THURSDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2017 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Tena koutou katoa Scholarship Successes—Last week, we were very excited to learn that eight NZ Scholarships were achieved for 2016. This is an outstanding result for Craighead. Congratulaons to Toral Tailor (Design), Emilie Agnew and Nicola Pedlow (Biology), Anna Breen and Louise Goodwin (English), Charloe Cumming (Art History) and Thirada (Yaya) Chanawichote (Design and Graphics). Yaya (right) deserves special menon, gaining two scholarships and building upon the Graphics scholarship obtained while in Year 12, the previous year. Scholarship requires a huge commitment over and above regular Level Three studies. Obtaining a scholarship is something of which to be very proud! Thanks go to our subject teachers who inspired, encouraged and supported the girls along the way. Staffing—We warmly welcome Mrs Linda Hepburn to Craighead as a part- me Teacher Aide. A former Craighead parent, Linda has had over eight yearsexperience with Literacy South Canterbury. We are very fortunate to have secured someone with considerable learning support experience. We also welcome ex-student Faith Turner-Walker back to Craighead. Faith will replace Mrs Janine McIvor as an evening prep supervisor in the Boarding House from Monday to Thursday, supporng students in Years 7 to 9. A capable academic and keen sportswoman, Faith was Deputy Sacristan last year. She is having a gap year before travelling overseas. We wish Mrs McIvor all the best as she moves to full me employment in counselling. Year 13 Scholarship—Each year we have a very strong field of applicants for the Year 13 Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is intending to undertake terary study upon leaving school, who has shown a commitment to taking responsibility for her own academic learning, and who has contributed to the sporng or cultural life of the school. The Craighead community is one I am proud to be a part of, and I feel extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to be Deputy Head Girl this year. She won eight Naonal tles and was excited to achieve two new Naonal records in the NZ Road Championships 200m me trial and the NZ Banked Track Championships 500m. She is now training for the Oceania Compeon in Brisbane in April. TENNIS Kate Crawford, (Y9, right) was selected in the NZ U13 Tennis team to compete in Australia in December 2016 where they finished third overall. Kate paired up with an Auckland player to win the U12 Doubles tle. Lucy Crawford (Y8) qualified for the U12 Tennis Naonal Championships, held in Auckland in January. Meet Laura Zonnevylle—Deputy Head Girl 2017

I came to Craighead as a Year 7 student in 2011, feeling incredibly excited to be surrounded by not only new people, but new learning opportunities as well. I soon realised that Craighead has many academic, cultural, and sporting opportunities available for girls of all abilities, which gave me the confidence to participate in a range of activities.

Throughout my time at Craighead, I have been a committed member of the Student Council, Kapa haka and Film Club. I have entered Music Cup and have socially participated in Netball, Touch and Badminton. This year, I look forward to joining the Magazine and Global Citizen committees and becoming a Peer Support Leader.

I am also looking forward to supporting Annabelle, as I know she will be a fantastic leader of our school. I feel privileged to be a part of such a strong group of Year 13 students, who are good role models and ambassadors for our school. She won eight National titles and was excited to achieve two new National records in the NZ Road Championships 200m time trial and the NZ Banked Track Championships 500m. CDS ONSTAGE! TURLEY AUDITORUM

10-13 May 2017

Auditions were held last week for the school’s musical production, CDS Onstage!. The production team was thrilled with the large number of girls who auditioned, particularly in the junior school, and would like to congratulate all of them for their well prepared and entertaining performances. Rehearsals are now underway for the cast of 36 singers and dancers as they prepare for Opening night on Wednesday 10 May.

Come and hear Katrina speak on sports nutrition to provide energy for life through healthy eating, focusing on athletes from both team and individual sports. All coaches, managers, athletes, parents and friends are invited and encouraged to attend.

The Careers Department is presently customising a web based career management programme for use at Craighead. AORAKI TENNIS

On Tuesday this week, Kate Crawford, Anna Brosnahan, Faith McManus, Kate Harvey, Sophie Lightbourne and Elsie Love represented Craighead at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Tennis tournament in Timaru. Kate, Anna, Faith and Kate

played well against tough opposition from Waitaki Girls’ High School placing second in the A Grade Girls’ section. Elsie and Sophie played in B Grade Doubles matches against Roncalli, Geraldine High School and two Mt Hutt College teams, beating Geraldine and Mt Hutt 1. They were placed third overall in the B Grade section—a well-deserved result.

ITINERANT MUSIC LESSONS

Once again, many girls are taking advantage of the itinerant instrumental lessons, with long waiting lists in some areas. It is important that those fortunate enough to have lessons should make every effort to attend all lessons, arrive on time and practise regularly. Permission slips must be returned to Mrs McLeod by 1 March. The itinerant teachers are:

Boarding Parents Forum and Morning Tea—All Boarding parents and caregivers are invited to attend a Boarding Forum to be held during Athletic Sports on Friday 3 March at 10.00am, in the Pavilion at Aorangi Stadium. If you have any topics of discussion you would like raised please email them to me.

Bike Riding Safety Course—There are many risks associated with cycling, so all Year 9 boarders have the opportunity to take part in bike riding safety lessons with Police Educator WPC Marie Fround. These lessons are free and will run Wednesday 8 March at 3.30pm. I will send out further information in an email. If you feel that it would benefit your daughter to take part, please complete and return the form to the Boarding House by Friday 4 March. Forms can also be downloaded from the Craighead website under “Boarding” and “Forms”.
