Tim’s CornerIt’s All AboutPerspective!
A few days before Sept. 11,2001, I moved to Arizona fromMinnesota. All of us have vividmemories of where we were onthat morning. I was with my 95year ‘young’ father and hiswonderful wife in Green Valley. Asthe extent of the horror unfolded,we learned of a terrorist agenda. When I moved into the world ofassisted living, I was surprised tofind so many residents who weredeeply depressed about terrorismand the world situation. Manyseniors said that the world wascoming to an end; that we had neverexperienced such madness. I wasdumbfounded by what I heard. Why? My father was born in 1906.Like many of you, he was part ofthe ‘Greatest Generation’. Whatsorts of sadness and tragedies havemost of you survived? Let’s see:WWI (began in August of 1914;over 16,000,000 died). Then inOctober of 1929, the stock marketcrashed and thus began the GreatDepression. That was followed byWWII, which started on Sept. 1,1939. The Holocaust andcollective loss of life exceeded50,000,000 people! So in 2001, Iwas surprised to hear so manyresidents who said that 9/11 was
the beginning of the end. This sortof evil has been part of mankindsince day one! Dwell on it and itleads to depression. Put it into itsproper perspective (as you did withWWI, WWII, the Depression, etc.)and life goes on positively!
My daughter was born in 1974.She had been left on the doorstepof a police station in the center ofKorea. We adopted her atapproximately 4 months of age.To this day, she has no knowledgeof anything related to her Koreanbirth parents (no awareness ofsiblings, parents, grandparents, genetic history or heritage). Doingthat to a baby could get anyonedepressed but she’s one of themost positive people I know. As alittle girl, Catherine’s favoritemusical was ‘Annie’ and herfavorite song was ‘Tomorrow’:
“The sun’ll come out tomorrow,Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrowthere’ll be sun!
Just thinkin’ about tomorrow,Clears away the cobwebs, And thesorrow, ‘til there’s none!
When I’m stuck in a day that’sgray, and lonely, I just stick out mychin and grin, and say,
The sun’ll come out tomorrow,So ya gotta hang on ‘til tomorrowCome what may!”In the midst of chaos, don’t you
agree that’s a pretty goodoutlook on life?!

Flu SeasonIt’s that time of year again, flu
season is around the corner. Thetiming of flu is very unpredictableand can vary from season toseason. Most seasonal flu activitytypically occurs between Octoberand May. In the United States, theflu most commonly peaksbetween December and January. The CDC recommends a yearly fluvaccine for everyone 6 months ofage or older as the first and most
important step in protectingagainst this serious disease. Peopleshould begin getting vaccinatedideally by October, to ensure thatas many people as possible areprotected before flu season begins. It takes about two weeks aftervaccination for antibodies todevelop in the body and provideprotection against the flu. Inaddition to getting the vaccine, you can take everyday preventativeactions like staying away from sickpeople and washing your hands toreduce the spread of germs. If youare sick with the flu, please stayhome to prevent spreading the fluto others.
If you do get sick with the flu, antiviral drugs which areprescription drugs can be used totreat flu illness. Treatment withantivirals works best when begunwithin 48 hours of getting sick, but can still be beneficial whengiven later in the course of illness.
