Commanders Report Greetings Fellow Compatriots,
I’m pleased to report that we are again having our monthly meeting at Chill on July
20th. Our guest speaker will be Tommy Holmes. Tommy was a guest speaker last year and we
are grateful that he accepted our invitation. I cannot begin to tell everyone how difficult it is
finding guest speakers for our camp meetings. I want to thank Kyle and Alan for their assis-
tance. I discovered that the list of available speakers contained in our Division newsletter is way
out of date and needs revising. Last year I spoke with Craig about this issue and he and I agreed
that each camp member should be able to give a twenty-minute presentation about some phase
of the War for Southern Independence. To be honest, I was in the process of preparing a presen-
tation for Tuesday’s meeting due to a scheduling mix-up on my part. Tommy stepped up last
week and was able to rearrange is schedule for us. I’m going to request that each camp member
be ready and begin thinking about their presentation.
“But their memories shall remain for us, And their names, bright names. Without stain
for us The glory they won shall not wane for us, In legend and lay Our heroes in Gray Shall for-
ever live over again for us.”

State News - Denton Monument Update
The Confederate monument that spent more than a century outside the old Denton County Courthouse in the town square is being moved inside to the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. The plan to display the statue indoors, with the addition of historical context, was ap-proved unanimously Wednesday by The Texas Historical Commission in what has been referred to as a "model" for the state with regard to relocating Confederate monu-ments. The monument and statue were removed in June 2020 with the intention of preserving it for “educational and historical purposes” at another Denton County location – under the direction of the Texas Historical Commission. This week, that location was determined to be inside the very courthouse that it was erected outside of in 1918 provided it meet the following specifications.
Working with the executive committee on the location of the reinstalled memorial.
Description of the history of slavery in America and its causal impact on the Civil War.
Description of the African-American experience as that experience re-lated to the legacy of the Civil War at the time of the memorial's initial construction in 1918.
Asking the county to consent to the continuing jurisdiction of the THC for the administration of the permit.
The controversial monument is 18 feet, 54 inches tall, but the ceiling height for the Courthouse-on-the-Square is 12 feet, 8 inches. As a result, a permanent exhibit inside the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum will feature the statue of the soldier and two engraved tablets from the original monument.
The exhibit will be surrounded on three sides by a 3-D version of the Confederate monument
where it was previously located on the Courthouse-on-Square lawn.
Additionally, a story will explain the history of the monument as well as the history of slavery
statewide and locally. Kiosks will also be available at the exhibit with videos of narrators from
the committee speaking on everything from the removal of the monument, history of slavery in
America, the Jim Crow era, history of the United Daughters of The Confederacy, and Confeder-
ate monuments.

IN THE STATE WHERE TIM ALLEN VOICES THE TOURISM COMMERCIALS A statue of a confederate soldier in Ottawa County is staying put following a Monday night vote by the
Township Board. The motion to keep the statue passed in a 5 to 2 vote. It will also be repaired from any
damage done to it over the past year. The board’s decision goes against the recommendation of the citizen
committee which was to remove and replace the statue. Township Clerk Jody Hansen says, after input from
the community, a majority of residents wants the statue to remain.
IN THE OLD LINE STATE Thanks in part to our efforts the Talbot County Council rejected an NAACP proposal to remove the
County's Confederate monument in a 3-2 vote last August. With much continued effort that vote has held.
But the NAACP sued the county back in May in an attempt to have the statue removed by court order.
Now, with that process moving slowly and Juneteenth approaching, the Move the Monument Coalition and
the Talbot County NAACP are ramping up efforts to remove the Confederate statue. Joining them is U.S.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. He and NAACP president Richard Potter held a town hall meeting
calling for the statue's removal. A rally in Talbot County supporting the removal was on Saturday.
IN THE LONE STAR STATE Months after the Gainesville City Council agreed to purchase the Confederate monument on display at
Leonard Park it was taken down. The removal project cost $12,108, all funded through the city’s hotel oc-
cupancy tax. A “unity statue” (a Texas star held up by several different hands and engraved with quotes by
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Helen Keller) will take it’s place.
IN THE GEM STATE Boise First United Methodist Church is removing a stained-glass window featuring Confederate General
Robert E. Lee with U.S. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
IN THE GOLDEN STATE A Confederate Flag was seized from a student of Arrowhead's Big Bear High School on the last day of
school this week after he was seen strolling campus with two other students, one with a Trump 2020 flag
and the other with a Blue Lives Matter flag. None of the students were identified.
Bear Valley Unified School District Superintendent Mary M. Suzuki said the other students’ flags were not
confiscated because they have First Amendment protections. When ask why the Confederate Flag wasn't
afforded the same consideration Suzuki responded, "the courts do not assure such protections for the Con-
federate flag. It is considered a symbol of hate at this point. We take it seriously.” Suzuki said. An investi-
gation into the incident is underway.
IN THE BLUEGRASS STATE Circuit Judge Lisa Payne Jones granted a request by the Kentucky Division of the United Daughters of the
Confederacy and ordered the Confederate monument not be moved from the Daviess County Courthouse
for now. Jones granted a request by the Kentucky Division of the the ownership of the 121-year-old statue
is in dispute between Fiscal Court and the Kentucky UDC. Fiscal Court would like to move the statue off
the courthouse lawn, and county Judge-Executive Al Mattingly previously said he was in discussions with
an undisclosed party about taking it. The UDC claims they have owned the statue since 1970 when the
John C. Breckenridge Chapter 306 UDC dissolved. The UDC argues the county merely gave permission
for the statue to be placed on the courthouse lawn in 1900. Fiscal Court claims the county maintains and
insures the statue. County officials say the statue became county property after the Daviess County Confed-
erate Association fulfilled its agreement to place the statue at the courthouse in 1900.In her ruling, Jones
said the UDC had shown it could suffer "irreparable injury" if the statue were to be moved. "Whether
through accident or malice, the Court believes that moving the extremely heavy, extremely old and ex-
tremely controversial monument to another location pending a resolution of this case is fraught with the
possibility of harm," Jones wrote.

A few days ago, we sent out an email asking for help with replacing the

flags to have on hand. WOW!!!!
He asked me to send his deepest appreciation to all who
stepped up to help.

Many thanks to the men of the13th Mechanized, who help maintain
this site in partnership with the Va Flaggers. We are thrilled to have
established partnerships with numerous heritage organizations across
the Commonwealth, who join us to work together to maintain the 30+

construct more, without their assistance.

CHARGE TO THE SONS
OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS
“To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the
cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Con-
federate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his
virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love
also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish.”
Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee Commander-General United Confederate Veterans New Orleans, Louisiana 1906
Remember, it is our duty to see that the true history of the South is preserved and
presented to future generations.
Until we meet again, let us remember our obligations to our forefathers, who gave us the
undeniable birthright of our Southern Heritage and the vision, desire and courage to see
it perpetuated.
