Thursday 20th November 2014 Maths at home
Kids' early experiences with measurement are often based on
watching their parents. Seeing mum or dad measure and pour
ingredients for a recipe or weigh items at the fruit shop will often
become part of their play.

Student Leaders
The process for selecting student leaders for 2015 has
commenced, with interested year 5 students having nominations
supported by both peers and a parent before attending an interview
to discuss leadership opportunities in 2015. 19 students are
campaigning for school leadership positions next year, currently
working on a poster, preparing a badge to identify them and a
speech to be presented on Wednesday 10th December at 12pm.
Following this speech the K-5 students will vote for student leaders
for 2015, with the 6 students attracting the most votes being
nominated as leaders. These 6 students will be selected based on
voting without a gender bias. The two students with the most votes
will become our school captains. It is possible that the leadership
team in 2015 may comprise of a number of combinations of male
and female students, or may in fact be all female or all male. It is
important for us to send a message to our students that
opportunities are available based on one’s own merit rather than
gender.
Tea Towels
The proofs for tea towels have arrived—the P&C anticipate that the
tea towels will arrive at school prior to the end of term.

2015 Planning
The funding and staffing of Public schools is based on a range of
factors, the most significant being the number of students en-
rolled and the corresponding number of classes required to sup-
port enrolled students. An increase or decrease in student num-
bers impacts not only the physical and financial resources re-
quired to operate the school but also impacts upon the person-
nel, with an increase in numbers resulting in additional staff ap-
pointed and a decrease in numbers triggering staff transfer. Our
organisation for 2015 is well under way but we need to be very
precise with our student enrolment to ensure appropriate plan-
ning. I ask for families intending on leaving our area before the
commencement of the 2015 school year to advise the school and
for any outstanding enrolments to be completed ASAP to allow
us to finalise plans.

Gold Medal Correction
Our last newsletter contained a list of students under the
heading “Congratulations to the following students for receiving
their Gold PBL Awards”. The list contained was a provisional
list and may have contained the names of some students who
are still on their Gold Medal journey. Students will know when
they have achieved their gold medal based on their PBL books
and will receive gold certificates in class throughout the term.
Teachers will be able to clarify each child’s progress if asked.
My apologies for this error.
Stage 2 Incursion – The Colonial Days
Last Wednesday Years 3-5 participated in a super presentation
at school. Sergeant Kennedy and James Murphy transported us
back to England, over the seas on The First Fleet and into the
early penal colony in Australia. The day provided many laughs,
enjoyment, drama, games and of course… learning.
In England the law was very hash. When you stole something
the value of the item decided how much you got whipped.
Sometimes soldiers would use a special whip called a cat o nine
tails, it took chunks out of your skin and caused lots of pain.
The convicts on The First Fleet were in very cramped cells. As
they were so hungry they often didn’t tell the soldiers when
someone died just so they could still get their rations.
Life for a convict in Australia was very hard. Skilled labourers
had some opportunities to work for money and eventually earn
their own land to work.
We enjoyed skipping, throwing the horseshoe, competing
against the other boats and hearing all the gory stories. It was a
fun day with many people dressed in olden day clothing.
