• Jean Jacques Roussueau recognizes children as having different modes of thinking that adults.– Children learn through hands-on experiences

Preschool Invented!

• The first presumed school to teach preschool-age children was established by Johann Pestalozzi in 1801

1873

• The first public school Kindergarten was established in St. Louis.

1907

• Maria Montesorri opens Children’s House in Rome

1926

• NAEYC is created! This community of educators and childhood specialists has now been around for 86 years.

1932

Children and Young Persons Act introduced supervisions to children at risk.Strengthened child protection laws

1946

• Reggio Emilia philosophy was introduced by Loris Malaguzzi in Italy

1940-1955

• Jean Piaget pioneered constructivist theory of knowledge. – Psychologist who developed models of

development and has been key in understanding children’s minds

Head Start

• In 1964, Head Start had a $96.4million dollar budget and included 561,000 during a summer program. – Now services over 900,00 with a budget of $6.8

billion!

1996

• The Children’s Bill of Rights was written and signed.– Was written to so that all children can grow up

free from abuse, thrive in the world, and participate in influencing the shape of their future.

2002

• NCLB- George W Bush proposed this act and it was supported by both parties in Congress.

• Was intended to raise standards in American schools and make schools accountable for their students’ achievements
