    Dear Mr. Keefe:

    A Tier 2/Stage 3 manual validation was performed on the mercury analytical data for 32 fish tissue samples collected by U.S. EPA Region I at the Nyanza Chemical site in Ashland, MA. The samples were analyzed according to Brooks Rand Labs BRL Procedure for EPA Method 1631E, SOP #BR-0002, Revision 10f, 3/7/14. The samples were validated according to the EPA New England Environmental Data Review Program Guidance, April 22, 2013, using first the criteria in the Final Sampling and Analysis Plan, Fish Sampling in Reservoir 2 ofthe Sudbury River, Nyanza Superfund Site, Fran1ingham, MA, Rev.#2, October 2014; then the EPA New England Environmental Data Review Supplement, April22, 2013, and the Brooks Rand Labs SOP #BR-0002, Rev lOf, 3/7114; and finally EPA Region I's Environmental Services Assistance Team Inorganic Data Review SOP ESAT -01-0081 (09/30/13 ).

    The data were evaluated based on the following parameters:

    * • Data Completeness * • Preservation and Technical Holding Times * • Calibrations * • Blanks * • Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicates * • Laboratory Duplicates * • PE Samples/Accuracy Check

  • Mr. Daniel Keefe PN: EPA-NC1401

    * -All criteria were met for this parameter.

    Overall Evaluation of Data and Potential Usability Issues

    The following is a summary of the site investigation/assessment objectives:

    March 3} 2014 Page 2

    • Determine if the mercury levels in the four fish species collected from the three lobes in Reservoir 2 (Reach 3) of the Sudbury River have changed from the reported levels in the past.

    • Ascertain the potential for human health and ecological risk.

    A Certified Reference Material Sample (DORM-4, Fish Protein Certified Reference Material for Trace Metals) from the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada KIA OR6 was utilized by the laboratory. For total mercury, the laboratory prepared and analyzed the CRM two times and reported percent recoveries of 101 %and 102%. These recoveries are within the recovery limits of75 to 125% specified in the Lab SOP.

    Data review indicated no data quality problems. The results reported on the Data Summary Table are usable for the site objectives.

    Sincerely,

    ~~-hemist &;:?-?? d.C' 4.--<
