Cook During the summer months in the north- ern hemisphere — NOW — the heat is on and many people head to beaches to enjoy the sun, sand and water. So, slather on a bit of sunscreen as you read some Tidbits about beaches! • • Even land-locked areas boast beach- es on their lakes and rivers, and people use those for summer fun. But the majority of beach fun happens on the coasts. The Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, Hawaii are the largest areas of coastline for North America. • • States and provinces with the lon- gest coastlines make the most of their beaches when it comes to tourism. Florida is the beach capital of the con- tinental United States, but for those who are able to hop on an airplane for a beach, Hawaii is definitely a state to visit; after all, as a group of islands, the state is surrounded by water. • • A number of beaches claim to be the “world’s longest beach.” Long Beach, Washington, has a big sign proclaim- ing that on its beach. However, it is only about 25 miles (40 km) long. It does have some terrific claims to fame though. It is a peninsula that sits north of where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and is where Lewis and Clark stopped on their trek across the west in 1805. • • The Lewis and Clark Corps of Dis- covery traveled more than 4,000 miles (6,437 km) on an expedition to explore the area west of the Mississippi River. The beach area that they discovered in Washington was not a sun-filled beach. A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly her husband burst into the kitchen. “Care-ful. CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CARE-FUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?” The husband calm-ly replied, “I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A misunder-standing tests the temperament of the some-times headstrong Aries. Instead of blowing your top, take time for a pleasant diversion while things cool down.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A work-place problem could make the divine Bovine see red. But talk it out before you consider walking out. Some surprising facts emerge that change your earlier focus. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You face a choice between ignoring your uneasy feel-ings about your relationship with that spe-cial person and demanding explanations. A close friend offers wise counsel. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change you’d been hoping for carries an unex-pected complication. Stay the course, and things will work themselves out. Be sure to make time for family and friends.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Aspects favor spending time with loved ones. On the job, new ideas are generally welcomed. But some demands for changes could cause problems. Be ready to defend your choices.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: That workplace problem is close to being resolved with results that should please everyone. Take time off to indulge your love of fun and games.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Most of the time you are the most unflap-pable person around. But be ready to be thrown off-balance in the nicest way when Cupid takes aim in your direction.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It’s not often when someone tries to “sting” the sharp-witted Scorpion. But it can hap-pen. Continue to be skeptical about any-thing that seems too good to be true.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) Your strong sense of self-esteem helps you serve as a role model for some-one who needs personal reassurances. Your efforts pay off in an unexpected way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close considers revealing a painful secret. Withhold judgment. Instead, open your generous heart, and offer dollops of your love and understanding.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your talents as a peacemaker are called upon once more as an old problem re-emerges with new complications. Move cautiously in order to avoid falling into hidden traps.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your artistic side is enhanced with the reception given to your new project. Use this success as encouragement toward fulfilling your larger goals.BORN THIS WEEK: Your natural sense of leadership is combined with a deep sense of responsibility. People trust you to give them both guidance and understanding.

Larry’s barn burned down, and, Susan, his wife, called the insur-ance company. On the phone she said, “We had that barn insured for $50,000 and I want my money.” The insurance agent said, “Whoa there just a minute, Susan. It doesn’t work quite like that. We will ascertain the value of the old barn and provide you with a new one of comparable worth.” After a pause, Susan said, “I’d like to cancel the policy on my husband.”

Like the Weather, Hot Investment Can Cool Off

We’re in the “Dog Days” of sum-mer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heating-and-cooling pattern — you can also find evidence of it in the investment world. To be specific, today’s “hot” investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to

take steps to avoid being left out in the cold.

An investment can become “hot” — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a well-known prod-uct or service may decide to “go public” by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot” for a while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert” is touting them in the media.

But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential” may not be what you think.

To help achieve your financial goals, you may be bet-ter off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, con-sider these ideas: Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality invest-ments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality com-panies you already own.Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell.Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, non-diversified portfolio. By diversifying your hold-ings, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversification, by itself, can-not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a short-term move. Successful investors adhere to long-term strategies that require discipline, patience and a con-stant focus on the future. By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill” of chasing after hot investments — but you will get the satisfaction of building a port-folio designed to help meet your important investment goals.

Stroke, Heart Attack Risks Are SimilarDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read all the time about the risks of having a heart attack. I never see anything said about the risks for having a stroke. What are they? I fear a stroke more than I do a heart attack. -- P.S.

ANSWER: The risks for both are similar. They include uncontrolled high blood pressure, ciga-rette smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, too little exercise, a large waist, excessive alcohol consumption and a high ratio of Apo B to Apo A-1. This last item needs an explanation. Apo B is similar to LDL cholesterol -- the bad kind of cholesterol, the kind that clogs arteries. Apo A-1 is more like HDL cholesterol -- good cholesterol, the kind that keeps arteries clean. I have to ad-mit that these tests are not usually ordered. This subject is complicated by the fact that there are two different kinds of stroke. The more-common variety comes from obstruction of blood flow to a part of the brain from a plugged artery, like the plugged heart artery of a heart attack. The less-common variety comes from the breaking of a brain artery, something called a hemorrhagic stroke. The two require different treatments and different approaches to prevention.P.S. is like most people who live in greater fear of a stroke than a heart attack. The booklet on strokes explains the kinds of strokes and what can be done to prevent and treat them. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently I had what the hospital doctors called a panic attack. I would like to know what causes them and if there is a cure. Would lack of sleep or medication have any-thing to do with it? -- W.B.

ANSWER: A panic attack is a period of extreme fear in a situation that doesn’t warrant such fear. It comes on suddenly, reaches a peak in 10 or fewer minutes and makes the person want to flee from the situation he or she finds him- or herself in -- shopping for groceries, driving a car or walking down a street. During an attack, some of the following are present: the heart beats fast; sweat breaks out; people become short of breath; they can feel like they are choking; they might have chest pain and believe they’re having a heart attack; they could be dizzy. The actual attack probably results from an outpouring of body chemicals, like adrenaline. What triggers the release of these chemicals usually is buried deeply in a person’s subconscious. Lack of sleep or medica-tion could make a person more susceptible to an attack. If you experience a panic attack only once, you don’t have a great concern. If the attacks recur, then you do have a problem that needs attention. Report them to your family doctor, who will get you started on treatment and refer you to a professional who can unearth hidden causes provoking these attacks.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
