IACS 2015 Board of Directors

This year’s Santa Breakfast at the IACS was our best one yet! Three hundred guests came to enjoy our delicious breakfast, meet Santa Claus, and enjoy the performance by the stu-dents in our Italian Edu-cation Program. There are always a few who ar-en’t too sure about a guy with a big white beard, but most of the children were happy to sit on San-ta’s lap and let him know

SANTA BREAKFAST 2015 their wishes for this year. Each one received cookies provided by Santa’s help-er, our President Giovanni LoIacono along with their candy cane. Maestre Ma-ria Sugameli, Gina Lalama Colella and Sandra Torn-berg were proud of their students as they performed Italian Christmas songs and poems that they have learned. The families left smiling with an extra dose of holiday cheer.

My wish is that all of you had a beautiful Christmas season with family and friends, and now I want to wish everyone a healthy, happy New Year!

Joseph Randazzo, age 88, died peacefully at the Wil-liam Beaumont Hospital of Grosse Pointe on De-cember 2, 2015. Joseph was born, Giuseppe Ran-dazzo, in Terrisini, Sicily on January 5, 1927, the son of Salvatore and Ma-ria Randazzo.

In January of 1953 at the age of 26, Giuseppe im-migrated to the United States. Like so many oth-ers, he heard about Amer-ica and the opportunities that lie within. With de-termination and courage that became legendary, he set sail to America to fulfill his dreams. As a stow away on a freighter, Giuseppe was locked in a small dark room, next to the engines for almost 30 days. A friend worked in the kitchen and brought Giuseppe food when he could. At one time, he went without food or wa-ter for almost five days, because his friend that worked in the kitchen had taken ill and was unable to bring Giuseppe any provi-sions.

Finally, after a grueling voyage, the ship docked in New Orleans for repairs. That’s when Giuseppe got off the ship. Soon after,

IN DEEPEST SYMPATHYhe arranged to live with his uncle, Antonio Bom-marito, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and eventually became an America cit-izen. His first job was at Ford Motor Company in Wayne, Michigan, where he worked on the assem-bly line. He saved enough money to buy a used truck and began peddling fruit & vegetables up and down the streets of Detroit. Not surprisingly, his business flourished and his many customers from nearby auto plants and neighbor-hoods would look forward to seeing Joe daily with his fresh produce.

In 1956, Joe Randaz-zo opened his first store on the corner of Mound Road & Outer Drive in Detroit. Throughout the years, it underwent sever-al expansions to meet the needs of his never ending line of customers. Joe has four children who are cur-rently involved in running the produce business, as well as the upcom-ing third generation, his grandchildren. There are five locations throughout the Metropolitan Detroit area. Joe Randazzo’s Fruit & Vegetable Markets has become one of the largest produce retailers in the Midwest.

The story doesn’t end there! In November of 1993 Joe purchased a nursery on Romeo Plank Road, at 25 Mile, in Ma-comb Township; another accomplishment after the success of the fruit and

produce businesses.

Mr. Randazzo’s hobby was work. He loved to work and the nursery business became his pride and joy. When the nursery slowed down in the fall, he would go to Marco Island, Flor-ida during the winter months. There he enjoyed fishing and playing cards with his buddies. Joe’s grandchildren fondly re-member the family stories he would share at the ta-ble during family, Sunday dinners.

Mr. Randazzo is survived by his children; Samu-el (Janet), Marie Urbani (Anthony), Patrina Ber-gamo (David), and Peter. He is the loving Pappa of Sam Randazzo, Annmarie Thursam (Scott), Sarah Urbani, Alexa Bergamo, Patrina Bergamo, Marina Bergamo, Joseph Randaz-zo, Peter Randazzo, Jr. and Jack Randazzo. Joe is also survived by two broth-ers, Carl Randazzo (Ag-nes) and Nino Randazzo (Joanne). He was prede-ceased by his wife Antoi-nette in 2012 and his sib-lings, Salvatore Randazzo, Rozena Millitello, Fillipo Randazzo and Maria Ven-timiglia.

IN DEEPESTSYMPATHY

Peter J. Cracchiolo, 98, of Grosse Pointe Shores passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Peter was born in Detroit on September 12, 1917, one of nine children born to the late Giuseppe and Benedetta Cracchiolo.A child of the Depression, adversity challenged Peter early in life. As soon as he was able, he sought em-ployment in order to con-tribute to the household. In the face of constant hard-ship, a lifetime’s worth of character was built at an early age. Pulling a wagon loaded with vegetables for sale down a dirt road called Lakeshore Drive, Peter dreamed of one day liv-ing in a home there. With an inner drive fortified by faith in God, Peter devel-oped a will to constantly pursue a higher purpose.Peter was called by his country and served hon-orably in the U.S. Army during WWII. After re-

turning home in 1947, he once again focused on sup-porting the family. With a

number of his siblings, Peter sold vegetables out of a truck in the suburbs. With three of his broth-ers, Sam, Raymond and Thomas, he co-founded a number of corporations, including Burns Auto-matic Corporation and Burns Cold Forged Cor-poration. Leveraging the combined talents of the group, they pioneered the use of cold forging

techniques to manufacture large tooling and industrial parts. Within years, their success brought the atten-tion of another growing company in the area, Mas-co, and the two companies eventually merged.Peter’s professional achievements and busi-ness success would soon be eclipsed. At a time when he found himself blessed in so many ways, Peter dedi-cated himself to pay those blessings forward. What he built with his hands, his mind and his will, now gave him the ability to help others do the same.Peter dedicated his sec-ond career to serving his God, his community and fellow man. Together with his wife, he established the Peter and Constance Crac-chiolo Foundation in 1984. They have been recognized for their generous gifts to organizations such as The Detroit Institute of Arts, St. John Hospital, Most Holy Trinity School, and Holy Cross Children’s Services, among others. As a result of his selfless generosi-

ty, countless people’s lives were touched by a man in-tent on giving back. Peter lived his life in plain sight of God, as he hon-ored the Lord in his daily rosary, attendance at mass and tireless support of the metro Detroit Catholic community. A longtime resident of Grosse Pointe, his faithful service found its home at Our Lady Star of the Sea, where he was a Founding Parishioner. As a child, Peter often visit-ed Fr. Solanus Casey, where the two prayed together and shared bread. Many decades later, Peter became a Benefactor and Cabinet Member of the Solanus Ca-sey Foundation, complet-ing a circle of giving started so many years ago.An active member of the community, Peter was a former President of the Eastside Lions Club.Possessing an engaging personality and a conta-gious smile, Peter built friendships that spanned decades and provided him great joy. Many knew him to be a de-pendable and unwaver ing friend. He was a f a i t h - f i l l e d man, devot-ed to his wife and family. Raising his family was his proudest achievement of them all, and the foun-dation of his humility, hu-

mor and sense of self.He lived an exceptional life, believing he was doing God’s work and choosing to leave the world a better place for his actions. Peter now joins his dear wife, Connie in Heaven with his Lord. He is survived by daugh-ters, Bernadette Lindquist (Eric), Grace Cracchio-lo (Anthony Torre) and Phyllis DeMars (Gregory); son, Peter T. Cracchiolo (Camille); grandchildren, Kristina Mulder (Dan-iel), Rebecca Gibbons, and Laura Jensen (Michael), Michael Jr. and David Tin-dall, and Gregory DeMars (Melissa), Sara Harrison (Michael) and Bethany Matus (Alex), and Peter T. Jr. (Leah), Matthew, An-drew (Allison) and Mark Cracchiolo; great-grand-children, Katelynn, Allison and Thomas Mulder, Lucas and Marcus Harrison; and brothers Raymond Crac-chiolo (Jane), and Thomas Cracchiolo (Carol). He was predeceased by brothers Sam and Joseph

Cracchiolo and sisters Lena Testa, Phyllis Militel-lo, Roma and Antoinette Cracchiolo.Peter’s recent years were made more enjoyable as he was blessed with the love and support of caregivers Carmen Matugas, Donata Lleva and Emily Chiu.In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make dona-tions to the Most Holy Trin-ity School , 1229 LaBrosse, Detroit, MI 48224; Crac-chiolo Inpatient Rehabili-tation Center, c/o St. John Health Foundation, 22101 Moross Road; Mack Office Building, Suite 102; De-troit, MI 48236; The Peter and Connie Cracchiolo En-dowed Scholarship Fund at DeLaSalle High School , 14600 Common Road, Warren, MI 48088; or the Fr.
