TRANSCRIPT

Three Colours Blue- Rayaan Haji MuhumedThree Colours Blue is a 1993 French film written and produced by the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski. The film genre is a mystery drama which starts off with a tragic event through the opening sequence. The tragic effect of a mother losing her child and husband to a car crash. One which she survived from. Throughout the beginning shots the director uses certain shots and scenes to create suspense. The suspense of what is going to happen builds up the audiences emotions to bring an overwhelming effect once the car crash occurs. However in the beginning we get to know the little girl Anna as we are able to see her point a view through several of shots. The medium shots and close ups were very effective during the opening sequence because it added onto the mystery of future events. Krzysztof chose to begin the film with this unusual beginning to keep the audience on edge. Conveying the idea of death can happen at any time; he used a car crash to signify the shock the mother experienced once she realised it was real and not a dream. The crash still being a dream to her shows the audience that she is not able to overcome the tragedy- loss of her loved ones. In the opening sequence we able to establish four characters. The little girl Anna- shown in several scenes. The father through him stretching from the car journey. We are not shown his face. The boy who witnesses the crash and the mother who survives the crash.

This is a medium close up. We are able to see the little girl resting on her shoulders on the back of her car. This shot shows the girls facial expression and body language. We able to tell that she is tired from the long car journey.

This close up is the most effective shot throughout the beginning. The mise en scene of the blurred car tyre and focus on the brake line gives it a gripping edge. The dripping sound alerts the audience of something unusual. The loose brake foretells the tragic event which is about to occur.

The camera shot in this scene is a medium close up. This based on the focus on the boys face. We are able to see his attention is not towards the camera but to something he can see from a distance. In this scene he is on the side of a road and has seen a car.

The camera shot of this scene was a medium shot. The focus was in the crash and brought in glimpses of surrounding. The mise en scene brings out the surroundings of the crash. It is a deserted area, full of mist and is surrounded by trees. It shows us the car is smashed into a tree with a beach ball out open.

In this scene it uses an extreme long shot. This shows the mise en scene. Indicates the distance the boy was away from the crash. We see the boy to be a small person as he is running towards the car.

The camera shot used is a medium close- up. This is to show the mothers facial expression. We are to see the pain and confusion on the mothers face. Upon realising the events of the crash. We know she is the mother as she confirms her daughter and husband to the doctor.
