PERSONAL BESTS (PBS) & READING It has been interesting collecting our whole school data over the past couple of weeks to see how many of our students are reading at least 5 nights a week. I have to say that it has been pretty disappointing to see that only than half of our students in Years 3-6 are actually reading five or more nights a week. I am hoping that my message at Monday’s assembly, regarding the importance of reading will encourage more of our students to consistently read. We know that through reading we give our children a chance to succeed in all areas of life. I love Obama’s quote…

TEDDY BEARS PICNIC – Friday from 2.30pm We will once again be holding our special ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ event tomorrow from 2.30-3pm. We are encouraging our preps to bring along their favourite teddy bear for an afternoon of fun and games. Our local pre-schoolers and kinder kids have been invited along too! If you have a 3 or 4 year old child, you are welcome to come along and join us! Annual General Meeting/SCHOOL COUNCIL

The Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) and Annual Report will be presented to the school community as part of the AGM on Wednesday 21 March at 6:00pm, in the staffroom. Our School Council meeting will follow the AGM. Parents are welcome to the AGM. Please ring/email the school office if you would like to attend. Please note that our new school council members will be residing from this meeting onwards.

Homework Tips! Helping your child with homework shows your kids that you are taking an active interest in what they do and helps set them up with study and organisational skills. Tips for completing homework: Be a good role model for your child and assist them in developing a good homework habit that will set them up for life. Show your child that you value their education and their homework. Reading books, writing shopping lists and balancing budgets demonstrates to your child the skills that they are learning by doing homework and that they will use as an adult.

1. Set aside a regular time: a time that suits your child and the family is best. Although, there

may be times due to other commitments, like sport, where you may need to be flexible.

2. Have a ‘homework’ spot: it should be neat and tidy, with everything you may need to use

handy. It should be a relatively quiet place with plenty of light too.

3. Switch off: turn off the TV or any other things that could be a distraction.

4. Be supportive: monitor what your child is doing but do not complete tasks for them. Talk

about what they need to do complete the activity. Encourage them and praise them for their

work.

Overall, encourage good study habits in your child and help them learn valuable organisational skills. If you have any questions about homework please see your class teacher to clarify expectations. This week at assembly, Grade 5/6D shared their memories from last year and spoke about what they have done so far. They also spoke about what they are looking forward to this year, about what drives them and what they are passionate about. It was great to hear them speak about the exciting teaching and learning that we have happening in our school for example the 6 + 1 writing traits and our approach to mathematics.

Thanks

Carolyn

Student Representative Council and Sustainability Group – 2018 Applications

We would like to thank all students who applied for either SRC, Sustainability Group or both positions! We are overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of applications we received this year from our Year 2 – 6 students. We commend so many students for the initiative, dedication and enthusiasm they are willing to offer in order to run these programs for our school community. Students selected for both groups will receive their badges at assembly on Monday 19th March at 2:45pm. We hope unsuccessful applicants will reapply next year. The selection criteria for SRC and Sustainability Group are:

1. A written application detailing why students wish to participate, what personal

qualities, behaviours, interests and experience they have to offer, and what

they hope to learn from participating.

2. Students were then shortlisted based on their application.

3. Previous involvement in either groups considered. We are keen to provide as

many students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and their

genuine passion for supporting community programs and caring for our

environment.

4. Students who demonstrate initiative and genuine interest in the role.

5. Consistently displaying our school expectations, always being responsible,

respectful and inclusive

We look forward to a productive year ahead working with all our students. SRC and Sustainability Group Coordinators

What a fabulous evening we all had a Twilight Sports on Friday. The weather was very kind to us with some extra cloud cover and it was sensational to see so many families attending this event. The house spirit was shown by students and parents alike, with so many people wearing their house colours. The students all had an amazing time with much fun being had during the novelty races. Teamwork was a must and to hear all the students cheering on their fellow house members was great. Thank you to the parent’s association in particular for selling drinks on the night. A huge thank you to staff that attended and helped with the organisation of the event. Congratulations must go to the dads for winning the mums vs dads tunnel ball event and it was again great to see so many parents getting involved in this fun event. Thank you also to our school leaders/house captains for attending the night and helping out. And last but not least congratulations to Kookaburras for winning overall on the night. The final results are below.

1st Place – Kookaburras– 475 points 2nd Place – Wallabies- 460 points

3rd Place –– Dolphins – 430 points 4th Place – Opals – 358 points

Extend OSHC at Mount Waverley Heights Primary School

Hi everyone!

Last week the children loved making Banana and Coconut Muffins. It is great to see the children try new recipes and enjoy their cooking, especially when they end up liking

ingredients they don't normally eat. We had some awesome board games created by the children on Tuesday. It was great to see the creativity in their different games, which we

enjoyed playing throughout the week. On Wednesday the children grew their own crystals. Each child could shape their own pipe-cleaner and put it in a special solution. The next day we had crystals!! The children love being able to watch how chemicals react and are also

excited to see the end result. Natasha and Issy taught us all how to finger knit which was a lot of fun. It was great to see the children step-up and lead an activity and see the other children enjoy learning how to finger knit bracelets and necklaces. On Friday we had our

third session of chess club with a great turn out! The children have absolutely loved learning how to play chess and it is so exciting to see how much they have learnt in a small amount of time! Jocelyn ran her first Yoga class, which was really fun to participate in. We're looking

forward to making up some yoga cards to expand our yoga moves!

Coming up next week:

Monday 12: Cooking: Baked Potatoes, Sports Clinic By Jake G Tuesday 13: Imagination Creation, Ball Sports Wednesday 14: Science: Volcano, Playground

Thursday 15: Table Soccer, Group games Friday 16: Specialist afternoon: Chess Club, Yoga By Jocelyn

AND OUR EXTEND SUPER-STAR OF THE WEEK IS.....

JAKE G 5/6

Stepping up into a leadership role and running sports clinics on a Monday, and for also helping to pack away and set up in the mornings. It is a great help and we really

appreciate it!

From Caitlin and the kids at Extend. :)
