Better performance and stronger financial returns than traditional distributed generation As renewable, distributed generation increases, it must be integrated with storage, automated demand response, building efficiency and other balancing technologies to achieve both optimal local performance and provide services and support to the larger macrogrid and ISO/RTO. This has the dual benefit of overcoming the technical barriers of high-volume penetration of intermittent renewables while also opening up new revenue streams and improving project returns. TimberRock’s Pico-GridsTM are autonomous microgrids that can be as small as a single building or as large as a small campus. Each is managed by sophisticated Distributed Energy Management & Aggregation (De-MAP) software that allows the Pico-GridsTM to be managed as single block of energy capacity. These larger blocks of capacity are called Multi-GridsTM. Like the traditional PPA, Pico-GridsTM can be deployed via third-party finance and kWhs are provided to the system host or off-taker. However, in addition, a plurality of Pico-GridsTM when aggregated in Multi-GridsTM have the ability to react in seconds – in very flexible ways – to the needs of the macrogrid. The speed and flexibility of Multi-GridsTM allows them to secure additional revenue streams by providing various ancillary services to the grid operators, participating in whole sale energy markets and providing distribution-level support, such as providing VAR compensation to the local utility. These additional revenue streams can provide stronger project returns than traditional PPAs.
