to ensure that the political party represented by him meets with defeat” in the May 16 state assembly polls. — PTI

Girls in Green: Proud of the ‘Mir-acle’ at T20 World CupKARACHI: Perhaps for the fi rst time in Pakistan’s history, a world event led to the women’s cricket team getting more praise than their male counterparts. While the men plummeted to new lows in the recently concluded World T20 in India, the Girls in Green made the nation proud.

Before the tournament, both teams faced the same problem of not being able to play their prac-tice games — with the girls getting no practice whatsoever, while the boys had just one warm-up under their belt due to the political tussle between the two governments.

Upon their return back home, Sana Mir, the leader of the ladies, commended her charges for a job well done in the face of adversity. “The Pakistan team did extremely well if we take into account that we couldn’t play a single practice game before starting our World T20 campaign,” said Sana.

“It’s not easy to straight away start a big competition like the World T20 but our team was up for the fi ght and they showed that in

the campaign as we won two and lost two.”

Their fi rst clash was against the eventual winners West Indies and only a boundary proved to be the diff erence between the two sides as Pakistan lost by just four runs.

The build up to the competi-tion and its end refl ected how the Pakistan’s women team is getting better and closing the gap on the top teams. “There is defi nitely improvement shown by our side,” said Sana.

In their second Group B match, the girls defeated arch-rivals India on D/L method on the same day the men failed to end their World Cup jinx against India.

Then came an emphatic nine-wicket triumph over Bangladesh before a defeat to England ended their hopes of making the knock-out stages.

But the win over India meant that the trip was deemed an overall success.

“It was a real honour to beat the Indians considering they had scored 160 against Bangladesh, so

to restrict them to a low total was a great satisfaction and then to win at their home ground was just un-believable,” she added.

“It has been a very good cam-paign for Pakistan and there cer-tainly are good signs for future. We need more backing from the board, we’ve got time before the next big competition and I think the new T20I captain will be able to build a solid team.”

Meanwhile, the team’s star bats-man Javeria Khan, who has scored 1,602 runs in 65 ODIs, said it was disappointing to be ruled out of the competition after the fi rst match when she was struck by a bounc-er from West Indies’ Shamilia Connell.

“As a player you want to stay out there and help your team win,” she said. “I missed being part of the side against India and Bang-ladesh because that would have been amazing. It probably wasn’t my luck but the important thing is that Pakistan won. “I’m recovering well and would be in action very soon.” — Express Tribune

$2b worth infrastructure deals signed with Xinjiang

BEIJING: Companies from Chi-na’s violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang signed deals worth about $2 billion with Pa-kistan this week during a visit to Pakistan by Xinjiang’s top offi cial, who sought to cement ties with an important security partner.

Pakistan last year signed energy and infrastructure projects worth

$46 billion with China to set up a so-called China-Pakistan Eco-nomic Corridor, in a boost to Pa-kistan’s crumbling infrastructure and energy sector.

In return, China will get a free trade zone in Pakistan’s Gwadar port and access to the Arabian Sea.

New Pakistani roads will open up routes for Chinese goods into Europe and the Middle East from landlocked Xinjiang, which bor-ders Pakistan.

During a four-day visit to Paki-

stan, Xinjiang’s Communist Party chief Zhang Chunxian met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, visited Islamabad, Karachi and Gwadar, the offi cial Xinjiang Daily said on Friday.

“China and Pakistan have a deep friendship, are good neigh-bours, friends, brothers and part-ners,” the newspaper cited Zhangas saying.

“On this trip, I have deeply felt this friendship and the atmos-phere surrounding the China-Pa-

kistan Economic Corridor.”The $2 billion in agreements

covered infrastructure, solar power and logistics, among other projects, signed by companies from Xinjiang with their Pakistan counterparts, the newspaper said, without giving details.

China and Pakistan call each other “all-weather friends” and their ties have been underpinned by long-standing wariness of their common neighbour, In-dia, and a desire to hedge against

US infl uence in the region. But China has also long urged

Pakistan to weed out what it says are militants from Xinjiang, who are holed up in lawless ethnic Pashtun lands on the Pakistan-Afghan border, home to a mix of groups, including the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

While meeting Sharif, the two countries agreed to continue working together to fi ght terror-ism, strengthen border controls, maintain regional peace and sta-bility and ensure the economic corridor projects are protected, the newspaper said.

Zhang also met Pakistan’s mili-tary on the trip, it added, without elaborating.

Hundreds of people have been killed in unrest in Xinjiang in the last few years.

Exiles and rights groups say Chinese controls on the religion and culture of the Muslim Uighur people who call Xinjiang home is largely behind the violence, rather than any well-organised militant groups.

China denies any rights abuses in Xinjiang.

Zhang visited a mosque in Is-lamabad, where he “got a deep un-derstanding of Pakistan’s religious aff airs management”, the Xinjiang Daily added. — Reuters

MQM wins Karachi by-elections easilyKARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s candidates stomped home to victory in the by-elec-tions for National Assembly (NA) and Sindh Provincial Assembly (PS) in Karachi, overcoming the recent spate of defections and the general apathy that sparked a low turnout in Thursday’s polls.

According to unoffi cial re-sults, MQM’s Kamal Malick bagged 39,597 votes to secure NA-245. His closest rival, Paki-stan People’s Party’s (PPP) Sha-hid Hussain, could muster just 3,116 votes.

The NA-245 constituency became interesting when Mal-ick’s main opponent, Pakistan

Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Am-jadullah Khan, withdrew at the last minute in favour of the MQM candidate and joined the latter’s party. Despite his withdrawal, he received 1,489 votes.

Meanwhile in PS-115, MQM’s Faisal Rafi q bagged around 11,747 votes to beat MQM-Haqiqi’s Ja-meel Qadri who secured 1,381 votes. PTI’s Amjad Jah bagged only 1,210 votes while PPP’s Saeed Chawla could win only 475 votes. PS-115 was last held by MQM’s Arshad Vohra who is now the party’s nominee for Karachi’s deputy mayor. Panama Papers to help search for Assad riches Eli Lake & Josh Rogin

Syria’s democratic opposition is combing through the release of the Panama Papers to revitalise eff orts to identify and freeze bil-

lions of dollars amassed by the family and friends of their country’s dictator, Bashar Al Assad.

The papers, leaked from the Panamanian law fi rm Mossack Fonseca, have uncovered a web of shell companies and off shore accounts hid-ing wealth tied to prominent offi cials around the world. Among them are new disclosures about Rami and Hafez Makhlouf, the cousins of Assad who are estimated to have once controlled more than half of Syria’s economy. The papers also docu-ment millions of dollars’ worth of real-estate hold-ings belonging to Suleiman Marouf, an Assad ally based in London. The Coalition for a Democratic Syria, a US-based group that supports members of the opposition who are not extremists, told us this week the new information could be a map to uncovering Assad’s ill-gotten wealth.

For decades, the Assad family has stolen billions from the Syrian people and used it to fuel their in-discriminate slaughter, but we can now point to an exact path for these funds,” said Yahya Basha, the coalition’s chairman. “We call on all bodies of the US government to work to stop this despicable practice.” A US Treasury spokeswoman, Betsy Bourassa, declined to comment specifi cally on the new information about the Makhlouf brothers or Marouf. But she said, “It is important to note that the US government intently focuses on investigat-ing possible illicit activity, including violations of US tax laws or sanctions, using all sources of infor-mation, both public and non-public.”

The Panama Papers come to light at a moment when the US government has reduced the pub-lic pressure on Assad. Until recently, the Obama administration had called on Assad to step down from power. President Obama himself argued that after the Syrian leader turned his military on the civilian population in 2011, he lost legitimacy.

Today, the US has changed its tone. In the lat-est round of diplomatic negotiations, Secretary of State John Kerry and other US offi cials have said they would accept a peace deal that allowed Assad to stay in power for a period of transition while the country prepares for elections.

The trove of documents from Panama gives As-sad’s opposition a new form of leverage against his regime: money. “The initial challenge in doing as-

set recovery is identifying assets and being able to prove those assets are stolen assets, to prove the nominal owner is not the rightful owner,” said Da-vid Tafuri, a lawyer who has worked with Libya’s transitional government and Syria’s democratic opposition on asset recovery. “To the extent these documents demonstrate this, it provides the clues the opposition needs to track down the assets and take legal action to recover them.” Tafuri was part of the eff ort in 2011 to hand over the frozen assets of the Qaddafi regime to the Libyan opposition during the nation’s civil war. The U.S. government resisted handing over funds until the Libyan opposition be-came the offi cially recognized government. In the end the new Libyan government got only a small fraction of the regime’s estimated wealth.

In 2012, Syria’s opposition tried to begin the hunt for Assad’s assets on its own, but the eff ort was never fully fi nanced. Tafuri told us that US government offi cials at the time had indicated they would be willing to help out with the asset re-covery eff ort once a full campaign was under way. President Obama in December 2012 said that the Syrian National Coalition was the “legitimate rep-resentative” of the Syrian people, but it’s unclear whether the US government will help the Syrian opposition go after the funds now. Bourassa on Wednesday declined to comment on whether the Treasury was willing to assist such an eff ort today.

Rami Makhlouf, who was in charge of several Syrian state-owned enterprises before the crisis began, has been sanctioned by the US. overnment since 2008 for benefi ting and aiding the public cor-ruption of the Syrian regime. He controlled access to Syria’s telecommunications, commercial, oil, gas and banking sectors, according to the Treasury Department. Hafez, Rami’s brother, was the head of Syria’s General Intelligence Directorate and has been sanctioned by the US since 2007 as part of an eff ort to punish Syrian leaders for undermining the sovereignty of neighbouring Lebanon.

In May 2011, a few months into the Syrian gov-ernment’s crackdown on public protests, the EU sanctioned both brothers. Those sanctions ex-tended to the British Virgin Islands, where the shell companies controlled by the Makhloufs were incorporated. — Bloomberg View

A recent report of Amnesty International indicated that number of human executions world over has raised more than 50 per cent in 2015. Whilst the recorded number is highest in more than two

decades, Pakistan was ranked third in the number of executions carried out in 2015. The report further validates those coun-tries’ approach towards imposing death penalty. As the world continues to con-demn the increase in number of executions carried out in the past few years, the fact is that no absolute reduction was reported in terror or any kind of human atrocities across the world. As far as death penalty is concerned the judicial system in a number of countries, including China where capital punishment cases are mostly kept hidden, is quite appalling. If the executions are in an eff ort to bring the crimes down, the lat-est disclosure proved that the judgements are not eff ectively conveying the message across. Meanwhile, confl icts in a number of countries in the region have claimed sev-eral thousands of lives, especially women

and children, and those responsible for such barbaric acts get undue attention and endorsements from leaders of developed and develop-ing countries. — Ramachandran Nair, Ruwi

69 Myanmar activists freed by new Suu Kyi government

YANGON: The new government of Myanmar democracy cham-pion Aung San Suu Kyi released scores of jailed activists on Fri-day, just over a week after assum-ing power, and the new president is preparing to pardon 100 more people serving sentences for po-litical off ences.

Many of Suu Kyi’s support-ers and members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party were political prisoners un-

der the junta that ceded power in 2011 after nearly 50 years of mili-tary rule.

Suu Kyi herself spent years under house arrest and said on Thursday releasing remaining po-litical prisoners was a top priority.

A total of 69 student activ-

ists and supporters had charges against them dismissed and were released from jail in the town of Tharrawaddy, north of Yangon, said Zaw Htay, a spokesman for Suu Kyi’s offi ce.

Students and relatives hugged and some waved NLD fl ags after

their release. Many of them were detained during a violent police dispersal of student protests in March 2015.

President Htin Kyaw was put-ting together another pardon for more than 100 people serving sen-tences for political crimes, Zaw

Htay said. It was unclear if the military supported the moves.

The armed forces still control key cabinet posts overseeing local government, law and order and security. Amnesty International applauded the release on Friday and called on the government to free remaining prisoners of con-science and repeal laws that it said fuelled arbitrary arrests.

Remained in detentionAmnesty said at least fi ve student leaders facing charges remained in detention.

The released activists were among 414 people facing political charges in Myanmar, said Bo Kyi, the head of rights monitor the As-sistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma). The release still leaves 47 on remand in jail and another 298 on bail while fac-ing charges. The new government was sworn in on March 30 after the NLD swept a general election in November.

Brutal ruleSuu Kyi has said she wants a rec-onciliation government and to avoid recriminations over the mil-itary’s brutal rule of the country.

But tensions have simmered between the NLD and the military over the role of the enormously popular Suu Kyi in the govern-ment and the continued power of the military. — Reuters

Chinese court jails 4 over support to Hong Kong protestHONG KONG: A court in south-ern China on Friday jailed four activists who had publicly sup-ported Hong Kong’s pro-democ-racy Occupy Central movement and who had criticised the Chi-nese Communist Party on social media, a lawyer said.

Two of them, Xie Wenfei and Wang Mo, were sentenced to four-and-a-half years by the in-termediate people’s court in the city of Guangzhou after having been found guilty of “inciting subversion of state power”, their lawyer Chen Keyun told Reuters by telephone.

The Guangzhou Intermediate court declined to give any details of the charges or sentences when contacted by Reuters.

Chen said Xie and Wang had held up placards on a Guangzhou street in support of Hong Kong’s youth-led Occupy Central move-ment that saw tens of thousands block major roads for 79 days in late 2014 to pressure Beijing for full democracy in the Chinese-controlled city. “This does not constitute any illegal behaviour.

On the contrary, we think not

only were they not inciting sub-version to the state’s power, but they were actually safeguarding the state’s power,” said Chen.

He denounced the sentence, saying the men should be free to call for universal suff rage as a fundamental right.

Posted messagesThe pair had also openly posted messages on Twitter and Weibo criticising the ruling Communist Party and calling for an end to one-party rule.

Two others, Zhang Rongping and Liang Qinhui, were jailed for four years and one-and-a-half years respectively on similar charges.

They, too, had expressed sup-port for Hong Kong’s Occupy movement.

Their lawyers, however, weren’t reachable for comment.

Security was tight outside courthouse with a large number of police vans parked outside.

Foreign reporters and diplo-mats were barred from the court-room, one witness there told Re-uters. — Reuters

Group linked to Al Qaeda claims killing of blogger

DUBAI: A group affi liated with Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the killing of a liberal Bangla-deshi blogger this week, the SITE monitoring service said on Friday, citing a statement posted by the group online.

Ansar Al Islam, the Bangladesh division of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), said its members had carried out the at-tack as “vengeance” against blog-ger Nazimuddin Samad over Face-book posts.

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the authenticity of the message but SITE said the group had provided a link to its digital signature to verify it.

The 28-year-old was killed in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Wednesday by attackers wield-ing machetes, the latest in series of murders of secular activists by suspected militants.

The postgraduate law student was attacked as he was returning from a class at his university, po-lice said. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahri announced the formation of AQIS in 2014 in a video posted online . — Reuters

Combatants strike deal to safely recover confl ict dead

BAKU: Azerbaijan and Armenian-backed separatists said on Friday they had struck a temporary deal to allow each side to safely search for the bodies of their soldiers killed in clashes over the breaka-way region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The warring parties agreed a ceasefi re on Tuesday - with Rus-sian help - after four days of shell-ing and artillery strikes which killed dozens. The truce has large-ly held, though both sides have re-ported some violations.

The violence prompted fears of an all out war in the strategi-cally-important South Caucasus through which Caspian Sea oil and gas is exported to world markets bypassing Russia.

On Friday, the Azeri defence ministry and the Nagorno-Kara-bakh defence ministry said they had sealed a deal to ensure there were no violations for a fi ve-hour period later in the day to allow both sides to search for their dead.

An offi cial at the Armenian de-fence ministry used social media to post the names and photographs of 44 separatist soldiers who he said were killed in the clashes since April 2.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was on Friday in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to hold talks with Ilham Aliyev, the Azeri president, aimed at resuming dip-lomatic eff orts to resolve the terri-torial dispute. — Reuters

More than 120 migrants sent back from Greece to Turkey

DIKILI (TURKEY): Two ferries carrying more than 120 migrants returned to Turkey from the Greek island of Lesbos on Friday, in the second round of arrivals under an EU deal with Ankara to stem mass migration to Europe across the Aegean Sea.

The accord, which came into force on Monday, aims to help end a chaotic infl ux into the European Union of migrants and refugees, most fl eeing war and poverty in the Middle East and beyond, after more than 1 million arrived last year.

Around 325 people have now been sent back from the Greek is-lands under the accord, which the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has condemned and rights advocates say may violate international law.

They are to be sent to a camp near Turkey’s border with Bul-

garia, to which the UNHCR said it had yet to gain access.

Pakistani menThe fi rst ferry on Friday carried a group of 44 Pakistani men, Tur-key’s interior ministry said.

Around two dozen uniformed Turkish police offi cers lined the

boarding plank after it docked in the Turkish town of Dikili, accom-panied by two coast guard vessels.

The second ferry, which arrived shortly after 12:30 p.m.(1030 GMT), carried 79 people, includ-ing migrants from Egypt, Afghani-stan and Iraq, a Turkish offi cial told Reuters.

There were no Syrians on either boat, the offi cial said, and the sec-ond group appeared to be almost all men, according to a Reuters reporter at the scene.

No boats are expected over the weekend, Turkish offi cials said.

Before the boat left Lesbos, at least two rights activists plunged

into the water close by, dangling from the anchor chain and fl ash-ing the ‘V’ for victory sign in an attempt to prevent the vessel from sailing. They were plucked from the water by the Greek coast-guard, while more activists stood at the gates of the port of Mytilene blowing whistles and banging on metal barriers. From Dikili, the migrants were to be sent to the border town of Kirklareli.

Access to campUNHCR spokeswoman Selin Unal said the agency was still ne-gotiating for access to the camp there. A fi rst group of 202 mi-grants, most from Pakistan and Afghanistan, arrived in Turkey on Monday. Turkey’s parliament approved overnight an agreement enabling Ankara to repatriate Pa-kistani migrants.

Meanwhile, other migrants continued to reach the Greek is-lands. Greek authorities said 149 had arrived in the past 24 hours on Lesbos, Samos and Chios, up from 76 the previous day.

Under the EU-Turkey agree-ment, Ankara will take back all migrants and refugees, includ-ing Syrians, who enter Greece through irregular routes.

In return, the EU will take in thousands of Syrian refugees di-rectly from Turkey and reward Ankara with more money, early visa-free travel for its citizens and progress in negotiations to join the bloc. — Reuters

Off shore trust admission deepens Cameron’s problemsLONDON: David Cameron had hoped to focus on campaign-ing to keep Britain in the EU be-fore a referendum in June, but questions about his wealth, gov-ernment spending and a steel crisis have blurred the prime min-ister’s message.

After four days and four dif-ferent statements over his late father’s inclusion in the “Panama Papers”, Cameron said on Thurs-day he once had a stake in his fa-ther’s off shore trust and had prof-ited from it, spurring calls for the leader to resign.

It is unlikely Cameron will fol-low Iceland’s prime minister and leave offi ce over the documents, which show how the world’s rich and powerful stash their wealth, but the blow to his im-age could hurt his campaign to

persuade Britons to stay in the European Union.

On Thursday, Cameron used a television interview to admit he had a holding in his late father’s Panamanian trust, Blairmore, but had sold it in 2010 before becom-ing prime minister.

“Of course I did own stocks and shares in the past - quite naturally because my father was a stockbro-ker. I sold them all in 2010, because if I was going to become prime minister I didn’t want anyone to say you have other agendas, vested interests,” he told ITV television.

“We owned 5,000 units in Blair-more Investment Trust, which we sold in January 2010. That was worth something like 30,000 pounds.” He underlined that he had paid tax on the dividends and on the profi ts, and said his father

had left him 300,000 pounds on his death. He also suggested he had not immediately detailed his aff airs because he had struggled with the critical coverage of his fa-ther, “a man I love and admire and miss every day”.

Cameron said the unit trust was not set up to avoid tax but to invest in dollar-denominated shares and he also promised to publish his tax returns. There is no indication that he or his father had done anything illegal, but by casting a spotlight on the Eton-educated Cameron’s wealth, the admission has fuelled a public perception that his Con-servative Party rules to protect the rich while punishing the poorest with its austerity push.

Opposition politicians said his initial reluctance to describe his fi nancial connections with his late

father after the Panama Papers were leaked on Sunday begged more questions of the leader, who has championed policies to reduce tax avoidance. “Far from being the end of the matter, the questions keep coming,” said Tom Watson, deputy leader of the opposition Labour Party.

“Did the prime minister know that this fund was linked to tax avoidance? If so, when, and if not, why not? Given that he claimed that “sunlight is the best disin-fectant”, why has it taken six years for this to come to light?” Calls for Cameron to resign trended on Twitter, with one user saying that if “Iceland can do it, I’m bloody sure the UK can too”.Others ac-cused him of hypocrisy for having used an off shore unit while calling for an end to tax avoidance. — Reuters

Paris attacks suspect arrested in Belgium

BRUSSELS: Mohamed Abrini, wanted over November’s IS at-tacks in Paris, has been arrested in Brussels, Belgium’s public broad-casters said on Friday, adding that he was probably involved in last month’s Brussels bombings.

Public prosecutors confi rmed in a brief statement only that police had made several arrests related to the Brussels attacks. Abrini, a 31-year-old Belgian, was “more than likely” the “man in the hat” seen on security camera footage at Brussels airport on March 22 with two suicide bombers, VRT and RTBF said on their websites, cit-ing unidentifi ed sources.

If confi rmed, the arrests could mark a success for Belgian securi-ty services which have faced fi erce criticism at home and abroad since Brussels-based militants or-ganised the attacks that killed 130 in Paris on November 13.

They took place a day after po-lice issued new images and detail on the “man in the hat” and follow the arrest in Brussels three weeks ago of the prime surviving suspect in those attacks.

Four days after the March 18 arrest of Salah Abdeslam, with whom Abrini was seen driving to-wards Paris two days before the Paris attacks, brothers Brahim and Khalid El Bakraoui and a third lo-cal man Najim Laachraoui killed 32 people at Brussels airport and on a metro line running under EU institutions. — Reuters

Rohit’s Mumbai to face Dhoni’s Pune as Indian jamboree begins

MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians are all set to open the defense of their title against new outfi t Rising Pune Supergiants, led by India’s World Cup winning skipper Ma-hendra Singh Dhoni, here tomor-row after decks were cleared to hold the opening IPL game by the Bombay High Court.

The court has declined to grant a stay on the IPL’s opening match tomorrow in Maharashtra, many parts of which are facing severe water crisis

The IPL has temporarily been shorn of two successful teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajas-than Royals, who have been sus-pended for two years as per the Lodha Committee recommenda-tions. The Supergiants, owned by RPSG Group, has thus been grant-ed an opportunity to carve out a niche — guided by the previously successful combine of captain Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming for CSK.

However, with a more settled look and familiar with the condi-tions at the Wankhede Stadium, described by both MI captain Ro-hit Sharma and coach Ricky Pon-ting yesterday as the team’s for-tress, Supergiants will need to pull out all stops to stop the home side.

The hosts, who turned around a disastrous start last year after los-ing the opening four games, have the right personnel on paper to dif-fuse the challenge from RPS.

Lendl Simmons, who orches-trated the bounce-back of MI last season, has shown his penchant for the Wankhede track with a blis-tering knock for eventual champi-ons West Indies that knocked pre-tournament favourites India out of the World T20 at the semifi nal stage on March 31.

Simmons and Sharma, who has decided to open the innings, are expected to pair up at the top with people like Ambati Rayudu, new buy and England’s hard-hitting wicketkeeper batsman Jos Buttler, Corey Anderson, the big-hitting

Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya to follow up later.

MI would be hard-pressed to fi ll in the void left by the absence of the injured pace spearhead La-sith Malinga who is unlikely to be fi t at least for the fi rst half of their league campaign, as informed yesterday by Ponting at his media conference. The vastly improved Jasprit Bumrah will need to step up and give adequate support to the likes of Anderson, Tim South-ee, Mitchell McClenaghan and Marchant de Lange.

In spin, MI will bank immensely on their experienced off spinner Harbhajan Singh. The feisty sard-

ar, ignored by the Indian think-tank right through the WT20 cam-paign although he was part of the 15-strong squad, would be eager to show his mettle against Dhoni and company.

Supergiants, on the other hand, appear to have a strong batting line-up with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Kevin Pietersen, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh and Fran-cois du Plessis present in it, along with Dhoni.

They have a good set of all-rounders such as Albie Morkel and Irfan Pathan and a good mix of pace and spin in the bowling at-tack which is expected to be led by

Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin respectively.

The mini-battle between off -spin rivals Ashwin and Harbhajan should also liven up the contest.

Australian leggie Adam Zampa is also there to be called upon along with Ashwin’s Tamil Nadu team-mate Murugan Ashwin, who is also a wrist spinner, and left arm slow bowler Ankit Sharma of Madhya Pradesh. The key for the Super-giants will be about how fast and how well they can jell as a team.

Rising Pune Supergiants: M S Dhoni (Capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Jaskaran Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin,

Ankit Sharma, Albie Morkel, Irfan Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Ishwar Pandey, Thisara Perera, Saurabh Tiwary, R P Singh, Ra-jat Bhatia, Ankush Bains, Baba Aparajith, Murugan Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Deepak Chahar, Scott Boland, Peter Handscomb, Adam Zampa.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (Capt), Lendl Simmons, Parthiv Patel, Kieron Pol-lard, Ambati Rayudu, Hardik Pandya, Harb-hajan Singh, Corey Anderson, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jos Buttler, Unmukt Chand, Marchant de Lange, Siddhesh Lad, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Tim Southee, Jag-adeesha Suchith, R Vinay Kumar, Krunal Pandya, Nathu Singh, Akshay Wakhare, Ni-tish Rana, Jitesh Sharma, Kishore Kamath, Deepak Punia. - PTI

Mumbai can cope with Malinga’s absence: BondMUMBAI: Although handi-capped by the absence of their pace injured spearhead Lasith Malinga, who may miss the en-tire IPL season 9 commencing in Mumbai on Saturday, title hold-ers Mumbai Indians are quite confi dent that there are others capable of stepping into the Sri Lankan’s shoes.

“The (franchise) owners and (head coach) Ricky (Ponting) have done a good job in recruiting a couple of fast bowlers in the side. So we have cover for him. If he ar-rives fi t, he will surely fi t into our squad. If he doesn’t, we have good cover for him,” said MI’s bowling coach Shane Bond ahead of the team’s opening game against new outfi t, Rising Pune Supergiants.

“Nothing changes, like in any injury, that is the depth of the squad. When it comes to IPL dur-ing the course of time, there were 16 players, so you cannot rely on one player,” added Bond over Ma-linga’s injury-forced absence at least for the fi rst half of the round robin stage. Malinga, who played

a major rule last year by taking 24 wickets in 15 games in MI’s mem-orable come from behind run to the title for the second time, has hurt his knee and was unable to be the bowling spearhead for his country, Lanka, in the World T20 that concluded on April 3.

Yesterday Ponting had also confi dently said that there were adequate replacements if Malin-ga is ruled out of the entire season 9 of the T20 league.

“If you look at last season when we were playing our best cricket, Malinga was bowling at his best, as well. He’s been one of the great performers in world cricket with the new as well as the old ball. He will be defi nitely missed, but we have more than adequate replace-ments if he’s ruled out,” the for-mer Australia captain said yester-day at his media conference.

Bond, similar to Ponting, hailed the improvement shown by young seam bowler Jasprit Bumrah since the last season when he was coming back from a serious knee injury. - PTI

Mustafi zur wants to play IPL with an ‘open mind’

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s pace sensation Mustafi zur Rahman is approaching his fi rst year in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with an “open mind”.

The young seamer is not set-ting himself a specifi c target but is not worried about his partici-pation in the lucrative Twen-ty20 tournament, starting April 9, reports bdnews24.com.

He just wants to perform well and pick up a wider range of skills. Mustafi zur will be play-ing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad who face the Royal Challeng-ers Bangalore in their opening match on April 12. “What is there to think about? I really don’t think much about anything. Just go, play and bowl - that’s it,” Mustafi zur said on Wednesday.

Bangladesh crashed to four successive defeats in the Super 10s of the World Twenty20 last month. Mustafi zur, who joined the team in the second match of the round after recovering from an injury, shone bright with nine wickets in three matches. Hy-derabad franchise mentor V.V.S. Laxman saw the youngster in action when he burst onto the scene in the One-Day series against India in June last year.

The former India batsman had his eyes on Mustafi zur since then as the Sunrisers managed to sign him up in the auction by outbidding the Bangalore fran-chise earlier this year. Laxman, also a professional commenta-tor, has always praised Mustafi -zur from the commentary box. He and Mustafi zur, however, did not cross paths during the showcase event in India.

“I am not really good in ei-ther English or Hindi, maybe that’s why we did not meet up,” Mustafi zur said. — IANS

MUMBAI: A glitzy mix of Bol-lywood razzmatazz and high-octane performances, including that of West Indian cricketer Dwayne Bravo’s smash-hit rap ‘Champion dance’, marked a glittering opening ceremony which set the ball rolling for the ninth edition of the IPL here on Friday night.

The two hour and 15 minute long event was less spectacular as compared to the previous editions but the cine stars still managed to put up an entertain-ing show, enthralling the gath-ering at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Stadium at the National Sports Club of India here.

Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh, Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez and Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh kept the audience glued to their seats during the opening gala at-tended by the BCCI top brass, franchise team owners, players and support staff of all the eight

participating teams. The crowd at the indoor

stadium enjoyed every bit of Bravo’s much-anticipated ‘champions dance’.In white blazer and black trousers, Bravo, a part of the West Indies World Twenty20 winning team, swayed to his ‘Champion dance’ as the fellow cricketers and

crowd cheered him.Bravo also danced to an-

other number ‘Chalo Chalo’ and was joined on the stage by Bollywood playback singer Ankit Tewari who sang an Indian version of ‘Champion’ — ‘Hindustan Mein Bade Bade Champion.

Like earlier opening ceremo-

nies, the cricket segment was short and limited to only the oath taking ceremony by the skippers of the eight teams.

Indian team Director Ravi Shastri ushered the eight cap-tains to sign the MCC Spirit of Cricket pledge for fair play.

Zaheer Khan (Delhi Dare-devils), Suresh Raina (Gujarat Lions), David Miller (Kings XI Punjab), Gautam Gamb-hir (Kolkata Knight Riders), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Rising Pune Supergiants), Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore), David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) took the MCC Spirit of Cricket pledge one by one.

Bowling one no-ball doesn’t make me a villain, says Pune’s Ashwin

MUMBAI: India off -spinner Ravi-chandran Ashwin on Friday said that he should not be made a vil-lain for bowling one of the two no-balls which proved to be a crucial factor in India’s World Twenty20 semifi nal loss to the West Indies.

Ashwin’s was one of the no balls which gave Man of the Match Lendl Simmons a reprieve and helped him anchor West In-dies’ successful chase of a stiff target of 193 at the Wankhede Stadium here.

“The day I went back home my dog had heat stroke. He had fi ts. It just showed me what is more im-portant and what is very very im-portant in life. I did not turn up a piece of paper for next three days. I haven’t read about what people had said,” Ashwin said ahead of his new franchise Rising Pune Super-giants’ opening IPL game against title-holders Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

“There have been good enough journalists and knowledgeable people who said I had not bowled a no-ball for ages and to have bowled one no ball, I don’t become a vil-lain. If that’s the perception I don’t know how to counter that,” the bowler said at a media conference.

Ashwin was widely castigated in the media for bowling a no-ball - being a spinner - off which he had Simmons caught at point, only for the batsman to escape on 15 and play a match-winning innings that knocked India out of the World T20 nine days ago.

Ashwin took umbrage when a scribe asked him how he felt bowl-ing with the wet ball because of dew, as the West Indies inched closer to India’s total.

“When there was dew I did not bowl. It’s better you ask someone who actually bowled, to be very honest. I don’t know how it felt with the dew on. It’s very amus-ing because with the fi rst 12 balls I bowled, I created a wicket oppor-tunity as well,” he retorted.

Asked further that it was cap-tain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who had said at the post match media conference that the dew had af-

fected his team’s bowling attack, Ashwin answered, “I don’t know what the captain said.”

At the end of the conference, Ashwin confronted the journalist who asked him about the dew fac-tor to fi nd out the publication he represented.

“I am not blaming you. But you should be responsible about what you write as millions of people read it and form an opinion,” said the player to the non-plussed correspondent.

Dhoni had blamed dew and the two no-balls bowled by Ashwin and then Hardik Pandya, who too had Simmons caught off a foot in-fringement after the batsman had

reached 50, squarely for his bowl-ers’ poor display in his post-match media presser.

Dew Factor“You have to realise it was half an hour early start. A bad toss to lose. So, when they started batting the fi rst few overs were fi ne, but af-ter that there was a considerable amount of dew which meant the spinners couldn’t bowl how they would have liked to,” Dhoni had said.

“It was coming on nicely and the ball was getting wet, so that was the diff erence between the fi rst innings and second innings. The surface had some assistance for the spin-ners, it was gripping (when India

batted), but in the second innings there wasn’t much in it for them. It was quite diffi cult to score 190 (bat-ting fi rst),” were Dhoni’s words.

Looking forward to playing for a new franchise under Dhoni who had captained him and the sus-pended Chennai Super Kings for eight years, Ashwin said he had been waiting for the new challenge.

“It’s a fresh start, it’s a new team for me and it’s going to be a new challenge which I had always been looking forward to. It’s very impor-tant to get into the new environ-ment, see how much you can get better and add value to the team. It’s very exciting and I am looking forward to it.”

Conceding that it was a bit diffi -cult for the Indian squad’s players to plunge into the IPL following back-to-back campaigns in the Asia Cup and World T20, Ashwin said the diff erence was that the T20 league was very fast-paced.

“It’s going to be diffi cult, no hid-ing it. It’s going to be taxing - men-tally and physically. The thing with IPL is it’s very fast paced.

“If you get in and if you try and beat your own odds and try to look for improvements during this time, it’s going to help you as a cricketer and hold you in good stead throughout the year,” said the off -spinner.

According to Ashwin, T20 crick-et has changed a lot over the last year or two with batsmen becom-ing more aggressive right through the inings and it was important for teams like India to be abreast of where it was heading.

“In general I think T20 cricket has gone a notch up over the last year or two. The game has defi -nitely evolved and it’s very impor-tant to keep an eye on how much it has evolved.”

He also mentioned the last over six-hitting heroics of West Indian Carlos Brathwaite that knocked out England’s hopes in the WT20 fi nal at Kolkata.

“When you saw the last over in the (WT20) fi nal, Carlos Brathwaite (of West Indies) just came in and smashed it (ball for four consecutive sixes). It’s get-ting into a zone, into a power game. People are not holding back and are going through from the fi rst over to the 20th over.” —PTI

Stokes keen to move on from Brathwaite beatingLONDON: England all-rounder Ben Stokes says he was left dev-astated by his last over horror show in the World Twenty20 fi -nal against West Indies and has yet to watch a re-run of Carlos Brathwaite hitting him for four straight sixes. The 24-year-old, who had earned plaudits for his ef-forts in the last over of England’s semi-fi nal win over New Zealand, was tasked with bowling the fi nal over on Sunday in Kolkata with the West Indies needing an unlikely 19 from it to win.

But Brathwaite slugged Stokes’ fi rst four deliveries for giant six-es to give the West Indies their second World Twenty 20 title and leave the Englishman on his haunches looking close to tears.

“I thought, ‘I’ve just lost the World Cup’. I couldn’t believe it,” Stokes was quoted as saying by British newspaper The Daily Tel-egraph on Friday. “I didn’t know what to do. It took me so long to get back on my feet. I didn’t want to get back up. It was like the whole

world had come down on me. There weren’t any good things go-ing through my mind. It was just complete devastation.”

Stokes, who had given up just three runs in the fi nal over against New Zealand, said he was still confi dent of closing out victory against the West Indies even after Brathwaite had clubbed his fi rst two deliveries over the rope.

“After the fi rst six I thought, ‘Oh God’, but I was backing myself. I

had been in that type of situation for four weeks in all my train-ing so it was not a case of holding anything back and thinking I hope I get this one in, because I knew I could do it,” Stokes said.

“I haven’t watched it back yet because I don’t want to bring my-self to do that at this stage so I don’t know how much I missed it by but as a bowler you have a feel-ing as soon as you let go whether or not you have got a yorker right and it felt like I had.”

Stokes was subject to ridicule in New Zealand, and two radio pre-senters were suspended after they broadcast a conversation with his mother on air as she tried to defend her son. Stokes said despite the ex-perience in the fi nal he would not be shirking the responsibility of bowling at the death again.

“Some days they go well. Some days they don’t,” he added. “That was a bad day but I won’t be shying away from it. You almost want it to happen because if you nail it every-one forgets (the fi nal).” - Reuters

Narine’s bowling

action cleared,

relief for KKR

DUBAI: West Indian Sunil Narine’s action has been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following reme-dial work and retest and the off -spinner can now resume bowl-ing in both international and domestic cricket events world-wide, the development coming as a shot in the arm for Indian Premier League (IPL) outfi t Kolkata Knight Riders.

The ICC confi rmed Narine’s action has been found to be le-gal barely two days before the start of IPL where he plays for KKR. At the retest, it was re-vealed that the amount of elbow extensions in Narine’s bowl-ing action for all his deliveries that were tested was within the 15-degree level of tolerance per-mitted under the ICC regula-tions for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions. The umpires are free to report Narine in the future if they believe he uses a suspect action. — PTI

Iran to sell crude below Saudi priceTEHRAN: Iran ratcheted up its off ence in the oil market after breaking a pricing tradition, sign-aling it’s seeking to win market share at a time when rival produc-ers are trying to forge a deal on freezing output.

State-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) will sell the Forozan Blend crude for May to Asia below the level off ered by ri-val Saudi Aramco for Arab Medi-um, the third month the Gulf state is giving discount after setting it at a premium for seven years through February 2016, data shows.

NIOC will also sell the Iranian Light grade to Asian customers at 60 cents below Middle East bench-mark prices, a company offi cial said on Friday, asking not to be identi-fi ed because of internal policy.

While producers including Saudi Arabia, Opec’s biggest mem-ber, and Russia are due to meet in Doha on April 17 to discuss a deal to freeze output in a step toward clearing a global glut, Iran is deter-mined to regain market share lost over the past few years due to sanc-tions over its nuclear programme.

To pry away customers relishing oil that is cheaper than mid-2014 levels by more than 50 per cent, the Gulf state is expected to focus on pricing and boosting supply.

Oil discounts“Unquestionably, since the lift-ing of sanctions, the Iranians have become a force to be reckoned with in global oil markets,” said John Driscoll, chief strategist at JTD Energy Services, who has spent more than 30 years trading crude and petroleum in Singapore. “Their mission is to recapture market share, pure and simple.”

NIOC will sell the Forozan Blend in May for Asian customers

at $2.43 a barrel below the average of the Oman and Dubai benchmark grades, according to the company offi cial. That’s 3 cents lower than state-run Saudi Aramco’s price for the similar Arab Medium variety for a third month, data shows. Foro-zan was at a premium of 7 cents to the Saudi oil for February sales.

Output freezeThe Iranian Heavy grade will sell in May to Asia at a discount of $2.60 a barrel to the Oman-Dubai average while the Soroosh vari-ety’s price was set at $5.65 a barrel below Iranian Heavy, according to the offi cial.

Saudi Arabia has said it will only freeze output if it’s joined by other suppliers including Iran, while Kuwait has signaled a deal doesn’t hinge on the Gulf state.

Iran, meanwhile, plans to boost production to 4 million barrels a day by the end March 2017, accord-ing to the nation’s Shana news ser-vice, which cited Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh.“The re-emer-gence of Iran as a viable exporter post-sanctions will challenge the prevailing status quo within Opec,” Driscoll said. – Bloomberg News

Ten Indian IT fi rms to take part in Comex

MUSCAT: Ten Indian informa-tion technology companies will participate in a technology ex-hibition in Oman to enhance IT trade cooperation between the two countries. The exhibition is sched-uled to be held from April 12 to 16 at the Oman International Exhibi-tion Centre.

Electronics Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), Middle East said 10 Indian IT companies will be exhibiting at the 26th Inter-national IT, telecom and technol-ogy exhibition ‘Comex 2016’

The Indian companies will be part of India pavilion, which indi-cates the growing interests of the Indian companies in the Middle East region.

The ESC has been facilitating Indian Information and Commu-nications Technology (ICT) ex-porters participation regularly at Comex to enhance IT trade coop-eration between India and Oman market, the council said in a state-ment on Thursday.

Business ventures“Since Comex attracts business acumen not only from Oman but also from all the Middle East and North African countries along with Asian and Europe countries, this eventually provide good plat-form and opportunity to interact and strike meaningful business ventures,” director of ESC, Middle East Kamal Vachani said.

“India has a great stake in the booming Middle East, Africa, Asia and European markets. Thus the event provides the participating Indian IT companies opportuni-ties for scouting the expanding burgeoning entries Middle East market,” he said.

The Middle East is one of the fastest growing ICT markets in the world, executive director of ESC, D. K. Sareen said. “High growth prevails across all segments, and the market is driven by economic diversifi cation and various e-government initiatives including fi nance, communications, and manufacturing,” he added. - PTI

T E C H E X H I B I T I O N Middle East airlines log 11% growth in February

Times News Service

MUSCAT: Middle East airlines passenger demand increased 11.3 per cent in February compared to the same period a year ago, accord-ing to International Air Transport Association (IATA). This was ex-ceeded, however, by a 16.9 per cent rise in capacity that caused load factor to drop 3.7 percentage points to 73 per cent. Traffi c growth has now lagged capacity growth for six consecutive months.

International passenger de-mand in February rose 9.1 per cent compared to February 2015, which was an increase over the 7.3 per cent yearly increase recorded in January. Airlines in all regions recorded growth.

Total capacity climbed 9.9 per cent, causing load factor to slip 0.6 per cent percentage points to 76.6 per cent, said the IATA global pas-senger traffi c results.

“In the fi rst two months of 2016, demand for passenger connec-tivity is off to its strongest start in eight years. However, Febru-ary was the fi rst month since the middle of 2015 in which capacity growth exceeded demand, which caused the global load factor to decline. It is unclear whether this signals the start of a generalised downward trend in load factor, but it bears watching,” said Tony

Tyler, IATA director general and chief executive offi cer.

European carriers saw February demand increase by 7.7 per cent compared to a year ago. Traffi c has recovered following disruptions in the 2015 fourth quarter related to airline strikes and the shutdown of Transaero in Russia.

Asia-Pacifi c airlinesAsia-Pacifi c airlines’ February traffi c rose 11.2 per cent compared to the year-ago period. Compari-sons with 2015 are distorted by the timing of the Lunar New Year celebrations, which took place in February this year. Slower eco-nomic growth in many of the re-gion’s economies has been at least partly off set by the 7.3 per cent increase in the number of direct airport connections within the region, which has helped to stimu-late passenger demand.

North American airlines’ traffi c

climbed 3.6 per cent, which was the slowest among the regions and was exceeded by a capacity expansion of 4.8 per cent. In turn, this caused load factor to fall 0.9 percentage points to 75.9 per cent. United States airlines have been focusing on the larger and more robust domestic market, although that market is showing signs of slowing in recent months.

Latin American airlines saw February traffi c jump 10.4 per cent compared to February 2015. Domestic passenger demand re-mains under pressure from eco-nomic diffi culties in the region’s biggest economies, but this seems not to be aff ecting business-relat-ed international travel.

African airlines posted the strongest demand growth among the regions with February traffi c up 12.7 per cent compared to a year ago. The pick-up indicates that carriers here are regaining market

share through eff orts to rational-ise networks and enhance revenue management systems, after sever-al diffi cult years. It also aligns with a jump in exports from Africa.

Domestic sectorIn the domestic sector, travel de-mand rose 7.9 per cent in Febru-ary compared to February 2015, which was an increase over growth of 6.9 per cent in January. All markets except Brazil showed growth, with the strongest in-creases occurring in India, the US and China. Domestic capacity climbed 9.0 per cent, and load fac-tor fell back 0.8 percentage points to 79.7 per cent.

India led all domestic markets again with a 24.6 per cent year-on-year growth, supported by the strong economic backdrop, as well as notable increases in services. This trend is expected to continue with fl ight frequencies in 2016

scheduled to increase by 11.5 per cent year-on-year.

“On March 22, we had a grim reminder that transportation— including aviation — remains a target for terrorism. The attacks in Brussels were an attack on hu-manity — a terrible tragedy — that was met with resilience. The sub-way is back in operation. And the airport is working hard to return to normal operations that will re-connect Europe’s capital with the world. Aviation is a force for good. And we are once again proving that terrorists will never succeed in de-stroying the fundamental urge of people to travel, explore and learn about the world,” said Tyler.

Vivendi to buy Berlusconi’s pay-TV unit in swap deal

MILAN: Vivendi agreed to ac-quire Mediaset’s pay-TV unit as part of a broader alliance to chal-lenge Rupert Murdoch’s Sky in Europe, according to people famil-iar with the matter.

The Paris-based media com-pany reached an accord with Sil-vio Berlusconi’s Mediaset that may be announced after a meeting of Mediaset’s board, which was scheduled for Friday in Milan, said the people, who asked not to be identifi ed since the matter is con-fi dential. Under the proposed deal, Vivendi and Mediaset will acquire stakes of about 3.5 per cent in each other, said the people.

Mediaset shares rose as much as 2 per cent in Milan and were trad-ing 1.9 per cent higher at €3.39. Vivendi gained 0.4 per cent in Par-is on Friday.

The stake in Vivendi is valued at about €874 million ($994 million).

Since Vivendi’s market value is more than six times higher than Mediaset’s, the Italian company will make up the diff erence by giv-ing Vivendi its 89 per cent stake in a pay-TV business called Pre-mium. Telefonica of Spain, which owns about 11 percent of Premi-um, will also sell its stake to Viven-di as part of the accord, possibly for cash, the people said. – Bloomberg News

Aramco share sale could raise $106 billion for Wealth Fund RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s sover-eign wealth fund could receive $106 billion in cash from the sale to the public of a 5 per cent stake in oil giant Aramco’s parent com-pany, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI).

“Suitable investors in Aramco could be long-term institutional investors such as the Canadian pensions, or even Asian sovereign wealth funds,” the Las Vegas-based consultant and researcher said in a report released on Thursday. “If an Aramco deal goes through, it could be a blueprint for other Saudi state-owned entities to fol-low, thus potentially increasing the cash pot of the Public Invest-ment Fund (PIF) while enlarging domestic markets.”

The kingdom’s Public Invest-ment Fund, which will eventually control more than $2 trillion of assets once the government trans-fers its ownership of Aramco to the fund, was set up in 1971 to fi nance development projects that would help make the country less de-pendent on oil.

The listing of Aramco, or Saudi Arabian Oil Company, may hap-pen as soon as 2017, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said last week in an interview. Transferring Aramco to the PIF would technically make invest-ments the source of government

revenue, not oil, Prince Moham-med said.

Enterprise valueThe SWFI calculated the enter-prise value of the Saudi Arabian Oil Company based on $10 barrel of oil. Assuming that the money raised from the sale of a stake in Aramco is invested by PIF and not used by the government to fund the budget defi cit, about 60 per cent of the cash would probably be allocated to fi xed income and the remainder to equities with some of the management outsourced, SWFI wrote.

“This would be a rich opportu-

nity for asset managers,” the Sov-ereign Wealth Fund Institute said.

PIF already holds about $87 billion worth of stakes in local companies including Saudi Ba-sic Industries Corporation, the world’s second-biggest chemicals manufacturer, and National Com-mercial Bank, the Middle East’s second-largest lender.

In July, PIF acquired a 38 per cent stake in South Korea’s Posco Engineering & Construction for $1.1 billion.

That month it also agreed to a $10 billion partnership to invest in Russia with the Russian Direct In-vestment Fund. – Bloomberg News

P U B L I C O F F E R US interest rate hike is on track, says Fed’s Yellen

NEW YORK: United States economy is on a solid course with some hints of infl ation so the Fed-eral Reserve is on track for fur-ther interest rate hikes, Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen has said in a defence of her decision to tighten policy late last year.

In a rare spectacle, Yellen spoke on a New York panel alongside her three predecessors who ran the world’s most powerful cen-tral bank. She said that, seven years after the brutal fi nancial crisis, the US labour market was now ‘close’ to full strength, again arguing that infl ation would not be held down much longer by the strong dollar and low oil prices.

“The US economy has contin-ued to progress in a satisfactory way. We continue to see good job performance, some evidence of infl ation moving up, so that was our expectation when we raised rates in December,” she said at the International House, a New York non-profi t residence for students.

“So yes, there is accommoda-tion in the monetary policy that we have. But we think the gradual path of rate increases will be ap-

propriate,” Yellen added. “We re-main on a reasonable path and I don’t think December was a mis-take.” The Fed raised its bench-mark policy rate in December, the fi rst increase in nearly a dec-ade, to between 0.25 per cent to 0.5 per cent.

Ben Bernanke and Paul Volcker joined the current Fed chair at the conference, and Alan Greenspan appeared via teleconference screens next to the stage. Be-tween the four of them, they ran the Fed for a third of its 102-year history. This included Volcker’s taming of the 1970s runaway in-fl ation, and Greenspan’s 18-year run of relative economic stability and fi nancial deregulation that ultimately led to the 2007-2009 Great Recession.

In a casual moderated discus-sion, they expressed a remark-able amount of agreement over

each other’s varied handling of the economy. They also agreed that China’s growing prominence posed more opportunity than threat, and that fi scal policymak-ers should step up more to sup-port the Fed’s economic stimulus.

A hot topic for the panelists was the US election campaign, in which Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has lambasted the central bank for helping to stoke asset bubbles. “I certainly wouldn’t describe this as a bubble economy,” Yellen said, noting a “healing” labour mar-ket in which unemployment is 5 per cent, or about where the Fed

Potential suitors AT&T and Comcast have decided against bid-ding, some of the people said, ask-ing not to be identifi ed as the dis-cussions aren’t public. Microsoft, which failed with a hostile bid for Yahoo in 2008, won’t bid this time, another person said.

Time is still evaluating a bid, while private equity funds Bain and TPG — among others — are also planning to make a run at the business, either alone or by back-ing a strategic acquirer, the peo-ple said. While the buyout fi rms haven’t yet paired themselves with a strategic buyer, they are open to the idea of doing so, the people said.

First-round bids for the compa-ny’s main Web assets are due April 11, a person with knowledge of the matter said last week. Shares of Yahoo Japan jumped 6.4 per cent in Tokyo, the biggest gain in almost three months. Yahoo shares fell 1.3 per cent to $36.17 in New York.

Three banksVerizon and its subsidiary AOL

is working with at least three fi -nancial advisers on the Yahoo bid, said three of the people. Hiring so many banks is a sign that Verizon is serious about its takeover plans — it has said since late last year that it was interested in buying some or all of Yahoo.

Verizon, which has a market value of about $213 billion, could

give the Yahoo Japan stake to its shareholders or sell it, one of the people said.

Sunnyvale, California-based Ya-hoo would prefer to sell its 35.5 per cent stake in Yahoo Japan, worth about $8.5 billion, along with the core business, Bloomberg reported last month.

The valuation of the combined assets would make it more diffi cult for private equity fi rms to fi nance a bid for both parts.

Representatives for Yahoo, AT&T, Comcast, Time, TPG and Verizon declined to comment. Representatives for Bain and Google didn’t immediately re-spond to requests for comment.

Revenue dropBased on the fi nancial informa-tion that it’s seen, Verizon values Yahoo’s core business at less than $8 billion, one of the people said. Verizon, as well as some private equity fi rms, met with Microsoft last month to talk about potential funding for a bid, people familiar

with the matter said at the time.Microsoft hasn’t committed any

funding and is unlikely to provide anything more than a token invest-ment to the winning bidder, one of the people said. A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment.

Still on deckYahoo’s projected revenue will drop almost 15 per cent and earn-ings by more than 20 percent for 2016, according to a slide deck it released to potential bidders, Re/code reported on Wednesday. Veri-zon would replace Yahoo chief ex-ecutive offi cer Marissa Mayer with AOL chief executive offi cer Tim Armstrong and Marni Walden, Verizon’s executive vice president, who would run a combined Yahoo and AOL, two of the people said.

Japan’s SoftBank has always had tepid interest in buying Ya-hoo, two of the people said. So far, discussions have centered around Yahoo Japan, in which SoftBank is the majority shareholder, paying a reduced licensing fee to Yahoo.

The two sides are in active dis-cussions to lower this fee, which stands at three percent of gross revenue, before any deal to sell Yahoo is announced. Yahoo Ja-pan has argued the fee is too high because Yahoo hasn’t invested in technology the Asian company can use, causing the brand to suf-fer, one of the people said. A repre-sentative of SoftBank declined to comment.

Yahoo said it would explore stra-tegic alternatives, including sell-ing its main Internet operations, earlier this year after scrapping a long-time plan to spin off its valu-able Asian assets. The company’s stock has declined about 20 per cent in the past 12 months as turn-around eff orts led by Mayer stalled and sales have sagged. - Bloomberg News

Britain launches criminal inquiryinto Tata SteelLONDON: Britain has launched a criminal inquiry into the work-ings of Indian giant Tata Steel, which is seeking to sell its loss-making UK businesses, accord-ing to a media report on Friday.

According to The Daily Tele-graph, police offi cers are examin-ing allegations that staff working for the company’s offi ce in Brit-ain may have falsifi ed certifi cates detailing the composition of its product before sale.

Tata Steel is believed to have referred itself to the Serious Fraud Offi ce (SFO) after an inter-nal inquiry at its Yorkshire site in northern England.

The SFO said that it was ‘de-clining to comment’ on the mat-ter at this stage. Tata Steel has also not commented on what they have termed as “media spec-ulation” so far.

The newspaper quoted “well-placed sources” saying that the documents being examined af-fected 500 customers, including global giants like BAE and Rolls-Royce. A Rolls-Royce spokesper-son said: “We were made aware of an issue by Tata last year. We have not been contacted by the SFO and cannot comment on any investigation.”

The SFO inquiry is understood to centre around certifi cates that are produced to verify the com-position of steel. Auditors found

material that suggested inappro-priate testing and certifi cation may have occurred.

At least nine employees of the fi rm have been suspended. There is no suggestion that the informa-tion on the certifi cates has led to any safety concerns, the newspa-per reports. A trading standards in-vestigation in also ongoing, but it is unknown whether they are linked.

UK steel industryThe news comes against the backdrop of a major crisis in the UK steel industry after Tata Steel announced its plans to sell off its loss-making units in the coun-try. UK business secretary Sajid Javid fl ew down to Mumbai ear-lier this week to hold talks with Tata chairman Cyrus Mistry in an attempt to fi nd a solution that would help save the nearly 15,000 jobs on the line.

It is believed a deal to save Tata’s Scunthorpe plant can be reached as early as Monday with UK-based investment fi rm Grey-bull Capital. Meanwhile, Indian-origin tycoon Sanjeev Gupta has stressed that his Liberty Group has the resources to rescue the fi rm’s other units.

He will be in Scotland for the offi cial handover of two Lanark-shire plants previously owned by Tata Steel, which his fi rm had ac-quired last year. - PTI

Boeing lands$1.5b orders for 747 jumbo jets

CHICAGO: Boeing landed four new orders valued at $1.5 billion for its 747 jumbo jetliners, giv-ing life to a programme starved for sales amid waning demand for four-engine aircraft.

The orders were reported on Boeing’s website and the identity of the customer wasn’t disclosed. The United States planemaker also reported that it delivered few-er jetliners than a year earlier as it navigates transitions for two long-range aircraft: the hump-nosed 747 and the 767.

The new sales provide a much-needed lift for the 747-8, the lat-est model in a jetliner family that debuted in 1970 and ushered in an era of aff ordable long-range travel for the mass consumer market.

Last year Boeing netted only two orders for the aircraft, which have a $379 million list price. The com-pany has repeatedly slowed the 747 assembly line, most recently to an output of six jets a year, as the order book thinned. Boeing had 23 unfi lled jumbo orders as of March, although the tally includes two planes already built for defunct Russian carrier Transaero Air-lines that are in storage.

Quarterly deliveriesThe planemaker handed off 176 jetliners to customers in the fi rst quarter compared with 184 a year earlier, according to a Boeing statement. Total orders rose to 139 from 116.

Boeing and Airbus are planning to speed production of their nar-rowbody jets while simultaneous-ly introducing upgraded versions, a diffi cult juggling act for the com-panies as they each roll the aircraft out of factories at a rate of 42 a month. Investors closely monitor deliveries to gauge revenues since the bulk of payments are handed over at that time. – Bloomberg News

Hong Kong, which for years rode a wave of cheap capital and China’s economic boom, is as vulnerable now as it was before the 1990’s Asian fi nancial crisis

as those drivers reverse, according to analysis by Daiwa Capital Markets.

In a bearish take on the fi nancial hub, Daiwa forecasts “enormous stress” ahead as money heads out amid a global US dollar debt delev-eraging, China’s economy slows and currency weakens, US interest rates increase, and domestic property pric-es slump.

“If the Asian fi nancial crisis was preceded by a classic credit and hous-ing bubble, we see another one now of a bigger scale,” the Daiwa analysts led by Kevin Lai, chief economist for Asia excluding Japan, wrote in a note. “Money infl ows have been unprece-dented; we expect this money to leave eventually on the back of global dollar debt deleveraging.”

“Measures of macro and fi nancial vulnerability indicate things are no better now than they were just before the Asian fi nancial crisis,” the broker-age said. It is not the fi rst time that Lai has warned on Hong Kong. In recent months, the Daiwa economist has highlighted vulnerabilities as the Fed keeps open the option of further rate increases after hiking in December for the fi rst time since 2006.

Currency pegBecause Hong Kong’s currency is pegged to the dollar, the former Brit-ish colony eff ectively imports US monetary policy. Rising US interest rates increase the cost of servicing US dollar loans taken out in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong was hit hard by the Asian fi nancial crisis that started in Thailand in 1997 and spread across the region, forcing the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to spend HK$120 billion buying up Hong Kong stocks and to use its foreign-currency reserves to defend the dollar peg. House prices tumbled 70 per cent.

This time around, Daiwa assumes the HKMA would “defend the peg at all costs,” eroding the monetary base and setting the stage for debt-defl a-tion. In contrast to orthodox think-ing, Lai says Hong Kong’s “sizeable reserves” are actually an indication of weakness, and the fact that the cur-rency is pegged prevents a natural currency mechanism.

Hong Kong’s outlook has dimmed as exports fall and big-spending Chi-nese tourists stay away, prompting an increasing number of analysts to turn cautious on the $300 billion economy because of its exposure to China’s slowdown. Moody’s Investors Service last month lowered Hong Kong’s long-term debt outlook.

Retail sales in February plunged the most since 1999 as fewer Chinese tourists visited the city during the Lu-nar New Year holiday.

Chinese visitors are projected to fall 3.2 per cent for the year, accord-ing to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, with average spending dropping 4 per cent.

Lai’s forecast for gross domestic product to slip towards recession ter-ritory this year is an outlier. A median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg tips growth of 1.7 per cent this year and 2.1 per cent in 2017.

Market recoveryAnd after an initial slump at the start of the year, the Hang Sang Index has rallied, the city’s dollar has rebounded from the weak end of its trading range, and interbank borrowing costs have tumbled after spiking in January.

But that calm may not last long. Ac-cording to Daiwa’s analysis, the global deleveraging process ”has probably started, or at least could be about to begin,” and the fi rst “real test” for Hong Kong could come in the second half, with pressure set to build next year, according to Lai.

“The world outside the US is about to embark on a major dollar debt de-leveraging process. As that happens, Hong Kong can be expected to come under enormous stress.” – Bloomberg News

Telephone, doorknob,

remote control: The risk in plain sight

Doorknobs, telephones, light switches, and remote controls come into human contact several times a day, but rarely come into contact with a cloth. But viruses can sur-vive on this type of surface for around

24 hours and other types even longer, so disinfection is key here. A dab

of vinegar on a cloth is perfect to combat the potential

threat.

Dishwasher: Incubator for mouldIn cosy warmth and moisture, dangerous bacteria feel safe and can, when not removed, can cause some infl ictions on you.

First, take out removable items — the racks, the salt and fl uid caps, the fi lter, and the rest. Then wipe the inside with a fresh sponge and vinegar.

Don’t forget to clean the fi lter: There you can always fi nd leftovers of food in it. Then fi ll a cup of vinegar into the capsule compartment, and allow the machine to rinse empty at the highest temperature you have (don’t forget to put back the stuff you took out).

Freezer: Bacteria frozen in timeTwo thirds of all food poisoning originate from the fridge or freezer’s walls and most bacteria only ‘hibernate’ but don’t die at low temperatures. Therefore, sort all your food in insulated bags when stocking your freezer, as a precautionary measure.

To clean it, turn it off , remove bottom shelf and place some towels inside to soak up the water, close the door and let it defrost overnight.

You can sterilise the freezer with a cloth soaked in vinegar cleaner and so freed from the fi nal dormant bacteria.

PLACES YOU DIDN’T CLEAN

Mattress: We never sleep alone There is an average of 1.5 million mites living in our bed. So don’t forget

to give it extra attention in the cleaning. Beat the dust out and vacuum the mattress and leave it in a nice, dry place to air out for a few hours. You should

take care of your mattress frequently, to prevent the buildup of moisture and skin that attracts mites in the fi rst place.

Don’t forget: You should have a look under the bed now and then too, to make sure that no dust and wool remnants have appeared.

Oven hoods: Out with the fatOven hoods absorb odours and are also a magnet for fat. If we don’t remove, it will clog-up and make the cleaning eff ort a lot more diffi cult, not to mention the danger of a fi re hazard.

You can clean it in the dishwasher: Place the fi lters horizontally in the top compartment and run it empty to avoid food residues in the fi lters.

If you have to clean the hood manually: Place the fi lters in the sink, fi lled with a double dose of washing up liquid. Leave them to soak, scrub with a brush, and then clean again.

Don’t forget the inside of the cooker hood: Get rid of the fat and dry with a cloth. Use 100% cotton towels to dry it, as they will be lint free. -Helpling

Washing machine: Wash its dirt away

The centrifugal drum always looks so spotless after each

wash, but if not cleaned from time to time, it can lead to bad smelling of the clothes even after washing them. Also dirty clothes leave their dirt somewhere — in the drum. To clean your washing

machine: Put 50g of baking soda directly into the drum

and 50ml of vinegar essence in the top compartment. Wash

at 60 degrees for a fresh smelling washing machine. You can also get the dispenser clean with a sponge and tap water. Do not forget also to remove the lint and hairs in the rub-ber that fi ll the machine.

It’s that time of the year when you are getting ready

to make your house shine. However, there are many

places that urgently need a cleaning but remain hidden

from us at fi rst glance

Tile joints: Free of mouldBathtub, sink, and toilet fl oor: The normal routine to clean the bathroom. However, we easily overlook other places like the tile grouting; on which mould can grow all too quickly. To clean it you can use the Tea Tree Oil. It’s antibacterial and kills mould. Dip a cotton swab in the oil and coat the aff ected area, generously. After half an hour, this miracle cure will have banished the fungus and your joints will radiate again.

LIFESTYLEFACT FILE

(Exploring History, Science, and Nature) Ancient Art of Writing

Writing is one of the most important inventions of all time. The writ-

ten word has allowed people from around the world to recall and ex-change ideas, stories and helped in trade. Before paper was dis-covered ancient writers wrote on other materials. Wood was one of the earliest writing materials and could be inscribed or written on in ink. In Egypt papyrus was used made from the stem of the papyrus plant. Another commonly used tool for writing was wax tablets. Since they could be easily erased and reused, they were convenient to use.

Among the writing instruments one that has been there since an-cient times is the quill pen. Made out of bird feather quill pen was introduced around 700 AD. Feath-ers of goose, swan, crow, eagle, owl, hawk, peacocks, and turkey were used to make these pens. There were many disadvantages of writ-ing with a quill pen; the most was its poor longevity. It only lasted for a week or so. While quill pens were used in Western countries, Reed pens were used by the ancient Egyptians to write on papyrus.

Fountain pens were developed in the 19th century that had a nib and a chamber to store ink. But

with the advent of computers, some people believe that writing by hand is rapidly becoming a lost art. The introduction of comput-ers and smartphones ushered in an era of emails, instant messages and texting. To a large degree, typ-ing has replaced handwriting.

CalligraphyWhile calligraphy is an ancient art of decorative writing one can still learn modern calligraphy. Nowa-days we see examples of calligra-phy on invitations or on important documents and certifi cates. To do a basic calligraphy you can buy kits with a variety of calligraphy pen nibs and fi ne paper. Since you would be using a sharp knife chil-dren should be accompanied by an adult.

Materials needed• A hollow feather • Jar of ink• Craft knife • PaperHow to do• Take a craft knife and cut off

the tip of the feather at an angle.• Cut the tip to make a fl at edge

and cut a slit through the centre.• Dip your pen in ink and begin

to write, keeping the pen at an even angle. [email protected]
