CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER RETREAT

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE

Dear friends, We remind you this is the weekend to begin signing up for the

Sunday Scripture Sharing groups. Sign-up sheets are available after every mass this weekend and next. We encourage you to take ad-vantage of this fine Lenten opportunity for evangelizing ourselves, which has proven to be a fine experience for the dozens who en-gaged in it last year.

Speaking of evangelization: A stage on the way to Christian initi-ation is that of becoming a catechumen, that is, a candidate for full initiation into the Catholic Church. This year we have eight adults participating in the RCIA process in English and three in Spanish. Among them are two catechumens to be baptized this year, one of whom has already been installed as a catechumen and the other who will be so blessed today at the 11:15 Mass. Congratulations to Jamie, Victoria and to all the other adults who will be completing their initia-tion sacraments at Easter and Pentecost this year.

Another element of Christian life is good stewardship— of the

earth, of our household, of our bodies, and of course of our parish’s

temporal needs. The good people of Mount Carmel have sustained

the earthly necessities of pastoral work here for 175 years and con-

tinue to do so today, both in weekly offerings and in major pledge

programs such as Generations of Faith and the Annual Catholic Ap-

peal. In the twenty-first century more and more parishes offer their

members the opportunity to donate electronically, and we do as well

with a highly secure electronic giving system called “Faith Direct”.

You will shortly be receiving in the mail the annual invitation to con-

sider making your weekly offerings electronically, as dozens of parish-

ioners here already do. Making your donations automatically means

relief from the hassle of locating your offertory envelopes as you run

out the door on Sunday morning, and guarantees that the church will

receive your gifts even if you are unable to attend Mass. There is no

fee to you, the parishioner, associated with use of the Faith Direct

program. Automatic contributions greatly benefit our parish by

providing a predictable cash flow as well as decreasing the time and

money the church expends dealing with the envelope system. Those

who choose to use their credit card also find the additional points

they receive to be a helpful dividend of their stewardship. Faith Di-

rect will provide you with personalized offertory cards that you may

place in the basket, and a year-end tax statement. We invite you to

consider seriously the use of Faith Direct.

God love you,

Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

Sean G. Ogle

BRING IN YOUR OLD PALMS

If you haven't done so already we ask that you bring your old palms so we may turn them into ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday.

PARISH BULLETIN BOARD LAY MINISTRY SUNDAY FEBRUARY 26:

Sunday, February 26, will be observed as “Lay Ministry Sunday” in the parishes of the Brooklyn Diocese in order to honor and emphasi-ze the role of the laity in living the mission of the church in our paris-hes. We are blessed in our parish with dozens of lay ministers—liturgical, catechetical, musical, ministers of mercy and good works, ministers of consolation, members of the finance and pastoral coun-cils, and more. We will offer them a special blessing at the 10 AM Mass on February 26 and invite as many as possible to be present with us on that occasion. We invite other parishioners also to serve more actively in these and other ministries. Please speak to any of our staff or current ministers to become more engaged. We also encourage parishioners to undertake the three-year lay leadership program of the Diocesan Pastoral Institute to gain a better founda-tion for undertaking these roles.
