9:00 a.m.–Noon Keynote: Capitalizing on the Predictability of Change (Lansdowne Ballroom ABCD)

KarenDyer

Change happens all the time. Good leaders understand this constancy and are acutely aware of the need for change to be effectively managed before, during, and after implementation. During this session ASCD leaders will be highly engaged in the use of self-assessment data about approaches to change that will enable them to predict and shape both anticipated and unanticipated change. Participants will examine the differences between change (the event) and transition (the process) and discover strategies for helping others navigate change as they work to help others move toward achieving common goals. Participants will also explore the power of perception when attempting to change paradigms.

Noon–1:00 p.m. Lunch (Riverside Hearth)

1:30–3:00 p.m. Hot Topics

Can You Hear Me Now, Congress? How to Leave No Educator Behind (Bacon)

DavidGriffith

The stimulus, the Race to the Top and i3 grant competitions, and the Common Core standards are the most recent examples of ambitious education reforms emanating from Washington. But they are all a prelude to the looming changes to the No Child Left Behind Act via the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization, revisions that will have a sweeping and profound effect on the daily work of educators. Learn about the most recent national policy and political developments and how you can help influence the views of policymakers for the benefit of your colleagues, schools, and students.

Dancing with Data: Gathering and Using the Right Information (Conant)

KitHarris

Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data is often the topic of advanced research and evaluation courses. However, you can get more out of your research efforts by learning certain basics that will help you make sense of reams of data. Now that you’ve got your data in hand, and hopefully in a form that is useful, discuss with ASCD’s market research manager Kit Harris how best to begin the process of analyzing and interpreting data to determine what has been learned.

The Future Is Here: 21st Century Learning (Faulkner)

JudyZimny

21st century skills, 21st century technology, 21st century media—the buzzwords and jargon are everywhere! But what does it really look like to learn in the 21st century? And what is our role as ASCD leaders in influencing 21st century learning environments for the whole child? This highly interactive session will go beyond the hype to explore definitions of, barriers to, and strategies for real 21st century learning.

Surviving and Thriving in Tough Economic Times (Kettering)

RonMiletta

Are you trying to get through the current economic downturn? Are you finding opportunities for new directions? What can you do now to add value for your members, retain their commitment, and be ready to emerge even stronger when the economy has improved? Join your colleagues to discuss strategies for using the current situation to your long-term advantage.

Connecting Online to Engage Offline: Social Networking to Find Your Audience (Thurber)

WalterMcKenzie

Social media tools have increased our means of communicating and collaborating, but nothing compares to face-to-face interaction. How can you use social networking to find your audience and increase your visibility? Technology is not the goal, but rather the means to connect with others and share your message. Learn and share ways to cultivate an active and interested online community that’s motivated to go beyond the computer screen and engage in person.

Succession Planning and the Leadership Pipeline (Lansdowne Ballroom CD)

KarenDyer

This session will identify the key drivers for developing a successful succession plan as organizations work to fill their leadership pipeline. Participants will explore some of the tools, assessments, and methodologies used for succession planning and will identify those factors that contribute to the success or failure of succession management initiatives.

Do More With More: Collaboration and Partnerships (Lansdowne Ballroom CD)

SeanSlade

Working in isolation is no longer an option. Successful collaborations and relationships among groups can result in new resources and opportunities. They can grow your organization’s visibility and influence, increase participation, and pool the knowledge and experience of many.

However, they also require a change in thinking and acting. What are the organizational boundaries? How do you sort the useful information and how much effort is required to maintain these new relationships and collaborations?

This session will focus on best practices in identifying, developing, and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships across ASCD constituent groups and organizations and between schools and community groups. A panel of leaders will share successes, challenges, and the benefits and pitfalls of working with other groups.

You Make the Difference: Messaging and Influence (Kettering)

MelissaMellor

You know that your ASCD constituent group has a lot of expertise to offer, but your group isn’t always on the radar screen of the trustees, school board, media, local, provincial, and state decision makers. By creating your message and finding the appropriate channel to get that message to the right people, you can increase your influence over decisions that affect students, staff, and schools; attract new members; improve awareness about your group; and have a seat at the right tables. This presentation will include the use of relationship building, social networking media, and other methods for reaching your target audiences.

Triumphant Transitions: Young Professional Perspectives (Sarnoff)

TheresaLewallen

Come hear about the success of young professionals transitioning to make a difference in the educational community. What are the issues? How have young professionals conquered the challenges? Explore various models of support from the affiliate community. Leaders will better understand generational issues limiting young professionals and leave with strategies for implementing successful transitions.

What types of leadership work best in a time of constant change? How can you make a difference at both the local and international levels? TheresaLewallen

This session is recommended for ASCD constituent group executive directors.

Presidents-Elect (Conant)

As you prepare to assume a leadership role in the ASCD community, you know you want to hit the ground running. What are your goals for the growth of your organization? WalterMcKenzie

This session is recommended for Professional Interest Community Facilitators.

Vision in Action Session (Sarnoff)

SeanSlade

This year, ASCD offered its first Vision in Action award, which recognizes schools that move beyond a narrow focus on academic achievement to take action for the whole child, creating learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency, and ready for the world beyond formal schooling. Classroom practices and schoolwide systems are key elements of two Whole Child Initiatives: Healthy School Communities and First Amendment Schools. Teachers and staff of the 2009 award winner—the University of Northern Iowa’s Malcolm Price Laboratory School (PLS)—will offer insights on implementing these efforts. This session is recommended for Healthy School Communities, First Amendment Schools, and Student Chapters.

New for the 2010 Event

The Whole Child Exhibit Comes to L2L At the 2010 ASCD Annual Conference, we took whole child advocacy to the next level and created a designated area with resources, workshops, and space to collaborate with like-minded leaders working to ensure that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.

Now, the ASCD Whole Child Exhibit will be at the 2010 L2L Event! Make sure you stop by the exhibit in your time at Lansdowne to ask questions, voice your support, and check out what Whole Child materials ASCD has available.

ASCD’s Legislative Conference Has a New Name and DateASCD’s LEAP Legislative Institute has become the Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy and will now be held January 23–25, 2011, at the Westin Grand Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Remember to register while you’re at the L2L Event and you will take advantage of the early registration rate! This lower rate extends through September 15, 2010 and registration closes entirely January 7, 2010.
