TimeCapsuleoffersyouthesimplicityoffullyautomatedbackupforyourWi-Finetwork.UsingtheTimeMachineapplicationinMacOSXv10.5.7Leopardorlater,it’seasyandautomatictobackupallthecomputersonyournetworktoasingleTimeCapsule.

TheTimeCapsuleisalsoafullyfeaturedAirPortExtremeBaseStationthatprovidessimultaneousdual-bandwirelessnetworking.WhenyousetupyourTimeCapsule,itcreatestwohigh-speedWi-Finetworks:

 A2.4gigahertz(GHz)networkfor802.11b,802.11g,and802.11ndevices,suchasiPhone,iPodtouch,andoldercomputers

 UsetheTimeMachineapplicationinMacOSXv10.5.7(orlater)tobackupallthecomputersonyourwirelessnetwork,aswellascomputersconnectedtoyourTimeCapsuleusingEthernet.

Note:  YourfirstbackupwithTimeCapsuleandTimeMachinecouldtakeovernightorlonger,dependingonhowmuchdatayou’rebackingup.Tospeeduptheinitialbackup,useanEthernetcabletoconnectyourcomputertotheLANportonyourTimeCapsule.FormoreinformationaboutusingTimeMachine,see“UsingTimeMachinewithYourTimeCapsule”onpage24. Createapassword-protectedwirelesshomenetwork,andthenconnecttotheInternetandsharetheconnectionwithothercomputersandWi-Fidevices,suchasiPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.Youcanalsosharefilesamongcomputersconnectedtothenetwork.

 Createaguestnetwork,withorwithoutpasswordprotectiontoprovideInternet-onlyaccesstowirelessdevices,suchascomputers,iPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.

 ConnectyourTimeCapsuletoyourEthernetnetwork.Wireless-equippedMac,WindowsXP,WindowsVista,orWindows7computerscanthenhaveaccesstoanentirenetworkwithoutbeingconnectedbyacable.

 ConnectasupportedUSBprintertoyourTimeCapsule.CompatiblecomputersontheAirPortnetwork,bothwirelessandwired,canprinttoit.

 ConnectanadditionalUSBharddrivetoyourTimeCapsule.CompatiblecomputersontheAirPortnetwork,bothwirelessandwired,canaccessinformationontheharddisk.

Important:  UseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourTimeCapsule.PreviousversionsofAirPortSetupAssistantandAirPortAdminUtilityarenotcompatiblewiththisTimeCapsule.

AirPortUtilityisinstalledintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonacomputerusingMacOSX,andinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.IfAirPortUtilityisn’tinstalledonyourcomputer,youcandownloaditfromwww.apple.com/support/airport.

AppleperiodicallyupdatesAirPortsoftware.It’srecommendedthatyouupdateyoursoftwaretokeepyourTimeCapsuleuptodate.

Plugging In Your Time CapsuleBeforeyoupluginyourTimeCapsule,firstconnecttheappropriatecablestotheportsyouwanttouse:

 ConnecttheEthernetcablethat’sconnectedtoyourDSLorcablemodem(ifyouwillconnecttotheInternet)totheEthernetWAN(<)port.

 ConnectaUSBcableconnectedfromtheUSB(d)portonyourTimeCapsuletoacompatibleUSBprinter(ifyouwillprinttoaUSBprinter),aharddisk,orahub.

 ConnectanEthernetcablefromanyEthernetdevicetotheEthernetLAN(G)ports.

Afteryou’veconnectedthecablesforallthedevicesyouplantouse,connectthepowercordtothepowerportandplugyourTimeCapsuleintoapoweroutlet.Thereisnopowerswitch.

Important:  UseonlythepowercordthatcamewithyourTimeCapsule.

WhenyouplugyourTimeCapsuleintoapoweroutlet,thestatuslightflashesgreenforonesecondandthenglowsamberwhileyourTimeCapsulestartsup.AfteryourTimeCapsulehasstartedupcompletely,thestatuslightflashesamberuntilyourTimeCapsulehasbeenupdatedwiththecorrectsettings.ThestatuslightglowssolidgreenafteryourTimeCapsuleisproperlysetupandconnectedtotheInternetoranetwork.

WhenyouconnectEthernetcablestotheEthernetports,thelightsabovethemglowsolidgreen.

Off YourTimeCapsuleisunplugged.

Solid amber YourTimeCapsuleiscompletingitsstartupsequence.

Flashing amber YourTimeCapsulecan’testablishaconnectiontothenetworkortheInternet,orisencounteringaproblem.MakesureyouhaveinstalledAirPortUtilityanduseittogetinformationaboutwhatmightcausethestatuslighttoflashamber.See“IfYourTimeCapsuleStatusLightFlashesAmber”onpage29.

Solid green YourTimeCapsuleisonandworkingproperly.IfyouchooseFlashOnActivityfromtheStatusLightpop-upmenu(intheBaseStationpaneofAirPortsettingsinAirPortUtility),thestatuslightmayflashgreentoindicatenormalactivity.

Flashing amber and green Theremaybeaproblemstartingup.YourTimeCapsulewillrestartandtryagain.

Ifyou’reusingyourTimeCapsuletoconnecttotheInternet,youneedabroadband(DSLorcablemodem)accountwithanInternetserviceprovider(ISP),oraconnectiontotheInternetusinganexistingEthernetnetwork.IfyoureceivedspecificinformationfromyourISP(suchasastaticIPaddressoraDHCPclientID),youmayneedtoenteritinAirPortUtility.HavethisinformationavailablewhenyousetupyourTimeCapsule.

CreatingaNewWirelessNetworkYoucanusetheAirPortUtilitysetupassistanttocreateanewwirelessnetwork.Thesetupassistantguidesyouthroughthestepsnecessarytonameyournetwork,protectyournetworkwithapassword,andsetotheroptions.

If you plan to share a USB printer or USB hard disk on your network:1 ConnecttheprinterorharddisktotheTimeCapsuleUSB(d)port.

2 OpenAirPortUtility,locatedintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonaMac,orinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.

3 SelectyourTimeCapsuleandclickContinue.

Ifyoudon’tseetheTimeCapsuleyouwanttoconfigure,clickRescantoscanforavailablewirelessdevices,andthenselectyourTimeCapsulefromthelist.

4 Followtheonscreeninstructionstocreateanewnetwork.

BeforeyouuseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourTimeCapsule,connectyourDSLorcablemodemtotheTimeCapsuleEthernetWAN(<)port.Ifyou’reconnectingyourTimeCapsuletoanEthernetnetworkthatalreadyhasInternetaccess,connectittotheEthernetnetwork.

TochoosethewirelessnetworkyouwanttochangeonaMac,usetheAirPortstatusmenuinthemenubar.OnacomputerusingWindows,holdthepointeroverthewirelessconnectioniconuntilyouseethenetworkname(SSID),andthenchooseitfromthelistiftherearemultiplenetworksavailable.

3 FollowtheonscreeninstructionstoconfigureandshareInternetaccessonyourTimeCapsule.

AirPortUtilityprovidesaquickandeasywaytosetupyourTimeCapsuleandnetwork.Ifyouwanttosetadditionaloptionsforyournetwork,suchasrestrictingaccesstoyournetworkorsettingadvancedDHCPoptions,chooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenuofAirPortUtility.

Whenyouallowaclientaccesstoyournetwork,theclient’snameandwirelessMACaddress(orAirPortID)arestoredintheaccesscontrollistofAirPortUtilityuntilyouremovetheclientfromthelist.Youcanalsoprovide24hoursofaccess,afterwhichtimetheclientcannolongeraccessyournetwork.

YourfirstbackupwithTimeCapsuleandTimeMachinecouldtakeovernightorlonger,dependingonhowmuchdatayou’rebackingup.Tospeeduptheinitialbackup,connectyourTimeCapsuletoyourcomputerusingEthernet.Ineachsubsequentbackup,TimeMachinebacksuponlyfilesthathavechangedsincethepreviousbackup,sothebackupsdon’ttakeaslong.

TimeCapsuleisagreatwirelessbackupsolutionforportablecomputers.Sincethefirstbackupcantakesometime,plugyourportableintoapoweradapter—thisconservesbatterypowerandguaranteesthatbackupswon’tbeinterrupted.Also,forthebestwirelessperformance,placeyourportablecomputerinthesameroomasyourTimeCapsule.

IfyoushutdownyourMacorputittosleepduringabackup,TimeMachinestopsthebackupandthencontinuesfromwhereitleftoffafteryourMacstartsupagain.
