Newsletter Edition 23 u 17th August 2017 Time to Celebrate - Again! Great results are not a product of some random chance in an evolutionary process of learning. Outstanding National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results are a product of direct quality strategic teaching, parent encouragement/ support, student effort and focus, comprehensive curriculum, data analysis and ongoing planning. Our results are a testimony of the dedication of our teachers, parents and students who work conscientiously from Foundation to Year 12. The NAPLAN test results are just a small-time snapshot of the team effort in Learning and Teaching. We can be proud of our students at Nunawading Christian College - Primary and Secondary and take a moment to celebrate. Enjoy a moment in time of pure sweet success. The graphs are a positive reflection of the outstanding results of our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in 2017. Analysing the data from the graphs it is easy to see that we have a wide range of abilities amongst our students. Our aim is to work with every student in each class. We provide support for students who are experiencing difficulties to extending students who need a bit more of a challenge. Each year we encourage all students to sit the NAPLAN test regardless of ability. The results reflect that even our weakest students are well above state average and our strongest students are off the NAPLAN scale. Good news? NO Great NEWS! Can we do better? Yes, but not much better. Where can you go when the NAPLAN scale ends, eg Year 3 Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Numeracy? In the next year our Primary challenge is to make writing a focus, to have writing matching the other subjects – nearing the top of the NAPLAN scale. Writing is probably the most difficult one to improve, as good writers are not only good readers, spellers, grammar users, but also creative thinkers who are able to effortlessly put their thoughts into words. Challenge for 2017 and 2018! Start thinking and writing. Let’s Celebrate the great results! Time to Celebrate - Again!Great results are not a product of some random chance in an evolutionary process of learning. 100 is a local art exhibition profiling Melbourne’s centenarians through portraits created by skilled young artists. The project is about bringing the community together through inter-generational interactions.

Stephanie and Ashtyn are two NCC students who have been selected to take

part in the exhibition and have recently met and sketched their subjects.

Last week, we travelled with Ashtyn as she met her subject Jodie Carr for the first time. Jodie was full of stories, sharing about old friends, her family and her own personal artwork which now decorates her small unit. Ashtyn

completed her first sketch of Jodie and will return for a few more visits before completing the final painting.

trivia NightSATURDAY

28th October - Save the

date! Home & School is holding an adult-only event for all NCC

parents and friends. The Trivia Master for the night will be

none other than our own Mr Tee - so book a babysitter and keep

an eye out for more details coming up in future newsletters.

Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students traveled back in time to experience life at Como House this week. They all agreed that being a child of a wealthy family, living in the 1900’s, would be fun. There were games to play, like croquet and tug-of-war, in the large garden and servants to do things for you – all you had to do was ring a bell and they would come. However, the boys weren’t too keen to find out that little boys wore dresses until they were five! The girls didn’t like the idea of wearing dresses all the time. Children also had to learn how to dance and remember a whole heap of rules and manners. Being a servant wasn’t much fun either. It was hard work of cooking, serving, washing clothes outside, cleaning chamber pots and answering the bells rung by the family. We think being a child in the 2000’s is the best option!

Updated Secondary Mobile Phone Policy

The Secondary School has a very simple Mobile Phone policy that was adopted at the start of this year: Students are not to use their mobile phones during school hours without a teacher’s explicit permission.

The policy remains unchanged, but we have reviewed the process that takes place when a student does not follow the Secondary Mobile Phone Policy.

If students use their phone without permission, the school will follow these steps:

1st incident: the teacher will take the mobile from the student, enter the incident on SEQTA and return the phone to the student at the end of the lesson.

2nd incident: the teacher will take the mobile from the student and hand it to staff in the office. They will label it with the student’s name, put it in the safe, enter the incident on SEQTA and contact the parents to let them know this has happened. The student can pick the phone up at the end of the day.

3rd incident: as above, but the student must leave their phone in the office every morning for the next week.

4th incident: taken to Behaviour Management Committee.

Combined Schools Day of WorshipWith students representing Primary and Secondary Campuses of metropolitan ASV schools crowding into the NCC gymnasium for two days of worship and fellowship, the atmosphere was electric. Around 800 students filled the gym with noise and expectation each day. The annual Combined Schools Day of Worship event gathered Primary students on Thursday August 10 and Secondary students on Friday August 11 to worship, share testimonies and be drawn towards a living Jesus. Our speaker, Simon Gigliotti (VICYouth Associate Director), shared personal stories as well as challenges from the word of God exploring the theme of Testimony: everybody has a story.

This year it was NCC’s turn to contribute items and drama to the program, while Heritage College

shared worship music and Gilson Taylors Hill were hosts. Edinburgh College and Gilson Mernda shared a great diversity of drama to music, and spoken words. But a highlight again were the stories told by students across the spectrum of age, background and experience about the presence and power of Jesus Christ in their lives. Our service focus was ADRA’s partnership with Afri-Aus supporting refugee teens in adjusting to life in Australia.

Delicious lunches were prepared and distributed by wonderful volunteers among the NCC parent family - we extend our warmest thanks to this happy army of helpers. Over $2,500 was raised, which will contribute to the work of NCC Home and School.

Karen and Lili would like to give

affirmation to all the students who represented NCC on both days - especially Arya and Nathan for their testimonies, and give a public expression of our gratitude to all NCC students for their open, friendly and respectful behaviour in welcoming so many to their school and hosting them in our community. It is wonderful to be able to meet together to worship and be together.

Parents, you might have heard feedback from your children. We’d love to hear about their thoughts (or yours!) - please feel free to get in touch with Karen Horsley (Primary) or Lili Panozzo (Secondary). We’re looking forward to next year, getting ready to plan the 2018 CSDW with the ASV Chaplaincy team.

Happy Birthday Jenny and Heather

July has been a month of ‘milestone’ birthdays! We’ve had two staff members whom God has blessed with reaching special birthdays:Mrs Michaelson turned 50 and Ms Woodhouse turned 60. At NCC we love to help our staff celebrate memorable occasions in their lives, as being part of the school community is a ministry that each one plays a vital role in.

Year 5/6 Poetry CafeOver the past few weeks, the year 5/6 classes have been learning about poetry in writing sessions. Last week a poetry cafe was held to give all students the opportunity to recite one

of their poems to the class. The mood was set with a dim room, cookies and hot chocolate with marshmallows. Here is a selection of student poems.
