Understanding Bully PreventionThis session will review research and strategies that relate to the understanding and prevention of bullying. The participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion about local, state and national efforts to assess the successes of programs that may be involved in developing and/or expanding programs for bully prevention in schools. In addition, this session will discuss literature and “first-hand” experiences with “empowering the bystander” by teaching and encouraging “upstanding” behaviors to help prevent bullying.

Making the Connection: The Essential TriangleThis session is all about making the connection between family, child (student) and the school. The impact of engaging the “ESSENTIAL TRIANGLE” to maximize the successes of each child in school will be the main topic of discussion. We’ll discuss what parents can and should do to be connected with their child’s school community; and we’ll share ideas and initiatives that lead our schools to offer opportunities to become a sharing and family-friendly community. Each participant will be provided with many activity-based ideas and initiatives to incorporate at school and community.

Games That Make You Go “Ah!”Engage in a variety of fantastic cooperative games and super team building activities that will surely make you go “AH”. The games and activities presented will fit all age groups from kindergarten through high school. (Percy even uses these with his college students, and they love them!)

Tackling the Text: Using Annotation to Help Students Better Understand Complicated TextIf you’ve ever asked a middle school student to highlight a text as they read, you have probably noticed that they often highlight the entire text or they don’t take the cap off of the pen. In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to help students to annotate and interact with text by using five strategies we know all good readers use.

Socratic Questioning: A Student-Centered Approach to Addressing HOT QuestionsSocratic Seminars enable students to seek a deeper understanding of text by exploring higher order thinking (HOT) questions through thoughtful dialogue. In this intro- ductory workshop, participants will learn strategies that will help students create HOT questions and conduct Socratic Seminars. We will also discuss resources that will help students prepare for seminar discussions and tips that will help you manage those seminars.

Middle School Debate 101We all know middle school students love to talk and love to argue even more. Put that passion for argument to work for you in your classroom by conducting debates with your students. They will sharpen their research, reading, writing, critical thinking and oratory skills all while having fun and gaining real-world experience. In this session, you will learn about strategies for preparing students for debate, easy ways to plan for and structure debates, and helpful resources.

Students Asking Questions: The QFT ModelQuestioning, especially student questioning, is a major trend in education. The book, Making Just One Change, gives detailed instructions on how to implement the Question Formulation Technique (QFT). It is a simple and easy-to-replicate process, based on research from the Right Question Institute. http://rightquestion.org/. This is a hands-on session using QFT with participants, showing how they can make connections and how this can be implemented in their classrooms.

Literacy Strategies for the Social Studies ClassroomEach Social Studies class offers teachers an opportunity to teach literacy through using their content. Mentoring: The Way to Grow and Keep New TeachersResearch shows that teacher retention is higher when new teachers receive support. Participants will examine materials that can be used for mentor programs and exchange ideas about how to develop a program that fits the needs of their school.

Picture This: Students Finding Evidence to Defend a ClaimWriting is a tough thing for many students. Research is even more painful. This introductory lesson uses pictures books to help students learn how to 1) make a claim, 2) find evidence to support a claim, and 3) defend a claim using the evidence they found. This is a hands-on, practical session where participants will go through the process and come away with graphic organizers for their classroom.

Building Relationships Through ClubsUse of clubs is an excellent way to build relationships among students and between teachers and students. In this interactive session, you will learn about the variety of clubs as you rotate through stations. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about logistics, interact with other participants, and create a plan for implementation.

Effective LeadershipDr. Vincent will continue the discussion of the research findings presented in the “Why Black Boys Fight . . . and Other Unanswered Questions” session. This time will give participants the opportunity to ask questions, share successes, analyze reasons for findings, and reach an understanding of the perpetual need to meet African American male students’ emotional and academic needs.

The African American Male: Student’s Guide to Great Teaching Often, educators guess at what ALL students need to be successful. We try one strategy; it does not work; we try a different strategy; and it does not work. This session offers participants real insight into the minds of African American male students who answer this question for us: “What makes a great teacher?” You will be amazed at the answers, suggestions, needs, and desires from African American male students who range from honor students to those previously expelled. Are you looking for answers? We have them for you.

When Girls FightGirl Fight! It is the worst thing to have to break up. Neither girl wants to stop fighting and that is obvious! More than that, it takes several staff members to break it up. For many years, we have wondered what makes girls fight at school. Is it the boys? Is it reality TV? Is it the neighborhood expectation? This session will answer many questions about why girls fight at school, what starts the fight, and what finishes it. When asked what teachers and administrators can do to prevent fights, the girls very candidly describe what they need from school personnel. Get insight into the girls’ thoughts, feelings, and reasons for fighting each other.
