• Having it All Presentation (5 minutes)

• In an effort to better understand girls’ level of financial literacy and their confidence, attitudes, and experiences with regards to money,

• the Girl Scout Research Institute conducted a survey with a nationwide sample of 1,000 girls ages 8-17 and their parents.

• This study reveals girls need and want financial literacy skills to help them achieve their dreams;

• with 90% saying it’s important for them to learn how to manage money. • However, just 12% of the girls surveyed felt comfortable about making financial

decisions.

• Girls see a future where they are financially independent, managing their own money and making decisions.

• Today’s girls have different vision for the future that is not the stereotype “housewife” role.

• They expect to be equal partners in both money management & childrearing.

So how can we help them get there? • 1st - we as adults need to have an understanding of Financial literacy not only in

our personal life but in our business life• 2nd - we must be willing to share this understanding with girls and other women

today

business in the world? • Did you know that the Girl Scout Cookie Program happens only once a year— and

for only 8–10 weeks? • Did you know that, in that short time period, the Girl Scout Cookie Program

grosses more than $700 million in sales? • And did you know that girls who participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program learn

and practice five valuable skills that will help them now and in the future? • Those 5 Skills are:

• Goal Setting• Decision Making• Money Management• People Skills• Business Ethics

• And by the way, all of the proceeds generated from cookie activities stay right here, in Orange County, to support Girl Scouting in our area.

• That includes the portion that goes directly to the troop selling the cookies.• Share a video – what adults need to know about the girl scout cookie program -

Encourage parents and volunteers to share their own examples.• Then say – “As you can see, girls learn a lot while having fun when they participate

in the Cookie Program. Let’s find out more about what they learn.”

• Look how a cookie can help! this is where we’ve been headed!

• All this together makes for a great experience for girls.

• No one piece stands on its own.

• Give everyone “The 5 Skills in Action” handout. Ƀ Allow five minutes for people to read the examples and possibly fill in answers to the questions.

• Then invite everyone to turn to those around them and share their hopes for how the 5 Skills will help girls succeed in the future.

• Ask for some “shout out” examples related to how each of the 5 Skills benefits girls—now or later in life. Will goal setting help her plan for college? Will money management help her save up for a destinations trip?

• The 5 skills can apply to fall product sales as well.

• This is what all volunteers can download from girlscouts.org.• The annual Cookie Pin focuses on the 5 skills for girls and can be

earned in addition to the cookie business badge or the financial

literacy badge.• What does the GGGS say about the cookie pin:• Cookie Activity pin: When you sell Girl Scout Cookies, you’ll get

better at all the skills involved in running a business. To earn this award,

take part in the cookie sale—then wear the pin to remind you of all you’ve

learned.

• Cookie Activity pin: When you sell Girl Scout Cookies,

you’ll get better at five key business skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making,

Money Management, People Skills, and Business Ethics. Plus, you are

taking part in the largest girl-run business in the world!

• By participating, you’ll be learning by doing—an important part of Girl

Scouting. Every time you reach out and network to find customers,

make a sales pitch, manage the orders and money, and make

decisions about how to use your earnings, you are learning about

everything that goes into running a major business.

• Notice that the five cookie business skills are handy not just for

running a business—they’re handy in life, too. Have a science project

coming up at school? Goal setting and planning will be useful. Need

to persuade your friends to do the right thing sometimes? Use people

skills! Trying to save up some of your babysitting earnings so you can

take a trip? That’s money management.

• The cookie sale also helps support Girl Scouting for you and millions

of other girls. Part of the proceeds goes to your council to keep Girl

Scouts thriving in your region.

• To earn this award, take part in the cookie sale—then wear the pin to

celebrate the skills you’ve gained!• As you can see, the older girls have a little more information about what they’ll

learn from the cookie sale and what it means.• Give everyone a copy of “The Girl Scout Cookie Activity Pin/Safety Tips” back-to-

back handouts. Ƀ • Say: Remember that girls who sell cookies can earn the Annual National Cookie

Pin. • This pin is a great way for them to take pride in the skills they’re building each

year—and it’s a great way for you to stay focused on coaching girls around the 5 Skills each year.

• When you read the steps for earning the pin, you’ll see that they are intentionally designed to engage girls and adults in actively thinking and talking about the 5 Skills they are “learning” as they are “earning.” Here’s a copy of the steps for earning the pin, plus a list of 10 important safety tips for girls.

• let’s TAKE A LOOK AT THE financial literacy and cookie business badges• These are still relatively new – and flexible enough to adapt to the changing world

of financial literacy (credit, online safety, cyber hacking etc.)• There is one Financial Literacy and one Cookie Business badge or leaf at each

grade level. • Daisy awards are called “leafs” while all the other levels are badges.• there are three awards each at the Cadette level because there are three years

spent as a Cadette.

13

Page 16: time and energy it takes to help girls sell cookies and we ... · important part of Financial Literacy!) • Girls can choose to earn badges in any order. Although there are loose

• Financial Literacy Badges = a complete, progressive curriculum for girls K-12!• The Cookie Business Badges are call “It’s Your Business – Run It!”• Those offer girls opportunities to apply their financial literacy skills to running their

cookie business.• (And by the way, the skills girls learn by running the Cookie Business are an

important part of Financial Literacy!)• Girls can choose to earn badges in any order. Although there are loose ties

between the financial literacy and cookie business badges, girls do NOT have to earn a financial literacy badge before earning a cookie business badge. We will give examples of these ties later in the webinar.

• Conceivably, the cookie business badge activities could be earned during another product sale, such as a fall product sale or in the case of USAGSO, where girls do not sell cookies, another money earning activity.

• Let’s practice coaching girls to get the most out of the cookie sale. • Of course, who is behind every girl who sells cookies and develops these 5 Skills?

An adult who helps her get the most out of participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program!

• Think for a minute about the times in your own life when you have learned something because you had to chance to actually do it…

• Encourage everyone to share an example of two with those sitting next to them. • Then say: For girls to really get the full benefit of the Girl Scout Cookie Program,

they need to “learn by doing” as much as possible for themselves. • We’re going to do a little role-play now to get into the spirit!

15

Page 18: time and energy it takes to help girls sell cookies and we ... · important part of Financial Literacy!) • Girls can choose to earn badges in any order. Although there are loose

• Give everyone the “Coaching Your Budding Businesswoman!” handout. • Then say: Turn to those near you, form groups, and have some fun! • Allow 10–15 minutes for the role-play exercise. • Then say: Did any of the scenarios sound familiar?

• What others can you think of? • What will you be ready to say and do in response, so that girls have a

wonderful experience?• Facilitate a discussion about why, as adults, we are sometimes tempted to step in

and speak for girls or do things for them they could do for themselves. • Try asking these questions: Do we start talking before they have a chance because

we are nervous for them? • What else might be getting in the way of more active girl participation? • What can we do to keep girls at the center of the action? • (Hint: the older girls are, the further on the sidelines adults can be!)

• Here are some tips for having a great experience.• Give everyone the “Tips for Helping Your Girl Scout” bookmark, the “5 Skills”

wallet card, and the “Creating Cookie Success” handout.• Say: This handout gives you practical tips for supporting and coaching your Girl

Scout. • If time permits: Invite parents and volunteers to brainstorm more ways to help. • You may want to make a list of their ideas, which you could post on your website. • Encourage parents and volunteers to keep sharing ideas and examples about how

to coach these budding businesswomen!

• Wrap-up• Say: Remember, these 5 Skills will help every girl be more successful, no matter

what future she chooses. • 5 Skills will help girls succeed when they’re ready to join the workforce. • Why? Because they’re leadership skills—and that’s the Girl Scout mission, to

develop girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

• Keep in mind the Big cookie picture – why it is critically important for girl to practice practice practice with the ready made cookie program 0 the public expects her to!

• This handout will show you how the 5 Skills are tied to the leadership benefits we offer girls, such as cooperation, team building, critical thinking, and problem solving. And how the Give everyone a copy of “The 5 Skills: Shaping Your Girl’s Future”

• All of this information is shareable with your parents – they need to know it’s not about quality of the cookie, it’s about the quality of the girls – that is why we do this!
