Justin's performance was low on energy and the worst part was he was lip-syncing to many of his songs." 1 MERI PYAARIBINDU

'Meri Pyaari Bindu': Frothy and engaging"Meri Pyaari Bindu" from the Yash Raj Films (YRF) stable is asincere yet frothy tale, designed from a pulp novel. And like anyother pulp fiction, this film is a light-hear ted fluff, racy andengaging. Designed as a catharsis, it is the tale of a successfulpulp writer Abhimanyu Roy aka Bubla, who has compilednovellas like "Chudail Ki Choli", "Dracula's Lover" and "DasCabin", among many more.On the insistence of his publisher, Abhimanyu is forced to writea romance, which he does begin but is stuck between his reallife hear tache and imagination. He finds it difficult to chroniclehis thoughts about this "unpredictable, impatient, imper fect, crazy, restless and larger than life, live-wire girl" called Bindu, who was once his neighbour and who over a period of timecrept into his life and soul. So, when Abhi returns home and stumbles upon an old audiocassette with their favourite playlist, it sends Abhi downmemory lane and his novel unravels speedily juxtaposing hispast and present. With a good dosage of old Hindi film songsand titbits as transitions, metaphors and analogies, thetreatment of the chaotically jumbled script along with thescreenplay, is astutely handled. The plot moves at a frenziedpace regaling the ecstasy and agony of Abhimanyu and Bindu.

While the plot is well-char ted, it is the conflict and theresolution that disappoint. It lacks substance in terms of oomphand other exploiting factors that make for engrossing viewing. The non-linear narrative style, at times, creates confusion withthe timelines. The dialogues too are wor th a mention and aredelivered with gusto. Ayushmann Khurana, with an intellectualdemeanour, plays the flurried pulp writer Abhimanyu Roy withpanache. With natural ease, he internalises his character andcommunicates his affection through his intense gaze. He issincere and endearing in his por trayal and it shows. On theother hand, Parineeti Chopra essays Bindu with dexterity yetshe seems super ficial and shallow, especially in the restaurantscene when she tells Abhimanyu about her boyfriend, Mathew. Her por trayal of the character lacks depth. The rest of the suppor ting cast is natural and have theirmoments of on-screen glory. Especially notewor thy is thecharacter who plays Abhimanyu's mother. Technically, the filmis well-mounted. The camera movements are fluid and the flowof the visuals seem uninterrupted with the skilful and smoothediting. The songs naturally integrate into the narrative. Overall, while the film is interestingly told and is engaging, the last scene, though it talks about a happy ending, unsettles the purist.

'SARKAR 3': RAM GOPAL VARMA RETURNSTO FORM, THANKS TO MR BACHCHAN

It is easy to see the third instalment of Ram Gopal Varma's "Sarkar"franchise as an unnecessary carryover of a saga that has lost its rel-evance and sheen. But "Sarkar 3" rises far above the wasteland of astagnant crime-drama to give us an insight into a life of outlawry that isrichly layered with blood and drama. Bal Thackeray is dead. Long liveBal Thackeray. In Amitabh Bachchan's persona --steely, gritty, imper-turbable, granite-hard and yet malleable and vulnerable -- the Thackeraydoppelganger is uncanny. The walk, the talk and the ability to walk thattalk to places where the dialogue writer would never have imagined.Take a bow, Mr B. They don't make em like you anymore. It takes courage to build one more plot around that formidable and impos-ing figure from Maharashtra's politics who rewrote the rules of politicsand who gave political arrogance a sexy edge. The last Sarkar film came9 years ago. And the figure of Subhash Nagre is now threatened withobsolescence, if not complete irrelevance. And yet here lies Varma's triumph. He manufactures a compelling ifsomewhat cramped and at times campy yarn of a wizened but still-spirited political outlaw who has no appetite for betrayal and disloyalty."In order to understand politics you first need to get a hang of the politicsin the family. It's called Palace politics," says Subhash Nagre, slurpingtea out of the plate while, please note, the grandson Shivaji (Amit Sadh inengaging form) also slurps over his cuppa.Lineage, continuity and perpetuity are big in "Sarkar 3". Outsiders areseen as traitors and marauders. In fact the film makes a pitch for nepo-tism in crime and politics arguing that absolute loyalty can only be tracedin the bloodline. In blueprinting this genealogical fact of clannish life, thenarrative stretches the tendons of its muscular drama into scenes thatare constructed robustly and at times with enrapturing vividness. There are some terrific shootouts in this film reminiscent of episodesfrom Ram Gopal Varma's best gangster films in the past. Parking lots area favourite haunt for violence in this film. Ram Gopal Varma seems to tell

us there's more to cars than Rohit Shetty. Indeed "Sarkar 3" marks thereturn to form for the long-disoriented filmmaker. He cuts and shoots thescenes in long shots and breathless pauseless frames that cover thedramatic tension without toppling over into overstatements.Manoj Bajpai joins the gang-war somewhere in the preamble and optsout too soon. He has some of the best lines on the criminalization ofpolitics. Sadly the script doesn't listen to Bajpai's harangue, busy as it ishero-worshipping the outlawed aging hero. Bajpai's one sequence withMr. Bachchan where Bajpai's character Govind Deshpande mocks Mr.Bachchan's Nagre from a public podium for subverting Gandhian idealsis worth its weight in gold. Of course Varma being Varma he does likeshooting his actors from odd angles, like Yami Gautam, who has neverlooked more seductive, captured from inside the handle of a teacup. Tea-hee. The women, Gautam, Supriya Pathak and Rohini Hattangadi get littlespace in this predominantly masculine war of supremacy. And that onescene where Hattangadi blows a kiss at her screen son would have youwhistling in excitement. The background score didn't have to be persua-sive, though. We get the point without the over-punctuation. Strangelyvery few people get killed in the course of the storytelling although thebody count seems a lot higher. And when archvillain Jackie Shroff, swim-ming and sexing in Dubai, dies at the end "that's not a spoiler, it's nem-esis", we feel a surge of empathy for the Nagre family that has lost a lotof blood, but never in vain. Watch "Sarkar 3" for the way Varma framesthe familial feud in flames of fury. The performances are largely effectivespecially those by Ronit Roy and Amit Sadh. The latter comes into his own as MrBachchan's uncontrollable grandson. But above all, this is one more triumphantcelluloid outing for Amitabh Bachchan who invests his role of the aging tiger-netawith a kind of cosmic resonance that goes way beyond that famous bari-tone. Yup, they don't make star-actors like Amitabh Bachchan any more.Ram Gopal Varma reminds us of the Bachchan charisma in ways that aredeeply nostalgic and exceedingly provocative.
