Its December 19thand today we went on a 6motorcycle ride for the last Toy Run of the year. Yes!

Its been crazy busy and about a month since my last ride, so a br

from Christmas madness and publishing deadlines, involving a pu

the scoot was just what I needed. The air was crisp, about 50 deg

the sun was shining, and any time you can ride in December in C

with a couple hundred other riders, its a good day!

Weve blasted through the rst decade of the new millennium at

breakneck speed. Many of us are working harder than ever. With t

popularity of the Internet technological mobility, anyone in the prin

publication business has seen their one business turn into 2, with

websites, Facebook, Twitters, Tweets. No wonder Im tired! As so

quit chasing my tail, Ill try to gure out where the last ten years weI am saddened by the hardships of so many during this time in ou

country, yet Im hopeful for a brighter year ahead. Will the New Ye

be merely a changing of the calendar, or will it symbolize the start

something really? I choose to hope for the latter. Its been a tough

year for many, some events cancelled, others struggling to get the

sponsorship or necessary funding to support their causes, but we

also seen the ip side with i ncreased giving at others. The motorc

community is still going to give. Thats what we do. Many of us ha

be a bit more selective with the economic times we are in. We con

to meet the most amazing people in this business and truly appre

the support of all of our contributors, supporters and advertisers, m

    who have become our friends.

Theres a lot of work yet to do, but for now, I am content, I feel rev

after todays ride, equipped to tackle whats left of 2010 and lookin

    ahead to a bright 2011.

K99s Radio DJ, Charley Barnes knows how to draw a crowd. We estimatedmore than 500 riders and other participants at Charleys 5th Annual SleighRiders Motorcycle Toy Run. The staging began at 11:00 at Centennial Park in

Greeley, leather-clad riders in high spirits, drinking in the sun as mother naturegave us the gift of a great day to ride. The parking lot was a sea of red Santahats and bikes loaded with toys. The parade ride started at 12:30 with enoughGreeley squad cars to block every intersection and assist in escorting thecontinuous 2-lane stream of bikes on this years 10-mile route to the CactusCanyon, where Santa Cops loaded toys in a waiting van. A door prize ticket wasawarded for each toy.

    New Year

I was a little concerned about reading Lets Ride by Sonny Barger

because I thought it was a book for beginning riders. I have been

motorcycles for over 46 years. What am I going to get out of this b

    I dont already know?

Well guess what? You can teach old dog new tricks! I now have a

understanding of motorcycles and some new safety tips to keep m

in the jungle of cars and trucks that dont look for bikes. Lets Ride

of information for the rst tim e rider to the veteran rider. Sonny sta

the basic question why ride then r eviews the different types of b

motors available. This gives the reader the information they need

the bike that is right for them. Buying a bike and then realizing it is

enough or perhaps too big for you to handle could end up costing

of money. He teaches you what to look for when buying a new or

bike. Sonny gives you tips on how to acquire riding skills for survi

how to keep a bike operating safely and reliably. Lets Ride is a m

for anyone who is thinking about getting a bike and joining the bik

Those of us that have been riding for many years and think we kn

about riding should read the book. Sometimes we forget the basic

the safety tips in the book could help save your life. I enjoyed rea

Due to pigs dining habits, many countries, including Austria, Cuba, and

Spain, view pork as a good-luck food. As pigs root for food, they keep

their feet planted and push their snou ts forward, signifying progress and

    future prosperity.

    noodlES

In Japan Buckwheat Soba noodles are an important part of the Japa-

nese New Year celebrations. The long noodles are meant to symbolize

long life, and you should take care to eat them without breaking the

noodles. Buddhist Monks also eat a type of crunchy noodles at midnight

on New Years Eve, and in Buddhist temples bells are rung 108 times

    lEntilS

Thought to resemble coins, lentils are eaten throughout Italy for good

Greens, such as kale, collards, and cabbage, are traditionally eaten on

New Years Day because of their association with wealth and economic

prosperity. This good-luck food is the color of money.

A common good luck food in the southern United States, black-eyed

peas are thought to bring prosperity, their shape and abundance rep-

resenting coins. Hoppin John is the classic Southern New Years dish.

At midnight on New Years Eve, revelers in Spain and other Spanish-

speaking countries eat 12 grapes one for every strike of the clock

    and month in the year.

    Round CakES and BREadS

Eating round or ring-shaped cakes, pastries, and breads is a popular

New Years tradition in various countries. In Greece, families bake vas-

silopita, a cake containing a hidden good-luck coin. Italians eat sweet

panetonne, Mexicans enjoy the ring-shaped rosca de reyes cake, and

After breakfast, we all ride over to gather at the staging area. Since thToy Run, everything is new to me. Ive never seen so many bikers blife! From every direction, I hear the familiar sound of v-twin enginesthen more than a thousand converge on the parking lot of the High S

These bikers who I was warned about as a young girl, are not wbeen taught. What I see are smiles, people hugging one another, folhearts, up early on a Saturday morning, braving frigid temperaturesall to deliver toys to children in need. Burley bikers with scraggly beasudden are recognizable as slightly rough looking versions of St. Nicspirit of giving evident in their faces. As a painter of Saints...I am tranamong this group of people, so often represented in a negative way bI see the true spirit of Christian giving and of Christmas.

As more bikers arrive, Gary tells me to listen as the crowd growthunder? he says...and I do. It vibrates in my chest, surrounds eveominous and wonderful all at the same tim e. In the last month, Ive begun to learn a lotwhile riding on the back of the G-mansbike. Ive learned not to over steer (totrust God more), to judge people lesswith my eyes and more with my heart, notto miss living fully out of fear, that manybikerslike Gary are actually commit-ted warriors for Christ and that friend-ship and family in whatever form is sucha blessing. etting older (arent we all?), and my vision aint what it used to be. Not even. I nd I have to be more alert and pro-active in order to successfully deal withtial hazards when I ride, especially at night.

ll know that many motorists dont see motorcycles in time (or at all), and asverage age of drivers increases, we can assume that, since their vision isg worse, so is the problem of not being noticed when we ride. Visibility itst both seeing and being seen.

y I have been on a quest to improve my visibility when I am on my bikes. Idone some research into cost-effective ways to improve the lighting on my, and Id like to share that now. The rst bike I am working on is my main ride,3 Harley FLHTI (ElectraGlide). But the make and model doesnt matter muche purposes of this discussion because most of the improvements I have

en apply to almost any bike. My parameters are: cost, effectiveness of theng changes, electrical load on the charging system, and changes to the looke bike; I am not looking to make any signicant changes to its appearanceave extra lights hanging off the bike. I just want to i mprove on what is already First, I want to improve the headlight. I just bought a PIAA Xtreme Whitelight bulb (mine is type H4, but many other types are available). The factory

ulb that came on my bike is rated at 55 watts low beam/60 watts high beam.PIAA bulb has the same ratings, but is claimed to be twice as bright! So itdraw any more electrical power than the stock unit. I have not installed the

bulb yet, but I have high hopes that it will be a marked improvement. Theof the new bulb is about $50; if the manufacturers claims are true, I gurehe price is well worth it. I will carefully wrap up the old bulb and carry it inaddlebag just in case I need it. This type of improvement can be made onbikes.

ElectraGlide has a fender tip light on both the front and rear fenders; theyto be mostly decorative, and I dont think they really make the bike more

eable to drivers. I just found out about a company called Custom Dynamics.

They make lots of LED (light emitting diode) options for bikes. One of theirproducts replaces the wimpy #194 bulb that is used in both front and rear fendertip lights: it is an LED panel with 40 white LEDs on it and it ts underneath theexisting lens. I opted to install a clear front lens to replace the stock amber one.I have already done this modication (takes about 2 minutes with a single at-blade screwdriver, and costs $38 including the new lens); and it makes a hugeimprovement! Forty bright LEDs facing forward through a clear lens I am muchmore visible now. Another good thing about LEDs they draw a lot less powerthan incandescent light bulbs.

For the rear of the bike I tried a 4-LED replacement for the #194 bulb (also fromCustom Dynamics). Unfortunately, this mod was not a success. This new LED unitfaces upward, and it turns out that LED light is very directional; so the view of therear of the bike is not enhanced by this unit at all. The sixteen dollars were notwell-spent. They do make a 40-LED panel for the rear fender tip as well, so I maygo for that one soon; I know that will make a big difference.

I also bought a PIAA Xtreme White #1157 stop/taillight bulb to replace the stockbulb. Its rated at 27 watts pretty healthy for a taillight! I havent installed that oneyet, but I have high hopes for it. These are about $20 for a pair, and they shouldbe well worth it for cost-effectiveness. The extra one will go in the saddlebag, too. This bulb will draw more electrical power than the stock bulb, but not so much thatthe charging system will be taxed.

I will report on the effectiveness of both the headlight and tail/stoplight bulbs in mynext article if things go as planned. The only change to the look of the bike from

these modications is that I went from an amber fender tip light to a clear one, otherwise the bike looks stock.

There are many options for improvement to turn signals as well. But be awarethat when you change to LED turn signal bulbs you will most likely have to eitherchange your asher unit or install a load equalizer. Remember, the LED units useless power, and that will fool your stock asher unit into thinking that you have aburned out bulb. I have not made changes to my turn signals because of this, butI am giving it some thought.

A few other cautions: some LED lighting is not DOT approved (yet), so it comes inpackaging that says for off-road or show use. Some LED replacement bulbs arered or amber, and may not show well through your red or amber lenses. So eitherlook for a white LED bulb, or change the lenses to clear ones.

Do not handle halogen bulbs with your bare ngers, as it will reduce the l ongevityof the bulb. Any dirt or oils from your skin or other places are enemies of the bulb.

Amber lights can face any direction. Red faces the rear. White faces the front. You get the drill.

So far I have under $150 invested in improved lighting and I expect it to be moneywell-spent.

Stay tuned for the report next month.

Action Sports To Thank U.S. Troops During Bikes Over

    Baghdad 3 Tour

MILWAUKEE Holiday cheer will come early for some of the 50,000 U.S. andCoalition Armed Forces serving in the Middle East. T his November and Decem-ber, Harley-Davidson Motor Company is teaming up with Bikes Over Baghdadfor seven unforgettable and adrenaline-packed action sports performances atmilitary bases throughout Iraq and Kuwait, all with one mi ssion in mind: to thankour troops. Harley-Davidson shares a deep sense of freedom and patriotism withthe U.S. Armed Forces, and we are grateful for their many sacrices, dedica-tion and hard work, said Mike McCann, director of core customer marketing atHarley-Davidson. We have a long-standing relationship with the U.S. Military, and teaming up with Bikes Over Baghdad is a great way to show our apprecia-tion. We are honored and excited to be part of this tour.

Bikes Over Baghdad (BOB) is a BMX exhibition made up of an elite handful ofthe worlds best action sports athletes, announcers and ramp builders. The up-coming tour is the third of its kind, following two popular visits in 2009. McCannwill be joining the team November 28 through December 9 as they travel to Iraqand Kuwait to perform for an estimated 20,000 U.S. troops, most of whom havelittle or no access to entertainment of any kind.

For the athletes who make up the tour Chad Kagy, Brian Kachinsky, Mike Es-camilla, Anthony Napolitan, Drew Bezanson, Zack Yankush, Mykel Larrin, RonKimler and Nate Wessel BOB3 means putting their lives at risk to provide afew hours of escape, excitement, and camaraderie with those who have giveneverything to protect Americas freedom.

Our mission in Iraq is simple. We want to show the troops that we care, thatAmerica hasnt forgotten about them, said Brian Kachinsky, an X Games bronzemedalist who participated in the rst two BOB tours and calls the experienceexhilarating, intense and life-changing. Hell never forget performing in 120-de-gree heat and shaking hands with soldiers who thanked him for being there. Itscrazy when the troops thank us for performing, said Kachinsky. Were the oneswho should be thanking them. Theyre the real heroes, not us.

Kachinskys highlights of past BOB tours include ying in a Blackhawk helicop-ter, sleeping in Saddam Husseins palace, detonating C4 explosives, and expe-riencing what daily life is like for the troops in Iraq. But it was time simply spenthanging out with the troops, talking about their families, homes, and war zoneexperiences that really made an impact on BOB team m embers. They were toldtime and again by service men and women that, for just a few hours, they wereable to forget they were in Iraq.

The troops love the adrenaline and excitement of the Bikes Over Baghdadshows, said McCann. Its an incredible feeling for us to get to participate insomething that celebrates and shares the spirit of youthful adventure for whichHarley-Davidson has long been known.

McCann will give out free Harley-Davidson MotorClothes and other merchandiseand gifts at each performance. One service member will also win a brand new

Although year-to-date market data reveals an 18.3% drop in new unit sales, tire sales are up 6.6% in 2010 versus 2009, indicating motorcyclists are stillenthusiastic about the sport and riding. In addition, motorcycle miles travelled increased by approximately 5% last year, some 1.3 billion more miles than in 2008, according to the MICs 2009 MotorcycleOwner Survey. In many ways, we are better poised for a comeback than ever, said Ty vanHooydonk, communications director for the council.cHina BecoMeS tHe WorldS largeStMotorcycle producer

China has now overtaken Japan as the largest producer of motorcycles in theworld. Yearly, 50 million motorcycles are produced worldwide, and China nowproduces at least 27.5 million of that gure or a little more than 50% of the totalworld production. China has already taken over the top spot in world automobileproduction by producing more cars than Japan and the U.S. combined.Interestingly, some historic American companies like Harley-Davidson are movingahead for plans to produce motorcycles in China, but whether they will be exportedto the U.S. or simply sold in this Asian market is not quite known yet.The city of Chongqing has become Chinas motorcycle production center, withmore than 10 million motorcycles a year coming out of this modern city alone. In fact, four of ve of the largest Chinese motorcycle brands that produce over1 million units a year come out of this city. China has more than 130 motorcyclebrands.Expect to see more powerful and modern motorcycles coming from China as thisnation seeks to become the largest and most powerful economy in the world.

In Lagos, Nigeria, motorcycle taxis called okada are so dangeroushospitals have special orthopedic wards meant just for people who haccidents while riding them. So youd think a law requiring passenghelmets would be welcomed. But it turns out that, for many Nigerians, the only thing scarier than ataxi is a motorcycle helmet. Many people refuse to wear them out of fesupernatural powers. Some fret that previous passengers may have p

Pethat if you put on a helmet, [others] can take away your brain, oluck, he told the Wall Street Journal, so the hygienic cap provides a separation between the head and a helmet full of potential trouble.

National Highway Trafc Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ignoredressional requests to halt or delay a plan to implement and fund motorcycle-checkpoints nationwide.rst federally-funded checkpoints, dubbed roadside motorcycle safetykpoints, will be launched by the Georgia Department of Public Safety,NHTSA grant to the Georgia State Patrol. NHTSA has implemented the

kpoint funding plan despite being asked by members of Congress not to fundrogram until the merits were explained.SA has requested applications from law enforcement agencies across thery to conduct safety checks that specically target motorcyclists to pull

ntSB callS For StateS to requireHelMetS

The National Transportation Safety Board stated on Tuesday, November 19, thatall states should require riders to wear federally approved helmets.Christopher A. Hart, the NTSBs vice chairman, called motorcycle accidents apublic health issue. and said that helmet laws have been added for the rst timeto the NTSBs Most Wanted List of safety improvement priorities. The list isconsidered a powerful tool by which the NTSB forces legislative change. But highway safety laws are largely left up to the states, which have beenincreasingly resistant to many federal recommendations, and the transportationagencys appeal comes at a time when motorcycle deaths have actually been onthe decrease since 2009.This is not the rst time there has been federal pressure exerted on states to passhelmet laws. In the late 1960s, Congress threatened to withhold highway fundingfor states failing to adopt universal helmet laws, and within a few years almostevery state had a helmet mandate. But by the late 1970s, political resistance and pressure from motorcycle groupsconvinced Congress to break the link between motorcycle laws and federal

highway funds, and over half the states repealed their helmet laws.In 1991, Congress decided to try again, offering safety grants to states thatenforced helmet and seatbelt laws. States that didnt enforce such laws hadthree percent of their federal highway money redirected to their highway safetyprograms. Still, only two states re-instituted helmet l aws and by 1995 the federaleffort was again overturned and ve more states soon repealed their helmet laws.Today, only 20 states require all riders to wear helmets, and last year more statelegislatures considered laws to repeal helmet laws than to enact them.Forcing states to implement safety regulations is not territory the safetyboard wants to enter, according to Steve Blackistone, NTSBs state and localgovernment relations specialist, who said We are not prescriptive; we cannotmandate implementation. But on the same day as the NTSB proclamation, the insurance industry advocacygroup Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety called upon Congress to observethe NTSB recommendation and enact federal legislation that would result in allstates adopting all-rider helmet use laws.neW JerSey eStaBliSHeS StringentguidelineS For neW riderS

A measure sponsored by Senator Nicholas J. Sacco, chairman of the SenateTransportation Committee, which would establish safety guidelines for newmotorcycle riders in the Garden State was approved by the Assembly recentlyby a vote of 67-7.The bill, S-736, would enact several motorcycle safety regulations, includinga tiered licensing provision. Under the bill, if a person is issued a motorcyclelicense for a vehicle with a smaller-size engine -- less than 231 cubic centimeters-- they would be legally prohibited from operating a motorcycle with an enginedisplacement of more than 500 cc. Senator Sacco said that this provision would

ensure that new motorcycle riders are restricted from operating vehicles withengines that are too powerful for that drivers skill level.

Among other provisions, the bill would also require all applicants under the ageof 18 to complete a motorcycle safety program as a condition for licensure orendorsement. The bill was approved by the Senate by a vote of 31-3 on August 23, but mustbe returned to consider Assembly amendments which were largely technical innature. If approved in the Senate, it would head to the Governor to be signedinto law.
