21st Century tools at Maroubra Bay This week we are very excited to introduce new technologies into our classrooms and community, designed to inform, educate, collaborate and engage at a much higher level than ever before. 

For students in Years 5 and 6, we are rolling out Chromebooks into the classrooms. We currently have 16 Chromebooks that students will be accessing for their Google Classroom lessons each week. This is an exci ng shi  in how students collaborate, communi‐cate, create and innovate and will assist them in their journey towards High School. Both students and staff are very excited by this development. 

 

 

For parents, this week we launched our official Instagram and Facebook pages which the community can follow and like. We see these pages as a much 

more instant form of communica on, highligh ng the various ac vi es at school, giving parents quicker messages and another way to feel part of the journey at Maroubra Bay. We hope the community embrace these new tools of communica on. 

These Social Media pages are official departmental pages and are the responsibility of the Principal. Parents can like or comment on our posts, however they cannot make posts themselves on our 

pages. The school Social Media Policy 2016 is available on our website (Our School: School Policies) as well as in our front office. 

As with all new ini a ves, especially in the communica on area, the school takes very seriously parents wishes in terms of permission to publish. Only the Principal and Assistant Principal can upload images and messages onto social media and are well aware of any students that do not have permission for images to be taken. If you are unsure or would like to discuss this issue, please come up and see the Principal at any stage. 

Temora West PS Camp On Monday, 16 of our Year 4 and 5 students will travel with Mr McFadyen and Mrs Jovanovska to Temora in south west NSW. They will spend all week visi ng the school, the local mine and area in an environmental camp thanks to Randwick Council. We wish them all the very best on this fantas c opportunity.

Flashing Lights on Duncan St This week our school received confirma on that addi onal school zone flashing lights will soon be installed to protect Maroubra Bay Public School on Duncan St.  

We welcome these addi onal lights and hope that they provide further safety to our students that come to school and leave to go home using Duncan St. 

The project will be completed within the next 9 months. 

        Croissants in the Garden: Tues 8 Nov Anglican scripture teachers invite their scripture students and parents for breakfast in the garden on Tuesday November 8 any me from 8.30am to 9.00am. Croissants with jam plus juice.  

Come and meet the teachers and say hello. 

If it rains we will be under the undercover area in the garden. 

 

            

  

Halloween Art 4/5D got spooky on Monday when they created some Hallow‐een themed origami bookmarks.  

Now there are vampires, spiders, man‐ea ng frogs and dragons all over our books. Here are a few pictures of our work.  If you wish to try this at home then all you need to type into pinterest.com  is ‘origami bookmarks’. There are easy to follow procedures on how to make these bookmarks on many of the links.

General Informa on  

Temora West Camp Update Students are having a fabulous  me at the Temora West PS camp this week. Lots of awesome ac vi es and mee ng the students from the other school, Mrs Jovanovska and Mr McFadyen are so proud of how the students are interac ng and ge ng the most out of this experience. 

The bus is expected back at school for 3.00pm Friday, the school app will be used to alert parents if there is a change of me.

Selec ve High School Applica ons 2018 Applica ons for parents of Year 5 students who wish to apply for their child’s entry into a selec ve High School in 2018 close on Monday 14 November 2016. Please note that late applica‐ons will not be accepted. Notes about the process of applying 

have been distributed to all Year 5 students and brochures con‐taining further details have been provided to families who have indicated that they will be applying for admission into a Selec‐ve High School. Applica ons must be made online and further 

informa on is available at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement If you have any ques ons about the process please contact Mr Gigli.  

School Captain Elec ons 2017 Thank you to all those students who returned their expressions of commitment in standing for election as a 2017 School Cap‐tain. Our 2017 candidates are Joshua A, Dayne D, Kai J, Marley L, Rose C, Cleo G, Meggy G, Sahana N, Isabel N and Luisa P. Stu‐dents are currently working on their posters, which are due in on Friday 4th November. Copies of speeches must be submitted to Mr Ackerman and Mr Gigli by Friday 11th November.  We wish all candidates the very best throughout the election process.  

SRC Environmental Tip The SRC have been looking at our schools environmental pro‐grams; par cularly on making our recycling more efficient.  Be‐cause we are being a recycling focussed group we thought we would put in a weekly  p to help with the cause.  This  p of the week will appear in the newsle er for the next few weeks. 

The focus for this week is reducing. 

Stainless steel bo les are reusable and last a long  me.  

Many students currently use so  plas c bo les which they dispose a er about a week. 

Rethink what you are buying in regards to packaging and food. 

Try Snack Pockets for lunches.  This is a great alterna ve to plas c wraps.  They are not only environmentally friendly but a great cost cu er

PSSA Last Week  

PSSA This Week The PSSA compe on con nues  tomorrow. As always we  look forward  to  seeing  many  parents,  carers  and  friends  at  our games suppor ng our teams.  

Senior AFL Report          Last Friday the horn sounded for the 1st third of the match be‐tween Maroubra Bay and Pagewood in senior AFL. Unfortunate‐ly, we were down three players, but we s ll managed to put up a  strong  fight  against  Pagewood.  At  the  end  of  the  1st  third Maroubra Bay was down 20‐7. With  a  few  swoops Maroubra Bay managed to get back on track, scoring 2 goals straight away in the 2nd third. By the end of the 2nd third we were s ll trailing Pagewood 33‐31.  In the final quarter we managed some excel‐lent handpasses and kicks, and by the  me  it was  full  me we won with a score of 46‐35. We would like to thank Mr Crowther for umpiring the game.  Marley L and Kai J

5/6G Report This term students have been par cipa ng  in the Tools for Transi on program.  

Students have been focusing on the idea of mindfulness, a prac ce  that  trains  the brain  to  slow down and pro‐cess  sensory data. They have prac sed mindful aware‐ness through deep belly breathing. Focusing on breath‐ing  can help  calm  the body by  slowing  the heart  rate, lowering  blood  pressure,  and  sharpening  focus.  Con‐trolled breathing also calms the body and mind and de‐creases  anxiety.  This  helps  the  brain  to  become more reflec ve and less reac ve.  

Over  me,  this  strengthens  neural  pathways  and  con‐nec ons  and mindful  awareness moves  from  being  a state to a  long‐term trait. The breathing exercises have taught  students  that  the  breath  helps  to  regulate  the body and that each of us has more control over our bod‐ies than we think. 

Students have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and are looking forward to con nuing to develop skills that will help them to take control over their minds and bodies in the coming years.
