Tiger Reserves

• There are 50 tiger reserves in India, which are governed by Project Tiger which is administrated by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

• India is home to 80 percent of tigers in the world. In 2006, there were 1,411 tigers which increased to 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014 and 2967 in 2018.

• The Indian increase played a big role in driving up global populations as well; the number of wild tigers globally rose from 3,159 in 2010 to 3,890 in 2016 according to World Wildlife Fund and Global Tiger Forum

Tiger Reserves in Odisha

•Similipal Tiger Reserve (its name from the abundance of Semul or red silk

cotton trees)

•Satkosia Tiger Reserve - Mahanadi River passes through this TR, part of

the Mahanadi elephant reserve, meeting point of two bio-geographic regions

of India; the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats.

Telangana tiger reserves

Amrabad Tiger Reserve

• for first time re-introduced ‘mouse deer’ in the forests of Nallamalla in Amrabad Tiger

Reserve (ATR) bred at Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad.

•Dominated by the Chenchus tribe.

• It contains ruins of the ancient Nagarjuna ViswaVidyalayam run by the great Buddhist

scholar Nagarjunacharya (150 AD)

• largest tiger reserve in the country. Earler, it was part of 'Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger

reserve' but post-bifurcation, the northern part of the reserve is vested with Telangana state

and renamed as 'Amrabad Tiger Reserve’.

Kawal Tiger Reserve

•This sanctuary is catchment for the rivers Godavari and Kadam
