Neatest TIDBITS® EXAMINES SOME FORMER OCCUPATIONS by Kathy Wolfe Even famous people had to start somewhere, as you’ll soon see. This week, Tidbits has re- searched some of their early jobs — before the famous became famous. • After being expelled from high school for riding his motorcycle through the halls, actor Marlon Brando was enrolled in military school, which resulted in another expulsion some months later. He went to work as a ditch digger, which he followed up with a position as an elevator operator in a New York City department store. Next came a stint as a night watchman before he finally entered acting school. • It’s hard to imagine James Bond as a milkman, but that was actor Sean Connery’s first job during his youth in Scotland. He went on to serve in the Royal Navy, followed up by positions as a lifeguard and ditch digger. Five-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood held a number of positions before making it big. He labored as a lumberjack, lifeguard, golf caddy, aircraft factory worker, steel mill employee and gas station attendant. At one point, he was cleaning swimming pools by day and auditioning for bit parts by night. He was nearly 30 by the time he got his breakthrough part as Rowdy Yates in the CBS series “Rawhide.” Employer to applicant: “In this job we need someone who is responsible.” Applicant: “I’m the one you want. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On Oct. 16, 1793, nine months after the execution of her husband, the former King Louis XVI of France, Marie-Antoinette follows him to the guillotine. At a time of economic turmoil in France, she lived extravagantly and responded to news that the French peasantry had no bread to eat by callously replying, "Let them eat cake."

• On Oct. 14, 1857, engineer and inventor Elwood Haynes is born in Portland, Ind. Haynes designed one of the very first American automobiles, the

Haynes "Pioneer," a 820-pound, open-bodied, push-start vehicle with chain drive, a steering tiller, 28-inch bicycle wheels and a one-cylinder, one-horsepower gasoline engine. It had room for only one person and could not go in reverse.

• On Oct. 12, 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell is executed by a German firing squad in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I. Cavell was honored with a statue in St. Martin's Place, just off London's Trafalgar Square.

• On Oct. 11, 1923, in a botched robbery attempt, three men blow up the mail car of a Southern Pacific train carrying passengers through southern Oregon. The explosives the thieves intended to use to open the mail car were too powerful, and the entire mail car was blown to bits.

• On Oct. 10, 1957, the Milwaukee Braves defeat

the New York Yankees in seven games to win their first World Series since 1914. No one expected the Braves to win, as the New York team had already won the championship 21 times.

• On Oct. 15, 1965, David Miller, a young Catholic pacifist, becomes the first U.S. war protestor to burn his draft card in direct violation of a law forbidding such acts. He was later arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment.

• On Oct. 13, 1975, singer Charlie Rich protests John Denver's big win at the Country Music Association Awards. Standing onstage to announce that year's winner, Rich opened the envelope, saw Denver's name written inside, reached into his pocket for a cigarette lighter and set the envelope on fire.

Gordon Matthew Sumner may have been a member of The Police, but that wasn’t his job, it was his band. Better known as Sting, Sumner was a primary school teacher and a soccer coach in his native England before getting his music career off the ground. His nickname came from the black and gold rugby shirts he frequently wore, which his friends said made him look like a hornet.

An applicant was filling out a job application. When he came to the question, “Have you ever been arrested?” He answered, “No.”

The next question, intended for people who had answered in the affirmative to the last one, was “Why?” The applicant answered it anyway: “Never got caught.”

While attending college, news commentator Bill O’Reilly was a pitcher for the semi-professional team, the New York Monarchs. After receiving a degree in history, O’Reilly taught English and history at a Miami high school for two years. Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor” is America’s most-watched cable news program.

Don't Delay! Opt Out of Online Databases

Delete Yourself From Online Databases

There is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online. There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be purchased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household demographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house.Let's say you look up your

name on a site such as Intelius.com. You'll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone else's name listed as well. This might be your first clue that someone

has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your information. If this happens to you, act quickly.Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so you're saved that step.Go to creditreport.com and order your credit reports from all three bureaus. Read them carefully when they arrive. While you're waiting, opt out of as many online database sites as you can. Most of them don't make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but you'll have to hunt for it. You'll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. You'll have to upload or

fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can be tricky: You might be listed as first name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted. You'll need to check again every few months. The reason: As more and more databases are sharing their records, or as you make transactions, your name could come up again. You'll need to delete it every time you find your name appearing. As a general rule, when you open a new account, opt out of having your information shared. It's no guarantee that your name won't get out, but it's a small step.

Is it really better to use plastic bags instead of paper at grocery stores? Not really. The monetary cost may be less, but the environment suffers when so many plastic bags get loose. Most of us have seen plastic bags flying in the wind, ending up on fences or in trees, littering otherwise attractive natural surroundings. One alternative is to use cloth bags.

People from all over the world visit the Dead Sea for its spas. There are many claims touting the benefits of the region’s solar radiation and climatic conditions, oxygen-enriched atmosphere, mineral-rich salty water, thermo-mineral springs and a therapeutic black mud. Supposedly the Queen of Sheba was the first to believe that the Dead Sea had healing powers, and Cleopatra had the world’s first spa built there.

Some scientists working on an island in the Pacific were chatting when one wondered aloud: “Our supplies should be arriving shortly. Why is it that if you transport something by car, it’s called a shipment, but when it is transported by ship, it’s called cargo? Doesn’t that seem a little backwards?”

A Chilean flamingo named “Pink Floyd” wintered at the Great Salt Lake in Utah after escaping from Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City in 1987. He (gen-der uncertain) continued to live in the wild, surviving on brine shrimp. Floyd was last seen in 2005 in Idaho.

A Tribute To Sports-men And Women

By Tresa Erickson

Conservation efforts have increased dramatically since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. An avid sportsman, Roosevelt worked hard to protect the natural resources he so loved. Assisting him in the effort were thousands of fellow sportsmen and wom-en. Together, they pushed for laws protecting public lands, waters and wildlife, requiring fishing and hunt-ing licenses, and funding state conservation agencies through taxation of gear. As a result, hundreds of thou-sands of species were saved from extinction, including antelope, elk, white-tailed

deer, wild turkeys and wood ducks. While Roos-evelt was rec-ognized for his efforts, most sports-men and women were not. They de-served public recognition, too.

Acutely aware of the prob-lem, Pennsylvania gun shop owner Ira Joffe suggested the creation of a day to thank sportsmen and wom-en for their conservation efforts. Governor Raymond Shafer supported the idea and established Outdoor Sportsman’s Day in the state in 1970.

The idea for a national day gained momentum with support from the National Shooting Sports Founda-tion, and just a year later, Congress got into the act. Senator Thomas McIntyre from New Hampshire and Representative Bob Sikes from Florida each pre-sented a bill calling for the establishment of National

Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of September. The bills were well received and passed in both houses. President Richard Nixon signed the first proc-lamation of the day on May 2, 1972.

From there, the celebra-tion of National Hunting and Fishing Day took off. Every state governor and many city mayors jumped onboard, work-ing diligently to pro-mote the day. National, regional, state and lo-cal organizations re-sponded with hundreds of hunting and fishing events.

The celebration of Na-tional Hunting and Fishing Day continues to this day. Each year, prominent figures from politicians to athletes to entertainers serve as chair of the day. Count-less events are held ev-erywhere in honor of the conservation efforts of sportsmen and wom-en. These serve to raise awareness of the cause and give others a chance to see how fun hunting and fishing can be.

10 REASONSWhy Isagenix® is Your Anti-Aging Solution1. SLOW AGING FROM THE INSIDE OUTIsagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing™ products help eliminate harmful toxins and impurities from the body that can accelerate the aging process. These products also replenish the body with crucial nutrients for optimal health. The Rejuvity and other anti-aging products also address the need for optimal cellular nutrition that ultimately creates a new level of wellness, vitality, and youthful appearance from the inside out.

2. ADDRESS AGING ON ALL FRONTS-NOT JUST SKINThe skin is largely an indication of how the body is aging. If the body has been abused, neglected and malnourished, then the skin will reflect this. However, if the body’s cells, tissues and organs are protected from harmful pollutants and replenished with crucial nutrients, the skin will reflect this level of health by appearing vibrant, glowing and youthful.

3. NO HARSH CHEMICALS OR IRRITANTSThe anti-aging products in the Rejuvity and IsaDermix® lines do not use any harsh, irritating chemicals or compounds, including phthalates or parabens. Other common products that include harsh compounds often require downtime and may damage the skin further.

4. PROMOTE SKIN’S NATURAL PROCESSESAgeless Renewal Serum and other anti-aging skin products help minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles, support collagen production, improve elasticity and tone, and increase firmness by helping the skin remember what it has forgotten as we age.

5. BOOST ENERGY, VITALITY, AND OVERALL HEALTHIn addition to the superior skin care, Rejuvity and other Isagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing products slow biological aging of the entire body, leading to enhanced energy and a new level of vitality and improved overall wellness.6. SUPPORTED BY SCIENCEAll of the ingredients in Rejuvity and the other Isagenix anti-aging and replenishing products are supported by scientific research. In addition, many of the company’s own products - including Ageless Renewal Serum - have been specifically investigated in scientific trials with extremely positive results. A recent trial on Ageless Renewal Serum showed a 92% increase in the overall improvement of the skin, and the CoQ10 used in Ageless Actives has been shown to be 800% more absorbable than standard powder forms used in other products.

7. SUPERIOR QUALITYIsagenix prides itself in using only the highest quality ingredients. With Rejuvity and other anti-aging product lines, this commitment to quality continues.8.
