It can access the new credit line following “a state of calamity” declared by the president, the World Bank said in a statement. On average, more than 1,000 lives are lost every year in the Philippines, with typhoons accounting for the majority of deaths and damage. The country is also highly exposed to earth- quakes and volcanic eruptions. “Financial shocks caused by natural disasters undermine economic growth and poverty reduction,” said Philippine finance secretary Cesar Purisima. “This is the envi- ronmental equivalent of the middle income trap. Governments need to be agile in mobilizing resources if we are to break free from disaster- traps that knock back the poorest and most vul- nerable,” he added. Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in November 2013, one of the strongest ever storms to hit land, leaving more than 7,350 peo- ple dead or missing. Total damage and losses reached 571.1 billion pesos ($12.9 billion), cut- ting economic growth by about 0.9 percent in 2013, and another 0.3 percent in 2014, pushing about 2.3 million people below the poverty line as a result, the bank said. Typhoons Koppu and Melor, the two latest extreme weather events that hit the Philippines this year, claimed nearly 100 lives combined according to official counts. KUWAIT: Hyundai Motor’s Genesis and Tucson have been rec- ognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2016 Top Safety Pick+ awards. This prestigious awards body helps consumers select vehicles that offer the highest level of crash protection by conducting extensive testing and award- ing those which are worthy. Jin (James) Kim, Vice President and Head of Operations at Hyundai Motor Company Africa and Middle East said: “Our company’s emphasis on safety is once again highlighted as two very different models, one an SUV and one a luxury sedan, are internationally recognized for their advanced safety technologies. The features which I think have helped us secure these awards are elements such as the autonomous emer- gency braking feature, lane departure warning with lane keep assist and the emergency brake assist offering.” Adrian Lund, IIHS president commented on the rationale behind the Hyundai recognition: “The Genesis is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), nine airbags and ener- gy-absorbing front airbags, while the Tucson has AEB, helping these vehicles earn our top rating. Winners of the Top Safety Pick+ award must earn good ratings for occupant protection in all five of the evalua- tions.
