President’s Message

October 2018 will be memorable for several reasons— record setting rain fall and

also the experience of another successful Butterfly Flutterby. The rain stopped, the sun

came out and warmed the botanical garden for us all to enjoy the release of the

butterflies. So many landed on watermelon sticks, it was fun to see how excited the

kids—and the adults—were.

Plans for this year's BFFB began in the Spring and continued through

October. Our thanks to our BFFB co-chairs, Cindy Miller and Harriet Perrello, for all

their time and efforts dedicated to this event. Gloria Land was busy all day along with her

volunteers at the BFFB booth. Terry Curcio, BFFB Art Contest Coordinator, was excited

to see the number of entries increased this year and the enthusiasm of the art teachers that

support this contest. GGC had a record number of volunteers this year also, from the craft

tables, to the nectar information table to the science booth. Thank you to all of our

members that made this event so

memorable to the local community.

We are preparing to participate in

the Veteran's Day Parade this weekend

and look forward to the Craft Bazaar at

our next general meeting. I am thankful

to all the club members that help and

volunteer to keep our club one of the best

in the District. I hope you all have a safe

and wonderful Thanksgiving.

21st Annual Butterfly Flutterby

Following a long parade of children dressed as butterflies (and numerous pets wearing

wings for the day!), an estimated 2500 people braved the clearing skies, mud and puddles

of water, and gathered at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens for the Butterfly Flutterby

festival on Saturday, October 20th.

As released monarchs fluttered through the gardens in search of nectar 66 GGC members

volunteered in various capacities at the festival and logged 752 volunteer hours!

Of special note is the assistance and support we received from Luke Wolfard, Gayle Hall,

other Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau staff, Grapevine Parks and Recreation

staff, and the National Weather Service---a big THANK YOU to all involved. Our GGC

volunteers, as always, gave freely and willingly of their time to make this year’s Butterfly

Flutterby a resounding success, and we are deeply grateful to you.

Join us next year at Butterfly Flutterby during the

monarch migration mania as we net some fun times

with friends!

Grapevine Garden Club Honorary Life Member

Marylou (Lou) Hope Milner ~ 1938 - 2018

Lou Milner was offered Honorary Life Membership in the Grapevine Garden Club in 2017 in recognition of her service to the club since 2001. Lou served on the Executive Committee as 3rd Vice President 2007-2009 and email communication chair from 2007-2016. While physically able Lou Milner participated in numerous events – volunteered at plant sales, served as general meeting hospitality hostess, hosted a May luncheon and executive committee meeting at her home, served on the spring luncheon committee for numerous years, participated in Gardens on View by allowing members to tour her garden

numerous times, provided cut flowers from her garden for events and luncheon displays, and served in many ways that can’t be documented but remain in our memories.

Participating in club events was something that Lou shared with her beloved husband, Wayne. We were accustomed to always seeing them together. Every visit to their garden was a delight as we viewed new garden structures built by Wayne and Lou’s latest plant additions. They were well known for sharing starts of plants with garden visitors. With his passing in 2012, Lou’s enthusiasm for hands-on home gardening projects diminished and her vision difficulties limited participation in club events but she continued to serve faithfully as email chair for many years.

Lou died peacefully in her bed on September 22 due to cardiovascular causes. In accordance to her wishes, no memorial service was held.

Twelve Years of Digging in the Dirt on West Texas Street

The project began with a vision of improving the front landscape of the Grapevine Housing Authority’s low-income rental units on West Texas Street (WTS) in 2006. The club decided to provide assistance to elderly or physically handicapped residents. However, it was determined that a unit’s resident will obviously change with time and to just landscape units with special needs residents wasn’t logical. Consequently, over a five-year period, all 19 units on West Texas Street were landscaped. Since the project’s conception, Suzi Guckel has encouraged members to continue to supplement the Grapevine Housing Authority’s maintenance of the

landscape with workdays scheduled at least three times a year to prune, weed, mulch and plant seasonal color.

The October GGC newsletter featured a photo of Suzi receiving a Certificate of Appreciation stat-ing the “Grapevine Housing Authority is grateful for your faithful service to residents of West Texas Street.” While Suzi still serves as the project coordinator, she is assisted by Laurie Evans, Sandy Guthrey, Bruce Herndon, Joe

Krimm, Lefty Mitchell, and Paula Wilbanks.

This project has several positive outcomes in addition to improving the at-tractiveness of Housing Authority units. Residents take pride in their flower beds and those who are physically able may work side-by-side with club members. Less able residents sit on their porches to talk and offer stories about their lives and their gardening experiences in years gone by. Every time GGC members are on site there is the thrill of seeing thriving plants and seasonal bloom, and we use this time to get to know each other better – socializing as we dig! There were 29 members working at WTS on October 30th before heading for refreshments at Jake’s. To amuse ourselves as well as residents, our work party included members wearing Halloween garb. If you missed the fun of working at WTS, plan on joining us on February 12th when Joe Krimm will offer tips as we focus on pruning roses. It is always fun to learn as we work together on this beautification project.
