Millions of kids go to summer camps each year. It is an American summer tradition that has been around for generations. Sending your child to summer camps is so much more than just getting your kids involved and out of the house! It helps them build character and molds them into a strong individual ready to take on the world.

Here are some reasons why you should consider sending your child to a summer camp:

Positive Role Models Camp counselors have an immense impact on your child, because they are listened to as an established peer, not a parent laying down rules. They have a vested interest in the program and are looking to give new generations the same experience that had such a profound effect on them.

New Friends Attending a summer camp will expose your child to children from different schools, communities and cultures. Being able to cultivate new friendships and to work as a cohesive unit is essential to every day life, now and in adulthood.

New Experiences By sending them to a summer camp, you are giving them the opportunity to embark on an exciting journey filled with new adventures and friendships. It is the experience that creates the life-long memories, which make summer camps special.

Embrace Creativity Camps get children to utilize their imagination and interact with one another to develop creative solutions for challenges, talent shows, contests and crafts. Your children will develop creative thinking skills giving them the ability to look at situations from a variety of different viewpoints.

Foster Independence Camps encourage children to take risks and help foster independence and responsibility. They will be able to try things out of their comfort zone, become more adaptable to change and learn the importance of organization and time management. Being away from home can be scary, but being around friends and peers their own age will make the experience a smooth one.

SAT/ACT Math Prep

• Take your children to a hands-on museum or historical landmark. This process helps stimulate their thinking, promotes learning of new concepts and recall of those previously learned. Try to make it into a game by developing some sort of “I Spy” game or treasure hunt before hand to take on the adventure. It will help them to pay closer attention.

• Conduct simple science experiments with your children. You can even use the scientific method throughout the process. These experiments will teach them to follow directions, make observations and ask questions, while providing hours of hand-on fun learning.

• Create a summer-long reading competition within your family. Establish prizes that will be awarded at the duration of the summer and create a progress chart. Take your children to the library or a book

exchange store once a week to get books. To avoid being deceived, have the child write up a paragraph summarizing the book. This friendly competition will help improve their reading skills, writing skills and expand their vocabulary.

• Encourage service learning. This can include taking the family to volunteer at a local soup kitchen or participating in yard work and household chores. Helping others will teach them respect, time-management and the importance of teamwork.

• Send your children to an overnight or day camp. All of these camps have an emphasis on learning while having fun. They are also a great way for your child to gain independence and make new friends.

During the summer children can fall behind academically. They get so excited about enjoying their break from school, that they often forget everything they’ve learned come August. You can encourage your child to continue and practice their education during the summer by combining fun activities with learning. Consider using these ideas to transform their summer vacation into a learning paradise:

Having a sleepover is a big event for your child. Although slumber parties are fun for kids, the very words “slumber party” themselves strike fear into any parent’s heart. Having a solid plan in place can make this up-all-night party for kids a dreamland for parents.

Here are some tips.• The kids should be at least eight years old since kids younger than

eight require more supervision.• Have an even number of children with no more than six children

total. An even number helps to keep anyone from feeling left out.• Keeping the kids entertained is a top priority. Try to have a general

plan established that can include movies, a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, board games, baking, etc.

• Munching seems to be the favorite past time at a slumber party. For a quick and fairly cheap dinner, you may want to consider ordering pizza. For late night snacks, consider crackers, chips and dip, vegetable trays and ice cream.

Cruising in the Caribbean, hiking in the Rockies, exploring Disney’s Magic Kingdom, touring Europe, dining in the real Outback, or just hitting the open road to get away from it all – whatever your dream vacation might be, Lakeside’s Vacation Plus account can help you get there.

Just tell us where you want to go, how much you want to spend and when you plan on traveling. Are you looking to beat the sweltering summer heat and have some fun outdoors? Whether you’re playing in a pool, on vacation or entertaining a group of kids, these exciting water games are sure to leave you feeling refreshed.

Pass-the-Ball ReplayDivide participants up into two teams and form a line. At the shout of “go,” the player at the front of each line passes a ball over their head to the player directly behind them. This player then passes the ball between their legs to the person behind them. This pattern continues until it reaches the last player, who then swims with the ball to the front of the line and repeats the process until the first player returns to their original spot. The first team to re-turn to their original line order wins.

Hide the BalloonsPlace about a dozen inflated balloons in the shallow end of a pool. Players will compete to see who can acquire and hold the most bal-loons under their bodies in 30 seconds time.

Bottle Brigade RaceParticipants will race across the pool while pushing empty plastic bottles with their feet.

Piranha BallContestants hold hands and form a circle with a bouncy ball floating in the middle, aka the piranha. The goal is to avoid getting bit by the piranha. When the ball bumps a player, they are out. Players can try to pull one another toward the ball or blow the ball in their direction. Going under water to avoid the piranha or push it out of the circle is grounds for disqualification though.

Crocodile CrossingAll players huddle together, minus one. Each player decides what type of fish they are, and then line up along a wall of the pool. The remaining player is the crocodile and stands in the middle of the pool with their back to the others and begins to call out types of fish. When a player hears their fish called, they must swim to the other side of the pool. The crocodile, without turning around to look, must try to catch them before they reach the safety of the other side. If the person is caught, they become the next crocodile.

Fun water games to beat the summer heat.

These cute cookie kicks are sure to make a splash at your next pool party.

Ingredients• Oval-shaped cookies (Nabisco Cameos

and Pepperidge Farm Milanos)• Frosting• Sour gummy worms• Rope licorice• Gummy candy

Instructions1. To make a pair, frost two oval-shaped

cookies or use a toothpick to dab frosting on each cookie where the straps will be attached.

2. For wide straps, snip the rounded ends from a sour gummy worm, cut it in half, and slice each half lengthwise, leaving one end intact. For thin straps, cut rope licorice into four 1-3/4 pieces, cut one end of each piece on an angle, and pinch together the pointed ends to form two pairs.

3. Press the straps, connected ends first, into the frosting. Use more frosting to add gummy candy jewels. Let the cookies set for 20 minutes. Serve them on a dish towel spread on a beach of graham cracker crumbs.

With a steady hand and some colorful drinks, you can create a tasty, multilayered concoction. The secret is in selecting liquids with varying amounts of sugar, since those that contain more (such as soda) are denser than those with less (such as diet drinks). And that makes it possible to actually stack one on top of another (for a little while, anyway—then they’ll start to blend). Here’s how to serve up a thirst quencher with two, three, or even more layers.

Ingredients• Ice cubes• Cranberry juice• Wild Berry flavor Gatorade Fierce• Diet 7-Up

Instructions1. Fill a clear glass with ice cubes. Pour the

drink with the most sugar (check the nutrition label) into the glass. For our red, white, and blue recipe, start with the cranberry juice.

2. Very slowly add a beverage that contains less sugar—in this case, Wild Berry flavor Gatorade Fierce. Be careful to pour it onto an ice cube—not directly into the other drink—to keep them from mixing.

3. Use the same technique to add a layer of Diet 7-Up.

Hungry kids will dig right into this tasty lunchtime fare, perfect for beach parties, picnics, and more. (Serves 2)

Ingredients• 1 croissant• Sandwich filling*• 6 baby carrots• 2 toothpicks• 1 black olive• 2 cream cheese balls (1/2-inch)• 1 red bell pepper• 1 radish

Instructions1. Slit open the outside edge of a

croissant, as shown, and stuff it with sandwich filling.*

2. Tuck six baby carrots into the sides to form legs.

3. Slide two 1/2-inch balls of cream cheese onto toothpicks, top each with a black olive slice, and stick them in place as shown.

4. Snip off the tips of the croissant and slide a red bell pepper claw into each end.

5. Finish the crab by attaching a rad-ish slice smile with a dab of cream cheese.

Tips:Chicken or tuna salad, ham and cheese and PB&J also make delicious fillers.

During the afternoon or evening, it is a good idea for you to call home and check in on the babysitter and how things are going. This could help alleviate a potential problem. When you return home, you should debrief the babysitter and ask if there were any specific areas where the sitter may have had trouble. Once the sitter has left, ask your children how their experience with the babysitter went, if anything made them feel uncomfortable and if they would like that specific babysitter to babysit again.

About Sitters

Entrusting someone to care for your children can be challenging. You want to find a qualified babysitter to ensure that your child is left in capable hands. You want someone who is mature and friendly, has common sense and a genuine fondness for children.

The best place to start looking is within your community—your church, local schools, your workplace, etc. These people are people you all ready know and trust, and are likely your best bet for finding a reliable and capable sitter. When you have some names, it is important to check with their references, these can be teachers or other families the potential babysitter has sat for before. Keep in mind the applicant’s age and certifications, such as CPR and first aid. You want someone who is mature and capable of acting logically and rationally in the case of an emergency.

Once you have selected a sitter, invite them over for a trial run before actually leaving them at home with your children alone. This will give you a chance to see how they interact with your children and for you to give a house tour, thoroughly explain the house rules, give out contact information and to specify your general expectations. These should include any information about allergies, daily routines and disciplinary actions for example. Additionally, this is a great time for you, as the parent, to make sure the children understand that when the babysitter is there they are in charge.
