IEW – Beautiful Feet Teacher: Joy Davis

Guess what? The amazing history/geography-based writing lessons incorporating Beautiful Feet Books is HERE! Geography, science, history, and writing instruction is included in the course curriculum. The classic works, “Seabird” and “Minn of the Mississippi” MUST be purchased for this class. Again, I recommend online, used book sites to purchase (Thriftbooks.com) the books cheaply. Most libraries offer the books. The lesson book from IEW need NOT be purchased for the class-only the readers. While students learn geography and history from the Newberry and Caldecott award winning works, we will focus upon the principles of writing with style and structure. We will discover and discuss ALL aspects of American wildlife, opening of new frontiers, transportation, industry and systems, and heroic struggles. Note: parents are encouraged to read with or to their students if needed. Ages: 6-9 Monthly Tuition: $35 Minimum: Semester Supply Fee: $25 Maximum: Supplies Required:

• Seabird by Clancy Holling • Minn of Mississippi by Clancy Holling

Swimming Creatures / Oceanography Teacher: Rhonda Frantz, RCS, RVS

We will explore the ocean and river floors while studying God’s creatures who call them home. Students will create an interactive notebook of the ocean floor and its animals. We will investigate swimming creatures from the microscopic plankton to enormous whales, as well as beautiful coral reefs. Did you know only 5% of the ocean floor has been explored? Each lesson ends with an experiment or project reinforcing the scientific method and the concepts studied. We will look at specimens, fossils, teeth, and shells under the microscope. Students LOVE the hands-on dissections. Students will be encouraged to research and report on a sea animal. I will be using Exploring Creation with Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day as my main spine. CLASS DISSECTIONS: Shark, clam, squid with ink, and crayfish

George Barna, researcher and data analyst, claims that 4% of Gen Z Students have a biblical worldview. Teaching students to think biblically in relation to the culture in which they live is vital. In today’s media-saturated world, students most often lack meaningful engagement with cultural issues. Because of this, the bulk of class time will be spent mostly in discussing a wide range of today’s cultural issues. Videos that correspond to the curriculum, tests, quizzes, and writing assignments will be utilized as well.

Page 11: RCHA 2020 / 2021 Class Descriptions MASTER LIST...finished John Thompson’s Easiest Piano ourse Part one and John Thompson’s Modern ourse For the Piano Teaching Little Fingers to

Mature topics such as abortion, sexual brokenness, pornography, and other difficult issues will be covered and discussed per the curriculum. Parents & students will have access to the curriculum & videos to view at home throughout the year. We desire and encourage parents to watch some of the videos and engage in discussion with your student over what they are learning. Parents have discretion over what credits are earned in this course and recorded on the student’s transcript at the end of the year. That being said, high school is a time students are learning self-motivation, self-discipline, pushing themselves to rise to new challenges that benefit their character, build skills needed for life, and future college if they choose that path. For this reason, serious grades will be given. A mandatory parent/student orientation two weeks before class starts is required to hand out class syllabus and set clear expectations. Essay guidelines will be discussed as well. Essays will be graded with the goal of helping students to become better writers. Occasionally students can expect oral presentations, guest speakers, field trips that reinforce Biblical world-views, and service opportunities throughout the year to engage students with the culture in memorable ways. We are excited to build a biblical worldview into your student’s faith so they can be confident in knowing what they believe and compassionately engage a lost and broken world for Jesus Christ. RCHA Reader’s Theater Teacher: Kate Kobussen

"Reader's theater allows children the luxury of lingering over a story; acting it out many times so they come to understand all of its nuances. Too often, children read a story and only understand it at its most superficial literal level. With reader's theater, they're not just reading a story; they're living it." Equal parts Theater and Reading Fluency Building - Reader’s Theater will allow your students to become part of the action! Every couple of weeks, a new script will be assigned about a different topic (from various holidays to real life situations to history…even TEXAS history!). Students will read and re-read each script, playing their parts with pizazz and flair! At the end of each semester, we will select our FAVORITE story and invite parents and guests to our “RCHA Reader’s Theater” complete with simple costumes and props (most likely brought from home…). This class is sure to make students more comfortable with reading aloud as well as accurately presenting their ideas to an audience. SRA – Reading Comprehension Teacher: Peggy Esters

Sometimes when students learn to read, they can finish reading something, and not retain or grasp fully what it says. This class is designed to move the reading student into greater information retention. The SRA Reading Lab Program was once used regularly in Texas schools in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Tried and true, this scientific method is designed to sequentially move the reader to greater comprehension, attention to details, and inference skills. Retaining information is the key to reading success. This SRA Lab is for students whose reading comprehension needs improvement between the 2nd and 7th grade levels. Biology Teacher: TBA

Apologia Biology assumes that God is the creator of all life, not that life just happened or that one kind of animal evolved into a different kind of animal. While the creationist view is evident throughout the book, Chapter 9 is a 30+ page discussion of the theory of evolution compared to the theory of creation.

The course is designed specifically for use in a homeschool. The authors assume no prior knowledge of the subject, and the course is written in an easy-to-understand, conversational style. Nonetheless, it is a serious biology text - one of the co-authors was formerly a university science professor. The course contains 16 chapters, or modules, discussing every topic you would expect in a high school biology course. The book contains a variety of drawings and photographs, both color and black-and-white.

While lab work can be more challenging in a homeschool environment, and the authors have made allowances for this fact in their course. Lab information will be thoroughly explained and discussed in class. Sometimes, a lab will be included during a class period, with lab write-ups completed at home.

The course comes with two components. The student text includes all student reading, experiments, "On Your Own" exercises (with answers and discussion later in the chapter), and 15 to 25 "Study Guide" questions at the end of each chapter.

The Great American Story: A Land of Hope Teacher: Mark Turner

John Adams spoke after Washington's death: Washington's example is complete, Adams said,

Page 26: RCHA 2020 / 2021 Class Descriptions MASTER LIST...finished John Thompson’s Easiest Piano ourse Part one and John Thompson’s Modern ourse For the Piano Teaching Little Fingers to

"and it will teach wisdom and virtue to magistrates, citizens, and men, not only in the present age, but in future generations, as long as our history shall be read." President Ronald Reagan once said: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." What Reagan meant is that it is not enough to pass liberty on to the next generation, we must also prepare that generation to preserve and pass on liberty themselves. Not that long ago, Americans couldn't have imagined a day when our nation's great history ceased to be read. Today, sadly, it is no longer hard to imagine. A recent study found that 75% of students did not know all three branches of government. Meanwhile, 37% could not name one right guaranteed by the 1st Amendment! Too many young Americans do not learn what makes America an exceptional nation and a beacon of liberty for the world. Too many young Americans are taught that our nation's past holds no positive lessons which we can apply moving forward, if they are taught history at all. So, is it any wonder that so many younger Americans today feel less of a patriotic attachment to their country and an increasing attraction to socialism and other ideas destructive of liberty? This course presents a full, unbiased account of America's past. With a clear and proper understanding of our great heritage of liberty represented, this course will promote the kind of intelligent patriotism among our young people that is essential to preserving free government, and will help restore civic knowledge that leads to informed patriotism and makes self-government possible. This is our surest means of preserving liberty. For example, this course is a powerful counterweight to The New York Times recent 1619 Project, which seeks to inject the idea that America is an essentially unjust nation into the curricula of America's K-12 schools' education that many Americans feel has been in decline for decades, even as more and more tax dollars have been thrown at it. In this insightful course we will explore the deeply negative impact that today’s politically correct society has had on American historical education – and offer solutions to restoring history and civics as a key component of good citizenship.
