Neatest TIDBITS® EXPLORES HIBERNATION by Patricia L. Cook Some of us spend a lot of time yawning and nodding our way through movies, airplane and auto rides, sermons, speeches and more. Imagine sleeping through an entire winter! Let’s explore the extreme sleep called hibernation. • Hibernation is a very deep, special sleep that animals use for protection during the cold winter months. All hibernators eat a lot of food for their bodies to store as fat, seek safe shelter for the winter months and become inactive or dormant. Some store nuts or other seeds to eat during the winter. • There are actually two groups of hibernators: deep sleepers and “true” hibernators. True hibernation involves greatly lowering breathing, body temperature and heart rate. Most people think of bears when the word hibernation is used. In fact, bears are not true hibernators but deep sleepers. They are inactive during extreme winter weather but may wake up during mild weather. They are easily disturbed by noise and can rise to protect themselves rather quickly. Many bears actually give birth during hibernation so they have to be aware and somewhat awake to tend to their cubs. Some scientists call the winter sleep of bears “denning” instead of hibernation or deep sleeping. turn the page for more! Q: Teacher: Into what state of inactivity do some animals go in winter? TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

On Jan. 23, 1775, London merchants petition Parliament for relief from the financial hardship put upon them by the curtailment of trade with the North American colonies. Most critical to the merchants' concerns were the 2 million pounds sterling in outstanding debts owed to them by their North American counterparts.

• On Jan. 18, 1882, A.A. Milne, creator of "Winnie-the-Pooh," is born. Milne wrote his volumes of verse for his son, Christopher Robin: "When We

Were Very Young" (1924), "Winnie-the-Pooh" (1926), "Now We Are Six" (1927) and "The House at Pooh Corner" (1928).

• On Jan. 19, 1915, during World War I, Britain suffers its first casualties from an air attack when two German zeppelins drop bombs on Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn on the eastern coast of England. The zeppelin, a motor-driven rigid airship, was developed by German inventor Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin in 1900.

• On Jan. 17, 1953, a prototype Chevrolet Corvette sports car makes its debut at General Motors' Motorama auto show in New York City. The car featured an all-fiberglass body, a white exterior and red interior, a 150-horsepower engine and a starting price tag of around $3,500. An AM radio and heater were extra.

• On Jan. 20, 1961, 87-year-old Robert Frost recited

his poem "The Gift Outright" at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. Although Frost had written a new poem for the occasion, titled "Dedication," faint ink in his typewriter made the words difficult to read, so he recited "The Gift Outright" from memory.

• On Jan. 21, 1977, President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War. In total, some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early '70s to avoid serving in the war.

• On Jan. 22, 1981, Rolling Stone magazine's John Lennon tribute issue hits newsstands, featuring a cover photograph of a naked John Lennon curled up in a fetal embrace of a fully clothed Yoko Ono. The photograph had been taken just 12 hours before Lennon's death.(c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

HIBERNATION (continued):•A list of hibernating mammals includes:

chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, possums, hedgehogs, hamsters, skunks, bats, marmots, badgers and some lemurs. Some non-mammals that hibernate are: turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, newts and some insects. There is even one bird that is considered ahibernator.TheCommonPoorwillcandropitsbody temperature and go into a hibernation-like state known as “torpor” for several weeks.

•TheArcticgroundsquirrel, atruehibernator,is North America’s largest and most northern ground squirrel. This small mammal digsa hibernation chamber off its main burrow which is only about 20 inches (.5 m) deep. It rolls up into a ball and covers itself with its tail in the chamber lined with leaves, grass, lichen and animal hair. It is the only mammal known to survive a drop in body temperature during hibernationof28to27ºF(-2to-3ºC).Peoplecan’t survive a body temperature lower than 90ºF (32ºC).This squirrelwakesupbrieflyevery few weeks during its long hibernation, which may last seven months.

• The typeandlengthofhibernationdependson the animal’s body and its habitat or home. Since the Arctic ground squirrel is small and lives in cold areas, its hibernation is long. Similarly, mouse lemurs hibernate up to seven months. Garter snakes in the Arctic tundra may hibernate eight months. The longesthibernatorsknownareTurkishhamstersintheMiddleEast, which can hibernate as long asten months!

•Thoselong-hibernatinggartersnakesmaygettogether with thousands of friends for group hibernating. Groups of up to 12 skunks sleep together, and brown bats hang in clusters in their caves in groups of over 100.

HIBERNATION (continued):• To prepare for hibernation and the approachofwinter, animalseatalot.Theyneedlotsofbody fat for the long sleep. Baby toads and bats actually eat enough to double their weight. Not all bats hibernate. By the way, did you know thatbatsaretheonlyflyingmammals?(Flyingsquirrelsandflying lemursmove throughtheair but they are only gliding.)

•Blackbearsmaygainasmuchas30pounds(13.5 kg) per week when they are preparing to hibernate or “den.” So, just like when you eat too much at a holiday meal, the extra fat makes animals less energetic and ready for their long winter’s nap.

• Non-breeding polar bear females andmalesdon’t hibernate or den. Pregnant polar bearshibernate in dens built in snow banks while preparing for their cubs to arrive. The cubsweigh about a pound (.45 kg) when born and 20-30 pounds (9-14 kg) when they come out of the dens in March or April. Polar bearsare found inArctic areas ofCanada,Alaska,Russia, Greenland and Norway.

• Are you wondering about these sleepers’bathroom issues? When they burn fat, itproduceswater.Thiswaterstaysinthebodiesof true hibernators for hydration, eliminating the need to urinate. Animals that get up to eat occasionally, such as squirrels, do urinate.

•Insteadofstoringlargeamountsofbodyfat, eastern chipmunks and Columbian groundsquirrels (and other small mammals) store large amounts of nuts and other seeds in their burrows. During the winter in the northern, snowy areas of North America, snow shoveling and snow blowing are necessary. When cleaning your walks and driveways, it is best (and the law in most areas) to throw the snow onto your lawns instead of in the streets. If it goes on the lawn it will melt into the ground and replenish the groundwater. If it is on the streets, it will go into the city drainage system and most of the time, will add to the workload of the treatment system in your city. This is a waste since the snowfall does not need to be treated.

True hibernators consist of endotherms and ectotherms. Endotherms are mammals and birds, known as warm-blooded animals. They control their body temperature at a constant level. They lower their body temperature for hibernation using less energy and needing less food. Ectotherms are cold-blooded animals like insects, frogs and snakes. Their body temperature depends on the weather. They must find winter shelter to avoid freezing to death. When the weather warms, their bodies warm, and they become active again.

Advantages of being a bear instead of a woman: You must eat yourself silly before hibernating; you get to sleep for months; your children are born about the size of walnuts while you’re half-asleep in hibernation; you can swat your big claws when you want to get your way; and your mate expects hairy legs, extreme body fat and growling!

Estivation is a type of hibernation that animals in hot climates use for surviving dry seasons. When there is not enough food or water, animals such as tortoises and crocodiles will sleep underground for months, escaping the heat and saving body moisture.

It seems they were used by royalty to drink beer, thereby avoiding the yeast residue left over from the fermentation process. • It takes 450 skilled workers to create a Steinway grand piano -- and the piano is made up of about 12,000 individual parts. • If you are like 83 percent of adult Americans, you received a gift you didn't want during the recent holiday season. • If you're a heavy coffee drinker, you might want to consider the following: A study conducted in the United Kingdom found that those who reported the highest consumption of caffeine also were more likely to report hallucinations and other extrasensory experiences. • The Campbell's Soup portraits created by Andy Warhol have become icons of the Pop Art movement, and today they sell at auction for upward of $10 million. They weren't always so well-regarded, however; in 1962, actor Dennis Hopper (a visionary art collector, it seems) purchased one of the first examples for a mere $75.***Thought for the Day: "I have known a vast quantity of nonsense talked about bad men not looking you in the face. Putting the Kibosh on Nuisance Barking

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the best way to get my 6-month-old dog, “Kit,” to quit nuisance barking, and does Bark Off really work? -- Phillip M., via email

DEAR PHILLIP: The best way to address nuisance barking is through daily, attentive training methods. Whether you spring for an ultrasonic “anti-barking” device or something else, the key to reducing or stopping Kit’s barking is spending time with him, teaching him not to bark incessantly. The most common training method to stop unwanted barking is to distract the dog with a noise, a hiss or a sharp “no!” Or, in the case of the device mentioned, an “ultrasonic” noise that does the same thing. No matter how much money you spend or don’t spend, that’s really the key technique. But there’s more to it. When I say “distract,” that doesn’t mean just hissing, shaking a can of pennies or pressing an ultrasonic control button from your cozy spot on the couch. I mean, distract immediately, then get up and go to Kit and have him sit and stay for

a minute. When he does that, give him lots of praise. Then -- and this may sound revolu-tionary -- spend more time with him, training or playing. Just pressing a button and ignor-ing your dog won’t solve the problem. The button you should press when Kit’s barking is the pause button on your DVR.Kit, at 6 months, is going through a bit of a change, heading into puppy puberty. He’s en-ergetic and pushing the envelope. So be firm and consistent with his obedience training, play with him to work off that energy, and set a daily schedule for him -- feeding, walks, training, play, sleep -- and stick to it. It will take a few weeks to reduce his barking this way, but it’s worth it.

Tax-Prep Software

Even if you've always done your taxes with pencil, paper and a calculator, there are benefits to using a tax-preparation software program. The biggest one is accuracy. The neater and more accurate your tax return is, the less reason the Internal Revenue Service will have to study your return more closely. Some of the more well-known programs are TaxCut, TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxACT.Before you buy, read the box carefully. Will the program run on your computer? Will the included forms cover your tax situation? For example, if you have a small part-time business with Schedule C expenses and income, a basic program likely won't include the right forms.Generally, all tax-software

programs are the same.--The program will start by asking a lot of questions. Once you enter the personal data, such as your name, address and Social Security number, you won't have to do it again. The reason for

many of the questions is that the program will decide what forms you need. Have patience with the ones that don't apply to you.--The program holds your information from one year to the next, and many entries will be automatically transferred over to the new forms.--The program will fill in numbers automatically from one form to the next, lessening your chances of transposing digits or leaving something out.--At the end, the program will do a review and show you where you might have left out information, places where you fall outside the expected average response, and most importantly which places on your form are likely to be flagged by the IRS.--You can install your state's program, and the numbers will transfer to it from the Federal

portion of the software. Before you begin entering numbers in the tax program, check the math on your W-2 Form or any Form 1099 you received from self-employment work. If it's wrong, notify the company and have a corrected form sent to you and the IRS. While working in the software program, don't override any numbers. Instead, if they don't look right, backtrack and investigate numbers you've typed in and see where the discrepancy started. If you made more than $600 in miscellaneous or self-employed work, you should have a Form 1099 for that. Remember that a copy of each one goes to the IRS, so don't leave any out.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

H IBERNACULUM

CHMUIUBANRE L

HIBERNATION (continued):• On humans, body fat is not necessarily

desirable, although we need some for reserve energy. For animals, it is extremely important. Thereare two typesofbody fat—whiteandbrown fat.

• White fat is what animals live off of whilehibernating.White fatburns slowlyand lastsfor a long time. Brown fat is found near the vital organs, heart and lungs and is needed for survival.Thisfatislikerocketfuelandisusedfor quick bursts of energy.

• One small animal that is really a nuisanceto farmers and even suburban neighborhoods is the woodchuck. You’ve probably heard the tongue twister: “Howmuchwoodwoulda woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuckwood?”Theansweris:“Awoodchuckwould chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.” Actually a woodchuck, also known as a groundhog, whistle pig or marmot, is the largest member of the squirrel family. It eats seeds, leaves, grass, flowers, fruit, eggs, insectsand, yes, some wood.

• Punxsutawney Phil is probably the mostfamoushibernatorintheworld.Thislittleguy(groundhog) has been a “weather predictor” for over 120 years. February 2nd is Groundhog Day (thedayPhilawakens),andPhilseeing(ornotseeing) his shadow on that day “determines” thetimeOle’ManWinterwilllinger.ThetownofPunxsutawney,Pennsylvania, hastieditselfclosely to the groundhog. Phil has his ownwebsite, fan club and appears on lots of news and weather programs every February.

• While the snow and cold of winter are allaround us, isn’t it interesting to think of all the animalsthataresleepingitaway?
