Call for Submissions: FLOW Literary and Art Magazine

Artists and writers are asked to submit their best work to this year’s issue of FLOW (it’s “wolf” spelled backwards) no later than February 1st via Google Classroom (class code 85213y6). Local Guest Authors Visit

Creative Writing Classes

During the month of November, two local authors generously donated their time to speak to Creative Writing

students. Authors Paige Lavoie and Anthony Awtrey are members of Writer’s Atelier in Winter Park (https://writersatelier.com/), a

writing studio that provides editing, workshops, and events for writers. On Teach-In Day, November 15, 2017, author Paige Lavoie talked to

students about her writing process and self-publication. She gave tips to help motivate honors writing students participating in NaNoWriMo

(National Novel Writing Month) power through to meet their personal word count goals. Mrs. Lavoie’s novels include Confidence: Diary of an Invisible

Girl, and A Girl Called Monster, officially released December 15th. On Tuesday, November 28th, novelist Anthony Awtrey shared his insights

regarding writing in the fantasy genre, which Creative Writing 1 students have been studying in class. Mr. Awtrey’s works include Ragel’s Brood and Letting Go.

Are you a local author, or do you know one? Mrs. Dobson loves to have authors visit her writing students. Please e-mail [email protected] for details.

Naviance: A College and Career

Planning Tool OCPS purchased Naviance to help our student with their college and career planning. Each month in the scholarship newsletter the College and Career Center will focus on what students can do on Naviance for College and Career planning. Students can access Naviance through Launch Pad. Parents, you have access to your child’s Naviance account. If you did not receive your code to get on your child’s Naviance account, please email Colleen Hemann at [email protected] and she will send it to you. Below is a basic overview and we will go into more depth in the months to come. When students open Naviance, they will go to the Family Connection. There are four tabs at the top of that page. Here are a few things you will find on each of those tabs.

Colleges Students can see upcoming college visits to Timber Creek, complete the SuperMatch college search which is kind of like online dating with colleges, record colleges they are thinking about attending, record colleges that they are going to and much more.

Careers Students can explore careers, find career clusters that match the student interests and personal qualities and take a trip on the RoadTrip Nation which sends students on road trips to interview leaders who have built their lives around their interests.

About Me Students can take a variety of self-assessments like the StrengthsExplorer, Learning Style inventory and MI Advantage. They can start adding activities into their resume and enter their favorite colleges.

My Planner The most important thing in this tab is the Tasks Assigned to Me. When students open this tab, they will find assignments that the students are expected to complete during that school year. Get on Naviance and play around. It’s lots of fun and will help you plan your future!

AFJROTC Our goal in AFJROTC is to instill values into our cadets that will help impact our community in a positive way. Two weeks prior to the beginning of the school year, we invited incoming cadets to participate in our Drill Camp as a chance to meet their fellow peers, obtain their uniform items, and learn basic drill movements. During the school year, we’ve visited Avalon and Discovery Middle Schools to talk to the 8th graders about what JROTC is and all the benefits that come with joining the program next year when they enroll into high school. We’ve also had our annual Fall Field Day where all the cadets in our unit come together and compete against one another in various physical activities. Outside of school, our cadets have done a series of community service events such as tutoring students from Timber Lakes Elementary School and making meals for the families staying in the Ronald McDonald House by Nemours Children’s Hospital. We also were able to showcase our unit to the Avalon Park Community by leading Timber Creek High School’s Homecoming Parade. Additionally, our Drill Team competed in Mainland High School’s drill competition where they brought home 6 trophies, five of them being 1st place. Coming up on January 27th, we will be hosting our annual Wolf Pack Drill Competition, where other AFJROTC units from the state will come to Timber Creek to compete in a series of drill and color guard sequences. We will also visit Timber Springs Middle School on Wednesday, January 17 to talk to the 8th graders there about what AFJROTC is and all the benefits that come with joining the program when they go to high school.

Key Club Commits to Service in Every Season The TCHS Key Club has earned over 800 hours of community service at more than 50 club projects since the 2017-2018 Key Club year began in May of 2017. The Key Club is closed to new members from December 2017 through March 2018, but will begin accepting new members in April 2018 for the new Key Club year beginning in May 2018. On November 9th, the Key Club hosted “Project Behind the Scenes,” a luncheon to show appreciation to our school’s cafeteria personnel, custodians, and bus drivers. The project, led by Key Club project committee chair Candace Carmouche, was made possible by generous donations from local restaurants and businesses, including Publix, Eastside Bistro at Avalon Park, Walmart, Muddy Waters, Leland Management, and Sonny’s BBQ. Sydney Dixon, chair of Key Club’s Veteran’s Committee, led a committee of club members who put together appreciation packages for the teachers at Timber Creek High School who are veterans, and distributed these Nov. 10th. Other projects on note this year so far include sorting recyclables from trash at a home football game, hosting multiple dinners at two Orlando Ronald McDonald House locations, maintaining “The Key to the Closet” (a collection of over 200 free formal gown rentals for students), and mentoring students and assisting teachers at multiple elementary and middle schools in our area. There is something for everyone in Key Club! The Key Club has also assisted students in navigating the new community service guidelines and paperwork for Bright Futures.
