October Plant Pick: Autumn Colour

For Autumn colour in your garden plant chrysanthemums, Michaelmas daisies, dahlias, autumn

crocus, Japanese anemones, hydrangeas, smoke bush, Japanese maples, grasses, Echinacea and

rudbeckia to name a few. Many annuals and perennials will continue to bloom right up until frost.

For more inspiration for Fall colour visit a

local nursery for ideas. Milner Gardens is well

worth a visit this time of year, but hurry as it closes

after Thanksgiving. Another interesting garden is

located at the Kingfisher Resort and spa in

Courtenay.

Submitted by Wendy Smith, Vancouver Island Master Gardener

I think Autumn is my favourite season. I look

forward to its warm days and cool nights.

Heavy dewy mornings help plants to put on a

flush of new growth at this time of year.

Lovely Autumn shades of red, orange, yellow,

rust and purple appear. Deciduous trees turn

beautiful colours and when their leaves fall

they make carpets of crunchy leaves under-

foot.

Towards the end of the month is a good

time to divide perennials, plant spring

bulbs, collect seeds of your favourite

annuals and plan next year’s garden.

SAILING TO THE BAHAMAS A Presentation by Gord Peterson

Mark your calendars for Friday, October 12th at 6:15 pm for a

presentation about Gord Peterson’s 6-week sailing trip to the Abacos area of the Bahamas, which he did in April and May of this year. He

sailed from south-west Florida through the Okeechobee Waterway from Fort Myers on the west coast to Stuart on the east coast, then south to West Palm Beach, on to West End, Grand Bahamas and the Abacos. Along the Waterway he had to deal with locks and bridge

openings to accommodate a 43-foot mast. He then crossed 56 miles of the open Atlantic to reach the protected and pristine waters of the Bahama Banks and the many cays making up

the Abacos region of the Bahamas. As you can imagine, the challenges were many, but what an achievement!

There is a sign-up sheet posted in the Beach Club.

Bring a beverage and come along to share the adventure.

October’s book is

“The Lightkeeper’s Daughter”

by Jean Pendziwol.

The next meeting is October 15th at 1pm

in the Four Seasons Lounge.

Smartphone Holiday Photos Workshop When: Monday, October 22 Cost: $55 Time: 1 - 3 pm Place: Conservatory in the Beach Club

You're on holiday in a stunning location and finding the photos you're taking don't match what is before you. It's disappointing because you really want good photos to be able to look back on and to share with your family and friends. I understand and can help you. During the hands-on two hour workshop you will easily learn fundamental landscape composition and lighting skills that will bring your Smartphone photographs to the next level and make you happy. Pre-registration and payment are required by October 15 for the workshop.

Professional photographer, Debbie Flynn of Debbie Flynn Photography, teaches Smartphone workshops in the Oceanside area. And her Smartphone Photography workshops are being offered in the current Active Living Guide through the NRD. Class size is limited to 6 – 8 participants to offer more personalized coaching.

To register, please contact Debbie directly at [email protected]. Class fees can be submitted to the Beach Club office by cheque made payable to Debbie Flynn.

The Craig Bay Choristers are active in the Oceanside Community!

Did you know that...

[a] a group of Craig Bay Chorister members entertained the masses with six songs at Beachfest's Fireworks night, August 11th, at the main beach in downtown Parksville?

[b] the Craig Bay Choristers perform free concerts for Seniors in care in the Oceanside area four times each year (twice at Christmas and twice in the spring), complete with coffee and treats for them after the singing?

[c] the Choristers have led the carol singing at Parksville's downtown Christmas light-up event the past two Novembers?

[d] the Choristers have supported Oceanside Hospice since 2010 with donations from ticket proceeds at our public concerts, donating at least $1,000 each year, and totaling nearly $15,000 so far?

[e] you can support your Choristers painlessly, by getting a Thrifty Smile card from us, loading it at the store with money from your bank card or another credit card, and using it to buy your groceries at Thrifty Foods? It costs you nothing but Thrifty donates back to the choir 5 cents of every dollar you load onto the card.

Call any member of the Choristers executive listed below to get your card, and help the Choristers continue with our community work.

Thanks!

Recap of the Craig Bay Charity Classic (Photos by Wally Chinn)

This is why we live here, good weather, fine friends, and beautiful scenery –

“We Are Blessed And So Fortunate”

The weatherman gave us the perfect day for golf. 96 players teed it up and enjoyed a day on the links with old and new friends they made.

The organizing committee would like to thank everyone who participated and those who helped with the vari-ous tasks throughout the day. We all know who you are, great job.

The 50/50 winner took home $330, everyone was careful not to get a HIO so with the insurance and other sources of revenue the event was able to turn over $1600 to the CBFFD to kick start their annual upcoming event.

The committee is looking forward to next year—if you have any suggestion for improvement, feel free to con-tact any of the organizers. Our mission is to keep the costs where they are, help our Charity Partner and above all have fun and participate in some way even if you don’t golf.

Again, thanks for making it a day to remember.

Community Close-Up: Stay Warm this Fall at the Beach Club

Tidelines October 2018 9

Even though the swimming pool is now closed, the Beach Club offers several other amenities to

take you through the fall and winter feeling great! The Hot Tub is open all year round to enjoy even

on chillier days, the Infrared Sauna offers therapeutic benefits, and the Health Club is open from

5am to 11pm daily to meet your fitness needs. And best of all, this is all included with your home

ownership at Craig Bay! See all amenities at www.craigbay.com/beach-club

Not familiar with these features? Here’s a quick breakdown to help you get started:

HOT TUB Open daily from 5am to 10:30pm. Please be sure to replace the cover

when you leave, as this helps to retain the water temperature and

prevent water loss. All users must shower prior to entry. And don’t

forget to bring your Key FOB outside with you so that you can get

re-enter the building. Please note that children under 7 years of age

are not permitted in the hot tub at any time. www.craigbay.com/pool

INFRARED SAUNA The Infrared Sauna is located in the Beach Club, between the change rooms and the

pool entry area, and is available on a ‘first come’ basis during Beach Club daily open

hours. This is a dry sauna that uses a gradual increase in temperature which promotes

an internal rise in body temperature. It is important that water of any kind (including

sweat) does not absorb into the wooden interior, as water from the hot tub/shower/

perspiration can discolour and warp wood. Please use towels on the seat and the floor

to catch any sweat or moisture that may become present. Further, to maintain a hy-

gienic sauna please be sure to shower prior to entering the sauna, particularly after

using the gym. Please change out of wet bathing suit if going from the hot tub to the

sauna. 20 – 30 minutes is an optimal time for sauna benefits. Find more details about

sauna use here: www.craigbay.com/sauna

HEALTH CLUB The Health Club is located on the lower level of the Beach Club, open

from 5am – 11pm daily. This fitness facility features a full range of

equipment to suit your goals. Please be sure to wear clean, indoor-only

shoes while using the Health Club so that we can keep it clean and

avoid damage to equipment. All users must sign in before use with full

name and time of visit. If you are the last person to leave the room,

please be sure to turn off the stereo, TV, floor and ceiling fans, and

close any windows before you depart. Thank you!
