Choral Classics

Accompanied by Hull Choral Union Baroque Orchestra

SoloistsCressida Sharp – SopranoJoanna Gamble – AltoAustin Gunn –Tenor Quentin Brown – Bass Ever since its first performance in April 1742 “Messiah” has enjoyed a place in the hearts of the British public, and seems a fitting conclusion to HCU’s contribution to Hull UK City of Culture 2017. An afternoon performance, in the magnificent setting of the city’s newly-designated Minster, the age-old story of Christ’s birth, passion, death and resurrection will be recounted by soloists, chorus and orchestra. An afternoon not to be missed.

Accompanied by Hull Choral Union Orchestra An evening of popular highlights from the world of choral and orchestral music. Fauré’s much-loved Requiem will form the central part of the programme and will be framed by classic items such as Handel’s Zadok the Priest; Albinoni’s Adagio for Organ and Strings; Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine; and Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens. There is sure to be something for everyone in this closing concert of the current season.

Accompanied by Hull Choral Union Chamber Orchestra SoloistJoanna Gamble – Alto The Season opens with works by two very popular contemporary British composers. John Rutter works his magic on a range of familiar Spiritual melodies, scored for soloist, chorus and orchestra. Jazzy rhythms and harmonies abound and this piece will set the HCU Chorus and Orchestra, joined for this concert by the Chamber Choir of Hymers College, off in swinging style for this new season. Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” takes its inspiration from a variety of sources and reflects on the horror and futility of war via texts from different traditions. Commissioned by the Royal Armouries and first performed by the National Youth Choir in 2000, this piece has swiftly grown in popularity with both performers and audiences alike. Incorporating “The Last Post” into its sequence of movements the work provides a fitting focus to our thoughts in the run up to Remembrance Sunday.
